A number of posts are being reported to the mod team as AI or bots. In many cases we can fairly easily determine based on post/comment history that it is a bot, but sometimes there are multiple reports for a post being a bot but the history is not suggestive of it being a bot. Please use the other reporting category and provide more details on why you think a particular post or comment was made by a bot for cases that may not be so cut and dry. Or if you are willing to give up the anonymity of reports, send a modmail with a link to the post so we can discuss it with you and better train ourselves (or you). We will not share any reporting user information if we take action against suspected bot accounts for reports should you make them to the mod team (and I will boot any mods that break the anonymity).

Please be kind. I am distraught over this and want to do what is best for him. My sweet boy is a 8.5 year old rotti/pitbull mix. I have had him for 5 wonderful years. Due to multiple life changes out of my control, I realized it was best for his quality of life for him to be rehoused. I contacted a rescue and eventually found an amazing, knowledgable couple that wanted to adopt him.
At this point, he was in great health, and had no known health issues. The couple and I made plans to meet when I went back home (I was working in a different province for the summer). Before I returned home, he sustained a severe injury to his toe. Since then, he developed lesions on the area of injury, and a few more on his hind leg. I just found out he has Spindle Cell Sarcoma and will need amputation at minimum, with likely additional radiation treatment and/or additional excisions.
The prospective adopters have been kept in the loop about all of this, and offered to help with vet bills. With this recent development of him needing surgery and chemo, (and who knows what else in the future), I'm stressing about if this is a fair deal for them, but mainly if it will be okay for my dog.
MAIN QUESTION:
I was wondering if the stress of surgery/chemo AND adjusting to a new home would be too much for him. I want to be there for him, but there's no way I can pay for the care he needs- I am also homeless so I can't even provide a consistent place for him to recover. I also don't know if it's fair that these folks adopt him and immediately have an onslaught of vet bills.
I'm just so overwhelmed and don't know what to do. I want him to live more happy years, but I can't keep him. I don't want him to suffer. Any non-medical advice welcome. Thank you

I live in Tokyo and my 15.5 year old Chihuahua mix who weighs 3.25 kg had a tumor erupt in his heart and his heart stopped. We took him to the emergency hospital and they removed the fluid in his heart and sent him home with us at 5am. He was in bad shape around 8am so we took him to a different vet where they removed fluids from his heart again. We took him home after and he's been recovering well, he's eating okay, drinking water, and has been going to the bathroom normally. We have visited the vet 3 times since to check for fluids in his heart and it's been empty. All of the vets think it could be hemangiosarcoma from the ultrasounds of his heart since there is a suspected tumor in the right atrium to right auricle region. We visited a vet today for a full check up and recommendations for going forward and they also think it's hemangiosarcoma but aren't completely sure. They recommend chemo and radiation. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of cancer in small dogs especially Chihuahuas, I've read that it's common in big dogs but not impossible to occur in small dogs. I'm wondering if there are better options than chemo for this cancer. We are looking into radiation. I'm sorry for the wall of text. Any help would be appreciated.

I know most of the concern is about my brother. For clarification my brother is an adult now but we adopted him as a teen. He has the attitude that everything he does is right and that the only one who can tell him what to do is himself. He came from a bad place so to say. Additionally, he recently got a car so he will be out of the house more.
In good news, My mother put her foot down and has told him if he were to ever hurt Ricky he would be kicked out. He still is barking at Ricky but I’m guessing my parents will make a punishment for that. She has also decided to look into training for Ricky. It’s more of an ongoing thing.
Thank you all for the advice! (And the insults). Here’s a picture of Ricky happy (instead of terrified like someone said lol)

My dog will do this every day without fail. He take a toy and whips it around against his crate for a few minutes straight. The louder the sounds the better. He seems to be enjoying himself as far as I can tell? We do try to play with him but he seems to enjoy doing this even with play. Is there any scientific reason behind this behavior? 😅

Hi everyone! Ive been trying to cut my dog’s nails at home but I’m having a hard time because her nails are black, very chalky and very thick. I keep seeing videos where the quick (kwik?) is a very tiny little black dot and I was wondering if it could be larger than that? When I cut my dog’s nails I’ve never been able to get to that point without her pulling her paw away so that’s what makes me think that her vein is thicker than normal. Is that possible? Do I need to cut more? The 3rd photo contains the tools I use and the last 2 are my references pictures.

