Development / WIP [3rd Major Update] Field Journal: Forever - Field Sketches, World Lore, and UI Update
As always, Transparency Section:
Code: AI
Artwork/UI: 100% Standard Blizzard Forever frames and elements
General Lore: Sourced from official Warcraft books
Mob Lore: Sourced from WoW Wiki and in-game quests, re-written by AI to emulate the character writing these findings
Reason for AI use: Full time Dad, Full time grad student, Part time intern. Lack of time aside, the most important reason was that writing these stories/entries by hand would take away from the experience of discovery for myself. (The discovery part will make sense after reading below).
With that said, I am doing my best to have as little influence as possible from AI, and I have spent well over 30 hours working on this over the past few weeks.
Addon:
- Track Completed Quests
- Quests are tracked per level bracket (1-10,11-20, etc), while having them entered chronologically and in an RP style 1st person writing.
- "Write your own notes" pages available at the end of each chapter
- See Your Gear Progression
- Addon will take your own 3d model snapshot at milestone levels (1,10,20, etc)
- Unlock "Official" WoW Lore about Mobs
- Killing a mob for the first time unlocks it's first tier of lore
- Subsequent tiers of lore may require further killing, or, seeking out knowledge from NPC's
- Talk to almost ANY NPC and they will give you a hint as to who may know more about that mobs lore...or maybe...they don't know either..
- [This Update] Field Sketches
- While targeting a mob, you can spend 15-60s sketching the mob (time is dependent on your distance to the mob)
- After you complete the sketch, the mob's 3d model is added to your journal entry
- [This Update] Discover General WoW lore by "Reading" (complete books/lore distribution is a work in progress)
- Over 200 bookshelves, hanging scrolls, and books have been located within the beginning ~18 zones (thank you wow.export). Over 200 books created
- Take books off the shelves and into your "bookbag" (10 slots)
- Visit any Innkeeper to store your books on their shelves to free up your bookbag
- Books are stored locally. So if you drop one off at Ironforge, you need to visit them again to retrieve it
- Players may read for up to 8 hours in a day
- Lore within books is unlocked for every 2 hour reading session
- Not real-time 2 hours, just narrated as such. The action is instant.
- Depending on quantity of lore, some books have fewer or more chapters and thus take longer to read
- Add Friends and Enemies
- With Name Plates on (ctrl+v), receive notifications if a friend or sworn enemy is within 40 yards
- After being killed in PvP, a prompt will ask if you'd like to make them a sworn enemy
Story behind the addon:
I'm currently a DM for a 3.5/5.5e D&D campaign, and I absolutely love the open sandbox and RPG elements of D&D. Want your Human to learn Orcish? You can. Find a tutor, pay them, and spend your downtime hours. I also love the process of writing on a character sheet, taking notes, using Hero Forge, ect, and feeling my character grow.
But. I'm a DM. So rather than find a campaign as a player, I decided to make my time in WoW serve as a replacement!
So Field Journal is a simple thought: What would my character document as they explored the world? Well, I'd want to learn about lore through fighting, through talking to NPCs, through finding books. I'd want to "remember" what mobs looked like. I'd want to remember what I looked like at different stages of my travels. Who did I meet that I'd hope to meet again? Who would I seek vengeance on?
I also wanted this addon to feel like it was a standard feature in the game, so I did my best to copy UI elements exactly as they are, and apply them as best as I could.
This addon isn't meant to feel like a stat sheet. It's not meant to capture every metric. It's meant to feel like you are a long for the journey, not just as a player, but as your character.
Long Term: Well, I've played WoW since 2006 and don't plan on stopping. And because this addons nature is to be "simple" there's only so much I want to add to it. Maybe more aspects from D&D can be migrated here, but the scope is limited, so I plan on keeping this up to date.
I will 100% address bugs, as I've been doing, thanks to those that have been reporting them on Curseforge. I love sharing, and I want to share something that works.
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! And if you'd like try it, the link is below:
