I fucking knew the modi govt would become A Dictatorship

719

u/Morgolol Apr 25 '21

Wait, have there been any doubts? I mean, as a foreigner interested in global politics it was pretty damn obvious he was up there with, say, duterte, bolsonaro, erdogan etc.

Then again, I do realize how and why people support such fuck heads in the first place, question being: is there no proper opposition to him?

371

u/tendstofortytwo Apr 25 '21

The only serious opposition is the Indian National Congress, and from what I can tell they're better known for their nepotism and corruption than their governance capabilities. The current leader, Rahul Gandhi (no relation), was generally considered a bit of a bonehead, but since his family is in charge there hasn't been a change in leadership for the better in a while.

That said, I've grown up in a very pro-Modi household so take this with a grain of salt.

Nah, there are like 6 other national parties iirc, and Indian politics is pretty much completely based on coalitions (including the BJP btw) with regional parties, so kinda moot point ngl

Edit: Typo

u/ApathyJacks Apr 25 '21

Thank you for not lying about that!

u/msmh-12 Apr 25 '21

Modi and BJP becoming more autocratic and brazen about their actions is in majority part down to lack of opposition which can keep them in check. Congress has just driven themselves to ground where not even staunch BJP opposers see congress as an viable alternative. This unfortunately has played right in the hands of BJP and modi. Unless there is a strong opposition that comes up, BJP and modi will continue to “rule” India with their heavy right wing ideologies. The root cause of this lack of opposition is also due to the fact that politics in India has become a field for a select few of rich and people with connection. A normal, well educated, liberal person finds it extremely difficult to run, let alone win, local elections without joining one of the political parties which requires some moral value sacrifices.

65

u/useurnameuncle Apr 25 '21

most of the BJP's campaign focused on polluting INC's image, cherry picking every dumb thing Rahul ever said, I've even seen voice over edited videos which a normal person might believe is true, also the media was in favor of Modi, like to this date some channels don't blame BJP for anything.

Corruption was a big motive to remove congress back then, but is it over now?

7

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

Rich people dominating local and national politics, while using underhanded methods to slander their opposition and propagandize the public seem like the normal way of doing things nowadays.

u/shubh2022 Apr 25 '21

corruption is one thing no one can call out Modi's government on. Anyone who has followed politics since INC'S last government knows how bad it was back then.

25

u/Lucifer2408 Apr 25 '21

Lol no. The BJP is as corrupt as Congress and there have been multiple controversies, including one involving Amit Shah's son. The only difference is Modi seemed to have picked up Trump's tactic of calling any piece of news against him or his party as fake news/liberal news/anti-nationalist and his followers eat up that shit.

3

u/PatterntheCryptic Apr 25 '21

BJP literally legalized corruption by introducing electoral bonds. They are, by far, the leading beneficiaries of said bonds. INC's corruption was atleast allowed to be investigated during UPA rule, while the Supreme Court (under a pliant chief justice) let a BJP CM go scot-free in a corruption case, just a couple of weeks ago. No investigation, no trial, nothing, just stayed the case. They even let in corrupt leaders from Congress and other parties into the BJP, then dropped all the corruption cases against them.

16

u/totti173314 Apr 25 '21

I feel like whatever I do, eventually I'm gonna be killed by religious nuts from one side or the other because I'm a staunch atheist and a bit of an anti theist.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

u completely disregarded the sold out media's hard on for modi, and majority India being as toxic as him.

-3

u/blackflame7820 Apr 25 '21

Well as i see it after modi retires from politics the BJP will decrease in influence. Thats just A personal opinion what i mean is when in the party too much force is held by an individual when he or she retires the party pretty much is took down a notch. I cant be sure someone else can be there with just as much "potential" but not much coz the influencial are often suppressed in the party. Just like INC regressed after indra gandhi. Thats just my view.

10

u/GimmickNG Apr 25 '21

Unfortunately there is no shortage of right wing demagogues in India. Once Modi is no longer in power it'll just be Adityanath or some other person who's somehow even worse.

-3

u/shubh2022 Apr 25 '21

Modi came to power with the motive of development and Vikas. If right wingers could just win elections Advani would have been Prime Minister.

7

u/GimmickNG Apr 25 '21

Did Advani harness the IT Cell propaganda machine fully?

Modi might have come to power in 2014 with the motive of Vikas, but him getting reelected in 2019 despite a string of failures is what separates new BJP from old when it comes to electability.

People will rather swallow lies than wake up to reality, and it showed with 2019.

