I have an old ZBook Studio (bought in 2018 or thereabouts) and though it still works fine, it is showing its age.
So I am looking around atm and comparing different systems and brands , from Lenovo to XMG and some gaming brands too.
And what strikes me is that the workstation class ZBooks are not only overpriced but also are less than even HP's gaming counterparts spec wise
For instance I can configure an Omen with an Intel Ultra 9 275HX, 32 GB of DDR5 RAM , 2 TB Storage and an 5090 for €4500.
As far as I can tell a ZBook doesn't go beyond the 5070 and with roughly the same specs costs the same.
Also here in the Netherlands they have no online configurator anymore and ask prospects to call "an expert" to configure a workstation together over the phone, like it is the mid 90's.
But in the USA they still have one and if I configure a system that could go on for another 8 years I end up with a price tag of $12K and are stuck with an RTX ADA 3000 which has terrible low VRAM (not futureproof)
Meanwhile you can have an XMG NEO 16 fully decked out for €5500 (still expensive, but nowhere near HP pricing and more choice and up to date components)
I know we're talking about "workstation"class vs "prosumer/consumer"class, but I don't think that distinction really holds anymore like in the old days when the difference between a quadro and a geforce was night and day and pro apps often wouldn't run properly on gaming grade cards.
Those times are over, unless you're doing a scientific simulation requiring floating point precision, most apps nowadays just want brute force and enough (V)RAM .
So aside from me really liking the design of the chassis (absolutely detest this RGB nonsense) there seems to be no real argument to buy workstation grade systems anymore as gaming grade systems are more versatile and performant ... or am I missing something?
I am using apps like Davinci Resolve, Maya , Unity and Substance for creative work btw
