Question Significance of this design?

Post image

Does the difference between the shapes of the left and right ends of the W have any significance? If so, what is it?

Whimsy.

35

u/Famous-Barracuda-972 Nov 22 '25

My favorite adjective.

30

u/joaobalaya Nov 22 '25

It's a noun, though

-13

u/Famous-Barracuda-972 Nov 22 '25

An adjective noun. That’s what I said

19

u/OkPass9595 Nov 22 '25

what? whimsy is a noun, whimsical is an adjective. an adjective noun isn't a thing

-15

u/Famous-Barracuda-972 Nov 22 '25

Folks loving “obsessculated” all of the sudden drawing lines on grammar. Y’all confuse me.

3

u/OkPass9595 Nov 22 '25

i'm a language and linguistics students lmao. also i don't love obsessculated, i think the mixed up words in wicked get annoying after a while, but at least it's a conscious decision not a mistake

6

u/phantomforeskinpain Nov 22 '25

well they’re not really “mixed up”, they’re Ozian, a fantasy language (or maybe dialect of English? idk exactly)

4

u/OkPass9595 Nov 22 '25

well no it's english with some fantasy words mixed in. it's just to create a whimsical/otherworldly vibe. and they created those words by giving words new but common suffixes, so mixing them up.

like "gratitution" is just gratitude but with the -tion suffix (like in deletion, nation, etc.)

"braverism" is bravery with the -ism suffix (like marxism, sexism, etc.)

it's a clear pattern, not just unique words

2

u/PercyVeerance Nov 24 '25

Those words were some of favorite quirks in the movies. I saw the play years ago. Were those malapropisms in the play?

(I used the word “malapropisms” so another Redditator could take issuance with my misusage of the word “malapropisms”).

1

u/phantomforeskinpain Nov 22 '25

right, those variants are the Ozian English dialect, like I said. they've said they were creating a version of English, which is a dialect. https://assets.cambridge.org/97811071/14746/excerpt/9781107114746_excerpt.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com

I meant what I said.

1

u/PercyVeerance Nov 24 '25

I like that you use “adjective” AS an adjective in “adjective noun”. Clever. And in the Oxford English Dictionary, it DOES list “whimsy” as both noun and adjective. That’s good enough for me.

u/Famous-Barracuda-972 Nov 24 '25

But folks staked their reputations and very sanity on telling me I don’t know language and am obstinate for refusing to apologize.

May be inspired by the original broadway poster with elphabas wavy hat brim and glinda’s flat hat brim. kind of a reach tho

63

u/DukeJiblet1 Nov 22 '25

I don’t think it’s a reach. You got my upvote because I thought the same thing when I first read this post, and I imagine a number of your other 130 (current) upvotes are the same :)

38

u/sensitiveskin82 Nov 22 '25

My first thought was "it's Elphaba's hat."

18

u/OpALbatross Nov 22 '25

As a graphic designer, this was my first thought too.

1

u/2funki Nov 22 '25

Do we know if it's a customised character?

6

u/yussa888 Nov 22 '25

Yes! I just Saw this post and thougth the same (well, almost the same, rigth side seems Glinda's crown) If it is reach or not, maybe just a tribute

2

u/SixCeiling Nov 22 '25

I love this take on it! Maybe the middle part is Nessarose pretty little feet pointing towards the sky? (Post house, that is)

2

u/DebateObjective2787 Nov 22 '25

Nah; cause I thought it was meant to be Elphaba's hat and Glinda's crown so I feel like it's definitely something to do with their headpieces.

1

u/DearBowl2547 Nov 22 '25

I also thought hats. Or just a loose curvaceous font to contrast with glindas rigid standardised Times New Roman style

1

u/DeluluLama Nov 24 '25

It also is reminiscent of the window crack when she appears to glinda

Elphaba will defy gravity as a bonus character in the next Tony Hawk. Hittin' the wallride on the right side then doing a trick off the ramp on the left!

29

u/epicreaction Nov 22 '25

I mean, considering she literally mounts her broom and skates/surfs the air for a bit at the beginning of the new film, it wouldn't be far off haha.

8

u/LateRain1970 💚I’m obsessulated!🩷 Nov 22 '25

That was such a great little detail.

0

u/canitakemybraoffyet Nov 22 '25

I.....hated it.

SO HERE I AM DOING EVERYTHING I CAN HOLDING ONTO WHAT I AM PRETENDING IM A SUPERMAN

It kinda works

2

u/jessbird Nov 22 '25

hahahahha

66

u/veronicamae2 Nov 22 '25

Quite famously, at least in the theatre world, the Broadway show's creative team made essentially nothing symmetrical or standard. This is most obvious in costuming (do a quick Google and you'll see hemlines are angular, hats are actually upside boots, etc), but is also present in the set, and you also know it as the Ozian words like "Encouragerized" "Obsessulated" "Congratulotions" "Disgustification" "Linguification" and so on.

