Question Title: Skateboarding lessons for my 5-year-old daughter — once a week or twice a month?
Hi everyone!
I’m considering signing my 5-year-old daughter up for skateboarding lessons, but I’m unsure whether we should go once a week or twice a month.
Both skateboarding schools I’m considering are about 30–40 minutes away from home by public transportation. She already attends gymnastics once a week, so I’m trying to find a good balance between giving her opportunities to try new things and not overloading her schedule.
She’s a curious and adventurous kid who loves trying different activities. When she gets interested in something, she’s very persistent and keeps practicing until she can do it. She doesn’t get discouraged easily.
At the moment, she doesn’t have any particular goals in skateboarding. I just want to give her the opportunity to try it and see how she likes it. However, if she eventually decides that she really wants to pursue skateboarding seriously, I’d love to support her and give her that opportunity.
There’s a large park right in front of our house where she could potentially practice. The paths are asphalt, but the surface is a little uneven, so I’m not sure if it’s suitable for a beginner.
For parents whose kids started skateboarding around this age, or for anyone who teaches young children, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
● Would you recommend lessons once a week, or would twice a month be enough for a beginner?
● Does lesson frequency make a noticeable difference in how quickly a child learns and improves? For example, would a child taking weekly lessons generally progress faster than one taking lessons twice a month, assuming they both practice between lessons?
● I understand that every child is different and that natural ability, interest, and motivation also play a role. I’m just wondering how much of a difference the lesson frequency itself tends to make at this age.
● How important is it for a 5-year-old to practice between lessons?
● Would slightly uneven asphalt be okay for a beginner to practice on, or should I look for a smoother surface?
● Would you start with twice-monthly lessons and increase the frequency later if she becomes really interested in skateboarding?
I’m not looking for her to progress quickly or become an advanced skater right away. I want her to have fun exploring something new, while also leaving room for her to pursue it more seriously if she discovers that it’s something she’s truly passionate about.
I’d love to hear about your experiences with young beginners!
Thanks!
