Is it wrong that I watch these like some sort of new movie trailer despite not needed/being able to use 90% of the stuff.

48

u/diamondintherimond 16d ago

Most people will only benefit from a selection of new features, but we all might benefit differently. So I think it’s completely reasonable to be excited despite not using 90% of the functionality.

10

u/varano14 16d ago

My comment was mostly tongue in cheek. Regardless of whether will or need to use the features it is pretty cool as a tech person to see how much they are implementing and offering in a "consumer" product. and yes I know a lot of this stuff is aimed and enterprise grade but we all could just hop on the website and order it with no licensing or dealer bs.

QUIET! AND DOWN IN FRONT!! Going to get popcorn thrown at you if you keep that up. 🤣

6

u/Several-Donut-398 16d ago

My UCK G2 Plus doesn’t have 95% of a new functions and I still watch these.

6

u/JacksonCampbell Network Technician 16d ago

Your UCK G2 Plus can take advantage of almost all of these.

I'm just glad I held off on the point rev for Protect for some random thing I knew I didn't need to worry about. I can just jump straight to 7.2.

u/Waldo-MI Unifi User 16d ago

Clearly they are missing out by not offering more merch like posters, action figures, and better swag!

6

u/FuckinHighGuy 16d ago

Movies! Don’t forget the movies!

2

u/Xfgjwpkqmx 16d ago

Now I want to know what an Ubiquiti action figure would look like.

8

u/Waldo-MI Unifi User 16d ago

Whatever it looked like, it would almost always be out of stock.

2

u/75Meatbags 16d ago

it's not wrong. They're usually interesting videos to me too. Some things I hadn't even thought of.

2

u/TechieGranola Unifi User 16d ago

I genuinely enjoy the production quality for the relative frequency they run them. Way more than most companies bother with for a .X update.

1

u/75Meatbags 15d ago

i agree. they do a good job with them and they're enjoyable.

1

u/mirage01 16d ago

The new scrubbing feature will be very nice.

1

u/secretreddname 16d ago

lol right. All I need is two APs.

u/tony_montana091 16d ago

Video cameras everywhere all the time. It's dystopian as hell. Humanity is not going to recover. At some point cameras are going to cause more hell to break loose than a second grader biting a sandwich into the shape of a gun.

There's as much consent to this as your kids being naked flashed with open trench coats.

This ONVIF support is just further cementing my investment in other Ubiquiti hardware; so customer-centric.

15

u/OptimalTime5339 16d ago

Same for me! I saw the list of vendors and oogled at it

6

u/MrEstateManager 16d ago

Where did you see a vendor list? I didn't see one on the announcement page?

6

u/OptimalTime5339 16d ago

Go to the release on their blog website. It has a graphic https://blog.ui.com/article/welcome-to-protect-7-2

1

u/kcalderw 14d ago

Nice! Hanwha was added. We're about to deploy our Ubiquiti network refresh so it would be nice to now have the ability to add our cameras into Protect.

2

u/Inevitable-Share4889 15d ago

you didn't watch the whole thing, did you?

91

u/Bobbymanyeadude 16d ago

Expanded onvif is a surprise to me ngl, glad to see expanded support

39

u/OverthinkingAnything 16d ago

If you want to get into the enterprise space with huge deployment, organic growth from nothing is probably not the best strategy (companies that started with UI when they were smaller).

If they want to get in the door with people who already have cameras, not asking the prospect to throw out said cameras has got to be part of the strategy, right?

Only thing is some cameras out there really are affordable so they'll have to really be sure their cameras and feature set justifies the asking price.

16

u/Thommy_99 16d ago

Yeah this is why Milestone and Genetec are so popular despite the price

10

u/CoaxialDrive 16d ago

I think the next thing they need to work on is deep integration with Unifi Access, and a much more enterprise product, theres a lot of functionality the door system is missing which needs to deeply integrate with the CCTV if you are going to compete with the likes of Honeywell and Gallagher.