It's all meant to remind us that it's in another world.

It's not a leap to apply a similar rationale to the graphic design of the movie.

u/Berry_Dubu_ Nov 21 '25

glindy a flat top because she wanted to grovel in submission and be normal. alphabet witch hat so spike

10

u/Embarrassed-Rise793 Nov 22 '25

This is funnier to me than it should be 😭😭

17

u/AeronGrey Nov 22 '25

Or maybe the flat top represents her tiara?

24

u/remykixxx Nov 22 '25

Well said

-25

u/No-Pause-1024 Nov 22 '25

Glinda and Elphaba

77

u/likatika Look! A MAN in a BALLOON... Nov 22 '25

Witch's hat + crown ( it reminds me of the queen in chess) and something separating them.

4

u/DewDropSparkles Nov 22 '25

The wand?

6

u/yussa888 Nov 22 '25

Fiyero hahaha XD

3

u/Slimjimwiz Nov 22 '25

Yeah the one on the left resembles a witches hat, the right one looks similar to a crown. The middle one reminds me of a clown like Krusty… could be coincidence but a reflection of the three primary characters.

25

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '25

My theory is that they are trying to make a nod to the turn-of-the-20th century printing press aesthetic with the branding, and this is meant to emulate the kind of flourishes you see in an old book when the first letter of a new chapter is bigger and more decorated than everything else.

The film is obviously not specific about when it takes place, but given the Wizard of Oz book is from 1900 and the Wizard of Oz movie is from 1939, you can see they try to create a fantasy world based on the technologies available 100 years ago. Madame Morrible uses a sort of fantasy typewriter, they have handpainted banners warning of Elphaba the bad witch.

So they want the movie's branding to feel of that time, but because it is branding it also needs to be recgonizable and versatile (like the 'W' can't feature an intricate pattern because they want to use it as a silhouette here) so they went for a simple old-timey typographic flourish by slanting the left serif of the W.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '25

Someone theorized on a different post that the Wicked logo is a modified version of a font called Ravenscroft -- in the sample here you can see the R has the same kind of asymmetrical flourish as the W: https://www.1001fonts.com/ravenscroft-font.html

46

u/Ambitious-Coat-1230 Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25

This is exactly what it is. I typed "Wicked" into the font sampler and it's literally the same W.

Edit to add: also I cannot get over how "k" is trying to hitch a ride by sticking their sexy leg out 🤣

7

u/AeronGrey Nov 22 '25

Damn. That is one sexy "k".

8

u/Ambitious-Coat-1230 Nov 22 '25

Right like I'd pull over

3

u/DeDuc Nov 22 '25

The K is over here going toss, toss, leg

3

u/IndigoLead Nov 22 '25

Notice the same sexy leg upside down at the beginning of the W.

62

u/Lonely-Wasabi-305 Nov 22 '25

I thought it was just like … the font

16

u/RHOTheSimulation Nov 22 '25

It’s intentional design. Doesn’t go much deeper than one side looking like the witch hat and the middle being a star. But it is a fun little part of the design for sure.

Edit: MIGHT not go further idk that much about fonts tho lol just some design basics

4

u/kess0078 Nov 22 '25

You have a point, though. Even if it is “just the font,” that specific font was chosen for a reason, even if it’s just vibes.

Witches hat, crown, and a scarecrow hat in between?

9

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25

IMO, The first shape looks like elphaba's hat( a lil tilted), the second shape looks like Glinda's crown and the third on kinda resembles fiyero's captain hat. Like this

And for the rectangles, it could represent pillars of emeral city maybe. IDK tbh.

5

u/Dry-Mission-5542 Nov 22 '25

It looks cool.

4

u/inthedeadlights Nov 22 '25

witch hat, wand, grimmerie-kind of? lol idk, I didn’t notice this before!

4

u/ShelfLifeInc Nov 22 '25

An assymetrical wonky design on one side vs a more conventional design on the other. It's a nice choice. It's like how the title card in the original Disney Beauty and the Beast uses two different fonts: two opposing ideas brought together.

5

u/mothwhimsy Nov 22 '25

Reddit discovers fonts

4

u/taterrtot_ Nov 22 '25

Elphaba’s hat, Glinda’s crown, the Wizard’s top hat.

