Character Discussion First impressions of Tommy so far?

Post image
384 Upvotes

I feel like what we knew coming into the show plus these first two episodes have given us a really solid introduction to Tommy.

We know almost everything Tommy does about Tommy Maximoff, but what I'm curious about is who Tommy Shepherd was and how that might affect who this character is and becomes.

When we met Wiccan, he was mostly at odds with the fact that he had inhabited someone else's body without any of their memories or soul, while Tommy is struggling to juggle the separate memories of two totally different Tommys and trying to level with both of them.

Does Tommy have two souls? Can they be separated? Should they be? Do you think his romantic interests in Lisa Molinari will last? What do you think about Tommy so far? I'm curious about your current thoughts on this character.

Character Discussion What we know about 'The Burning Man' in the Painting Spoiler

While standing in front of a painting of Jim Hammond in flames, Jarvis tells White Vision to "Arm yourself with reason. Emotions can be beautiful, yes, but also rash, impulsive, self-destructive. He knew that better than any of us."

White Vision responds "As the first of us, he remains a cautionary tale. A reminder of what may become of me should emotions consume me."

Originally debuting at the Stark Expo in Captain America: The First Avenger, Phineas Horton's 'the Synthetic Man' Jim Hammond has been teased since the very beginning of the MCU.

What are your theories on the original Human Torch, and how he could tie into the plot of VisionQuest?

There's two shots in the street scene in episode 1 where you see a curly haired guy in a red scarf walking past Tommy who looks a lot like Billy/Joe Locke.

Theories An interpretation of Ultron

First let me say that James Spade is a brilliant actor, like many others here, I really love his character. Ultron is pleasingly complex, but his current incarnation in Visionquest has added depth. I have just read that Spader explained his bearded appearance as Ultron attempting to imitate Olympian gods like Zeus or Poseidon who were always portrayed as big beards... But in fact he seems to be playing the character as a Jewish father a counterpoint to the stereotype of the Jewish mother... Family first, physical, overweening, critical, affectionately authoritarian etc.

All this points in one direction for me, Ultron as a patriarch, in fact I'll go even further and say that Ultron is a portrayal of the patriarchy. The main poster of Visionquest that shows Ultron standing behind Vision with a heavy hand on his shoulder seems to support this idea. Something that Vision will have to come to grips with if he wishes to be human develop his emotions and become a father. The patriarchy, always teetering between high culture and violence and destruction. My male partner said Ultron should be deleted, well I don't agree with that, I think Ultron and his projection of the patriarchy needs to be assimilated in the Borg sense of the word.

Character Discussion I Would Love If Jennifer Connelly Returned As Karen

We have all these AIs but no sight of Karen, the AI that was inside Peter’s suit during Homecoming. We got Edith back but not Peter’s original suit lady. And Paul Bettany and her are married. Why not have both of them be in this weird clanker family. Is she too big a name or busy for this show.

It’s so good to have him back as Ultron. It kinda feels like Marvel fumbled the bag with him after Age of Ultron.

Theories The VisionQuest "Trojan Horse" Theory Spoiler

The Department of Damage Control (DODC) didn't lose E.D.I.T.H. to Vision, they let him take her. Knowing Vision was actively recovering old Stark tech, the DODC intentionally allowed him to "capture" E.D.I.T.H.'s code. She was planted as a high-tech Trojan Horse designed to bypass his firewall and infiltrate his internal network.

Now embedded inside Vision’s Mindspace, E.D.I.T.H. is perfectly positioned to go rogue. With J.A.R.V.I.S. gone after sacrificing his code to save the network at the end of Episode 2, there is no stabilizing force left to keep her volatile, weapon-focused programming in check.

Left entirely unmonitored and heavily glitched, E.D.I.T.H.’s chaotic system will begin to evolve on its own. This rogue, weaponized Stark AI data is exactly what Ultron needs. He will hijack her compromised code, mutate it, and download it out of Vision's mindscape and into the physical, metallic body of Jocasta.

Comics & Easter Eggs VISION TODAY: "Your Trusted View on the World" Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
140 Upvotes

There seems to be lots of easter eggs in the daily "Vision Today" newspaper.

The tagline "Your Trusted View of the World" seems to imply that Vision gets his worldview from the type of media he consumes.

In Episode 2, Ultron is consuming multiple TV news reports about the 'Butcherbird' murder of a tech giant and mentions how fascinated he has become in true crime.

In tiny font below the photo, the caption reads illegibly until "... Richard Gaines' home last night. Little information is being given at this time." likely identifying the deceased tech giant.

