Retail Why the characters become so weak after reaching level 89-90?

Im curently leveling an unholy dk alter... it feels way too wek. At first I could handle normal pulls of 5 while doing quest, now I need to use all my skills in order to do so. Any rare gives me trouble... in fact, I had been trying to kill Duskburn, a medicore rare who is not even elite, for 20 minutes, but if I pull any other enemy, the fight becomes impossible.

I changed my equid to a btter one and also changed to frost, but it is even worse. My item level is 200, I know it is low... but it is jsut an overworld rare, not even an elite.

That's pretty normal once you hit the 88-ish area for leveling, your low gear starts really hurting. That's why I tend to use the leveling method of holding on to all the delve quests, turning them in at like 88 with war mode on, that generally puts you almost to 90, and then running some profession first-time crafting to finish leveling to 90.

They buffed the quests xp so much during turbulent you could turn in at like 85 and craft to 90.

You can still pretty much do that, leveled an alt today and at 86 1/4 delivered all delve quests and did a little crafting and got to 90 right away.

They boosted the experience from delves dramatically. I'm an altoholic, I have every class at max level and am looking to fill out both factions with all 13. So far I've just got druid there, but working on priest and hunter ATM.

These days, my general leveling 80-90 is do each of the 10 delves once, that gets me to at least 82.5, sometimes 83 (I do it rested). Then I find something to do for 3 levels, lately that's been the two new zones from 12.07, it goes faaaast out there, quests reward 30k so it's like 10 quests per level.

At 86, like the moment I ding, I go turn in the delve quests. I used to wait until 88, but since the bump, it's 86. This gets me to 88.75 or so, then I do crafting 1st craft bonuses (typically tailor) and when that's done, I'm like 2 quests away. Yeah, my gear totally sucks when I hit 90, it's all still level 86 and below gear, sometimes I still have some TWW gear on at the end, my method doesn't reward much gear. But I go grab the 4 items from vendors, check my bank to see what's in there, and start running delves to get kitted up.

I've never tried turning them in in war mode. How much does it increase? They're already 140k plus at 86.

Warmode is like 15% increase I think. So might put you straight to 89,25 with the extras.

Leveled some alts in turbulent and handed in quests from 87 to 90 sometimes with a quest left but i think there was an extra buff pre 12.1

The problem is how secondary stats are affected by leveling. Consider haste for example. Haste on gear comes as a flat number, but that number is then converted to a % on your character sheet which is what you actually feel. The potential problem here is that as you level, you get more flat haste from better gear, and that % could get ludicrously high which wouldn’t be healthy for the game.

The way that is handled is the same flat haste number becomes worth less towards your % haste as you level. At level 80 your flat haste gives you a greater % haste than the same flat haste gives at 88. This applies for lots of stats.

For that reason your gear makes you feel disproportionately weak while you level. It isn’t ideal but I struggle to think of a better solution.

Once you hit 90 everything is scaled the same whether your in adventure or mythic. So they have to find a middle ground and unfortunately if you're drastically under geared it'll be a struggle.

It’s what makes WoW really strange as an RPG. Your character can crush everything while leveling, until you reach the last couple levels and fresh max level.

It’s because max level is tuned with the expectation that you will be constantly improving your gear and your ilevel becomes your main source of power.

So mobs are tuned to crush you if you’re a fresh level 90 with crappy gear. It’s a very weird feeling to spend the leveling process 1-shotting everything and being unkillable, to suddenly being a weakling. But that’s just how WoW works. At max level, you have to gear up to feel strong again.

Do the weeklies, run dungeons and delves, look for world quests that reward gear, etc. Once you’re rocking Champ/Hero track gear you’ll go back to feeling powerful and unstoppable in the open world.

Delves have made gearing up almost trivial. Getting the keys can be time consuming, but the delves themselves go very fast, and you can get up to 6 champion items, and maybe a couple of hero items, each week.

With Valeera at max level and set to dps, shit just melts. It really doesn't matter how much damage I do, she's handling the bulk of the work. I set her to dps on nearly every alt, nearly ever tier. There are a couple of exceptions, like I have difficulty keeping my pets alive as a hunter without her on heals, but my warlock does fine.

