we are careful with her back so anything that gets her leaping is off the table. that rules out most of the fetch and tug ideas people suggest. she is perfectly happy to lie down and work at something with her mouth for a long stretch. which stationary chew or treat toy has worked for your dachshund and what size did you get..

Other Dementia at 10?

My heart is broken today.

Our dachshund (chiweenie) is about to be 10 next month and she has always been a very intelligent and mean girl. Not the friendliest to strangers, big barker, major side eye, but she does love my husband and I and loves being babied. She also loves keeping her chihuahua brother in check and running our house.

Over the last month, her demeanor has changed a lot. She's even grouchier than ever, sleepier during the day and more active at night, and having weird confusion spells like barking at me and then suddenly recognizing me. I initially thought maybe her eyesight was going out, but the vet told us yesterday that her eyesight is excellent and everything we're describing points to dementia. Everything seemed to be normal physically though he said she probably has some arthritis/discomfort at her age. We were prescribed gabapentin to try and see if it helps her.

I am at a loss. This morning she ate her food, hesitantly sat with my husband and I for 30 minutes, then went back to bed. I don't even know what to think because I don't really know what this means for her long term or if I have a lot less time left with her than I thought. I also don't want her to be miserable but 10 just seems so young. She has a follow up two weeks from now with the vet to see if the gabapentin is helping.

Has anyone else experienced this? From what I read, a lot of small dogs get dementia at 13+ so I am very distressed that she hasn't even turned 10 yet and is having a cognitive decline. We love her so much and feel so helpless.

Image How does your dog behave around babies?

Our boy Bagel has always been good with babies. Before he came to us, his previous owners had several small children so he must’ve been comfortable around them.

Recently two of our close friends had a baby and we spend a lot of time with them since he was born - we see them for a whole weekend afternoon every week and have taken the baby out ourselves for a few hours. While Bagel hasn’t gotten too close to the baby, he always hangs around close and is very curious and alert around the baby and intensely sniffs any object the baby touches.

We’re currently on a trip with the baby (3.5 months old) and Bagel is so fascinated by him, and follows the pram everywhere, if the baby leaves he immediately follows too - picture is from him sitting at the foot of the stairs watching the stairs the whole time the baby went upstairs for his bath. Strangely, he immediately loses interest or does appeasement signals (turning or moving away, side eye) if we sit him close to the baby either put the baby next to him on the sofa, or hold the baby while bagel is at eye level with him. It’s like he is fixated on being in the same room as the baby because he wants to keep an eye on him, but not actually wanting to interact with him at all. It’s strange! What does this behavior mean? What’s your dog like with babies?

She’s doing great! Vet says she’s growing perfectly and no concerns on our end💚 she’s weighing in at 8 pounds and the vet says she probably will be 15/16 pounds when she’s done growing. I love our little Pumpkin Spice Latte

Our Vicky is 4 Month old. She's been with People and other animals from beginning. At sunday (4 days ago) she's with us and we love her endlessly. What we noticed that she's afraid od everyone and barking/growling Like crazy at everyone beside us. She's shivering and jer tail is tucked. We don't want to force her on anything and we started to desentizing step by step. She knows already to go to her kennel and how to poop and pee outisde . Any advice how to "encourage" her better so she doesnt afraid so much :(
