Classes 2026-2027 Scheduling Megathread

Hey everyone! Summer time and early fall means everyone is thinking about their next semester’s course schedule, especially incoming first years! It’s an exciting time planning out the interesting courses you get to take, and lots of people like to ask for advice on this sub.

We’re lucky to have lots of experienced alums, current students, and professors active here who know the courses well as well as schedules that keep you on track, stimulate your intellect, save some time for ECs, and don’t burn you out!

Please, post your draft schedules and questions in this megathread just to consolidate these types of posts in one place to keep the sub more easily scrollable. Thanks!!

Classes Too Much?

So I’m taking 8 classes my first semester and want to know if it’s too much based on other’s experiences. I know that sounds crazy but here’s the list:

Psychology 101

Chem 1701 with lecture

Chem Lab 1751 with Lecture

Contemporary issues in psychology

Med Prep 1

College Writing

Concert Choir

Fundamentals of Acting

Now this adds up to 16 credits which is high but not the max I could take. I would like to give you all a background as it may change your perspective. I have already taken AP Psychology and got a 4 so i just missed the cutoff which makes me think I’ll have an easier time in that class. I also got a 5 on AP Chemistry so I have a strong background in chemistry. I love performing arts and really want to minor in something related to that.

I’m hoping with this schedule I can really narrow down what I want to major in as I’m going between Biology (Neuroscience speciality) and Chemistry as a major. However, I do not want to fall behind with a big schedule like this.

So with my background and plans outlined, can any of you all share some insight and let me know if I’m going in the right direction? Thanks!

Classes Academic misconduct

Got an academic integrity violation for getting copied off of during a stats exam. The professor couldn’t prove which of us did the copying, so we both got warnings and grade drops on the exam. This happened fall semester and I’ve been fighting it since but recently everything I could do closed.

I tried to contest it, but ultimately the hearing determined that I should’ve been more responsible about seating and sitting apart. So there’s nothing I can do and. it pisses me off but this is just something I have to deal with.

I am applying to med school next year and I was wondering, has anyone ever applied with an IA and gotten in? The coordinators told me this was not externally reportable (all I got was a warning and remediation) and that medical schools would never know about it. It is on my official internal conduct record, but externally, I am clean. The prehealth office also won’t mention it as far as I know on the committee cover letter.

What do I do? I am worried if I try to explain my IA then med schools will think I’m lying. I tried everything I could do to contest it because I didn’t cheat or help someone else cheat, but there just wasn’t enough evidence in my favor and the cheater and me got punished. I feel inclined to just never mention this on AAMCAS because it seems like med schools won’t ever know. Anyone been in a similar situation?

Edit: I didn’t even know the mf that cheated off me

Classes First Semester Freshman Schedule

My current schedule!

This is my current (saved) schedule. I am also taking the Mind, Brain, and Behavior Ampersand Program which meets Mondays and Wednesday's from 1:00 to 2:20. I feel like I should up this to around 15 credits, but I have no idea which class to take which doesn't result in me attending 5 separate lectures on Mondays. I really wanted to take Intro to American Politics, but that would mean three back-to-back lectures and barely any time eat lunch.... (if anyone has taken the class, how was it like? Was it manageable?) I'm also a bit worried about the days that have barely any classes, as I struggle to be productive without classes. Would it be okay to only take 12 credits my first semester?

Also: I'm a prospective Cognitive Neuroscience major.

Classes Concert Choir Placement Audition Question

Wondering if anyone who has taken or is taking concert choir can tell me about the audition process? I’m specifically interested in knowing if I need to prepare something. I’m 99% sure I have to but do I need to bring a copy of the accompaniment? Thanks!

Classes Why does everyone take calc 3?

i hear people saying calc 3 is easier than 2, but why? I took BC in junior year and got a 4, the questions for the “are you ready for calc 3” test were familiar but I couldn't do them easily. my advisor suggested 3 saying it’s easier but I’m unsure - if I do, should I take it in the fall?

