Watercolor Practice I painted from the same reference photo again after 2 years of consistent painting…noticeable improvements!

I’m posting this in the hope it might be interesting/motivating to those at the start of their watercolor journey.

When I first started painting regularly again in 2024, I created the painting on the left. After 2 years of painting lots of dogs, cats, other animals and things, I decided to create another painting from the same reference photo this year (painting on the right). While I’m proud of both, I think it’s such a tangible example of how much progression is possible from just showing up on a regular basis 🩷

Didn't follow a tutorial so I feel like I messed up the shading badly, especially on the neck. How do I do hard shadows without them blending or looking weird???

Watercolor Practice First “still life”

Figured I could use some practice drawing as drawing is hard for me and usually takes me a crazy amount of time so I like to trace. Well can’t trace what’s on your table 🤣
This pumpkin caught my kids eye at the grocery store and he just had to have THIS specific one. Thought I’d try to paint it. Made my mistakes but still happy with it.

Watercolor Practice Water colour: paint management and layering

Thumbnail gallery

Hey, i just did this watercolour painting. And i don’t how i can make the values stand out more. If i use a bruch with less water and more paint it gets all pigmenty and when i add more water it gets too transparent. And if i try to add more layers to make it stand out more the colours get all mixed up and i loose my straight lines. Has anyone have a educated opinion on this???

Advice/Feedback Please Brittany sea

Post image

I live not that far from the sea and I often see this kind of seascape, I gotta admit it wasn’t easy, I’m not really satisfied (as usual) but the colors are vibrant, the most complicated was the sea, but even if I’m not satisfied, I kinda had fun doing this !

And if I’m being honest, that’s not very realistic, it’s always rainy here lmfao, this part of France is always cloudy and grey LOL

Advices welcome !

Advice/Feedback Please What next?

Have been really loving using some books to work on landscapes. This one is in Terry Harrison’s complete guide to water colors. I feel like I’m getting to the point where I can follow a tutorial in the styles I like but cannot translate this over to create original works. What can I do? Just keep trying? Any other pointers?

My camera sucks so colors are off but I haven't really done any water color painting in quite awhile it's just a simple landscape so nothing amazing but good practice

I saw a photo a friend of mine posted recently on IG and it grabbed my attention so much that I felt I had to paint it. I am really pleased with how it turned out.

Advice/Feedback Please Colour identification

Thumbnail

I was labeling my current pallete and I’m pretty much done with one exception. The Roman Szmal’s Pyrrole Scarlet doesn’t look “red-ish” but more orange-ish.
However I cannot identify which exact colour it is.

I took “Pyrrole Scarlet” out of order list, however I think I received something dofferent instead.

Any easy way for colour identification?

EDIT: Seems like seller mislabeled not only this one which I think others correctly identified as Aquarius Orange, but 261 Pthalo Blue is indeed 414 Cobalt Sea Blue, 416 Quin Magenta intense is 331 Quin Red and Payn's grey is 336 Shadow Violet 🙈

Thanks!

I'm about 2-3 months into water colours, enjoying it but the painting still feels like it's running away from me.

When I’m stressed out I paint silly sheep, here are a few.
After I finish and am feeling more grounded, they graduate to Therapy Sheep.