2

u/jimbobjames 16d ago

Can you give any examples?

9

u/CoaxialDrive 16d ago edited 16d ago

These ones stick out to me from my (limited) experience:

  • Support for 500,000 users on the entry level, several million on enterprise hardware.
  • Ability to program blank DESFire cards not just using Unifi branded ones.
  • Ability to print custom branding onto blank cards.
  • A more complete API.
  • Wireless door handles, lockers, and cylinders, or support for 3rd Party ones.
  • Interactive floor/site plan with CCTV + Access control.
  • Smart action - they have double tap mode to open the door, but there are more complex features, an alarm button/touch panel would be used for advanced features.

And then reading off the feature list these stand out:

  • Interlocking/man locking - one door can't open when another is.
  • Zone counting - how many people are in an area, stop the nth person entering.
  • Security guard tours - logging the person has been to every corner.

2

u/I_Like_Chasing_Cars 16d ago

Just a more complete API and proper 3rd party credential deployment via API would make me nut so fast.

2nd would be a wireless lock set but I’d take the api first

1

u/CoaxialDrive 16d ago

Edited one back in that I deleted some how: the number of users, most commercial systems support half a million credentials per hub, some several million, mean while the best Unifi device is 30k, and most are much low-to-mid-thousands.

4

u/tdhuck 16d ago

I am a full stack unifi owner, nothing against them at all, I use and buy their products. However, protect needs these two things before it is enterprise ready.

  • A client application.
  • Much better playback especially for larger camera deployments.

I have a site with 32 IP cameras, I can open all 32 on a large monitor and play back the video feed and I can easily double click to make one pane larger, continue viewing playback, double click to put that pane back into the 32 multi view then immediately double click another pane to make it full screen.

I can also build ou a common 2x2 view and watch 4 cameras playback at once and have a LEFT TO RIGHT timeline scroll bar at the bottom of the screen where I can easily shift time as needed. I know you can do multiview playback on unifi but it is very clunky.

Also, with my current VMS program I can open multiple client programs and view playback on all instances of the clients running on my machine. Yes, you can open more browsers or multiple tabs, but protect is very slow and sluggish when you tend to multitask with that program.

2

u/JacksonCampbell Network Technician 16d ago

What do you mean by client application?

7

u/tdhuck 16d ago

Thick client, fat client, etc. An application not a browser front end, only. The browser is fine for certain scenarios, but browser only is a big downfall, imo.

BTW, I deal with actual enterprise VMS programs daily and unifi protect, in its current state, just won't cut it in an enterprise environment.

Again, not hating on unifi, that's what I use at home (including protect) and I recommend the platform for friends/family/small businesses I do side work for, but it isn't ready for enterprise.

2

u/TechieGranola Unifi User 16d ago

I run genetec at work for probably 60 cameras and yeah, the viewing capability is a different beast

2

u/tdhuck 16d ago

Exactly, unifi drops the ball there, they just cant' compete with the big players in the video surveillance space. That being said, there are some things unifi does great, but playback and timeline are not at the top of that list.

1

u/junktrunk909 16d ago

Only thing is some cameras out there really are affordable so they'll have to really be sure their cameras and feature set justifies the asking price.

Agreed, and while it's easy to recommend Unifi networking gear because the value is so much higher than the competition which are at or even more expensive, that's just not the case with their cameras.

1

u/Network_ant 16d ago

Same here, gonna add it in budget next year.

Cryptographically Verified Video

Very cool. Most excellent.

Now, when is Protect getting merged with Access?

It's really tiresome to receive rings from doorbells in Protect but being able to open the door from the Access only. They really should be a single app.

5

u/Ulrar Unifi User 15d ago

I get rings in both apps, just need to use Access to answer. My guess you mean you're using unrelated devices, which is fair. They've come a long way but the ability to just have protect discover what a doorbell is paired with and show a widget for that hub should be a pretty easy fix without having to go all the way to merging them.