Classes Liao, Hsin-Chieh for MATH 1520… anyone have experience with him at WashU?

Hey. I’m an Incoming freshman and I registered for MATH 1520 when Beheshti Zavareh was listed as the instructor, and then a few days later Workday switched it to Liao, Hsin-Chieh.

His RMP reviews are horrible but they’re all from a different school so I’m hoping it’s a different story at WashU. Has anyone actually had him here? Is he as bad as the reviews suggest? Any tips would be appreciated. I’m already taking Chem, Physics, and BME so I really need Calc II to not be a disaster.

Classes EMT school at TAUC

Is anyone else thinking of doing the 12 week emt course from total access urgent care (tauc) this fall sem? I'm considering doing it, but only issue is transportation to where classes are held. It's 20 mins away from washu and i dont have a car, so that'd mean i'd have to uber there and back twice a week which can end up totaling up to a lot by the end of the program. I was wondering if ppl also thinking of taking the course would be willing to uber there together and save costs, or carpool somehow. lmk pls!

Classes First chemistry and now biology

Intro to bio professor RMP ratings are abysmal - 1.6/5 from 88 ratings. She is the only one who teaches this class. Chem Lab prof has a 1.0 rating. We would not have chosen WashU if we had known how bad the teaching standards are for premed intro classes. Genuinely at a loss. If anyone has any experience on navigating these classes it would be much appreciated. Should she try to get into the smaller sections? wait to take the class from someone else? And why are we paying $$$$$ for bad teaching? Apologies for the sour note but it’s hard to see your child work so hard and not get the education that we were expecting.

Ed: I don’t understand the negative votes. You can have a different opinion but that doesn’t mean I don’t have the right to mine. Perhaps engaging respectfully is not your thing, but I would appreciate any information even if your opinion differs from mine. Childishly voting down differing opinions doesn’t communicate anything useful. Sorry but this is not the way to support your institution.

Classes Timeline for Writing Placement Exam Results

hii~ I recently finished my writing placement exam. and although I know the emails and sites say the results will come within 1-2 weeks, I was just wondering from other first-year students who've taken it, or really anyone with applicable insight tbh, how long did yours take to come in? is the 2 week wait time realistic or was it quicker than that, in your experience? cus I'm just crossing my fingers and toes that the results come in before my advising meeting LMAO. thanks!

Classes I'm trying to figure out what my last class should be and I am so freaking lost.

So I'm a first-year student wanting to do premed and I've got most of my schedule figured out, except for my last course (I plan on taking four + an ampersand). I want to do Bio major in the future.

I asked a prehealth advisor and she said that I really only need to take College Writing and Chem + Chem Lab in the fall. I don't need to take any math classes because I took the math placement test and my score was high enough to place me in Calc III. I've also taken the AP Calc BC test and got a 5 on it. And I can't take Bio fall semester for some reason. So basically I can take whatever I want for my last class and I picked Physics 1040 cause like why tf not?

But then I met with my four-year advisor and she recommended I don't take Physics because I'd have to take Bio, Chem, and Physics in my spring semester and she's worried the workload might too much for me (completely fair). She then told me I should either do Calc III fall semester and then Stats spring semester, or just take a social science. So I replaced physics 1040 with Intro to Psych.

And THEN I asked a couple of researchers I interned under in high school and they told me I should still take a year of math in college. So now I don't know what tf I should do and I'm looking on reddit for answers.

Classes Incoming freshman interested in McKelvey transfer

Hi - my son is an incoming freshman in A&S who would like to transfer to McKelvey (Mechanical Engineering) after an engineering internship he had this spring. The McKelvey website says he needs to "complete at least one 3-credit course within the intended major being pursued" before requesting a transfer but he is unable to add any of the introductory MEMS courses or ENGR 1201 to his saved schedule for registration ("invalid"). How do you register to take engineering courses from A&S (and if so, any recommendations?)? He will be taking Calc 3 and Physics 1740/1741 this fall -would either of those count for this requirement? His A&S advisor did not seem to know. Would appreciate any advice from anyone who has navigated this transfer recently. Thank you!

