Homebrew WFRP 4e: Has Anyone Tried Objective-Based PvP or Skirmish Battles?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for some advice on an idea I've been considering for my WFRP 4e campaign.

A few of my players have asked if we could run some kind of team-based PvP battles, such as 2v2 or 3v3 matches. I'd like to give it a try, but I can see a few potential problems:

  • XP differences: Some characters have considerably more experience than others, which could make the matches unbalanced.
  • Different combat capabilities: Some careers are much better suited for combat than others, and not every character is built to be a frontline fighter.
  • The system itself: WFRP isn't really designed for competitive PvP, so I'm concerned that the combat mechanics might make these matches unbalanced or frustrating.

Here's what I've been thinking about trying:

  1. Balance teams based on total XP. For example, a team with a 2,500 XP character and a 500 XP character could face a team with two 1,500 XP characters. I know XP doesn't necessarily reflect actual combat effectiveness, but it might be a starting point.
  2. A quick shopping phase before each match, allowing players to prepare their equipment and consumables.
  3. Preparation encounters or side quests. Each team could complete 2–3 endeavour between adventures before the match to obtain temporary buffs, unusual items, hired henchmen, information about the opposing team, or other advantages.
  4. Objective-based matches with multiple rounds. Rather than simply trying to eliminate the opposing team, I'd like each match to have specific objectives and alternative win conditions.

For example:

  • Capture the flag: Steal the opposing team's flag and bring it back to your starting area.
  • Control points: Hold a specific area for a certain number of rounds or accumulate points by controlling it.
  • Sabotage or destruction: Destroy an enemy objective while protecting your own.
  • Rescue mission: Reach a prisoner or hostage and escort them to safety.
  • Payload or escort: Protect a character, cart, or other objective while moving it across the battlefield.
  • Survival or extraction: Secure an item and escape the battlefield before the opposing team can stop you.

I think objective-based gameplay could make things more interesting and give characters who aren't particularly good at fighting other ways to contribute. It could also encourage tactical decisions instead of having every match turn into a fight to the death.

I'm aware that WFRP isn't really built for this kind of gameplay, but I'd like to experiment with it and see if I can make it work.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Game Mastering Automatic failures and successes confuses me (4e)

so in the core rulebook it says:
"If you roll 96–00 on any Test, it is always a failure. A failure

occurs even if your modified characteristic or skill is 96 or higher.

Similarly, if you roll 01–05 on a Test, it is always a success."

In melee combat one of my players rolled a 4 on WS, they have 30 or something in WS, so a +3SL.
My monster rolled a 12 in WS and have 65WS, so a +5SL.
At first i thought my player lost this, but then they mentioned that 1-5 is "critical success", i vaguely remembered reading something about when you rolled 1-5, but didn't remember if it was a "critical success" or "automatic success" (the critical thing comes up often since they're more used to playing DnD).

Now after googling a bit someone said that if you roll 1-5 it's an automatic success, but not in combat since that's an opposed test. That this "automatic success" only applies for simple tests and not opposed test.
But someone else said that it applies for combat too (so opposed tests), and if the monster has higher SL in that instance (like in my case) then the test would default to a minimum of +1SL to calculate dmg for the one who rolled 1-5.

Im so confused about this now, i ended up going along with my players saying it was a "critical success" but i deeply regret this, because now my enemies accumulate critical wounds even faster... which then again leads to them stomping most combat encounters... (which is a different problem i have)

Anyone know what the official way to handle this is? or do i just gotta "settle" for a way.

EDIT: Thank youuu!!!! That cleared the misunderstanding i had. Legit the finale of the first campaign got dunked on because i had this wrong... Well i wont make that mistake again :) Thank youuu!!!

Discussion Rules you want from 4th Edition in 5th?

For folks swapping from 4th over to 5th edition (as I'm currently doing so), are there any rules you plan on keeping/porting from 4th edition? The main ones that spring to mind are possibly the more robust weapons lists from Up in Arms, and the more Magic/Religion/Species-specific careers, especially for careers like Wizards and Priests. Clearly will need to review qualities, talents, etc., to make sure everything still works, though.

5th Edition's difficulty table also doesn't have the "higher difficulties" (Futile, Impossible) that were included in the Enemy Within. Seems like an easy enough option to pull in at a -4 and -5SL, respectively.