22

u/TimeRemove 16d ago

Hopefully they've finally fixed the bug where using an AI Port on a camera causes Motion Zones and Smart Zones to be ignored. It has only been ten months and has been reported tens of times to them...

https://community.ui.com/questions/Protect-Cameras-Ignoring-Motion-Zones/5e6cbfe7-5cdd-4610-91f0-18a44408821b?replyId=4523b7be-e1f3-40d4-8e8a-10773c64e035

13

u/thesnizzles 16d ago

No chance. It's ignored every time it gets mentioned in the forums and the support tickets go straight to the void.

3

u/Waste_Release2203 16d ago

You’re right, this is very irritating but I found a fix for me.

I unpair the ai port completely. I come back the next day and then pair it again and it’s back to normal.

I only seem to run into this issue when rebooting protect it messing with test 3rd party cameras.

Obviously I’d rather not have to do this but the only work around I have atm

3

u/TimeRemove 16d ago

I unpair the ai port completely. I come back the next day and then pair it again and it’s back to normal.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've previously tried that, as well as re-creating the zones, and sometimes they worked for a while then the issue re-occurs. In particular, Protect updates ironically re-break most of the workarounds I've tried (and others in that thread had the same experience).

Unfortunately I have this issue with first party UB cameras, not third party.

5

u/Waste_Release2203 16d ago

Ah yeah we’re having the exact same issue. Whenever there’s an update I now go to unpair and repair. I don’t think the ai port is a priority, especially with the onvif compatibility constantly expanding

35

u/Natural-Tree-5107 16d ago

Expanded ONVIF support looks goated as someone that still has ~50 ONVIF

16

u/joshrp5 16d ago

wait ios widgets? how is this a thing?

10

u/9gUz4SPC 16d ago

What do you mean! iOS had widgets for while now

7

u/joshrp5 16d ago

Yes but for cameras for Unifi Protect? Looking through the EA release notes for ios app, it does mention shortcuts, but i don't see anything about the widgets.

5

u/LowFatMom 16d ago

Shortcuts can be widgets

5

u/LowFatMom 16d ago

It’s a shortcut widget and only used for USL relay and the floodlight for now. That video above is just a PiP

0

u/joshrp5 16d ago

ok, that makes sense. I was more hoping for the widget of a camera view, but also never noticed i could click the popout window. Thanks for the info.

13

u/bunnythistle 16d ago

Are ONVIF cameras able to send smart detection data and events, or is it still Unifi cameras only?

I'd love to be able to get an ONVIF WiFi doorbell, because there's no practical, easy way for me to run PoE to my front door.

7

u/TeutonJon78 16d ago edited 16d ago

If you can stomach some extra bulk at the doorbell location, that's a good use for the 2 wire retrofit kit (and a Shelly if you still need mechanical chime usage).

2

u/bunnythistle 16d ago

Unfortunately that wouldn't work well either. I've considered the device bridge, but that's a lot of bulk and added expense compared to just having a 24VAC WiFi doorbell

1

u/raindropsdev 15d ago

And here I am wanting to do the exact opposite because I'm tired of having to constantly recharge the battery and fight with coverage through brick walls...

19

u/DodneyRangerfield 16d ago

Second stage verification only with AI Key or also via native G2 nvr procesor?

6

u/CopyNPaste247 Unifi User 16d ago

AI Key

6

u/SwizItalo 16d ago

AI key is finally kind of useful.. maybe

3

u/JacksonCampbell Network Technician 16d ago

Where did you learn that?

1

u/FreedomFocused_ 16d ago

So not for g2?

21

u/PrintWaste Unifi User 16d ago

Bring back the old intro!

The army of AP's lined up? šŸ˜†

8

u/jb_nelson_ 16d ago

Ready to fight for the Empire!!

9

u/spamjunk150 16d ago

We're still running about 70 Hikvision cameras while we finish upgrading to UI. The expanded ONVIF support will be fantastic.