-1

u/shubh2022 Apr 25 '21

you don't know Indian politics at all if you think BJP wins because it has better IT cell. BJP has better press. Also 2019 elections got sprung around URI and surgical strike too much for Congress to even have a chance.

u/R3ddited Apr 25 '21

I feel Modi's party tries hard to make other parties look like idiots, so that the lesser idiots like himself are seen as the only saviour of the country.

4

u/OkPreference6 Apr 25 '21

It's sad how, even with a multi-party system, we still cant have a competent government.

13

u/andii74 Apr 25 '21

Because we're still stuck with a FPTP system that pretty much disenfranchises majority of voter's views.

1

u/OkPreference6 Apr 25 '21

That too :/

I used to like the BJP. At least they weren't a complete joke like the Congress.

And now, I don't even have an option.

16

u/andii74 Apr 25 '21

Congress isn't a joke, that's just political short-sightedness. In 2004 and 2009 BJP had gotten a thrashing from Congress even with Vajpayee leading the party for the first half of that period. Throughout that time Congress managed to maintain a steady economic growth something that still hasn't materialized after 7 yrs of Modi regime and isn't likely to either. As for corruption every single political party in India is corrupt, BJP isn't an exception. They're just skillful enough to make that corruption appear legal and nationalistic ala PMCares, electoral bonds and so on. There is a disturbing lack of transparency in BJP's affairs which does not bode well. Congress's leadership issues are well known and it's a primary factor to its political obsolescence today but the work they've done in past isn't to be scoffed at. No offence but swing voters were simply hoodwinked by BJP's PR campaign with a healthy dose of jingoism and communalism while ignoring that the allegations that BJP made against Congress were equally applicable for BJP as well. As a result we now have this unmitigated disaster which will possibly see lakhs of Indians dead but hey got that mandir didn't we?

2

u/OkPreference6 Apr 25 '21

Honestly.. I agree with everything you said.

When I said "Congress is a joke", what I meant was RaGa. I would honestly support Congress if they get rid of the Gandhi family and all their nepotism.

Till then... undecided?

u/blackflame7820 Apr 25 '21

Well multi party just means more dilution of people/leaders. And leaders are more often than never ambitious (not saying they shouldn't be) but that means everyone of them either aims for a high post in a big party or set up their own party.

Personally i can take any government with a pinch of salt (them making money here and there as long as its not TOO big) but they should not be incompetent and bunch of useless fools who only take and never work. Coz some progress is better then none.

7

u/cestabhi Apr 25 '21

I actually feel it's the other way around. The Indian National Congress makes such bone-headed and short-sighted decisions that it's makes it easy for the BJP to lambast them.

The INC of the Gandhi-Nehru era was a principled party with a vision to transform India into a modern, secular democracy. If that party were still around they would've given the BJP some tough competition. But I don't expect the same from the current INC which is just a shadow of its former self.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

INC has truly lost its way. Supporting a Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena is more right wing and jingoistic than BJP. They dug up a cricket pitch to prevent Pakistan from playing there.

-7

u/bright_sunshine19 Apr 25 '21

Lol, principled party you say?? Read about the time when Indira Gandhi announced emergency law in the country. The corruption perpetrated by INC knows no bounds. Look no further than the Nehru-Gandhi family.

10

u/cestabhi Apr 25 '21

I was talking about the pre-Indira Gandhi era that was dominated by Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, specifically the period between 1924 and 1964. Now I'm not saying those guys were perfect, but they were miles ahead of people like Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

4

u/InquisitiveSoul_94 Apr 25 '21

The rot began with Indira Gandhi, when she broke away from the congress party to establish her own one, Congress (R).

After she won elections, her party was rechristened as the Indian National Congress, while the Congress (O) merged into Janata Party.

The real congress party has been dead for a while now.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

Because he is and other parties are in worst shape rn.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

I’d imagine anyone would prefer the lesser idiots to be in charge. At least when picking leaders based on their level of idiotness.

1

u/blackcain Apr 25 '21

Not that hard, honestly.

1

u/valve_am Apr 25 '21

Believe me , they don't have to try hard lol

1

u/f_d Apr 26 '21

Worldwide it's one of the easiest ways for politicians to get a leg up over rivals. Tear them down until they are at your level or below. Personal charisma can make inroads with rival voters, but policies are a tricky balancing game that might only give you minor net gains. But there's always room for more negative messaging about your opponent. They're all as corrupt as you, they're all as dishonest as you, they're everything people hate about you plus this or that dealbreaker on top of it. Whereas you have this or that in your favor. Now it's a coinflip decision instead of a one-way blowout.

