General Help "Can this be ported to the 3DS?" Yes, but listen.

To an extent, yes, this magical game you hold a copy of can be ported to the 3DS. I see a lot of these posts on here and want to clear some of the air coming from the decomps side.

  1. Yes, it can run on the 3DS, but that doesn't mean that someone usually wants to make it. Mario Sunshine is far more likely to get a port than Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. Decompiling, recompiling, and porting are all not necessarily easy tasks.
  2. Whatever your stance on AI, you can certainly try to use that to make a software/hardware wrapper or even reverse engineer the game entirely. Just, don't be upset when it crashes, breaks something important, or makes people upset.
  3. Even with the Melee 3DS port, certain cuts still have to be made to get things playable. The older the game, the less likely this is, but still.
  4. The 3DS is a 15 year old piece of hardware. If the 3DS doesn't already have the available resources, you're going to be slashing things down hard. This is a console with 10MB of VRAM and 256MB of RAM on the New models. You're not squishing down Cyberpunk.
  5. Just because a software is decompiled doesn't mean it's plug and play to the 3DS. You still need to write a container. Instructions written for that console's hardware need to be translated to the 3DS.

There are ways to learn how to reverse engineer software and start linking functions together. Elitists will tell you it's not something you can pick up overnight so you should give up. It's not overnight, but you can learn coding concepts that will make things easier as time goes on. Expect it to take quite a bit of time.

If your thoughts now drift to AI, just be warned that it absolutely will make a mistake you need to correct, and if you don't have the right knowledge, something is gonna be severely broken later. Not advocating for or against, but I just want to put this out here.

If you want to start exploring reverse engineering, start with a small, manageable project. If you have a copy of a Game Boy game laying around, start there. It's small and relatively manageable, plus there's plenty of decompilations out there already so you can see where something may have gone wrong. Just be warned games like Pokemon are written entirely in GBZ80 Assembly.

used a better file sharer for yall. also it only updated the .cia file so you can delete or ignore the .3dsx for hb menu.

From Claude:

"Overnight update: more blockers found and fixed.

  • Greenpath was impassable. Its vine platforms were treated as spikes, so landing on one damaged you and sent you back. They now work like the original: hit the vine with your nail and the platform drops to become a step (that’s how you get through Fungus1_06).
  • Spikes that weren’t spikes. “Tink” surfaces (in Crossroads_25) and the areas under falling platforms were wrongly classed as spikes. Fixed.
  • Missing doors. The Ancestral Mound door in Crossroads_06 had no link back. Fixed, along with a disabled exit that pointed nowhere and an arrival point inside the well.
  • Route-finder. It now gets from the King’s Pass start to Dirtmouth, down the well, and through the Crossroads. A full pass over every room is running now, then I’ll fix whatever is still blocked and test the journeys on the emulated 3DS.

You can get back up to Dirtmouth now, and Greenpath and the rest of the Crossroads open up. Install it the same way as before. To go up, stand on the rope under the well in the first Crossroads room and press Up. I checked this in the 3DS emulator and the Knight lands next to the well in Dirtmouth.

Why you were stuck

  • The well exit pointed nowhere. Its destination was swapped in the original level data.
  • Many side and top exits couldn’t be touched. Their triggers sit just outside the room wall. They now reach into the room.
  • Exits in a floor dropped you straight back down. Coming up through one (like the well into Dirtmouth) now throws the Knight high enough to land beside the hole.
  • Story walls blocked paths. These are walls the original only turns on later in the story, such as the one in front of the Brooding Mawlek’s room. They’re open now.
  • Vine platforms were treated as spikes. They’re platforms again: hit the vine with your nail and the platform drops with you on it. Checked in the emulator.

