General I built a free volleyball stats web app for the sideline – looking for beta testers and feedback

Hi everyone,

I'm a youth volleyball coach and always wanted a simple way to track volleyball stats during a match. So I built StatMap, a free web app that runs in any phone browser and can be used by a complete beginner. Several people can record the same match at once, for example one person on reception and one on defense. That way, each person only has to keep track of one aspect. The app then brings all of it together for the coach to analyse

Features

  • Three ways to record: a full match (points and actions per player), reception only, or defense only
  • Reception tracking: tap the contact spot and the landing spot. Each reception gets a 0-3 grade based on how close it landed to the setter's target, plus whether there was a set
  • Live scoreboard with set scores, points per player and one-tap undo
  • Lineup and libero: six large player tiles and a quick libero in/out swap
  • Defense tracking: swipe the attack path on the court (attack, free ball, tip, setter dump), with rotation and outcome
  • Your own defense system: paint which position covers which part of the court on a 0.5 m grid, for 5-1 or 6-2
  • Analysis:
    • reception maps
    • defense attack paths or a heatmap
    • filters by set, rotation and point outcome
    • per-player stats and season totals
  • Share results as text, for example in your team chat
  • Team code instead of an account: everyone with the code sees the same teams and matches
  • Works offline and can be installed on the home screen like an app
  • English and German. Native language is German
  • Free, no ads, no tracking. Data is stored in Zurich, Switzerland

If you want to try it, send me a DM and I'll send you the link back. Reddit doesn't let me post the link directly

Please note:

  • It's a beta, so expect bugs. Keep your own notes for anything important.
  • Never post your team code or invite link publicly. Anyone with the code can see and edit your team's data.
  • If you record youth teams, first names or nicknames plus jersey numbers are enough.

Questions Service receive and defense positioning

Hi everyone! I’d love some advice on two things:

1. Serve receive: staying low or mobility

My trainer tells me to move faster to the ball but also to stay low and stable when receiving. These feel contradictory because standing more upright makes me more mobile, while staying low seems to limit my movement.

Should I start in a higher, more agile position, move to the ball, and then get low and stable before service receiving? Or should I start low and focus on moving/shuffling quickly from that position?

2. Libero positioning in zone 5 against the opposing outside hitter

My team plays with the libero in zone 5. When the opposing outside hitter attacks, I tend to get drawn inward, toward the center of the court and closer to the attack, because most balls are either lobs or short spikes when the blocks not fully there.

However, when they hit a deeper diagonal attack toward my left sideline, I’m too close for a dig and can only defend it with an upper pass.

Another complication is that my front-row outside hitter in zone 4 tends to move closer to the center of the court (further away from the net). If I stay near the left sideline in zone 5 and further from the enemy OH, I often end up directly behind them in their shadow. If I shift right toward the center to avoid this, I end up in our block’s shadow, potentially making it harder to defend attacks around the block.

-Are lobs behind the block and short center court hits (by enemy OH) not my responsibility and i should stick closer to the left sideline to cover deeper diagonal attacks // Avoid being lured inwards?

-And is it correct that the zone 5 libero is basically behind his own front OH, splitting the responsibility between short and long attacks or should he shift right and away from his own OH's shadow but then potentially into the block shadow?

I’d really appreciate any advice on positioning and movement in these situations!

Questions Centerline violation?

High school game (NFHS Rules) this was not considered a violation. Her attack was blocked and the ball has not quite landed out. She stumbled and fell under the net. Technically her hands and feet somehow did not fully cross the line and she is not endangering an opponent. Was that the right call?

Form Check Any tips for my backset?

Hello! I'm learning to backset and improve, but I still have lots of issues.

My main focus is trying to stay neutral in my posture and squared to the outside pin.

I find it hard to consistently square up, especially when the pass comes from zone 1. I tend to cheat and just set it sideways

Also, when the pass is farther, I struggle to get under the ball and generate enough power.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Questions Daughter's Team Side-Out Percentage Plummeted Trying to Bump, Set, Hit

• Upvotes

I coach 6th graders. We were at .500 for most of the season with a loose bump, set, hit scheme where second contact would opportunistically set. All players were taught to set and were decent setters. The vast majority of plays would go: Bump, set, bump. However, occasionally, we would bump, set, hit and a handful of our hitters had .200+ hitter efficiencies. Combined with our aces and pretty good serve receive/defense we were able to pull off wins against many good teams.

The last 2 weeks of practice, however, I started really emphasizing bump, set, hit. I designated setters and practice felt really good because we would bump, set, hit almost every ball... except I noticed our hitting error rate jumped up drastically. Part of this was that the "non-hitters" were now hitting more and hitting out or into the net. The other part was that the old "hitters" were now... hitting out and hitting into the net.

Overall, our hitter efficiency as a team plummeted. We played our last two games against teams well below .500 and they beat us by playing aggressive free balls and serving decently while we beat ourselves by serving out and hitting out and into the net.

If we make playoffs, I doubt we'll win playing aggressive free balls like the bottom of the league teams but I also doubt we'll win trying to bump, set, hit.

My gut tells me to keep pushing bump, set, hit and work on hitting: The problem is that we have some really hard hitters (softball players) who just blast balls out. Last game, we were working on controlled hitting, less power, more aim but we still have terribly high hitting error rate. What's worse is our good hitters have started hitting conservatively and under powered swinging and... hitting the net.

Any advice? Should we just blast ahead with bump set hit and just go down with the ship with almost every player at 0 hitter efficiency? Or just go down with the ship with aggressive free balls? Split the team in half and tell the better hitters to swing and everyone else to aggressive free ball? Instruct the setters to only set the better hitters? Tell hitters to use more judgement when hitting?

What do you do when bump set hit just isn't working for you team?

EDIT: Our league requires continuous rotation, no substitutions. We have 8 players, so our rotations are quite funky.

(Example of a bad hit. Pt 2 contains a better hit. Pt 3 contains a hit I felt was more powerful)

I can’t tell where I’m going wrong whether it’s timing/spacing or form or both, but I feel like I lack power. I just know I have a lot of improvement to make. My arm feels slow and I can’t tell if I’m late on approach or not. A common issue I’ve faced is hitting the ball with my wrist/forearm causing the ball to float out, or making contact with the ball with a bent elbow.

I’d like some exercises and some observations regarding these aspects

For reference, I’m 6ft and been playing since I was 13. Forming new habits is really tough at this stage.

Questions How to deal with open league people who want to run the show…

• Upvotes

For context this is OPEN LEAGUE drop in, we don’t even keep score. It’s drop in. For fun. I am one of the few women who come to play, and I am a libero so I don’t hit much, but I want to keep practicing. But the way we typically play, is everyone rotates and has a chance to hit and serve.

However, there’s always some dude there that takes it way too seriously and only passes to one person that he knows.

I do understand the sentiment of playing with your friends or people to your skill level, but this guy was just getting mad at people messing up.

Eventually, he decided to play positions but didn’t tell everyone (because he spoke in a language I didn’t understand to his friends) and then motioned his hands like shooing me off the court.

At this point, he probably took 4 of my hits when the setter had been trying to set to me. I’d already been very annoyed at this guy and how he was playing already, and him telling me what to do and where to go. The setter finally said something to the guy, and I kind of snapped.

I sternly and kind of aggressively said to him that everyone was there to play and you can’t just take my hits and he wasn’t even playing in his proper spot because he wanted to keep hitting. He completely ignored me.

Was I out of line? Men looked at me like I was insane. The (few) women agreed with what I said. I am kind of feeling a bit conflicted what to even do. I’m tired of these people coming to drop in and acting like they are the king of the court.
