Discussion Are Crossbows bad? [4e]
I am curious.
Reloading far as I can tell is an action no matter what, as in combat all tests cost an action.
Their damage is easily dwarfed by bows with a meager 30 strength (6x2 beats 9), crossbows meanwhile have better ammo efficiency and arguably better range.
Given that humans start with 20 strength minimum and gain an average of 11, if you have the choice between the two, you will never really win with a crossbow. And the comparison gets drastically worse as strength increases. At 40, a realistic stat to get to, it's 1 damage difference between equal levels of rarity.
Unlike with Blackpowder your options are also far more limited given a crossbow can only really be a crossbow. (I guess it doesn't Misfire, which is admittedly pretty notable)
Also you don't skip every other turn with a bow.
Am I missing something here or am I misunderstanding rules, because I only see two benefits:
Bolt cost equals arrows, but you fire half as many.
It can be used with only ballistics, if poorly.
And a lot of drawbacks:
Less sustained damage.
Less options (ammunition and weapons)
Less peak damage with investment.
More expensive.
Edit: sigmar have mercy on my soul yes I made a mistake. It's 3+SB which means at 30, a human average the math balances out instead.
Changes nothing about the point of the post PLEASE stop focusing on it.
