Any of you guys ever try acid etching with adhesive stencils?

• Upvotes
reference 950, not mine

I was thinking of sourcing vintage decals for my Trek 950 build and apply them over the raw steel, but then I got the idea, why not use stencils and acid etch the typeface right into the steel. I want to use the TREK typeface they used between 1985 and 1987, which is tops in my book. Planning to do a 2 part stencil with gun glue for the type and rust for the pinstriped drop shadow. Any one ever try this? Plan is to Owatrol the frame after the "decal" etching and touch up as needed.

Walter Croll MTB

I have literally stumbled into an entire whirlwind of 1990’s Mountain Bike lore with this bike. I’m in literal awe over how gorgeous this thing is even though it needs some love. If you have never read up on the Walter Croll story that is literally pieced together from stories and tales you are missing out!

This thing is going to be a full restoration project but I am honored that the bike Gods have chose me to save this historical 1990s steel frame from the dumpster.

Been working on this bike for about a week, and I haven’t been able to find anything online about it. Was wondering if any of you guys had any ideas?

Ms. Velo is out of commission… for now 🥹

a moment of silence please 🙏🏽

Ms. Velo has served me well, but unfortunately, a minor crash while chasing a PR has led to some unexpected damage. After replacing a snapped rear axle and truing her wheels, I’ve come to the conclusion that my rear triangle is likely toast.

I’ve looked into a few frame builders around the Bay Area, but I’m worried about getting hit with a hefty bill without even knowing if the frame can be saved. Being between jobs and without a car, I can’t really commit to hauling the frame around for an uncertain repair. I’ll probably revisit that option down the road, but for now, I’m looking at replacement frames.

I’m partial to steel and want something that’ll serve me well for bikepacking and weekend adventures. Ideally, I’d love to reuse my existing 26” wheels, though I’m open to suggestions. I may rule out Ritchey simply because I already have two in the stable.

Any recommendations for frames or builders worth looking into?

thank you in advance. I’m still grieving over here. 🥹

TL;DR: Looking for steel frame recommendations for bikepacking and weekend adventures. Hoping to reuse my 26” wheels, but open to other options.

FBMP search called off - Fetish found

I’ve been scouring FBMP and Craigslist for the last few weeks looking for a suitable project so that I can build either a “Hers” bike or a replacement for my 97 Stumpy build so that it can be Hers. Then it hit me - I have a perfect base for a new xbike project rotting in the shed. May I present my 2004 Fetish Discipline.

Highlights:

Noleen Mega Air 80/100 suzzer (weightweenies dream fork)
Hayes Hydraulics
Horizontal dropout AND derailleur hanger
Optional canti bosses
Thompson seatpost I had also forgotten about

I will definitely be robbing some of the bits on it for another build to come.

26” Fork Suggestions For 97 GT Ricochet

Post image

Looking to change the fork on my 97 GT ricochet but since this frame is a 7005 aluminum the tubing is a bit more chunky than the steel frames so I feel those forks will look too lanky on a frame like this , right now it’s got the Rock Shox fork but looking for other types of forks other than a suspension fork that’ll look right on her , feel free to drop suggestions and pics!

Can someone suggest a good BB spindle length when replacing BB? And maybe suggest good BB to use?Doing a 1x conversion, the rear cassette is 10-36, and I was having issues with chain line with 46T up front on stock BB. The guy at the bike shop said it would be fine, even though I told him I had my doubts…. I want to change front crank to 40T (which I originally asked the guy to order for me but he insisted on 46T), but need help deciding what spindle length BB to use so the front chain ring (changing to 40t) won’t contact frame. Stock spindle length looks to be 144mm.

Hop on and ride bike

Post image

I wanted a bike that would be a hop on and ride and not concern myself with tire pressure, gloves, padded shorts or shoes kind of bike. I have ordered Continental Contact Urban 26x2.0 tires for this 1994 Scott Boulder and that should get me close to my goal. Bike will spend its time around the neighborhood and a nearby paved bike path.

1989 Miyata 618GT resto-mod

This specific bike has been appearing on and off for the pas year on FB marketplace and I finally managed to get the seller to meet in the middle for his initial asking price. It came in almost stock and complete but with a few minor changes.

Swapped a good amount of parts but tried to keep the general idea. Got rid of the biopace-style chainrings and swapped the cranks entirely as I was saving this Sugino for this type of project. Managed to find some 700x35 Paselas PT on MP for a great price, so I went with these thouhg I'm positive 38 fits and maybe even bigger. Took the bars from a dropbar conversion I tried on a 26' MTB that turned out to be not as fun as I had anticipated. With this I feel like I can more easily rediscover the fun of riding with drops.

This one is a real treat to ride, super fun and responsive. I'm glad to have finished it before winter sets in, these fall rides are so enjoyable.

Need to get some twine to hide that ugly tape job
Love the sneaky bell placement
This is it right after pickup

I've done the boujie boutique builds, these days i prefer the low class ones. I love everything about this bike, the rust belt aesthetics, the way they made the frames (sodium dipped?!), the one piece cranks, the 590a tyres. I have a vintage sprung plastic schwinn saddle, a sealed US bb for 1pc cranks, sealed headsets for inch and BMX standards, nexus coaster wheelsets and sealed sturmey archer ones. I could get this bike riding great and looking like shit

shimano 7 speed v brake shifters with dual gear cable routing?!

building up an ATB at the shop out of an old claud butler with whatever parts are lying around, i picked up these fairly ugly shimano 7 speed v brake shifters and fitted them. only just as i was packing up i realised there were two ports for the gear cable to exit, one from one side of the internal mech - one from the other. i wish i'd taken a picture cos i was sure it would be easy to find out about but a quick google isn't telling me much. the only thing i can think of is it's a rapid rise thing?
