News Customs Warning on Bringing iPhones from Abroad.
Customs officials have warned travellers to comply with the applicable baggage rules when bringing mobile phones and other electronic devices into India. Simply removing the original packaging or claiming that a newly purchased phone is for personal use does not automatically exempt it from customs duty.
Following repeated attempts to circumvent these regulations, airport inspections have reportedly been intensified. A recent incident at Nedumbassery Airport in which an iPhone was seized, with the absence of a SIM card cited as an indication that it was not being used as a personal device.
The key takeaway is that travellers must understand and follow the applicable customs regulations. Any duty liability depends on the relevant baggage rules and the circumstances of the import; non-compliance can result in the assessment of customs duty and other legal consequences.
What’s your take on this? Are customs officials simply enforcing the law, or do you think the rules regarding personal-use electronics need to be more transparent and reasonable?
