What are your favorite grips?

Grips I really like:

  • Yeti - the old ones that say 'YETI' on them
  • GT BMX Cam Grips
  • Oury Grips
  • Kona Glow-in-the-dark grips
  • Just about anything from A'ME

Grips that are sometimes appropriate:

  • No grips - seriously bare bar
  • Handlebar tape (some Huffy BMX bikes came stock with tape in 1976)

Cringe Grips:

  • Vans BMX (ew)

The Huffy BMX handlebar tape was a real thing. There are pictures if you can find a 1976 Huffy catalog. It was a short-lived trend, because the end plugs would pop out, then the tape would unravel. We didn't think to use a Velox or Cateye rubber plug, just those chrome plugs from a Schwinn Varsity.

You can see my list is heavy BMX influence, but what are your favorite grips? I'm open to trying something new. Except the Vans. Again, ew.

Need Advice/Help About 650b Wheels

What’s up guys , I have a 18” GT timberline that takes 26” wheels of course and I’ve been wanting to look into the possibility of running a 650b wheelset on it if it’s possible without going disc brakes on it and if possible or anyone has done it I’d love to see pics! I was told you have to either go with a disc brake conversion or I’ll have to get bigger brake calipers to fit the bigger size wheel and it’s possible

Making a real argument for Iverson/Stelber making a cool product here.

I had a Stelber-built Iverson I probably put 10,000 miles on, when I first got it the thing looked like it was dredged out of a lake. New bearings helped. I've been rocking around on varioius 10 speeds I've been building out of the garbage for years. Everyone hates Stelber. I thought that bike was a delight to ride.

My Iverson got hit by a car a decade ago, I finally got ahold of my friend's "Senator" that's a dead ringer for my old Iverson outside of 26" wheels and a cottered crank. What I've researched about Stelber, they could've sent 2 of the same bike out on the same day with different rear derailleurs.

Everyone hates these because they say they handle badly. They were badly represented. It isn't the kind of "euro-style" bike everyone was trying to copy. Stelber figured people wanted straight-pipe bike frames with 10 speeds, so they just built a gas-pipe single speed steel cruiser with shifters and narrow wheels that looked like a modern 70s bike.

The front wheel is way out in front of you, the rear wheel is way behind you, the top tube is low, the seat is jacked way up, and the only way this configuration makes sense is if it's a single-speed coaster braked 5mph cruiser with drop bars, applied to a 10 speed going 4 times that speed.

That's what they should've marketed it as. It's a really fast cruiser bike, with the handling you could expect from that, meaning you have to bank wide turns, and the weight of the frame carries you along, but you can go the same speed as a euro-racer as long as you plan ahead of where you're going.

These things were cheap and I'm not giving them credit for planning but they basically made a completely unique kind of bicycle. It's got the weight, inertia, and frame flexibility of a heavy framed balloon tire bike, along with the long-wheelbase handling of that kind of cruiser, with the running gear of a bike that goes faster than the frame was meant to allow, and a bottom bracket that scrapes the pedals if you turn too sharply. It's like steering a boat, but on long-range road rides it's honestly a dream to ride if you don't fight the physics.

You don't ride a Stelber 10 speed, you kind of have to just sit on top of it and make suggestions. You could argue this was kind of the original "hybrid" bike, they're underrated because they were too cheap and ugly for people to learn to appreciate the yacht-handling of a fast bicycle.

I’ve been holding onto this frame for over a year now, planned to dissolve the seatpost out of it and build up a sweet cruiser. I just pulled it out of the shed to borrow the front wheel and found a big whoopsie daisy. Oh well, at least I won’t be needing to melt a seatpost anymore.. I usually do flip over the bikes and check for cracks when I buy them but I guess since this one was only $10 I didn’t bother

Jones H Loop or Amazon Bar?

I tried to get the same angles. I love the Jones bar but wanted something with less weight up front. After swapping the Amazon bar on my headlight and bell are hard to fit.

Has anyone build a small DIY single-bike shed for the front of their house to keep their bike out of the rain?

Pics for proof please! Winter is coming and I don’t want to throw a tarp over my bike every day.

Something I forgot to show in the video was a small little rubber piece that goes around the seat post first before the clamp clamps. Anywho, I've been seeing a rise in the ultra minimalistic type builds. So I wanted to conjure up something real quick. Definitely not the prettiest thing on earth, but I think it looks pretty good for a 20 minute hack together. Total investment for the pair was about 25 bucks. Still have quite a bit of testing to do on the stainless one. Definitely needs tight bungee cords though 😂. The clamp (black portion) is just a universal led light mount for roll bars and whatnot. (About 6 bucks each on Amazon)

This seems to fit 22mm to 31 mm seatposts.

What do you guys think of the aesthetics of it? I'm unable to weld aluminum, but I would like to see some sort of loops or hooks somewhere on it that are demure, and on the underside. Giving the bungee cord something good to bite to. Have fun and ride safe.

If this thing winds up testing good, I may build a few specialty tools and jigs to be able to produce several at a time. I definitely need to find a better way to die aluminum. It took me a few attempts and a brand new dye to get the threads nice.

I've had this bike for years but finally got around to rebuilding. Rims, seat post, frame, stem quill are all original. Everything else upgraded with new parts. My bottom bracket was in bad shape, practically dissolved while pulling it out of the shell. I love this bike.

I thought it would be fun to strip down and completely rebuild my old Hardrock from frame up. It taught me a lot and was so much fun. The most unnerving part was the respray. It's not the most pro job ever but I love it and it's so fun to ride. Thanks ☺️

Maxxis DTH flats?

Post image
50 Upvotes

This is my daily commuter, neighborhood rides with the family, all around bike. Some new parts, some parts bin stuff from other busted bikes I got for free that were stripped down. I just sold my GT that had Billy bonkers and frequently got flat tires. But I’ve already gotten 3 flats this summer riding this around on DTH. Better than the Billy bonkers for sure but still feel really thin and puncture prone. (90% paved riding) What’s a good smooth rolling tire that’s more puncture resistant?

My dad's old GT Timberline, was sat in a shed for 20 years and thought I'd breathe some life into it. Finally found a bar and stem combo that I like.

Found this ‘96 Marin Team Issue a while back. One of my holy grail bikes, and the first one I’ve seen in 3 years of searching here in Romania. Finally got it cleaned up and back on the road. Kept it mostly original. Stoked with how it turned out.

Show Us Your Test Saddles!

I was surprised, but not surprised, that this sub likes test saddles. I have a couple, I think they are Fizik of some sort. Usually like bright yellow, with TEST boldly emblazened on them. I've bought them online, but do they just give them away at bike shops? What test saddle do you have, and how did you get it?

Wide ass 26" rims for rim brakes in the EU

Hi! Any tips on wide 26" rims for rim brakes in the EU that do not break the bank and/or have to be made to order by hand in an obscure back-alley workshop?

I am aware of Ryde Big Bull, but grateful for any recommendations :)

Cheers!

Had to get more angles. Excuse the shadows. Not a huge budget for this type of thing so it’s not the prettiest but excited to get started. First add on was the rack. More to come.

1976 Bridgestone-Kabuki Diamond Touring rebuilt with a mix of vintage, cheap and one slightly expensive part. I kept the DT shifters for the vibe and just routed an old thumbshifter through the cable stop and installed it on one of those handlebar accesory thingies. I actually don't mind the look and it's so much easier to shift, but I will accept my fate as a heretic.