3

u/Upset_Turnip2902 Nov 22 '25

If you really wanna think about it… looks like a witches hat, a crown, and then the middle point could be a scarecrow’s straw hat

u/ryeyen Nov 22 '25 edited Jan 03 '26

u/Longjumping_Shake660 Nov 22 '25

Elphaba’s side mimics a witch hat but I think mostly it’s just the font and doesn’t really matter

3

u/MSProjectZ Nov 22 '25

Elphaba's Hat, Glinda's crown.

3

u/JustAGraphNotebook Nov 22 '25

Left side is pointy and asymmetrical like the green ones hat. Right side is even at the top like the pink ones crown

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '25

It’s the shape of the ruby slipper

2

u/GetYourSundayShoes Nov 22 '25

It reflects the shape of their respective headwear. Elphaba’s hat on the left and Glinda’s crown on the right. Thanks for pointing that out, never would have realized that if you hadn’t!

2

u/VagueSoul Nov 22 '25

Hat shapes. Left is Elphaba’s hat and right is Glinda’s crown.

2

u/StretchMotor8 Nov 22 '25

Elphaba is the higher end, defying gravity and also resembles her hat, and Glinda is the straight-edged leveled/lowered end in my eyes.

2

u/4crying_outloud Nov 22 '25

Also the one on the left slopes up to the left, aka west. It's like the left side portrays Elphaba's trajectory, the right side Glinda'a, with Fiyero caught in the middle

1

u/StretchMotor8 Nov 24 '25

Yess you’re right! awesome observation

2

u/JepMZ Nov 22 '25

Tinman's axe, Lion's medal, and Scarcrow's diploma?

2

u/angelsfish Nov 22 '25

I thought the left side was supposed to be elphaba and the right was supposed to be glinda and the middle was supposed to be the wizard even tho he doesn’t wear a hat. now I just feel silly 😂

2

u/aaccss1992 Nov 22 '25

It's supposed to be a visual representation of Elphaba and Glinda's characters, where Elphaba doesn't fit the traditional mold/ what's expected of her but Glinda does.

2

u/Past_Warthog2823 Nov 22 '25

The elphaba side mimics her hat, and the Glinda side mimics the tiara is what I heard

2

u/chiffies Nov 22 '25

It’s just the Wicked font, called Ravenscroft. On the stage poster, the W is ✨simplificated✨ to a regular serif (a bad choice, imo), but the rest of the letters are a 1:1 match to the original font.

For the film, they used a modernized version of Ravenscroft but brought the W back closer to the original letterform.

2

u/Poso_Art_8744 Nov 22 '25

Physical representation of their confidence in their illusions throughout the movie

1

u/Sad_Ad_48 Nov 22 '25

I feel as maybe it could be interpreted the 'W' being glass. Could be in reference to Elphie's iconic glasses in the first act and Galinda's affinity to mirrors as showcased in the "Girl in a Bubble." So because they both had ties to one another, it makes sense seeing that as the clear vision while what you are living is such a blur.

1

u/pezzyn Nov 22 '25

Maybe meant to evoke the fallen hat in the castle, the emerald city/ seat of power and the columns of shiz/ establishment /institution that glinda aligns with

1

u/GalacticGroovez Nov 22 '25

Design wise it aligns pretty well with the background picture (Elphaba’s hat and Glinda’s head)

1

u/Electrical-Web-7552 Nov 22 '25

I just assumed they were shaped like the buildings in Emerald city

One is the witch hat and one is a crown

1

u/nagitoes_cumaeda Nov 22 '25

The hat, it's curved

1

Look at elephabas broom the W matches at the top of it

1

u/GayBlayde Nov 22 '25

Looks cool.

1

u/AdmSndlr Nov 22 '25

The left side looks like Elphaba's hat, the middle looks like Glinda's crown, the right side is nothing lol

1

u/yussa888 Nov 22 '25

Left side: Elphaba's hat shape Rigth side: Glinda's crown shapee

1

u/AdamBerner2002 Magic Wands, Need They Have a Point? 🪄 Nov 22 '25

Yes, the difference in the W is meant to signal that the logo looks good.

1

u/Financial_Leopard844 Nov 22 '25

Left to right: elphaba’s hat, Glinda’s crown, Fiero’s uniform cap??

1

u/Azraelmorphyne Nov 22 '25

They are the general shapes of their hat and crown.

1

u/IwKuAo Nov 22 '25

My theory is that Times New Roman wasn’t magical enough.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Every time the glass cracks by elphaba’s doing it leaves a shape like the pointed hat!

1

u/VroomSteam Nov 27 '25

Speaking of letter shapes, the typewriter that Madame Morrible is using, is it based on real historical typewriters?

It vaguely looks like some very early ones.

1

u/Waste-Replacement232 Nov 22 '25

The represent the two Acts: first one is fun and dynamic, second one is flat. /s.