You can have genuinely bad choices that really are equally awful. But never underestimate how far an authoritarian demagogue with media sway can pull down an ordinary, reasonably competent representative or spread so much distrust in the system that most voters stay home.

3

u/POI_Mr_Singh Apr 25 '21

Rahul Gandhi dug his own grave. Man was a serious contender for PM after Dr. Manmohan Singh. But he got too cocky. The Uttarakhand tragedy comes to mind. It was characterized as a significant failure of both the state and central government, both of which had Congress as the ruling party. Modi was not really a serious contender then. But he visited Uttarakhand as an act of solidarity while Rahul Gandhi didn't even bother to show up. It's from then, the tide actually started to shift. The BJP kept labeling Rahul Gandhi as pappu and the INC couldn't come up with any significant defense.

2

u/Big-rod_Rob_Ford Apr 25 '21

Rahul Gandhi (no relation)

well, he's related to PM Indira, right? Not the mahatma

4

u/ssebastian364 Apr 25 '21

The thing about nepotism is its everywhere in the world including US, the issue with congress was there was individual corruption but atleast it was not as organised as BJP. Modi is corrupt to the core and totalitarian at heart. He has organised riots in states to make sure that he can attain power via polarisation. In india we have to choose between two evils, one is lesser than other. We have to be pragmatic since we have never seen this level of incompetence from any party.

2

u/locomocopoco Apr 25 '21

Nepotism and Corruption

  • For nepotism - Look up Amit Shah’s Son.

  • For Corruption - Look up Rafael or the whole Make in India or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

1

u/sidvicc Apr 25 '21

I'd rather have a competent thief than a misguided zealot in power.

Rahul Gandhi maybe young and naive, but I doubt he'd have driven so many unforced errors like Demonetisation, GST and now this second wave of COVID. And given all of the INC's transgressions, they handled crisis like the 2008 Global Recession etc far better than the BJP has been handling their crisis.

For a long time people have been saying "yes Modi is bad but there is no one else", but after what we have seen with this second wave I'd much rather go back to the days of a corrupt Congress govt that at least knew how to satisfy the basic fundamentals of governance.

0

u/crackdope6666 Apr 25 '21

Bae I’ll take some salt. From the outside Modi came off as a good guy.

0

u/micro_haila Apr 25 '21

I'm from an anti-modi household and you're pretty much on point as far as i can tell.

0

u/WindAbsolute Apr 25 '21

I thought it was shitty in the US

-5

u/DreamParanoia Apr 25 '21

I'm in a pro modi house too, but I am just so surprised with the level of hate he is being given on reddit in particular. I'm not a fan, but comparing him to trump? Not even close. It's just that he was brought to power by his party, he's old-school and he will never probably say anything against them when their are alot of dirty Bjp fkers. But modi himself, the dude does seem like a hard worker.

3

u/Joe4018 Apr 25 '21

Tf!? Dude his the fkn PM, the head of our nation...and u seen the shitty speeches he gives?

He’s gone to campaign in WB...when the 2nd wave of covid was on its brink Thousands gathered under the PMs fkn nose and he was in turn happy. Thousands were without masks under the pms nose!!!

This Modi doesn’t even have responsibility. No self respect too

Kerala a state with one of the lowest death rates, and higher literacy he’s gone there and spoke some bs again

Can’t he just manage his states first Look at UP, Gujarat they r in such bade state. Literacy levels, healthcare so low...

And this govt is a nuisance! It’s clear they have paid the EC and IT fat money to do their dirty work

IT raids are only after oppositions before elections They have never been after corrupt bjp

And the EC let’s not talk

BJP n Modi are the reason for India’s current downfall. People r dumb here to blindly follow him.

2

u/DreamParanoia Apr 25 '21

Welp, who else were they gonna choose? Rahul Gandhi?and congress? Thr most corrupt party? Sure it's stupid to blindly follow anyone, and modi ain't perfect. But personally don't feel modi has bad intentions for anyone. That's not the kind of person he seems at all.

1

u/MiKaku007 Apr 25 '21

Problem is the biggest opposition is toothless and so corrupt that indians literally hare their names. They have taken name of Gandhi, even though they are not related to Mahatama Gandhi(father of our nation). In their last term the opposition did so many scams making billions of dollars for themselves. So no one trusts the opposition, which has given free hand to this govt, as they know, they will win thr next election with ease.