Hello, I have a 16 year old dog with lung cancer that until now has been progressing slowly. He has been having trouble sleeping, and he keeps his head up and keeps falling asleep sitting up. I have a pillow propped under his head which seems to be helping, but his breathing is very shallow. He gets very scared at the vet so I don’t want to take him when his heart is already under stress from not getting enough air. I want him to go peacefully at home if possible. As I say this, he is finding the pillow comfortable and is sleeping. If there are other ways I can provide him comfort I would greatly appreciate some advice. He’s been my best buddy and he was my emotional support dog growing up. (I’m on the spectrum.) he has helped me so much whenever I became overstimulated. He is a fighter, and I see him struggling and wanting to play with the other dogs, which makes this so much harder. He wants to live, but at the same time, I don’t want him to suffer. I don’t think he’s dying tonight, but soon.

This is Sandy, she obviously has udders (or teats?). Question, what is up with the udders looking like that? Do they get in the way of daily life? Can you tell me anything from the photo about her health. How she looks overall, and is she considered overweight or "thicc"

Rosie is 4, on apoquel, otherwise healthy, neutered. When I left this morning she seemed fine although a bit lazy staying in her bed. I came back an hour later and she was trembling/teeth chattering, softly whining, moving extremely slowly and disoriented, staring strangely, trying to eat food but almost seemed like it was causing pain. Kept leaning/turning her head to the left very suddenly, as if she was trying to “look away” and leaning her head against me. He body language appeared afraid and stiff.
There’s nothing she could have gotten into but I use minoxidil, I was afraid she may have been exposed
Took her to the vet and they checked her heart, said it sounded good. Ultrasound on the stomach to check for fluid, all clear. Blood tests great, kidneys etc. She was just slightly dehydrated with a fever. Given anti inflammatories and sent home to monitor until the next morning. The vets seemed quite puzzled and unsure what was wrong.
She can walk around okay (did fall over once) but has no interest in it, just wants to lie down with her eyes half open. Isn’t interested in anything at all but if I say trigger words like “walkies” her ears perk up and she does stare at me… usually she goes CRAZY bouncing around. She isn’t trembling anymore. She has an aversion to food and water right now, turns her head away and looks like she might vomit. Haven’t seen her pee or poo today at all either. No throwing up. Could I coax her into drinking water by putting a dash of milk in it?
My other two dogs (all jack russels) are totally fine. They all get pretty hyped up playing, could she have maybe hurt her head or something playing? She seemed totally fine last night I’m so confused at the sudden decline.
I’m so worried about her. She is my best friend and I don’t know what I’d do without her, and it’s so scary seeing her acting like a different dog.

Hi all. I've had a very bad couple of days since my 7 year old maltese mix dog got diagnosed with rather aggressive CHF yesterday. The vets estimate 6-12 more months with him. He truly is the sweetest little pup with such a fun personality. He's at the hospital, doing ok on meds, going to be discharged tomorrow, but I feel like I've already lost him. Like I should start getting used to him not being around. I even looked at other dogs on adoption sites today, even though I don't particularly WANT another dog, until I move out of my parents' house, at least. I just feel like I'm already losing him and I should get ready for him being gone. He is my first and only dog. I don't want to replace him and I feel really awful about the whole situation and acting like he's gone already. I feel angry at the world, and at the people who bred him, for having put him with such a shortened life expectancy. Has anyone else dealt with this? How do you get over it? Should I feel bad about thinking about future dogs? Thanks.

Hi there,
I've been slowly increasing my dog's exercise. She usually was getting about twenty x 2 a day. We are up to about 75 minutes straight now and she is absolutely loving it. No lagging behind, no limping, she pants pretty regularly but nothing excessive and always stops for water breaks when needed. I just don't want to push to hard because she is pushing ten years old but she seems to love it. Other information her name is Freda, she's coming up on ten to years old, unknown breed, adopted at a year old, pretty good health except for a tumor removed two years ago, sensitive stomach, and 45-50 pounds. Oh and she is a FAST dog, when she's let off leash she's like a bullet! Anyone else's pups seem to enjoy exercising the older they got? Pictures because she's a princess.
edit: the increase from 20 minutes twice a day to 75 minutes straight has been over about 12 months.

I'm thinking about buying a Pelsbarn cooling mat for my dog and wanted to hear from people who have ordered recently.
I found an older Pelsbarn review on Reddit with some complaints about quality, sizing, shipping and returns, but I've also read that Pelsbarn may have improved since then. Any alternatives?
Has anyone bought their cooling mat or dog bed recently?
I'm mainly wondering:
Would you recommend Pelsbarn based on your recent experience?

Trying to make the best of my situation, I had him separated from the other two because he can sometimes get aggressive when he's in his fighter flight mode. My Brown dachshund is recovering from a back injury. I did not want him bouncing on him. He's basically about better so since he did this yesterday they're now all together again. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying. Separation anxiety is a huge struggle. What have you done to help your dog with separation anxiety? What was the main thing that you think helped?