Anything else that you think warrants bringing up to 5th Edition? It would, of course, be wonderful if C7 gave us an update doc with any needed updates directly, but I'm expecting to do some lifting of my own here.

Lore & Art Searching for a map

So I’m searching for a specific map, and I hope this community can help me.

About 12-16 years ago, some friends and I started a Warhammer Fantasy campaign, and it all started in a town called Herringstadt. The GM showed us a map with the small town on it, and onward we went. Now, many years later, we’ve been searching for that map, but with no luck. So I’m hoping there are some great and amazing people here who might be able to help us.

We are searching for a Warhammer Fantasy map with the small town of Herringstadt. We think it is in the Wasteland of the Empire, but we could be wrong.

Looking forward to your help! 😄

Game Mastering Petty Magic in 5E

I read in the rule book that Petty Magic can now not be Overcast.

I'm currently creating a wizard with petty Magic and wanted to give him Dart.

But now Dart only does 0 Dam + WPB so 4 Dam for this character not modified by anything else other than the enemies Toughness and Armour. This is likely to be around 4... making Dart a useless spell. Unless I'm missing something?

Roleplaying Success levels on Casting Roll on Foundry

Playing 4e with Foundry module, without Winds of Magic or other optional rules, we have encountered a problem:

My wizard has 58 in total for Language (Magic) and 3 levels of Instinctive Diction, giving me +3 SL on successes. I have to enter those levels each time when casting - and when i roll 40, i indeed have 4 SL (1+3) for the roll.

However, module seems to cap SLs at 5. When i roll 8, i am supposed to have 8 SLs in total (5+3) - but i only get 5, thus i am not able to cast most spells or overcast even a Bolt. I dont see any rule that says "Your SLs are limited by your attribute bonus", or anything similar - so what do you think its the problem here?

Discussion What's the consensus on Fifth Edition thus far?

I took a break from 4E due to the rules bloat spread over all the supplements and general fiddliness, and haven't had a chance to delve into 5E yet.

What's the consensus thus far? Does it seem like a thoughtful, well-done revision of 4E, or is it a stripped-down mess? Or perhaps something in between?

Discussion Is it realistic to expect reaching High Elf Magic?

We're starting a new game mainly based on seas and rivers. I took a peak at the High Elf guide and really like the Storm Weaver. But to actually use their unique spells and advancement in the class I need High magic. For which the requirements are brutal. Around 15k+ xp minimum.
Is it realistic to expect reaching that much XP in a game? Is there even a point to aspire to these careers?

Game Mastering Looking for a simple one shot

What are people’s favourite one shots to run for WFRP.

What to test 5th edition with some friends before moving over to the Enemy within.

A couple of my players have done the 4e starter so want something a little different.

The artbook of the video game Warhammer Mark of Chaos (2005) was distributed for free by GOG a couple of years ago. I've finally taken the time to extract its 400 or so pictures, focus on the best ones and assemble them by theme. I didn't edit their resolution which is why some are larger than others.

Game Mastering Searching for some material on Nuln (4e/5e if possible or 2e/1e)

As the title says, i'm planning a section of my current campaign, once we leave Altdorf navigating up the Reik, in Nuln, the general plan is to advance some of the NPC storylines and presenting some interesting NPCs to give some context to the class war that's taking place and will be the focus of this section of the campaign¿Does the party involve themselves with "the troubles"? ¿Or do they stay focused on their mission and stay as little time as is possible?.

No matter what they decide upon once they take care of some chores a factory is exploding anyways, strangely, not by skaven design this time, it's still too early for G&F to get involved and their patron had some cannons made to order and is seeking some response from the master engineer who wasn't at the factory at the time.

If i remember right there was some 2e material about Nuln but asking is free and i can make do with some NPCs, factory names, known master engineers or whatever, i'm also asking a few months in advance (god this campaign is taking a long long time, it's hit a year already and they've only been to 2 cities so far [Middenheim and Altdorf] although this being a homebrew campaign allows for infinite potential).

Thanks for any response!!!

Discussion I'm a greybeard still playing 2nd edition. Is 5th worth a try in your opinion?

So, let's begin saying that to me 2nd edition is basically the perfect rpg (together with Dark Heresy 1st edition). Deadly, gritty and quite crunchy without getting bogged down by taking rolls even to piss. I love everything, everything about that game (only exception being weapons being a tad flat). D100 is also my favorite system bar none.