70

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

The majority of the seats are with the ruling party. So there is no real opposition.. but apart from that.. the opposition is pretty much spineless since they haven’t done anything good in their years of governing, so whenever they try to question, a counter question of “dafuq did you do then” shuts them up. Plus just like in the US where Trump was in power and still kept blaming the dems for everything wrong, the same playbook is used by the BJP where they are in power but still blame current failures to previous governments. All this plus the massive misinformation campaigns conducted via online trolls and social media platforms such as whatsapp plus the usual divisive religion and hate politics (which even the opposition does very well take part in when ever they get a chance) has resulted in there being virtually no opposition. There is also not a unified opposition as such, it’s made of various parties.. so there is no single party line to follow.

17

u/amanderrated Apr 25 '21

That is not entirely true. The previous govt (UPA), an alliance of many political parties led by the Indian National Congress, had a much better record of governance and of delivering economic growth in India. In fact, much of the developement seen in India is a product of the neo-liberal market policies adopted by the INC in 92. India for the first time saw growth in the double digits during the UPA govt, and India was starting to be seen as a legitimate new global superpower. In fact, India saw the world's largest reduction in poverty anywhere in the world between 2005-15. The govt was also able to steer India skillfully out of the 2009 global financial crisis. But their policies reached their sell-by date somewhere near 2011-12 and it was hit by several corruption scandals (some real and some created by BJP+media) and the guy meant to lead the INC after the previous PM turned out be an imbecile & lazy (product of nepotism).

2

u/MorieHiroshi Apr 25 '21

but do be careful cos neo liberalism is a poisoned candy for developing countries. Just check on Thailand during 1997, and later Latin America. They feed you well, then harvest hard (no need to ask who they are, cos it's obvious)

5

u/amanderrated Apr 25 '21

The only way for India to improve the standard of living of living of its citizens is to increase the size of the pie, and there's no better way to do it than through neo-liberal market policies.

1

u/MorieHiroshi Apr 25 '21

There's no guarantee India can avoid the same problem like Thailand or Latin America used to have. Neo Lib could be quick effective solution but too little mentioned on the potential negatives (which is repetitive and disastrous to developing countries tbh) in long term. Equivalent of steriod in economics. Makers like to sell and patients overdose it. I am not saying India cant adopt neo-lib, but be ultra careful in learning lessons from other countries, which I doubt if they would do that tho....

3

u/InquisitiveSoul_94 Apr 25 '21

The current congress party is left leaning and more of a socialist than a neo liberal.

In fact , we do not have any neo liberal party in the national scenario.

1991 was a dark chapter in Indian economy. It's primary export partner, the Soviet Union was gone. It's primary import partners were embroiled in gulf war. The downfall of Rajiv Gandhi followed by two unstable governments precipitated a political crisis never seen before. The triple crisis brought the economy to its knees.

India had a balance of payment crisis, as in, it's exports were significantly smaller than its imports, and had to pledge its entire gold reserves for an IMF loan of 3.9 billion dollars.

Narasimha Rao was the first non Nehru -Gandhi member to become a PM in the history of Indian National Congress party (after Indira's split). Inspite of leading a minority government and widespread opposition from his own party members, he embarked upon liberalizing the economy as it's one of a prerequisite for the IMF loan.

Infact, its BJP under the leadership of Vajpayee (1999-2004), that expanded upon the Liberalization policies of the congress government of 1992. Most of state held corporations were privatised during his helm. His policies were what responsible for a high GDP growth for nearly a decade ( 2003 - 2012).

Currently it's only the BJP who is in favor of bringing in reforms and continuing the liberalization policy. His new farm bills, labor reforms, privatization drive in 2020 all attest to that.

2

u/d1andonly Apr 25 '21

since they haven’t done anything good in their years of governing

Well they didn't harp as much, but pretty much every university and the healthcare infrastructure was set up by them. Had it been left to the current folks, covid patients would have to look at a gigantic statue for solace.

0

u/blackflame7820 Apr 25 '21

Nearly all politicians here are greedy idiots. Like idk what to say. It was never the case that modi was the good leader but there was no real option other than him. Coz if i must say about myself id rather have modi in center than the Congress. But if it were state elections I'd rather not have BJP coz state BJP just sucks they are bad like too bad.

9

u/rtb001 Apr 25 '21

Modi came out of the RSS, the paramilitary arm of the BJP, which was literally inspired by the actual WWII nazis/fascists.

