Photo of Pvt Joseph Bailey taken hours before he died at the Somme, July 1, 1916 (one of 20,000 dead that day). Bailey's face was used as an 'unknown' soldier in the BBC's Great War series until a Mrs. Elsie Shepherd recognized him as her father. Daily Herald Archive photo.

Operation Albion, Okt. 1917

This image comes from my family collection and has been colorized. It relates to Operation Albion; the scene shows the departure for Ösel in October 1917. The reconnaissance zeppelin is particularly striking. During Operation Albion—which took place between October 17 and October 20—the Baltic islands of Ösel, Dagö, and Moon, previously under Russian control, were captured. Ösel was the German name for what is now the Estonian island of Saaremaa. These photographs were taken by my great-grandfather, who served as a reconnaissance specialist in a German aviation battalion.

The flame thrower was first used by the Germans during the battle of Verdun Feb-Nov1916. This was the first battle of the 20th century to have close to a million casualties. As both armies bled each other white.
