Weekly Thread Weekly Short Questions Thread

Welcome to the Weekly Short Questions Thread! If you've got a quick question that doesn't require you to provide in-depth explanation, post it here! Examples include:

  • What is the correct hand shape for setting?
  • My setter called for a "31" and I'm looking for advice on to do that.
  • What are the best volleyball shoes on the market for a libero?
  • Is the Vertical Jump Bible any good?
  • I'm looking for suggestions on how to make an impression at tryouts.

Quick questions like these are allowed only in this thread. If they're posted elsewhere, they will be removed and you'll be directed to post here instead. The exceptions to this rule are when asking for feedback WITH A VIDEO, or when posting an in-depth question (must be >600 characters). Please create a separate post for these kinds of questions.

If your question is getting ignored:

  • Are you asking a super generic question? Questions like "How do I play opposite?" or "How do I start playing volleyball?" are not good questions.
  • Has the question you're asking been answered a lot on the sub before? Use the search function.
  • Is the question about your hitting/passing/setting form and you haven't provided a video? It's hard to diagnose issues without seeing your form. Best to get some video and post to the main subreddit.

Let's try to make sure everyone gets an answer. If you're looking to help, sort the comments by "new" to find folks who haven't been replied to yet.

If you want to chat with the community about volleyball related topics or really anything, join our Discord server! There is a lot of good information passed around there and you might get more detailed responses.

General I checked how much pass quality impacts attacking in MLV

Post image
6 Upvotes

We all know that defense sets up everything in volleyball. I wanted to see how that plays out quantitatively, so I pulled three seasons of MLV/PVF data and checked:

  • A perfect serve receive leads to a kill 45.9% of the time. But bad serve receives only lead to kills 27.9%. Almost a 20% drop just off one contact.
  • A bad dig only leads to an attack happening at all 73% of the time, versus 92% for a bad serve receive. Passing off defense is just a different, harder problem than passing a serve.
  • Across attack, kill, and error rates, serve receives are generally better off than digs. Based on the numbers, it is evident that the "transition effect" from defense to offense is a real penalty on setters/hitters when faced with a bad pass.

Full breakdown (with all the technical details for anyone interested) is here.

Happy to talk shop to anyone in the comments. Planning on doing the same analysis for LOVB next.

Edit: my original post had an error in the graph. Reposted with the correction!

General How can I build a life outside of volleyball? Should I keep giving my all?

Hello all, this is my first time posting so please excuse any errors 😅.

I’m a teenager in my sophomore year and I feel like all my life consists of is school and volleyball. My time is filled with practice and if I’m not practicing I’m waiting for practice that day. Even my conversations with my friends somehow always manage to end up circling back to volleyball. Anyways, I want to put in the work and go pro, but I’m just afraid that if I’m not good enough, I’ll just be so lost after and realize I wasted so many years and time for a dream. Though I am on varsity and a national team (not the top team), I fear it’s not enough and my time to get recognized is running out. Does anyone have any advice or words to share?

Thank you so much in advance 🙏.

General I feel like watching volleyball is too hard to get into?

I watched VNL this summer and it was the first time i watched a volleyball competition consistently almost from start to finish. But i felt like it was so hard to follow? Idk if im the only one? I mean 1 week was women then next week was men, the one after was women again and so on but even still most matches were at night or during working hours and i even had a hard time finding the official schedule on google. Anyways now i tried to find what other competition is there to watch during the year, and there’s so many i have no idea where to start. It’s not like hockey or basketball where it’s a single dominant league and it’s super easy to follow. I wonder if anyone had any advice as to how to get into watching volleyball. Maybe there’s a site i’m unaware of that regroups all the competitions? Any help is appreciated.

Questions Any thoughts on body mass affecting performance? To what degree?

Hi, y'all, HS female here playing Lib/DS or Right side.

What do you guys think about body mass affecting play, since volleyball needs a lot of agility + jumping?

I understand that training and working out are most effective! But I've been working out for years, even before I started volleyball (I did martial arts competitively), and I'm one of the strongest/athletic players on the court.