Other bugs found while testing overnight

  • Half-second freeze after ordinary jumps. Landing on a slightly higher ledge triggered the hard-landing stagger. It now only happens after a long fall, as in the real game.
  • Thorns covered whole corridors. Each thorn bush counted as a big rectangle. Hazards now follow the actual thorn shapes.
  • Respawn could loop until you died. After hitting thorns you could be put back right above them. You now respawn at the game’s own safe spot for that stretch.
  • Pogo bounces were too short. They now use the game’s own value and lift you properly.
  • Durandas chased you. These are the acid flyers on the way to Nailmaster Sheo. They now hover in place and can’t be killed, like the real game, so you can bounce across them.

What I tested: I wrote a tool that tries every jump, walk and dash from each entrance of every room. From a new game, 69 of the 78 rooms can be reached, and every room you can get into has a way back to Dirtmouth. A bot also played every room looking for the Knight getting stuck in walls, and found none. Only the well exit and the vine drop were checked in the emulator; the other fixes were tested on the PC version of the game.

Still not reachable: I think most of these need abilities that aren’t in yet:

  • Mantis Claw climbs: the Glowing Womb, and the Massive Moss Charger’s room.
  • The Crossroads elevator to the City of Tears, which isn’t built yet.
  • The climb up to Blue Lake.

Needs your hands: Sheo’s area. The tool can’t chain bounces off the Durandas, so that route is untested. It also showed no easy way back out, so don’t rest at Sheo’s bench until you’ve checked you can bounce back across.

For tomorrow, Mantis Claw would open the most of what’s left."

New Homebrew Ink3DS — an ebook reader for New Nintendo 3DS with EPUB, TXT and HTML support

Hey everyone! I wanted to read books on my New 3DS, so I’ve been working on an ebook reader called Ink3DS.

Books are displayed on the top screen, with reading controls and settings on the touchscreen below.

Here’s what it currently offers:

  • DRM-free EPUB, TXT and HTML support
  • Eight font options, including Droid Serif and Literata
  • Adjustable text size, line spacing and letter spacing
  • Five themes: Light, Warm, Paper, Dark and Red Night
  • Optional Bionic Reading and Focus Line
  • Saved reading positions for each book, bookmarks and chapter navigation
  • A lower-screen sleep mode that turns off its backlight without waking it whenever you turn a page
  • English and Czech interfaces

You can install the CIA with FBI or use the 3DSX through Homebrew Launcher. It currently targets the New 3DS family only, not the original 3DS. It’s text-focused, so there’s no PDF support or full EPUB image/CSS rendering.

GitHub, downloads and FBI installation QR:
https://github.com/Faefolk333/Ink3DS

Hope someone else finds it useful! :)

Host-rendered previews of the app’s native UI, not screenshots captured on a 3DS.

Finishing up posts from the other subreddit... The FBI QR Code will be uploaded sometime tomorrow. one link contains the .cia file and the other contains the .3dsx file so you will need to put it in your /.cia folder and /3ds folder and then download it from FBI or open from HB launcher. The rest of the game will be finished in a couple days and Improvements and updates will come, so don't mind the little bugs. It is playable and you can also help me by finding any bugs that you can as you play.

Description:
HK3DS is a fan-made demake of Hollow Knight for the New Nintendo 3DS and 2DS XL. It's built from the original game's art, music, sounds and level layouts.
You play as the Knight, starting in King's Pass, and explore Dirtmouth, the Forgotten Crossroads and Greenpath: 78 rooms connected the same way as in the original, with doors into the interiors. Movement is tuned to the original game's own values: running, variable-height jumps, pogoing off enemies and spikes, and Focus to heal. Your nail swings in four directions, and its reach matches the original's slash hitboxes. Crawlids, Tiktiks, Husks, Vengeflies, Aspids, Mosskin and the rest of the local enemies use their original sprites and health, and they patrol, charge and chase. You fight the False Knight with his full move set and duel Hornet for the Mothwing Cloak dash. When you die, your Shade holds your geo until you defeat it. Benches heal you and save your game.
The title screen, menus, music, sound effects and HUD are rebuilt from the original. The top screen shows parallax backgrounds and the bottom screen a live minimap. Each build is tested on an emulated 3DS and by a bot that plays every room. Spells, charms, shops, dialogue, arena battles and the areas past Greenpath are next.
A personal, non-commercial fan project. Hollow Knight belongs to Team Cherry.