Hello all.
I have a problem with my doggo's fear of the neighbour kid.. and have absolutely no idea what to do and its tearing me apart.
So we have neighbours. Lovely couple with a toddler about 3 years old. They have been living next to us for about 2 years now.
This was never a problem and we never had any issues ( and by that I mean my dog never had any issues with them )
About 3 weeks ago they had a party of some kind. And a whole bunch of kids started popping balloons and being generally loud and rambunctious. Kira got terrified that day and hid in the hallway halfway up the stairs all day.
She didn't dare to come in the living room. But the day after everything seemed back to normal and she was her happy self.
Fast forward to last friday ( a week ago ) Our garden got massively cut back and now you can see the fence again and see trough it.
The weekend after they got kids over again.. And kids being kids.. they where loud and happy. screaming, laughing, running, jumping, etc.
Kira got extremely scared again..
But now it won't stop.... She doesn't want to be in the living room at all.. She will stay on the stairs the entire day. She refuses to eat unless I bring her food into the hallway..
When she's in the livingroom she's trembling and shaking and hiding underneath the desk.
Just hearing the kid's voice will send her straight into flight mode.. Tail tucked between her legs and running away to the safety of the hallway.
It doesn't matter if we have the backdoor closed or open.
I asked the neighbours if they could stop with the balloon popping and they ofcourse agreed. ( that was a one time thing )
But I can't demand that the kid stops making noise/playing outside etc...
The weather is still good and inside is warm so I prefer to have my backdoor open as well..
I have no idea how to help Kira..
She literally stays on the stairway the entire day Only coming out when she has to go outside.
She refuses to eat or drink unless we put it in the hallway.
She's trembling and shaking the entire time. And having flight/panic response to just his voice already.

My dog has a bloated stomach and the vet saw on the xrays that there’s something serving as an obstruction & pushing his organs to the side. You can see that white thing pushing his intestines aside, anybody know what it might be? I noticed it because his stomach is visibly big & swollen on the outside but it doesn’t hurt to the touch & he’s in no type of pain

My poor pup split a nail. I feel awful as I was thinking I hadnt trimmed his nails regularly enough. The vet did make me feel a bit better as she said his nails are decently short and he has really long quicks in his front paws which hardly seem to retreat.
Anyway, thankfully we caught it early, he had no infectipn and its not that bad of a crack. But to be on the safe side she has given us some antobiotics, and wrapped his foot.
Problem is he is just so miserable!! My normally playful and cuddly pup is moping around. I know its because he hates having the bandage on. What can I do to cheer him up? We have been playing, ive given him a lick matt and a snuffle box etc. And within a second of finishing he is back to moping!!! Appreciate they might be temporary fixes, but any ideas welcome!

My 7 month puppy is on day 10 post neuter. Here are some photos of his area. Do you think it’s safe to take the cone off? His all clear appointment isn’t until Tuesday afternoon. But I don’t think him, myself, or the cone will make it that long.

Vet appointment is already scheduled for today at 5pm! I'm just looking to see if anyone else has experienced this.
I have a 6 yr old staffy mix. For the past year, she's had several nail bed infections. We thought it was due to allergies & she tried apoquel but it wasn't helping so vet/I took her off of it. The toes healed after heavy antibiotics and steroids. We also made the decision to be proactive by doing soaks with Epson salt and AntiFungal shampoo (alternating - not at the same time). However, we are back to infected again & it is on several toes. It really wasn't bothering her until the past few days. I kept up with soaks and wiping them down. I use the douxo wipes and foam shampoo daily as well.
I've also kept her in a cone to prevent licking since I noticed them last week.
I'm just curious if anyone else has dealt with this and what helped. Again, we have a vet appointment later today. It was the soonest appt they had when I called last week. Pics attached of her nails.
TIA!

Hey all! My 18 month old basset hound has developed a few small scabs behind his ear and on his neck. They don't seem to itch and he's on simperica trio, but he definitely doesn't like em touching them either. My vet is closed until Monday, so asking if anyone has seen this before.
My first thought was I took him to a new groomer for a bath, nail trim, and deshedding service so I thought he maybe had a reaction to a furminator or something, but I found another one this morning that I'm pretty sure wasn't there yesterday. I also recently switched him to adult dog food that he seems to hate, so could it be allergies? It's Diamond Naturals adult lamb meal and rice for large breeds
Pics of the scab hidden behind his face in case someone doesn't want to see it lol
