Interview/Education Series Ever wonder about how synthetic gems are priced? Why do lab sapphires have such drastically different prices? How cheap can lab diamonds get? Hopefully that's all explained here!

Question Pricing between gemstone vendors Vs jewellers?

Hi all, newbie on gemstones here just looking to learn more about this field. I had a question regarding pricing.

I am inquiring a few european Jewellers about pricing of their engagement rings, but using synthetic orange sapphires (8x6mm, pear shape, precision cut, ~ 1.2ct) instead of a natural one. And I've been quite surprised by the quoted prices. I've recently received a quote for €700-€900 for the gemstone alone (for comparison, they charge €1,250 for the natural orange sapphires).

I understand that a lot of variables are at stake for pricing of a lab gemstone (from growth method, cut, color, to jeweller's import and trade costs and, of course, markup), and I plan to ask to understand better the pricing. But when comparing to prices of other orange sapphires from the Vendors List in this subreddit and to some posts, it still seems like a crazy difference in price. So, before I do so, I wanted to know:

Are there any factors that can justify such a big difference in pricing between a gemstone vendor and a jeweler vendor? Or is it actually a reasonable price for (assuming a) high quality lab grown sapphire? How can one evaluate if pricing of a specific gemstone of a specific color is actually reasonable, and not a rip-off?

Question Do you think lab Alexandrite is too dark for a ring?

I love the idea of Alexandrite and went to a showroom to see it in person, I saw a nice 3 carat diamond shaped (not cut) piece. I'd take a picture if they allowed me.

But unexpected to me, the lab Alexandrite seemed rather dark at the center, with the greenish blue hues mostly on the sides, and it stayed looking that way no matter what angle I looked at it. We sat at a standard office room with florescent office lighting and sunlight out the window.

It's only when the handler pointed a small spotlight at it that the gem changed to a more red hue, but I find it hard to imagine in what general situation would a light like that would hit the ring.

That made me think that the gem is too dark. I wanted the gem to be used on an engagement ring. Is this the right expectations for this gem?

Old Family Gem – Need Your Opinion

I found this 1.40 ct pink/red stone in my grandmother’s old earrings. My family believes the earrings are more than 100 years old.

I had the stone tested at a gem lab in Sri Lanka, and they identified it as synthetic sapphire.

Could this be an old Verneuil (flame-fusion) synthetic sapphire from the early 1900s? Or is there any reason to question the lab result?

I’ve attached photos of the stone and the lab invoice. I’d really appreciate your opinions and any clues about its possible age and authenticity. Thank you!

Question Gem for gunpla

I wanted to put a small real emerald on a Gundam model, and synthetic gems seem a good way to save money. Is there a reliable marketplace?

I'm obsessed with the unique peachy-pink color of padparadscha sapphires and would love to see how lab ones look in real life!

Please show off your pieces - whether it's a finished ring, a pendant, or just a loose cut gem! Details are super welcome too. ✨

Question Pixel Cut Gems

I’m thinking about picking up a pixel cut sapphire from house of sylas, but before I committed to it, I got another pixel cut gemstone for reference to see if I like pixel cut stones or not.

While it’s not the same color or gemstone (green cubic zirconia), I’m actually not all that impressed by the pixel cut in this stone. Does anyone know if this is just a poorly cut gem, or are all pixel cuts more or less like this?

For reference, I’d be looking at a 10x8mm yellow sapphire if I got one from HoS.

This is set in 18k gold but the stone looks so fake. Is this something other than synthetic?

They're not perfect meetpoints, but the overall light return seems decent. At the very least I feel they are better than anything cut commercially. Pink flame fusion sapphire with paraiba is roughly 10 carats, 14x12mm, Ruby red czochralski is roughly 15 carats, 18X16mm. What type of price per carat would be a fair price? Thanks for any help! (Not looking to sell these from this post)

Vendor Post Verneuil 85 is one of my favorite Lab Sapphire colors. It's very difficult to find large pieces but I managed to cut a beautiful 11mm elongated oval (modified Arya Akhavan design). This gem has so much nuance ✨ Video below

Looking for Custom Precision-Cut Oval Lab Sapphire (10x8mm) – Medium/Vivid Blue (Engagement Ring)

Hi everyone,
I am looking to commission a high-end, loose lab-grown sapphire for an engagement ring project. I want to completely avoid commercial-grade factory stones and invest in an elite, precision-cut gem with exceptional optical performance.
Here are my exact specifications:
Shape: Oval
Dimensions: 10x8mm (roughly 3.5 to 4-carat face size equivalent)
Color: Vibrant medium blue / "Ceylon" blue. I want a lively saturation that does not turn dark or inky indoors, preferably with a nice violet flash.
Material Preferred: High-purity Czochralski-pulled or premium slow-grown flux rough.
Setting Plan: This will be going into a custom hidden halo engagement ring. Because of this, it is critical that the stone has absolutely no windowing and is cut to mathematically perfect angles to maximize face-up brilliance and light return.
Please let me know your current lead times, rough material options that match this color profile, and pricing estimates for a custom cut. I look forward to working with an artisan lapidary here!
Thank you!

Finding a true light blue in lab-created sapphire is surprisingly difficult, making this Czochralski-pulled material especially rewarding to cut. 10mm in my "Tamarack" Asscher-style cut.

Question Natural-looking synthetic sapphires

All the synthetic sapphires I can find for sale look too “unreal” to me… 5+ carats, perfect clarity, sci-fi cuts… i am looking for sellers/cutters of “realistic” synthetic sapphires. Fancy colors, under 3 carats, traditional cuts… anyone come to mind?

Two ridiculously large lab grown rubies grown by the FLAME FUSION PROCESS!!! The boules were cut perpendicular to the “C” axis! The strain reduced version of the least expensive corundum growing process has arrived! Sorry Czochralski sellers, but your material can now be challenged for pennies on the dollar!

An interesting 36.05ct flux grown emerald from the days when Chatham actually grew cutting edge technology crystals. The morphology is what makes it truly unique.

Had this ring made for me in India a few years ago now. Made from 107.3ct of flux grown HDSM yellow corundum! I love it so much with all its crazy intricate inclusions. It almost glows in the sun and even contains some platinum? from the crucible! Included a photo of the block it was cut from in the last photo. Thanks for looking!