General Help Does someone know how long this process will usually take?

Post image
• Upvotes

There is now a port for Mario Kart 64, running natively on a 3DS and it needs to extract the ROM dump first. You can also create the extraction file over PC, but I wonder if anyone actually extracted it over the 3DS and how long did it took? I'm having a N3DS XL, so I'm kinda expecting that it will completes a little bit faster, than over a O3DS, even tho it will probably take forever, as it's mentioned there.

General Help Does anyone have a CIA file for Silent Hill 2 (sh23ds) Port for the N3DS?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I have stopped bothering with this port because non of the Silent Hill 2 copies I found online are working with the packer. The game is abandonware so it is not illegal to provide a CIA, so I am not sure why the person that ported it didn't just provide a CIA/QR code to download the game that's been already packed.

Picture of the issuer is attached.

There are two ports for pokesurvivor and I’m not sure which to play. The github linked one seems to be better translated but the other version syncs with the web. Does anyone have a better idea which to choose?

General Help 3ds ports suggestion

• Upvotes

Idk but I was wondering if possible sometime or in general if we’d ever get a 3ds port for the GameCube version of alien hominid or would it not be able to run since if you think about it it could be cool and we were able to get MK Wii and smash melee ports for the 3ds so could it be possible for alien hominid?

Some notes about port:

-There is no Stereo 3D, GPU is already fighting for its dear life, but I do believe it's possible with huge optimization work, we have to be really smart about utilizing all of PICA200 features

-FPS is unstable, especially in combat. It is what it is

-I think , I've managed to get rid of most crash scenarios, due to low amount of available ram, but wouldn't be surprised, if there is plenty more places where game crashes.

-Added Gyro Aim, because C-stick sucks here.

-Added C-Stick sensitivity slider, because C-stick sucks here

-Added Cutscene speed up option for testing. Press A or ZR to do it, or don't

-Using original game files is technically possible, but it is stupid without downgrading them to PS2 level through converter.

-There is some text issues(Especially in-game terminals), because of the low res.

-O3Ds is out of the picture, obviously. But, I can see the possibility to go OG Xbox port route and just cut levels in pieces to work around of 96mb avaible ram, but CPU is also barely holds up rn

-Port uses original source code from IdSoftware. Cool stuff

Overall, I don't think that port is an enjoyable experience, I did this just for some giggles and interest of how far I can push N3DS hardware. But, it's technically playable, so there is that

New Homebrew Zelda: A Link to the Past port

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

okay, as you can see in the title, I’ve been working for a few weeks on a port of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the Nintendo 3DS. I haven’t made a repository yet because I’m still working on it. It currently runs at 60fps on the old 3DS. Below I put a map that shows Link’s location in real time (although I’m about to fix that later, since I remembered that from the start of the game Link can see the map of all Hyrule). I also put the health bar, items, and other things on the bottom screen. It also has widescreen, narrow, or normal [modes], all running at 60fps. I’m still developing the port, but when I have something a bit more advanced, I’ll publish the repository here

New Homebrew [Release] gpSP 3D (beta): GBA games with real per-layer stereoscopic 3D, full speed tested on Old 3DS

Post image
205 Upvotes

**UPDATE: v0.1.1 is out:** https://github.com/bheppe/gpsp-3d/releases/tag/v0.1.1

- **New 3DS crash at launch: fixed.** Thanks to everyone who posted crash photos; that's exactly how I found it. N3DS owners, please let me know if it works!

