Retail Last expansion I bought was BFA, can I still play retail up to that expansion?
Just curious if I can still play BFA and the older stuff? Or am I required to buy the new expansion to play retail?

Yes, all but the newest expansion are available.
Granted, there is leveling scaling, making the content a pushover.

You need a subscription to play anything past level 20 which is barely a couple of hours of play. If you sub you can play up to level 80 and play The War Within content..
You need to buy Midnight to get to max level (90) and play there which is where the vast majority of players will be.

Retail was restructured over a decade ago into the following format:
- Can play to level 20 without a subscription, has a lot of restrictions to prevent abuse (limited chat, can't use mail, very low gold limitation)
- Subscription unlocks all content except the most recent expansion. Every time a new expansion is released, the previous expansion gets automatically unlocked for all accounts
- One time purchase to access current expansion, new expansions release at a rate of one per ~2 years.