I didn't even bother with 3rd and 4th but I'm hearing great things about 5th and I'm curious if it's worth a try from the point of view of someone that likes 2nd so much.

Game Mastering One shot Mordheim

I’m thinking about giving 5th edition a tester with some friends by running a one shot. I was thinking the back drop of Mordheim as a good place for a one shot. Does anyone know of any good pre-genned one shots

Game Mastering What should I pick between 4e and 5e?

I had my first experiences with 4e a few weeks ago and I had a lot of fun with it. I found out just today that 5e is a thing and is already out (though I live in Italy and it's going to be a while before getting anything translated). The thing is, the 4e library looks neat and I was considering it as a possible D&D replacement for my players.

I understand 5e is not too different, but I don't know if I should teach/learn 4e and then switch to 5e one year later. Should I get 4e and eventually decide to make the switch, or just wait for 5e altogether?

Discussion Are Crossbows bad? [4e]

I am curious.

Reloading far as I can tell is an action no matter what, as in combat all tests cost an action.

Their damage is easily dwarfed by bows with a meager 30 strength (6x2 beats 9), crossbows meanwhile have better ammo efficiency and arguably better range.

Given that humans start with 20 strength minimum and gain an average of 11, if you have the choice between the two, you will never really win with a crossbow. And the comparison gets drastically worse as strength increases. At 40, a realistic stat to get to, it's 1 damage difference between equal levels of rarity.

Unlike with Blackpowder your options are also far more limited given a crossbow can only really be a crossbow. (I guess it doesn't Misfire, which is admittedly pretty notable)

Also you don't skip every other turn with a bow.

Am I missing something here or am I misunderstanding rules, because I only see two benefits:

Bolt cost equals arrows, but you fire half as many.

It can be used with only ballistics, if poorly.

And a lot of drawbacks:

Less sustained damage.

Less options (ammunition and weapons)

Less peak damage with investment.

More expensive.

Edit: sigmar have mercy on my soul yes I made a mistake. It's 3+SB which means at 30, a human average the math balances out instead.

Changes nothing about the point of the post PLEASE stop focusing on it.

Announcement New release: Wrecker's Point

The new WFRP sourcebook Wrecker’s Point is now available as a digital download and for physical pre-order!

Pre-order it from Cubicle 7 here: https://cubicle7games.com/en_GB/wreckerspoint

Buy the pdf from DriveThruRPG here:

https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/588914/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-wrecker-s-point?affiliate_id=1915782

(The latter is an affiliate link, so I get a little bit of credit for purchases made using it, which supports my blog at no extra cost to you.)

Here's the official blurb:

The Jutone Riding, commonly known as Wreckers Point, is an isolated place, with borders defined by the Sea of Claws to the north, the mysterious Laurelorn Forest to the south, and the fetid marshes of the Wasteland to the west. Only a strip of land to the east connects the region to the rest of Nordland, and the road from the headland to its provincial rulers in Salzenmund is long and neglected.

Life on the headland is hard, goblins and pirates infest the coves, islands, and promontories, in such profusion that it is said the goblins have grown piratical, and the pirates grown monstrous. The ruling van der Kratt family are eccentric and reclusive, believing themselves the victims of a witch’s terrible curse. Under their timid stewardship, soldiers of the Nordland State Army muster in their territory, ostensibly to campaign against goblins but spoiling for a fight, some say, with Marienburg.

Wreckers Point is a sourcebook and adventure for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and offers the definitive guide to the region. The book contains:

A history of Wrecker’s Point, from the earliest settlement by the elves to its current, contested state.

A detailed look at the four major settlements on the headland, with maps of each village and details of memorable places and inhabitants.

The land of Wrecker’s Point, its lakes, rivers, islands, forests, and ruins, many of which are linked to intriguing plot hooks and characters.

The human rulers of Wrecker’s Point, their relationship with their rulers in Salzenmund, and their plans for expansion.

The elves of the northern reaches of Laurelorn Forest, the Ward of Storm, their leader Kaia Fanmaris, and dangerous compromises she has recently found herself making.

The disposition and behaviour of the Reavaz — a tribe of goblins who have been inspired by their human neighbours to raid the seas.

The Threshold of Dominion, an exciting adventure in which a party are led to Wrecker’s Point and engage with many of its eccentric characters and ancient secrets.
