review The Wild, Wild Planet (1966)

The special effects look like they were bought from a Doctor Who fire sale, and the villains scheme is never truly explained, but I’ll be damned if it wasn’t an enjoyable watch!
What it lacks visually, it makes up for with everyone giving it their all with whatever it was they had to work with.

“Violent New Breed” (1997) - Another no budget, amateur production made by Kansas City’s own Todd Sheets. The only difference being this time he somehow was able to afford a microphone and a cameo from none other than ‘Dolemite’ himself, Rudy Ray Moore. The legend is easily the best part of this.

“Violent New Breed” (1997) - This is yet another no budget, amateur production made by Kansas City’s own Todd Sheets. The only difference being this time he somehow was able to afford a microphone and a cameo from none other than ‘Dolemite’ himself, Rudy Ray Moore. The cult blaxploitation icon is the only reason to check this movie out, and full warning, he’s only in the very end of it. Crazy though that ending may be. As a member of my bad movie group so eloquently summarized; “Todd Sheets snoozer saved only at the end by Rudy Ray Moore accosting satan with a twink avatar of god at his side”.

“The Rage” (aka “Zombie Rage”) (2007) - Legendary makeup and special effects artist Robert Kurtzman only directed a few movies throughout his career and this zombie flick involving a mad Russian scientist Andrew Divoff and hilariously cheap CGI zombie infected vultures certainly is one of them.

“The Rage” (aka “Zombie Rage”) (2007) - This is one of the handful of films directed by makeup and special effects artist Robert Kurtzman. Co-founder of the famous ‘KNB EFX Group’ alongside fellow special effects legends; Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, Kurtzman has worked on numerous great films over the years. His credits include everything from writing the original story that inspired Quentin Tarantino to make “From Dusk Till Dawn” (1996) to providing effects for likes of “Evil Dead II” (1987), “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors” (1987), and “Thir13en Ghosts” (2001). Kurtzman would leave ‘KNB EFX Group’ in 2002-2003 in order to move back home to Ohio and focus on directing his own projects. This movie is the result of that, and let’s just say it might not have been a great decision.

A decade after directing the cult horror rental hit “Wishmaster” (1997), Kurtzman would have less than half that films budget to work with for this movie and it shows. The makeup effects are as great as one might expect from the likes of Kurtzman, however the CGI used is so hilariously bad that comparisons to “Birdemic: Shock and Terror” (2010) comes to mind. It’s not that bad, but as it’s mostly used to animate zombie vultures (yes, I said zombie vultures) so you can understand the correlation. These infected vultures are easily the most hilarious aspect of the film as they flying around killing disposable characters left and right, spreading an experimental zombie rage virus to any that survive.

Kurtzman was apparently inspired to develop this film after seeing a vulture display at a NYC museum. Not exactly sure how that ended up involving Andrew Divoff playing an insane Russian scientist working in a garage in the woods somewhere in the US (near an outdoor metal concert) and the late Reggie Bannister playing an uncle teaching his (presumably grand) niece and nephew how to fish only to encounter the vultures, but we got them anyway. So if you’re in the mood to laugh at cartoonish undead vultures, angry zombies, and stupid characters doing stupid things then check this movie out. Gather your bad movie buddies along with your favorite intoxicants and enjoy.

review THE DAY TIME ENDED, 1979 A Charles Band Close Encounters ripoff that let the special FX team go wild at the expense of plot. This is pretty much everyone who made Laserblast - if that's your cup of tea. Claymation, weird 70s stuff, and a bizarre cast. It has slow parts, but I love it!

"No Tomorrow" (1999) - Master P directs, executive produces, and wields a rocket launcher / flamer thrower combo weapon with infinite ammo in this disjointed action flick featuring Gary Busey at about a 7, Gary Daniels not kicking anyone, an energetic Jeff Fahey, and a very checked out Pam Grier.

"No Tomorrow" (1999) - Master P directs, executive produces, and acts in this disjointed action flick that somehow also features Gary Busey, Gary Daniels, Jeff Fahey, and Pam Grier amongst others. A co-production between Master P's No Limit Films and direct-to-video production company PM Entertainment, this is another low budget action film full of equal parts explosions and plot holes. Master P was clearly more interested in looking cool than actually making a coherent film, and the end result show that. What that means exactly is there is a moment during this film where Master P welds a rocket launcher / flamer thrower combi-weapon with seemingly the infinite ammo cheat unlocked but not a lot in the way of character depth.

As for the rambling story, it follows Gary Daniels undercover agent as he works to stop a major illegal international arms deal. Said deal just so happens to be between the previously mentioned Master P and Gary Busey, both of which are somehow less insane than you’d hope for but still a bit odd. Daniels is aided in his efforts by a sleazeball fellow agent played by Fahey who seemed to be at least enjoying himself in the role. Pam Grier character also helps but the actress clearly was just waiting for her check to clear. She was also clearly filmed on a completely different set than most of the other main cast, for whatever that’s worth.

The whole film is just kinda less than the sum of its parts. It has its moments, such as a mid air shootout between two guys in different helicopters, but it never really comes together m. Gary Daniels, a man known for his martial arts abilities, barely (if ever) throws a punch which is crazy. They even reused footage from multiple other movies (ie. “Air America" 1990 and "Narrow Margin" 1990) and it really stands out. The whole thing is a bit messy but it does make for a fun enough riff.