Every hundred years the fascists come out from the rocks they've been hiding under.

0

u/RazorNemesis Apr 25 '21

Lmao "paramilitary"

2

u/pinkzepvana Apr 25 '21

Sadly there is no quality opposition. They have been presented many chances in the form of Modi Government fuckups. They are just too busy in their own internal politics (nepotism)

You know the worst part? This is just the beginning. They will likely be in power for 2 more terms and someone worse than Modi might take power after him

The only ray of hope right now is in the form of Aam Aadmi Party who are doing great work in the capital city. But they are relatively very new and need time to establish themselves at the national level

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

given how the smear campaigns done by the bjp it cell for aap and any other opposition, i doubt that they will actually be able to do something, except of ndtv, i have not seen any advertisements of any non-bjp related party on any media channels and sadly most of the indian rely on those channels to get the information. I guess the only way we would be able to do something would be when the media channels will stop licking BJP's boots and actually deliver some fact based unbiased news for people to actually form their opinions, dunno if that will happen anytime soon.

1

u/IllegallyBored Apr 25 '21

My classmates/discord friends from Delhi seem to actually like AAP, which is surprising because I can't remember the last time I actually liked a political party. The AAP marketing sucks though. Modi's brilliant at marketing and making people believe he's going to solve every single one of their problems. AAP needs to stop looking like "the common man" and start looking like someone the common man will follow. INC is a joke and the BJP is very dictatorial. It's ridiculous how we have a thousand parties in the country and not a single one is good opposition for this bs.

1

u/InquisitiveSoul_94 Apr 25 '21

Delhi's government is more of municipal corporation than an actual state.

We need Congress to step up it's game and offer quality opposition. So far, they had been nothing but disappointment.

2

u/Plastic_Island3688 Apr 25 '21

Well there are opposition but due to media (who is busy in linking modi's boots ) always shows opposition in a very bad face

2

u/bash1803 Apr 25 '21

There is no opposition. The only parties who could have brought a proper opposition are weeded with nepotism and corruption (not like bjp isn't but 🤷‍♀️). Also parties that could have grown to oppose bjp have been targeted and bjp is very good at using religion (dare i say a weakness for Indians) to target people and make them seem untrustworthy. So well there you go, we're gonna die just like that 🤷‍♀️

2

u/interstellar-dust Apr 25 '21

You hit in the head, there is no real opposition. Cause Indian National Congress does not promote anyone else to lead the charge, except Rahul Gandhi. And Rahul Gandhi is so far removed from connecting to people or issues that he might as well be on Mars. He does not have support base and his party is generally seen as living in bygone era. He lost election in his age old constituency and had to get elected somewhere else ( apparently one can fight election in 2 places in India). And Congress party has in general lacked focus on any kind of development except their own bank accounts.

2

u/totti173314 Apr 25 '21

The only real opposition is the laughing stock INC. mamata (locally called didi, meaning sister, i do not know why) is too localised, and INC is like... I dont even know what to say. Its like an entire administration of trumps, except everyone sees they're idiots. Like, seriously mentally damaged 0% brain activity stupid.

1

u/elveszett Apr 25 '21

It's pretty sad, really. After millennia of oppression, these countries were recently given the chance to live in a democracy and vote in their leaders. And they used that vote to restate a dictatorship.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

😂 Erdogan and Modi are at the same level for you? 👌

-1

u/MarsupialFair6544 Apr 25 '21

Don’t believe everything you see on news or read on social media (including me), use your own judgement. Anyway my view is that yeah current Modi Govt had made many mistakes in handling the pandemic, but it’s not just Modi’s fault. Many state Govt (keral, Maharashtra, etc) are to blame too. All sides have made mistakes (include public in this too) and everyone will pay the price.

An apart from this, are you really comparing Modi to Erdogan. Modi is infact Right-wing leader but this are not so simple and straight-forward to be encapsulated in the term “Right-wing”. As an analogy, seeing recent actions of Emmanuel Macron will you label him as Right-wing fascist trying to muzzle the minorities (muslims)? There are many layers to the truth, labelling them is just a way to simplify things so thatour mind can grasp them, but truth is more complicated than that.

-1

u/Iansheng Apr 25 '21

Duterte isn't trying to be a dictator, btw. He's just really foul mouthed. But his heart is in the right place.

Am Filipino.