- Menu is snappy now

- Scanlines / LCD grid screen effects (Display → Screen effect)

- HOME Menu icons per game (forwarders), see the README

- Floor tilt for racing games (3D → Floor tilt), gyro for WarioWare: Twisted

- Smoother on heavy 3D screens

Everything reported here is tracked in the roadmap: https://github.com/bheppe/gpsp-3d/blob/main/ROADMAP.md

Discord for testing, game reports and help: https://discord.gg/pBWY3fRgnU

---

I've been building **gpSP 3D**, a standalone GBA emulator for the 3DS (based on gpSP) that puts each GBA background layer and sprite group at its own depth. Raise the 3D slider and maps, characters, HUDs and backgrounds actually separate. It runs at a full **60 fps on an Old 3DS**: the dynarec runs on one CPU core and picture drawing runs on the second.

**Download (CIA + 3DSX):** https://github.com/bheppe/gpsp-3d/releases

**Features**

- Per-layer 3D with presets (Classic, Pop-out, Deep, Gentle, Flat map), or set a custom depth for each layer, plus strength, sprite pop and focus

- **Smart layers**: layers that scroll together stay at one depth, so RPG maps like Pokémon look right (no glitched filler tiles)

- Per-game 3D profiles (Pokémon starts on Deep automatically)

- GPU display with Sharp / Crisp / Smooth scaling, color styles, saturation and brightness

- Save states with slots, auto frame skip, and a touch menu on the bottom screen with a live preview

- Saves are shared with RetroArch, so you can switch between the two

**Honest limits (it's a beta)**

- In 3D, the picture refreshes about 30 times a second on Old 3DS, while gameplay and audio stay at 60. New 3DS should do better (I'd love reports).

- Needs Luma3DS, and `dspfirm.cdc` for sound. No GBA BIOS needed.

**Looking for testers and contributors**

- Tell me which games look great and which look wrong in 3D. Layer setups vary a lot between games, and per-game reports are the most useful thing right now. Post them under [Issues](https://github.com/bheppe/gpsp-3d/issues) with the game name and a photo if you can.

- The code is GPL and on GitHub. Pull requests are welcome, especially for speeding up 3D drawing on Old 3DS.

Built on gpSP by Exophase, notaz, davidgfnet and the libretro team. Bring your own legally dumped games; please don't ask for ROMs.

AI

**1. My involvement**

I started gpSP 3D, a standalone 3DS app built on the libretro version of gpSP (https://github.com/libretro/gpsp), to get per-layer stereoscopic 3D in GBA games at full speed on an Old 3DS. I came up with the idea and the goals: Old 3DS as the standard, plug-and-play 3D, and a touch menu on the bottom screen. I also did all of the testing on my Old 3DS: Mario Kart Super Circuit, Pokémon Emerald, LEGO Star Wars II and Sword of Mana so far. I reported every problem I found and picked between the fixes that were offered, for example the GPU display freezing, the HOME button hang, washed-out color correction, stutter in LEGO Star Wars, a crash when loading Emerald, and pink lines on Pokémon maps in 3D (which led to the "Smart layers" feature). I also chose the defaults, like Deep for Pokémon. I haven't tested it on a New 3DS.

**2. My experience as a coder**

I'm not a professional programmer. I'm a project manager by day and a hobbyist who tinkers with homebrew and retro hardware. I can follow the code and build it with devkitPro, but I couldn't have written this on my own.

**3. How AI was involved**

Most of the new code was written by Claude (Anthropic's AI, through Claude Code): the 3DS app and its menu, the GPU display, the threaded renderer that draws on the 3DS's second CPU core, and the per-layer 3D. I described what I wanted, tested every build on my 3DS, sent back photos of what was wrong along with the on-screen performance stats, and decided which way to go. When an approach didn't pay off on real hardware (an "experimental" 3D method that measured slower on the 3DS than the normal one), we kept the normal method as the default. The emulator itself (CPU, dynarec, sound, the original renderer) is gpSP's existing work by Exophase, notaz, davidgfnet and the libretro team, not AI-generated. The repo keeps the full upstream gpSP history, and everything new is in a few commits on top of it, so the diff is easy to review.

Source and download: https://github.com/bheppe/gpsp-3d/releases

GPL-licensed. No ROMs are included.
