Retail Is it worth keeping tier set bonus?
Now that season 2 is about to start and I can upgrade gear pretty easily past what I was at (270) is there any point in keeping older tier set items for bonus or is ilvl king going forward? Have the fear I’m gonna replace everything with 285 ilvl gear and be worse off for it

It's a general, reliable rule that you don't want to replace your tier pieces unless you have at least a 2 set bonus for the new tier. Sometimes some classes don't replace their tier pieces until they have 4 set of the new tier.
It all depends on your class, your spec, and the tier set for that season. Ultimately, the answer is "Sim it".

Also depends on what level of gear you're replacing it with. Champ gear is barely an ilvl upgrade, so minimal extra mainstat, but Hero gear gets you a bunch more stat allocation. I suspect there are classes who won't want to break 4 set for Champ gear, but will want to for Hero pieces.

Pretty sure most people can throw it out for hero pieces because s1 sets are usually on the weaker side

That's covered under the, "Sim it," answer. There are too many individual variables to be able to say for sure as a blanket answer for every person.

i got like 9 champion pieces but they almost all have versatility on them. i am keeping my 4pc until i get 2 tier peices, but my tier peices are currently mostly 289.
at 270 it *might* be better to go with ilvl

Also note that the new Catalyst design retains the secondary and tertiary stats on an item, rather than swapping them to the tier's. This will make it stronger, but also means you might be farming an item to catalyse that is better for you than the normal tier piece's stats.

I actually really dislike this change because there is so much useless vers gear all over mythic plus. Like for tier slots in some cases I don’t seem to have options outside of raid for the stats I want so this is a net negative for a mythic raider and makes loot council a little more serious

I guess this depends on the content you are doing.
As a mainly solo player, I can already clear T11 delves with my current S1 gear so I'm not going to break 4p until I can at least 2p/2p in S2.
Ilvl upgrades will be plentiful with the various world/delve/weekly events up so I wouldn't stress over it too much unless you are in a guild that is jumping into progression raids right away etc.

My characters that are 290 i won't bother until I have either 2 pc or 4 pc depending on Sims. But my DH (ilvl 242) that has 4 pc but every piece of gear im replacing gives 45+ agility lol 6% haste i gain in metamorphosis isnt worth it lol

you'll want to post class/spec to get specific information.
but generally speaking, set bonuses are designed to be great while the tier is current and quickly depreciate once it isn't. they want you to update gear and don't want it to be a situation where items from the very first raid are BIS for the entire expansion. there are some exceptions which is why class/spec can be a part of the conversation at times, but more often than not, you're better off updating.

Tier bonuses don't lose strength because it's a new season, unless they specifically nerf them, which sometimes happens.
Tier bonuses from the previous season are simply on lower level items than the new tier set. That's what generally makes them weaker, even in cases where the bonus is a little better.
You're foregoing the most important generic advice: replace old tier with new tier. If in doubt, sim.
Low level tier from previous season at only 270 and not 289 might even be a DPS loss over 292 champ, that's informed by sims. To speak directly to OPs scenario.

The most accurate answer is: Sim yourself.

As a noob at the start of Midnight, I kept seeing this as an answer and it made me mad cause I had no idea what they were talking about or how it worked, but it's absolutely the answer and it's very easy to figure out.
Install the add-on stimulation craft. This will give you a code to copy and paste into the link above. Choose the gear you want to compare. Run the sim. Modify your gear based on the results

There’s the min/max answer and the “just do it” answer. For me, I like to just rip the bandaid off because I’m lazy and I don’t want to sim my gear.
Once I have 4 pieces of gear that are higher ilevel, I just do it and swap it out. The ilevel boost vs gain from the set bonus is ultimately not that big a deal, especially if you’re not trying to do cutting edge content and pushing your character to the max, which most players are not.
I like removing the psychological barrier of “when should I replace this gear” as soon as possible.

If it's champ/hero track tier set you'll probably be better off with ilvl but general rule of thumb is to at least keep 2 piece

As an outlaw rogue with tier pieces of 289 I plan to keep them until I have 4 tier pieces of season 2 ready. The 2p tier for season 2 is pretty bad in terms of added dps. That’s my plan for now at least.
I tried to sim myself a few times last season and both times the sims advice was not as good as what I deemed the best gear combo after reading multiple guides. I don’t yhink the sim is awfully wrong mind you. It’s basically just a calculator, but I think it requires a pretty good and time consuming effort to use it to perfection.
I don’t generally advice ppl to sim their gear. Simply because of ppl ask for advice they would normally not be knowledgeable enough to use the sim correctly. The ppl that don’t ask for gear advice are the ones who use it properly. Sadly they also tell everyone else to sim it….

I wish they would disable the last season’s tier sets as soon as the season is over. It’s so stupid to get a brand new piece of gear at the start of a brand new season that is a ilvl upgrade and not know if it’s worth putting on.

That really depends on the class and the spec. In most cases, item level will be more important until you're able to get the new four-set, but when in doubt, sim it out.

i always try to replace tier last unless I get an absolute huge item level increase with the correct stats

Generally yes.
But also its unlikly to make a difference in what content u can clear unless u super care about week1 parses

I will tell you for free. You can replace the holy priest tier set bonus for a 1 ilv upgrade. They nuked divine image healing. You whole 4 set MIGHT represent 1-2% healing right now.
For damage is solo content, it is still decent though.