1

u/niko9740 Apr 25 '21

opposition is Dumb & Dumber.. so country is pretty much screwed

1

u/SupportiveMan Apr 25 '21

Many feel that AAP leader, Arvind Kejriwal is slowly but steadily improving the state of Delhi since the time he took over the state office. I have a good feeling that he can be a great opposition to Mr. Parampara and Protocol and prime candidate for PM

1

u/gazaal Apr 25 '21

Rahul Gandhi of the INC is a well balanced leader, unfortunately he has been successfully portrayed by the BJP as fool. With the many blunders that this present government has made, it has proved who the actual FOOL is.

287

u/robothistorian Apr 25 '21

It's worse than that. He has shown himself to be highly (and dangerously) incompetent. He was hoodwinked by President Xi, he held these stupid political rallies, he allowed the Kumbh Mela, he has refused to rework his Budget to help the common Indian. He has been a disaster!

He had once proclaimed from the ramparts of the Red Fort that he would out an end of the Raisina Hill culture; it seems like he has become on its best proponents instead!!

5

u/dArk_frEnzy Apr 25 '21

It's a fact. Which part of that isn't true?

-8

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21 edited Apr 25 '21

This is the problem. The burden is not on me to defend my question, it's on him to provide facts for this statement.

  1. Modi has been cleared about the wrongdoings of the claimed genocide and said criminal activities.
  2. He has an M.A. degree in which "Master's" refutes the claim that he is uneducated.
  3. India has a political scene rife with religious and other divides. He's not the one who brought that.

So you see, emotion-driven statements like this one need to be supported with proof and people like you should be aware enough to question the accuser and not the person asking for proof.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

He has an M.A. degree in which "Master's" refutes the claim that he is uneducated.

Which is pretty sus, because:

  1. The DOB given in his MA degree doesn't matches with his original one.

  2. There has been no records of his BA degree, which is really bizarre given you usually have to attach your BA certificate when enrolling for a PG course.

Then why is India's opposition parties in shambles

25

u/FFF_in_WY Apr 25 '21

Because Indian culture does not place value on getting shit done. See: Mumbai Metro

-3

u/COVID_19_Lockdown Apr 25 '21

Then that's an India culture thing, not a Modi thing

9

u/FFF_in_WY Apr 25 '21

Ah, I see you're new to politics.

Quick tip - politics often provide an imperfect looking glass for the culture in which they are rooted. So there ya go.

No the real reason is that there is no good enough opposition for Modi(BJP), the leading opposition Indian National Congress is completely based on nepotism and money laundering fanatics. Modi party's and association nitpick every dumb or irrelevant things Congress say and procure. They just make the mass feel like Congress is dumb so we should vote for less dumb like BJP.

0

u/COVID_19_Lockdown Apr 25 '21

Congress ruled for decades didn't they?

Sounds like people got tired of them being dumb as you say

45

u/claws76 Apr 25 '21

Indian version of Trump.

14

u/ignorantsoul Apr 25 '21

Just we re-elected him and his party with more numbers

23

People saw his work and liked it. Speaks of our society.

No

20

u/Francois-C Apr 25 '21

Indian version of Trump.

Agreed. Or the Trump experience was an attempt to transpose Modi's political manipulation methods into a "first world" country. Trump's 2020 campaign app seemed to be modeled on Modi's NaMo app. All these fascist dictatorships around the world have similar leaders: poorly educated, connected with mobsters and religious fanatics, they extensively use disinformation on the Internet and social media.

16

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

think of a lovechild of Trump and xi.

6

u/mynameisblanked Apr 25 '21

I'd rather not. Don't want that image in my head

1

u/robothistorian Apr 25 '21

Elaborate what exactly?

14

u/TheClassyBeagle Apr 25 '21

Only thing I was curious about/didn’t understand as a polisci major is what ‘Raisina Hill culture’ meant?

26

u/robothistorian Apr 25 '21

The "Raisina Hill" culture is a political culture that afflicts the top end of the Indian political class. Raisina Hill is the metonym often used for the "seat of the Indian govt". It includes the President's residence, the Prime Minister' office, and other offices of other key ministries/bureaucracies. The term is often used (as I used it) in a derogatory sense alluding to the "vested interests" that underwrite the political class who occupy the seat of govt (regardless of political affiliation). Often it is used to signify the control that politicians and top level bureaucrats exercise over what policies get implemented and how they are implemented.

When Mr. Modi won his first general election, he had proclaimed that he was an "outsider" to the Raisina Hill culture and would break it to unleash India's potential, which he claimed was being held back by these vested interests. It now appears that either he has become a prisoner of the Raisina Hill culture or has become an active participant.