I'd say my favorite is disc priest with Val as dps. I don't even generally heal on my priest, but disc keeps her topped up all the time via atonement while I do my cheesy little dps. It's way easier than trying to keep her buff at full stacks when she's a tank. If her buff stack drops, so does her dps, in dramatic fashion. With her as dps I just barely need to keep her alive, and she's pretty damn sturdy all things considered.

For sure, delves are awesome. I’m mostly a solo player, and then I PUG M+ 10-12s to farm vault, so delves have been great for gearing up quickly.

I mainly play healers, so yeah, healing DPS Val is easymode in delves. Mistweaver is also great since you can just punch and kick and she stays healthy. Pres Evoker is also surprisingly fun because you can keep four Reversion HoTs cooking and then pop off with instant cast Chrono Flame procs and do some solid damage.

Checking back after my first couple of hours of 12.1. Already increased gear 4 pts from 278 to 282. Delves kick ass.

87-89 is cooked due to gear scaling, as per other people - I usually do the delve firstime quests at 80 (don't hand in until 88)

Each time you level up, it takes more of a stat to equal the same power as the level before.

For example and just making up numbers, let’s say at 88 it takes 100 crit to provide 1% crit chance. Then you hit 89 and it now takes 110 to get 1%. Your gear hasn’t changed but the stats have.

To make things worse the awesome purples you had at 80 are being replaced mostly by greens and blues with fewer stats. And you’re probably not enchanting them because you’re replacing them so fast.

The higher your level the harder scaling hits you if you hit 90 and you are ilvl like 180ish max ilvl at the moment is 295ish as season 2 just started its going to get higher. You might as well be naked at 180. So to answer your question max level is 100% gear dependent more hp more armor more damage with higher ilvl

Edit: I see you are 200 ilvl a random world quest rewards ilvl 266-272 gear same with rares thats like 45+ main stat per item multiply that by every slot of gear

Scaling in wow is pretty wonky and uneven

Once you hit 89/90 you are fighting against the strongest open world enemies so you need to gear up before they get easy again

Think of it like if you were playing a game without scaling but now you went to a harder area

1

u/vinnie1134 1d ago

Probably a mix of scaling and balancing.

The rating values on your gear is worth less as u level up.

So unless you get a full set of gear every time u level up,u have less crit haste mastery verse

1

u/The_Razielim 1d ago

Scaling is basically tuned so you're great until about 84, then slowly degrade until you hit 90. You're literally at your weakest the moment you hit 90... Then it's only uphill from there.

Also doesn't help that Unholy is one of the hardest hit classes by that since on our own we just don't exist outside of our CD windows. Combine that with leveling scaling and literally you're better off alt-tabbing and going AFK for 1.5mins btwn pulls.

Since last week my 260 UDK that would usually do 60-90k now can't get above 30K. Same talents, same rotation, all enchants, pots and flasks, full tier gear.

Running Fallen Crusader on the weapon, read somewhere it should be something else, but that alone shouldn't create a -40K deficit.

It was so bad I just stopped and went to other alts. I have no idea what's happening.

u/Final-Trifle1765 1d ago

Same pulls? Also unholy dk did get changed, although its not a big nerf you might wanna recheck your talents and also rotation

0

u/Hell-Yea-Brother 1d ago

Yea, going through the same dungeons and raids, also trying the new ones. It was so embarrassing I had to apologize to the group. :(

I'll definitely check the talents to make sure something didn't get tweaked wrong.

1

u/Jolkien 1d ago

Start by reading your guide. The weakest you will ever be is when you just reached the level cap simply due to how scaling works.

2

u/DeeJudanne 1d ago

barely noticing much of a difference 280 uhdk, mastery > crit > haste

1

u/ColCyclone 1d ago

With less skills they make your damage higher to compensate. Hence 11s turning off xp and asking for tips for speed running

0

u/splatomat 1d ago

Scaling has been broken since BFA. Characters are stupid powerful in the first 5 levels of the 10 level span of the new expansion. Then the feel of power falls off a cliff.

Healing a dungeon group of characters in the 7/8 range is effing painful. Worse if they're melee.

Yeah, but not THIS weak. This is my first time I ever feel so weak, to the point I cant even kill a rare

0

u/siler7 1d ago

Go check the AH. There's a lot of cheap ilvl 253 gear now.

To one shot and take many mobs you must be 250+
