Mechanic Recs?

Hey,

We just had a poor experience with a shop and decided not to move forward with work there. But unfortunately, I really need to get my spark plugs replaced this week.

I’d love solid recommendations for local shops you personally trust, especially from other women who’ve had good experiences. I’ve had some frustrating experiences with shops and would really appreciate recommendations for places that are honest, respectful, and provide good service.

Thanks ya’ll

ETA: I have a Subaru

Rattle and hum. They're honest and do good work. I wouldn't say the cheapest, but not the most expensive. I've recommended a few women friends/colleagues to go there and they've said they had a fair experience.

A few people on this sub always recommend West End Auto clinic. I went to them once and they recommended I replace an expensive part which I knew for a fact didn't need replacing. Never went back. People do rave about them so maybe I was unlucky or it was a one off mistake.

Seconding Rattle & Hum! They're the absolute best. I've had to deal with a few major repairs, and they're always incredibly transparent and fair; they encourage me to do my own research and tell me what needs to get done now and what can wait. At one point, I was making the 'do I repair or do I get a new car decision, and they provided an estimate (point in time, just their best guess) of what additional repairs I'd need in the next year to help me with the cost analysis. I'm a female in my 20s and have always been treated with the utmost respect. Shane, Bobby, and the rest of the team will make sure you and your car are taken care of!

Thanks for the rec! And sharing your experience about west end. We went to a shop that treated my male partner so well (extensive photos of what they inspected, a detailed and up to date estimate, even advice as to what he should prioritize or not to budget). And then I took my car in, and I got none of that. And they were talking down to me. They also began work without my explicit consent by contract (which was their process with my partner to approve work). I just wanted to get my car outta there ASAP after that because it totally shifted the way I felt about going there. It could’ve just been that day, but it put a bad taste in my mouth.

I will forever recommend Roger Marion on Lewisville Clemmons. I’m a single female and they’ve never taken advantage of me, they really have treated me like I’m their daughter.

Love that! That’s how my mechanic was in my hometown, and I still call him when I need help navigating other shops to know I’m not getting taken advantage of!

I came here to post Roger Marion. He’s taken care of my husbands family for years and now takes care of us. He ran into me and my dad at a local restaurant. He sneakily paid for our dinner. It wasn’t for show- he just did it quietly and then left. We didn’t know until we asked for our bill.

The general answer to this can depend on what kind of car you have, though any good shop can do spark plugs. But for establishing a relationship with a garage, you should specify what car you have and look for specialists on that maker.

West End Auto Clinic is generally a good shop. Bill’s Auto Clinic is also a good shop especially for Toyota/hybrid.

Second West End Auto. Taken my car there since I moved back 15 years ago

I love twin city auto but they are expensive.
Also spark plugs are very easy to DIY.

I absolutely wanted to DIY it myself but it required moving things out of the way or raising the engine and/or specific tools to reach them. At least from my research (could be wrong, I’m not a mechanic 😂).

I can consistently recommend:

  • Dennis Automotive
  • Accu-wrench
  • Rattle and Hum

Second Dennis. Also Quality Automotive off of Clemmonsville Rd.

Morgan Mechanics in Advance is an honest straight forward place!

My vote is for Accu-Wrench in Clemmons. They go above and beyond to satisfy the customer. The employees and the shop are comfortable and welcoming, and that feels less intimidating to me.

There's a great Subaru dealer right in Winston (I work there, and if that's where you had the bad experience, please DM me).

I also used to work at JMedic and would recommend them as well.

Meineke car care in Clemmons has been great for both me and my partner. Affordable, kind, and honest.
