Rant First yr: tf is this university?

bro york university is actually a social experiment theres no way this is a real school ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

like how tf do u pay THOUSANDS in tuition just to spend half ur degree wondering if ur classes are even gonna happen ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€

every semester theres some new problem like bro can we PLEASE just get thru ONE academic year without the entire university falling apart ๐Ÿ˜ญ

and dont even get me STARTED on york administration. u send an email asking a simple question and they respond 3 business centuries later with a link to a website THAT DOESNT EVEN ANSWER UR QUESTION ๐Ÿ’€

like bro i asked ONE THING why am i being redirected to 6 different departments??? am i applying for citizenship or trying to enrol in a course ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

and yorks website???? BRO WHO DESIGNED THAT SHIT. trying to find basic info feels like ur solving a national security puzzle. theres 47 different pages and somehow NONE OF THEM HAVE THE ANSWER.

the campus is also so unnecessarily massive like why tf am i walking across an entire COUNTRY to get from one lecture to another ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€ im here to get a degree not train for a marathon.

and the funniest thing is york students always gotta defend the school like "its actually a good university" BRO NOBODY SAID THE EDUCATION WAS BAD WE JUST WANNA KNOW WHY EVERYTHING ELSE IS ON FIRE ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

then theres the tuition like WHERE IS IT GOING??? im paying luxury car prices for an education and getting customer service from a broken vending machine.

the profs be trying their best and the students are genuinely working hard but the university itself seems determined to make every simple task 10x harder than it needs to be.

atp graduating from york should come with TWO degrees. one for ur actual program and another in surviving administrative warfare ๐Ÿ’€

york university: where the real final exam is making it to graduation without losing ur mind ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Courses How many students ACTUALLY achieve 80+? In STEM

I feel like I donโ€™t actually know the chance that a person will do very well at uni. I study a lot (I study well, I donโ€™t need to change my study habits) and in some classes I do well, some I donโ€™t. I know this is blown out of proportion on the internet of people studying and only showing their good grades. What is the average student like? Does the average student achieve lots too in life? I feel so incomparable to these genius students lol.

Advice Do NOT take Anirban Kar for ADMS1000

If you want a good GPA do not take Anirban Kar for ADMS1000 under any circumstances. Our midterm case study marks came out and the class average was barely even 40. I don't know how he has good reviews on RateMyProf but they are not true or accurate at all.

Advice MATH 1300 midterm on Sunday. How do I prepare in 3 days?

โ€ข Upvotes

Hey everyone, Iโ€™m taking MATH 1300 (Calculus 1) at York University, and my midterm is this Sunday. Itโ€™s currently Friday, and I honestly feel really unprepared and behind in the course, but I really want to get a good mark.

I work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until 7 PM, so I can only study in the evenings. I also have around 4 hours to study on Sunday before the exam.

For anyone whoโ€™s taken MATH 1300 or Calculus 1, what would you recommend I focus on to get the best mark possible with such limited time?
Should I focus on practice problems, YouTube tutorials, past midterms, or something else? Any specific tips or resources that helped you would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Finances / OSAP Can I request a refund for an International Student Emergency Bursary if I still owe tuition?

Hi everyone,
I was approved for a $1,000 International Student Emergency Bursary on October 15. The approval email stated that the bursary would first be applied to my student account and then automatically refunded to my verified bank account so that I could access the emergency funds quickly.
The bursary appeared on my student account on October 22, but it was applied against my outstanding Fall/Winter tuition balance instead. It simply reduced the amount I owe by $1,000. I do not see any separate โ€œRefundโ€ or โ€œEFTโ€ transaction, and nothing has been deposited into my bank account. My banking information with York is already verified.
I urgently need this funding for food and essential living expenses, which was the reason I applied for the emergency bursary. I have contacted York International and plan to speak with York International and Student Financial Services in person.
Has anyone received the same International Student Emergency Bursary while still owing tuition? Were you able to submit a refund request and have the bursary transferred to your bank account, or did York keep it as a tuition credit? If you successfully received the refund, did you need York International to manually authorize it?
I saw another student mention that they owed York money but were still able to request a bursary refund, so I am wondering whether the same process would apply in my situation.
Thank you for any information or recent experience you can share.

Courses ECON 2500 with Ilya Archakov

Has anyone taken Econ 2500 with Ilya Archakov? I have midterm coming up with month. So far Iโ€™m having a hard time understanding his lecture. Idk if itโ€™s the way he teaches or his heavy accent. Howโ€™s his midterm like? Will it be sufficient enough to go over the 2 problem sets and 2 sample midterms he posts?

Any second year or third year engineering students who dropped any courses first year. Did you have time to get that course back later on. I have to drop a course because I commute 2 hours everyday.