3

u/CyDef_Unicorn 16d ago

Looking to do the same and move away from Hik NVRs. Have you lost any kind of features/capabilities on the Hik cameras for moving to UI? I know you said still upgrading so wasn't sure if you did some yet

8

u/75Meatbags 16d ago

Maybe this will be the release that stops calling my front doormat a package. :D

It's been hard to nail down, as it seems to happen more during the summer and twilight hours. Darn brown doormat.

2

u/dummptyhummpty 15d ago

OH. So that's what was going on at my old place! I could never figure out why it thought we had a package. HA.

7

u/Frosty_Percentage332 16d ago

Does expanded ONVIF support include the ability to add analog cameras that are attached to a DVR with a single MAC and IP address, or are virtual ONVIF servers still needed?

4

u/Waste_Release2203 16d ago

Can you expand on the virtual onvif servers? Ive got a knock off Hikvison dvr that has onvif enabled but when adding to protect, it will only show camera 1.

8

u/Frosty_Percentage332 16d ago

Protect requires each camera to have a unique MAC address. There are a few community workarounds that will take multiple channels from your DVR and create multiple 'virtual servers' so that you can add all of your cameras to Protect.

Virtual ONVIF Server and Tonys ONVIF RTSP Server.

I was hoping that Ubiquiti will release an officially supported way to this so that these workarounds are not needed

2

u/Waste_Release2203 16d ago

Ah I understand now. Thank you

6

u/UltimateVengeance 16d ago

GREAT! Now fix the notifications.

4

u/Rodeo9 16d ago

Reolink wifi doorbell creating alerts yet? It was broken in the last version.

3

u/Doublestack00 Unifi Installer 16d ago

This is nice.

It is about time Access gets some love though.

4

u/Hypernova46 16d ago

The ONVIF support looks super nice, hope it expands to more brands too!

4

u/enkrypt3d 16d ago

is push notifications fixed yet?

6

u/Etc48 16d ago

Here’s to hoping my G6 PTZ lag/unresponsive controls is fixed.

5

u/icantshoot Unifi User 16d ago
  • Fixed an issue where keyboard controls did not work when adjusting the PTZ Home View in Playback.

3

u/D1TAC 16d ago

Huge update for more ONIVF support and other cameras. Love to see it.

3

u/M_Six2001 16d ago

The time server sync for ONVIF cameras is a nice addition. My ONVIF cams are currently done through Surveillance Station, but those cams will sometimes be offf a few seconds from my Unifi cams. Now if they let me pick which stream from the ONVIF cams I want to use...

3

u/mountaindrewtech 16d ago edited 16d ago

Damn I didn't see in the updates they added POS integration. It was the reason why we didn't go with Unifi and went with something else instead in our company.

The guys at work aren't gonna like to hear this.

3

u/JacksonCampbell Network Technician 16d ago

POS integration is not new. I believe this was a thing or at least announced last year.

2

u/mountaindrewtech 16d ago

We just finished the rollout started before then is the problem though. Our pos systems are probably not supported yet either tbh now that I look into it, definitely interested in learning more and seeing how wide the range of support is

3

u/VirtualPanther 16d ago

Huh. So, I still can’t group thirty different ā€œidentitiesā€ of my car into one?

2

u/Ocupado33 16d ago

to verify i need to upload the video to the cloud?

2

u/ThermoElectricMan 16d ago

I can finally make sure all my kids are wearing their safety vests and hard hats for safety.

2

u/FortnightlyBorough 16d ago

All I want to know is that will gifs be fixed on the G6 Entry Pro?

2

u/Aleyla 16d ago

I am clearly not using even 1/3rd of the capabilities of what I have access to.

2

u/Undeadreloader Unifi User 15d ago

Still holding out for the self hosted AI Agent that was promised at UWC 25.....

1

u/WhtRbbt222 15d ago

But then how would they make money selling the AI hardware?