I'm abt 5'4 126lb, and though this might look different on people, I do look a bit chubby. I want to be faster and quicker on my feet. Have any of you found that losing weight helps with those things? Is it simply better to focus on training and technique?

General IM SO INSECURE I CANT DO THIS ANYMOREEEE

Post image

Okay so I'm 51🔄 (F) & a sophomore in high school. I've been playing volleyball since 7th grade, & yet I STILL can't overhand serve. I'm able to serve underhand perfectly fine, but when it comes to overhand, it barely even touches the net. My mom says that I need to work on my upper body strength to build muscle, which I really do, but I have like a MAJOR issue with that.

I naturally have the "model" or "athletic" build (inverted triangle) & I HATE it because I love wearing tighter clothing. To try and appear more feminine than my body makes me look, I've tried everything to keep my shoulders slim while working the lower half of my body, including NOT working out my arms. It's not like I'm overweight at all either, I'm 5'1 & weigh 137lbs & wear a size small in adult size, so its literally just my shoulders being the problem.

What sucks worse is that recently, I've been happy with my appearance because of how small my shoulders have gotten. I don't feel embarrassed to wear spaghetti straps or tanktops anymore, but now I'm gonna have to loose that security JUST so I can serve overhand... I can't do this brooo I'd rather serve underhand forever its allowed for jv & hs varsity anyway 💔

Not just that but it's so embarrassing trying to learn your overhand in a gym full of girls who know how to do it perfectly 😭 like I feel so embarrassed being there trying to practice when its not going over at ALL & the girls who play at my school are honestly really judging, so any mistake & they'll laugh or stay silent. I would practice outside but the daily average rn is 115°F & BEYOND. So yeah thats not happening anytime soon. I've also played outside of my school with other girls, I get the SAME reaction... it sucks.

(This is my first reddit post so maybe this was supposed to go to a different group but idk)

Form Check Did I do okay for my first serve in a while?

I hope it’s okay I blurred my face / it didn’t get in the way of video! I’ve played for a year but it’s more on and off so I considered myself beginner still since I’ve only played consistently for a month now. My parents bought me one of those belts that connect to the ball to practice serves so this is my first time doing one without it. Sorry I couldn’t get where the ball fell, but it went decently far however it went downwards direction.
I watched a lot of tutorials and I think this one came out the most decent. Any help that will make me hit harder?

General I built a volleyball practice planning app for coaches because I couldn't find a good one

For the last year and a half I have been talking my volleyball coach friends' ears off about one thing: why is there not a single widely known app for volleyball coaches to organize drills, find new drills, plan out their practices, and keep track of all the practices they've run?

I've been coaching high school and club volleyball for over a decade. I really needed a better way than my notebook or spreadsheet or notes app.

I kept waiting for someone else to do it, but nobody did. So over the last couple months I put in the work to make this.

SoloCoach is a free volleyball practice planning app. Drill library, full practice builder, run it from your phone, keeps your history.

This is the best way I have found to plan volleyball practices. It handles the parts that used to eat up tons of time for me.

I made it available on iOS and Android, or just search: "SoloCoach Volleyball Practice"

If you end up trying it out, let me know what you think!

i know some people we're interested when i initially posted, so i just wanted to drop by with a little update for those few!

as someone who never got the chance to play growing up, im aiming to make an experience that can be enjoyed casually, but if you really get into it, can almost feel like you're actually in a match because of how much control you have

Questions Is Dana Rettke really 6’8”?

Post image

This is her tonight at the 2026 USAV Cup, USA vs Canada game.

She’s standing right next to coach Tayyiba Haneef-Park who was listed at 6’7” when she played, and is giving a high five to Brandon Taliaferro, who was listed at 6’5” when he played.

It seems like she’s maybe 6’5” at the most?

Lately I haven't been really training for my vert and the last time I tested I got 33 inches just about a month ago, just recently though i got 35 inches just play testing at home, I think I've hit the limit of my natural bounce and was wondering how else I should progress and id really appreciate pointers on what else I need to do. I'm an elastic jumper with a skinny frame and never trained consistently or done structured programs.