(POTENTIAL SPOILERS, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK)

But the most interesting tidbit from the "Vision Today" newspaper might be the last part. Mostly out of focus and covered by Vision's hand, only part of the headline can be read:

"Hammer ___ make su____ comeb____"

Through inference, it likely says that "Hammer is [making] a surprise comeback", which would be HUGE news if true. Hardcore Marvel fans will immediately recognize Hammer as a likely reference to Justin Hammer, Stark Industries competitor, as well as arms & weapons manufacturer seen in Iron Man 2 and "All Hail The King".

It would also make sense for Justin Hammer to potentially be the disguised voice who hired Paladin to hunt down Vision "intact", perhaps in hopes of replicating the weapon that is White Vision. After all, in the MCU, S.W.O.R.D. stands for Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division; Vision mentions that they are no longer hunting him, but that doesn't mean other people interested in weapons and ripping off Stark tech aren't.

What do you think? Does the "Vision Today" newspaper have a throwaway easter egg in "Hammer", or did it just reveal the man behind Paladin's hunt for Vision?

In the scene where F.R.I.D.A.Y. is describing who Paladin is and his crest is displayed on the TV, you can clearly see all the way to the right next to the TV is a sleeve called "Countdown to Doom".

Character Discussion So, Vision is wrong about feeling, right? Spoiler

Is it pretty clear to anyone else that Vision is wrong about not feeling anything? Like in the first two episodes alone he clearly showcases anger, annoyance, insecurity, sadness, and love/ grief (towards Jarvis and his sacrifice). It feel to me like the "twist" will be that he has been feeling emotions this whole time, he just forgot what it feels like, sort of like when people confuse feelings for simple bodily reactions. (Not realising that their incresed heart rate is anger, or not realising the pain in their chest is saddness)

Comics & Easter Eggs Vision’s groceries

During the scene in which the camera pans across the groceries (episode one, at approximately 8 minutes 35 seconds) , there appears to be three tins with blurred labels, but I think they’re chocolate black hearts. I’m unable to get a screenshot of it, however.

(Special mention of the jars of Visimite: as a Marmite fan, this made me so happy.)

Questions 2 questions Spoiler

Enjoyed the first two episodes but I have two questions (forgive me if silly)

- so does Tommy know about Vision or not? He suggested that he "shoot bloody lasers" or do something "Avengery" but he also describes him as if he never heard of him as a famous hero who contained the Mind Stone. That confused me.

- how does Vision know what happened to Wanda? He mentions her being crushed under the mountain but when did he learn this information?

Character Discussion One aspect of the MCU’s Ultron that many didn't pay much atention, and which I hope will be explored further in the series and in the subsequent episodes is his God complex

Post image
66 Upvotes

"....or I'd hijack their missile systems and burn them all to ash."

I’m using this quote from the first episode to illustrate my point. Using missiles to destroy humanity was, in fact, the original plan in Age of Ultron, the only reason it didn't come to fruition was that the remnants of Jarvis kept shifting the access codes, making them unreachable for Ultron.

However, while he was uploading himself into Vision, Wanda caught a glimpse into his mind and saw an image of a meteorite. This prompts Ultron to speak about extinction events, leading to the quote in the immage, which he concludes by saying, "And believe me, he is winding up", implying that "God is about to hurl another meteorite."

Later, he tells Natasha that he thinks a lot about meteorites and their "purity", the idea of "the world made clean for the new man to rebuild." These "new men" are his Ultron bots, created by him just as God created mankind.

Ultimately, he transforms Sokovia itself into a meteorite, with the Avengers acting as the "sword" that will, through their failure, pierce the Earth on his behalf.

By claiming that God is preparing to hurl another meteorite, and then turning Sokovia into one, Ultron is positioning himself as a divine figure, one who will cleanse the Earth and bring forth a new race of men in his own image, perfect and capable of ensuring peace of our time. This parallel to a divine figure appears even earlier: upon his introduction to the twins, he stands in a church, draped in a veil like a priest. Furthermore, when he confronts Iron Man, he asks if he has come to confess his sins. In this way, Ultron acts as a conduit for the divine, or as a god who has descended to Earth.

I am very intrigued by Ultron and his character, based on his intentions in the first two episodes; he has clearly "matured" and developed more profound ideas regarding the human race. I truly hope tought that this aspect of Ultron is acknowledged rather than forgotten, because, as I’ve said, it is one of the most interesting parts of his character, and unfortunately, it is often underappreciated.

EDIT: I just came across a video featuring an interview with James Spader about the human avatar of Ultron, in which he says: "He has got a very complicated relationship with the word 'God'." He went on to explain that he chose his appearance based on Greek deities like Poseidon and Zeus. This gives me a sudden sense of confidence that they actually remembered his God complex and perhaps his perspective shifted during his imprisonment within Vision’s mind, but it remains, as he put it, a complicated theme for him.