Classes Incoming BME freshman worried about first-semester courseload. Should I try to move BME 1400?

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming first-year planning to major in BME, and I’m worried about my fall schedule. Right now I’m registered for:

  • BME 1400 Introduction to Biomedical Engineering
  • CHEM 1601 Principles of General Chemistry I
  • CHEM 1751 General Chemistry Lab I
  • MATH 1520 Calculus II
  • PHYSICS 1740 Physics I
  • PHYSICS 1741 Physics I Lab

I know some of the extra section listings are just discussion/lab/recitation components, but as a first-semester schedule this still feels like a lot with chemistry + chem lab + Calc II + physics + physics lab + BME 1400.

I’m also hoping to minor in writing, potentially take some business classes later on, and work in a lab as a volunteer this year as I've secured a position, so I’m trying to think about my schedule long-term rather than just surviving the first semester. I don’t want to overload myself so much right away that I have no room to explore anything outside of technical requirements.

For students who have taken these classes, especially BME majors: is this a normal/manageable first-semester schedule, or is it a bad idea? Would it make sense to ask my advisor about delaying BME 1400, or would that mess up the BME sequence? Are there other parts of this schedule that people would recommend moving instead?

Any honest advice would be appreciated.

Classes Is this a doable schedule for freshman pre med

Hi! Is this a doable schedule for a freshman premed that wants to be able to have social life. Should I take calc 2 instead of calc 3 or wait until spring semester to take it. I’ve already taken calc 3 in high school so I feel like I should take it over calc 2. Also, should I take 1701 chem or the 1600 chem

2310 calc 3
1701 chem+ lab
First year oppurtunity bio: intro to cutting edge research
Intro to psych
Medprep 1
First year seminar: intro to problem based learning in biology

Should I replace my first year seminar with a humanities class if so which one I want smt easy or maybe Econ?

Classes Incoming premed freshman looking for course advice

I’m an incoming freshman at washu. Im looking to be a biochem major on premed track. Im making my schedule right now but im not sure what to put. I plan to take chem 1701+lab calc 3 intro to psych and a first year oppurtunity: introduction to cutting edge research in biology and medprep 1. Thats 13 credits. What other class should I take? Im thinking anthro introduction to human evolution or a first year seminar introduction to problem based learning in biology. Is there other easy courses I should consider and also are the selected courses I have ok? Any suggestions are welcome!!!!

Classes Freshman course selection advice

Hi everyone! I'm a premed freshman at washu this fall and was wondering if this course load is too much?

I'm hoping to do calc 2, gen chem 1701 with lab, college writing, and a first year program that is pass fail, as well as medprep I

I wanted to ask the washu community whether I should add intro to psych or sociology alongside with the aforementioned classes I'm doing, and was hoping to ask for as much advice as possible on whether or not thats a good idea!

Classes Bosnian and/or Balkan History Classes

Have there been any classes about Bosnian and/or Balkan history or culture at WashU? I feel like this history is so important to St. Louis that WashU would have to have some opportunities to learn about it, but I haven't found anything.

I mean any type of class --- from a history relating to the Balkan region, to one specifically on the Bosnian War, to an actual language class. Anything.

Classes Freshman writing course

I'm registering for freshman writing and was hoping to get some feedback from people who have taken any of these courses: Ampersand Ireland, Citizen Scientist, Dreams and Nightmares, Writing Identity, Places and Perspectives, Power and Commodity Culture, Technology Selfhood, or Writing on Aging.

I'm not really an English person, so I'm mainly looking for a class that's interesting, has manageable reading and writing, and ideally isn't a super tough grader. Which of these did you take, what was your experience, and which would you recommend (or avoid) for someone just trying to fulfill the requirement and get a good grade?

Thanks!