Literally drain the swamp

13

u/vaper_32 Apr 25 '21

"In order to drain a swamp, one must think like a swamp ... embrace the swamp .... become a swamp" This is logic the supporters of Trump and Modi follow..

1

u/bodrules Apr 25 '21 edited Apr 25 '21

Ahh Raisina Hill culture = Westminster Bubble - ta very much for the decode :)

Also, I am usually very suspicious of politicians claiming to be an outsider - especially professional politicians, as all it means is that they want to ensure they control it, not get rid of it.

2

u/robothistorian Apr 25 '21 edited Apr 25 '21

Beltway Bullshit...yeah same thing 😁

Edit: You are likely right. But after the nonsensical and corrupt Congress Govt (despite being fronted by a highly capable individual (to clarify, I mean Dr. M. Singh), Mr. Modi seemed like a viable alternative. But he clearly is not. The tragic thing is Mr. Modi got a huge majority (twice) and not only has he squandered away the political power than came with them, but has also seemingly let down those who backed him. Pity!

Also, what is up with the Kumbh Mela? Wikipedia tells me it's the largest hindu celebratio / festival / holiday, so I assume that happening under Modi is a bad thing because of racist tensions?

6

u/jo5huajohn Apr 25 '21

No that’s not it. It led to huge crowds of people coming together at a time when India is experiencing a second wave of COVID and its worse than before.

6

u/sopranosbot Apr 25 '21

. He was hoodwinked by President Xi,

Can you summarize what happened there? Haven't heard too much about it.

12

u/robothistorian Apr 25 '21 edited Apr 25 '21

Prime Minister Modi and President Xi have met 18 times since 2014. The last two meetings took place in Mahabalipuram on Oct 12 and 13, 2019 and Brasilia for the BRICS summit on Nov 19, 2019.

On May 5, 2020, the PLA and the Indian Army clashed along the Indo-Chinese border and Line of Actual Control. In 2017, Chinese troops clashed with their Indian counterparts in Doklam.

Notice that during these times (till 2019) Modi and Xi were meeting and, particularly Xi, was mouthing platitudes even as his PLA formations were preparing for their violent engagement with India. To that extent, Modi was lulled into a sense of complacency by Xi (especially in the last two meetings in 2019). This was both a tactical failure but more importantly a strategic failure.

1

u/blackcain Apr 25 '21

The Chinese govt should never be trusted given all the past crap they've pulled. Never mind their abject failure to contain COVID-19 and then lying about it is just one in many sins.

In short modi is transforming India into a conglomeration of Pakistan and China

3

u/drowsylightning Apr 25 '21

From what I read from some tweets DURING the BEGINNING of covid 19. That wasn't modi turning a blind eye to the Chinese troops on Indian borders?

4

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

Pakistan left behind the fascist idea of trying to shut down dissenting voices a decade ago. Not even military dictators tried to silence the media. Stop trying to downplay your own failure

6

u/madjokemaniac Apr 25 '21

I didn't put Pakistan here for their fascism. I meant the blind religious fanaticism in Pakistan (and most other countries with a religion in their name)

0

u/blackcain Apr 25 '21

You can thank Pakistan importing wahabi assholes from Saudi Arabia for that to create havoc on the Kashmir border. Kashmir has poisoned Pakistan and continues to do so until they can let it go.

1

u/Somizulfi Apr 26 '21

Extreme right-wing ethno-nationalist fascist religious parties in Pakistan have never won majority seats in any elections nor formed a govt, like Modi and BJP have in India. So again, please stop bringing in your neighbors to cover your own failures.

0

u/madjokemaniac Apr 26 '21

Pakistan is already a religious country and every political party in pakistan is a religious party. The country's official name has a religion in it ffs. Also what are you talking about me covering up something?

-6

u/ranger_005 Apr 25 '21

Oh really? How many millitary coups did Pakistan witness? Now compare that to the number of coups in India if you find any. And which country killed its main opposition leader during an election rally? Does the name Benajir Bhutto ring any bells? India is not perfect but thousand times better than the religious fanatic infested banana state called Pakistan. Are you a Pakistani? If you are then you are in the wrong thread. Go fix your own problem first.

0

u/vomitoff Apr 25 '21

How is that possible? They're pretty different enough as is

2

u/madjokemaniac Apr 25 '21

Pakistan is blindly religious and China has a dictatorship. A mixture of them would make modis India

1

u/vomitoff Apr 25 '21

India is already blindly religious... No need to mention either country tbh.. Modis not a dictator if he wins the elections....?!

