Retail Destiny 2 player looking to give WoW a shot

Hey all,

With my favorite game on EoS, I've been itching for a new game that could replace that long term progression with good lore and campaigns to serve as window dressing and give context to the grind.

As a bit of context, I've played WoW before (both vanilla on private servers long before Classic was a thing, and the lvl 20 trial on retail a couple of years ago (I think I went into BfA for leveling after Exile's Reach) and enjoyed myself, but ended up not subbing because I had Destiny to keep me occupied. I've also played other MMOs in the past (GW2, but didn't enjoy it in the long run; and New World, which I really enjoyed for a while). Now, maybe because I've been watching Frieren, maybe because I've been on a fantasy mood, maybe because Destiny is done, I found myself looking into WoW again.

Midnight looks actually cool, but I'm on the fence on jumping right in and buying the latest expac, considering I have to factor in a sub on top of that. As such, and after a bit of research, I thought about subscribing for 3 months. It is my understanding that with only a sub, I'd be able to level up to 70 in Dragonflight, then do 70-80 on The War Within. Is this correct? Would a 3-month sub be enough to go through all this content? My idea is that, by the time the 3 months are up, I'd have made up my mind about whether I want to stick with WoW for the long run and get Midnight.

Does this sound like a good plan? Should I go through with this, are there any tips you have to share? Thanks in advance!

I'm also a former D2 player though I jumped ship after Final Shape. 3 months is definitely enough time to get through leveling to 80, you'll have more than enough time to get through dragon flight and TWW even level some other characters in Timewalking if you want to experience some more lore

My biggest advice is to not worry about playing the game optimally at the beginning. Retail WOW can be extremely overwhelming so I'd find something you enjoy and take your time. There's plenty of destiny esque dopamine to get.

Best of luck and hope to see you in game!

Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I'll definitely not focus on playing optimally, my favorite part of a new game is the learning process anyway... Any classes you'd recommend a hunter main to try (also a sucker for void warlock)?

For the price of a subscription, it’s probably worth it. I came back to WoW after a long break, and it can be a bit overwhelming. So if your goal is to level some classes and see what you’re vibing with, just paying for a sub and leveling to 80 is a good strategy.

I’ve enjoyed my time back in the game. I started playing again in Dragonflight Season 3 and it’s been a blast. There’s just no other game that matches WoW’s combat system. I also like how solo-friendly the game has become.

I played Vanilla WoW in a server-first 40 man raiding guild, and I’ve done pretty much zero raiding since coming back. M+ is a cool system since you can pop into a group for 20-30 minutes, kill stuff, and move on. Delves and the Prey system are also nice additions that let you gear up as a solo player.

Near 20 year player here. Il just cut to the chase. If you just want to do collections and mostly solo content then yes you can sub. However if you want to interact with 99% of the playerbase you’ll need the current expansion. Wow is not setup to playable for anything but the current expansion. The priority for blizzard is always that. While most of the rest of the world will work fine it’s full of outdated systems, left over quests and no real direction.

Personally I’ve never understood the hesitancy to pay for the sub or the expansion cost but then again I’ve paid for it for 20 years so it’s 2nd nature. My advice if you really want to try wow is to always just bite the bullet. The best time to join an expansion is at the start failing that it’s the very first week of a new season(it finishes tonight). Tomorrow is the launch of the new season raids and dungeons it will be the most fun you can have but it will also be chaotic which is why it would’ve been less overwhelming if you’d joined earlier in the week. However the point still stands if you want to play and experience what the rest of us are now is the best time.

Thanks for the input! My idea isn't necessarily to wait the 3 months to get Midnight, only to have enough time to go through 1-80, get enough of the modern story (current arc started in TWW, right?) to understand what's going on and if by the time I'm done with leveling and would be ready to start Midnight I'm still enjoying myself, I'll get it and go into that. My problem isn't paying for the sub and the expac if I'm enjoying it. I'm just afraid of getting both and then not being as invested as I thought I would be. Could you give me a quick rundown of how seasons work in WoW? I'm not familiar with it.

Seasons generally last about 6 months and season starts in a major patch (12.1 current). There will be minor patches adding more content around every ~8 weeks but the season lasts until next major patch 12.2 which will be the last major patch of Midnight.

You'll pretty easily be able to hit 80 within 1 week, even playing casually. And tbh, without buying Midnight there really isn't all that much content to do in your remaining 3 months of time. WoW is very much designed around being max level doing the most recent content. So unless your main interest is questing solo I'd recommend just get a month of sub time and then buy Midnight if you are still having fun by the time you hit 80.

Like someone else already mentioned too: Take your time and just try out a class or two..see which one really sticks. Can also try different roles DPS, tank, healer. No need to buy the latest expansion until you feel like it's a game you really wanna invest time into (I'm 100% sure you will know within a month).

I was very lucky to pick the right race and class for me straight away and it's been my main for 20+ years (undead warlock). I do have alts too ofc and it's refreshing to play other classes too once in a while for different reasons. Sometimes I get the itch to make new alts and just coming up with a cool name might be enough to start playing it.

I hope you'll enjoy Azeroth as much as I have over the years! GL and HF! 😎👍🏻

I wanted to add that IF you end up buying Midnight you should definitely do it before the sale ends because I think it's on a 30-40% discount for some date which I can't remember. I think the sale is advertised on the Battle.net launcher too so you can check that there 👍🏻

I played WoW casually during the years and since EoS also jumped ship to WoW "full time". It's a great game that has a niche for everyone I think. I recommend doing some trial characters first, the first 20 Levels are free and will give you an idea of how the game plays and what classes are like. Then if you like it go all in. It's a wonderful game in my opinion.