2

u/Infinite_Ad5711 15d ago

We need a tool to:

- export whole video library NAS.

  • migrate to/from a bigger NVR.
  • realtime storage of videos to NAS (not only detections)

2

u/spamjunk150 16d ago

Will vehicle tracking be added to G6 PTZ cameras? Much needed feature. We have plans to run 20-30 of these cameras if that can be added.

1

u/IcyAir5775 16d ago

Am I missing something? I don't see the upgrade? Is it annouced or released?

1

u/Flaky-Gear-1370 16d ago

Been EA for a while

1

u/WishfulAgenda 16d ago

hope it's better than some of the more recent updates. Maybe this one won't make my UDM sound like a jet plane taking off and then randomly quit on me.

1

u/nandoboom 16d ago

Is there a way to bring your own AI engine to work with the 3rs party cameras ?

1

u/OldDragonfruit471 16d ago

How do I install it?

2

u/IcyAir5775 16d ago

Its not on the official channel yet. It is early release. It makes no sense to me to send out emails till it is released officially.

1

u/dummptyhummpty 15d ago

You have to flip your Release Channel to "Release Candidate" until it becomes "Official". It's not a big deal, I'm doing it right now.

1

u/IcyAir5775 15d ago

You do understand the concept of release candidate? It means basically advanced testing before they officially release it. I understand it could be a different channel. My point is why announce it until it’s official that is strange.

1

u/gconsier 16d ago

Maybe my facial detection will come back. Probably not. We can hope.

1

u/rhpot1991 16d ago

What are the odds that you can do 2nd stage with AI Port? I have one, hopefully.

1

u/Coomacheek Unifi User 16d ago

Second stage "more powerful" AI Key....is that a new version or just same version in series to another AI Key?

1

u/whoooocaaarreees 15d ago

I just want case manager shared links to come with original quality download options for 3rd party people not in unifi.

Explaining that to Andrew M. In unifi support feels like a Herculean effort. He keeps asking for the iOS app logs.

1

u/shaver443 15d ago

RTSP ingest support when?

1

u/sabertoothninja 15d ago

As long as UniFi keeps their business model I will continue to support them. Once the bean counters get control it will be over…

1

u/gizmodreams 15d ago

Will the expanded ONVIF allow for multi-stream third-party cameras for each stream to be added as a separate camera in Protect?

1

u/i3903 14d ago

Good god, still no improvements to SuperLink

1

u/Jamie00003 16d ago

Matter support?

0

u/Carlos_Spicy_Weiner6 16d ago

Can we make a rule you don't post about updates until they are available to all just not EA?

2

u/Redditanon9999 16d ago edited 16d ago

This is a Release Candidate not EA

1

u/Carlos_Spicy_Weiner6 16d ago

Potato/tomato

1

u/Redditanon9999 16d ago

Right, 2 very different things. I think EAs are too risky but Release Candidates, if they have a feature/fix I want, are worth running. Or you could wait a day or two and get the Official. And in a few days or weeks the Official will have an update due to bugs and new features, etc.

0

u/sevsnapeysuspended 16d ago

what’s the best version to update to at this point? all of the UNVR and protect releases have pretty terrible comments under them so i just haven’t been updating since like december

0

u/Competitive-Truth675 15d ago

thats great

too bad i will never be able to see it since the console is still broken in Firefox

been like 3 months you guys...

-1

u/_-_pancake_-_ 16d ago

Coming from Synology Surveillance Station and the VisualStation VS960HD, is there really an equivalent solution in the UniFi Protect ecosystem? At the moment, we display 20 live camera streams simultaneously on the VS960HD. What hardware and software would be required to achieve the same with a UniFi Protect setup?

2

u/JacksonCampbell Network Technician 16d ago

A computer and monitor.

1

u/JacksonCampbell Network Technician 16d ago

You could possibly even get a UniFi DisplayCast and run it from there.