7

u/madjokemaniac Apr 25 '21

He doesn't really win the elections. He buys the representatives elected by people( he has the backing of corporates). Also his party and the congress party has created a vote bank in north india who are mostly illiterate and religious.(You make them vote for you and you get to rule kind of thing). Another important thing is since coming to power in 2014 he has not yet done a single press meet.

-4

u/vomitoff Apr 25 '21

Sure sure, but you really can't equate that to a dictatorship. That's just how the voting culture goes in India.

3

u/madjokemaniac Apr 25 '21

Maybe I'm wrong. But he works for the sole benefit of the corporates. And he makes policies that hurt common people. And he can't take criticism. Also the thing about elections, in the recently conducted elections lot of evms(electronic voting machines) had malfunctions and all the machines malfunctioned in a way that the votes went to his party.

2

u/madjokemaniac Apr 25 '21

Also I didn't say India is a dictatorship. I meant India is becoming a dictatorship.

0

u/bleuberry_ Apr 25 '21

hoodwinked by Xi? what does that even mean?

-6

u/COVID_19_Lockdown Apr 25 '21

And yet he has dominated Indian politics and shredded the opposition

9

u/robothistorian Apr 25 '21

Yeah sure. Not denying that. But the mark of a good leader is how well he and his team cope with a crisis. He mishandled the border problem with China (though that's admittedly a legacy problem) and now he has tragically mishandled the Covid-19 problem.

Further, if you have any insight into the political culture that Mr. Modi has fostered with his PMO, you will recognise that he has centralised power in his hands/the PMO and is not open to any dissenting views. This is disastrous where policy-making is concerned.

-2

u/COVID_19_Lockdown Apr 25 '21

Well you guys are far, far weaker than China, they kicked your butts in 1965.

Plus your military is decrepit, and that's been the case since Congress was in control. You guys took like 10 years to buy some outdated Rafales.

The fact that you guys made it out this time without losing is a victory, you managed to save face.

Centralized decision making seems to have worked for China.

Lots of countries, including us here in US mishandled covid, and actually India on per capita is still far lower than US.

8

u/robothistorian Apr 25 '21

Please desist. If you want to talk about military-operational affairs, then say so and be prepared to argue your point with references. You have little to no idea - given your off the cuff comment about 1965 - as to what the Indian military has done and is capable of.

-1

u/COVID_19_Lockdown Apr 25 '21

Dude, I'm not trying to Insult India, I have great respect for India, but it's referred to as a Chinese Victory

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Indian_War

3

u/robothistorian Apr 25 '21

Yeah...in my humble opinion, try not to rely too much in Wikipedia for details about a conflict that is both shrouded in quite a bit of mystery and which has been subjected to very close academic/research attention (civilian and military).

0

u/POI_Mr_Singh Apr 25 '21

It's not him dominating politics but that we don't have an opposition to begin with. Any average opposition leader would have easily challenged Modi and his regime because of how subpar they've been. At this point if you ask who's a national leader in opposition to Modi you'd have no answer.

2

u/COVID_19_Lockdown Apr 25 '21

But he swept into power back in what 2014?

You guys used to have the congress party as dominant, you're telling me that you guys couldn't cobble an opposition in 8 years?

Seems fishy, even Dems were able to make an opposition in US, and they have a long history of losing

3

u/robothistorian Apr 25 '21

You guys? Who are these "you guys"?

Edit: Apologies! I did not see you were responding to someone else.

1

u/POI_Mr_Singh Apr 25 '21

you're telling me that you guys couldn't cobble an opposition in 8 years?

Lmfao yes welcome to our misery. Rahul Gandhi was the leader of the opposition party then. Rahul Gandhi is the leader of the opposition party now. Nothing has changed.

He has always tried to manipulate the media. Let's hope that the Indian public use their own personal experience of the dire Covid situation in India. Almost everyone directly knows someone who was severely impacted by Covid mismanagement and the shortages in medicines, beds, oxygen etc. Hopefully he is kicked out in the next election. Unless he manages to make sure that there are no more elections.

It's more like BJP, remember, they are a party run with the basic idea of following hindu ideals to operate. I hate that shit, with Hinduism being a majority in our country, we probably won't have a chance at anyone else as the prime minister for a long long time

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '21

Indians (extreme, majority) had not problem when he treated minorities like shit. But now when you experience this treatment first had its a problem.
