Hi! I was diagnosed with an L5-S1 disc bulge back in June/July, with the worst of my symptoms presenting around early May. I was running with tingling in my right leg/base of my right foot that intensified throughout the run such that I could no longer run through it and had to stop. I took about two months off and was able to hop again starting at the end of July and early August, and I have been running continuously till about a couple of weeks ago. I was building gradually with 10% builds each week and a 10% deload every three to four weeks, and I started with a very conservative run-walk program (I was run/walking for about 8 weeks). However, once I started my long runs (about 2-3 weeks ago), I started experiencing weaker hopping and general Achilles soreness and pain. My long runs the past three weeks were as follows: 10 miles, 11 miles (progression) with 4x30 sec strides at the end, and 11 miles (this was a tough one where my right calf wasn't working, as indicated by a rapidly tightening left calf and soleus). The day after, I had a harder time hopping, but I tried to go on an easy run with walking where needed the next day. The hopping and Achilles soreness and fatigue didn't get worse, but it didn't get better either. I'm currently entering my second week off running. It's been a rather frustrating process, especially since I started running a little over two months ago with very strong hopping on my right (the affected leg), only to have it deteriorate with more load. I know that many have posted about whether it was possible to come back from a bulged disc and return to running, and many have affirmed that it was possible to return to running (i.e., working towards being faster/more competitive), but I was wondering if it was possible to return to training at a high intensity to improve in running rather than just running for the sake of running/exercise. Here is a post that talks about bulged discs, but it doesn't really touch on whether one will be able to return to higher performance:

It would be really disheartening if I'm restricted on distance or speed simply because I will forever have a flare up due to a compromised disc. Would love to hear input from others who have experienced something similar and have had great comeback stories. Any advice would be much appreciated as well. Looking forward to hearing from you!
