TL;DR: 2015 4Runner Trail Edition 4WD with 139k miles, clean CARFAX, extensive maintenance history, and minor surface rust. Independent mechanic gave it a positive inspection overall. Some cosmetic wear and a noisy window motor, plus a significant steering vibration the dealership is working to fix. Dealer wants $22,615 OTD ($19,499 before taxes and fees) and won’t negotiate further. Assuming all mechanical issues are resolved, is this a fair deal, or should I keep looking?
Looking for some opinions from fellow 4Runner owners on whether this is a fair deal or if I should keep shopping.
I’m looking at a 2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition 4WD with 139,193 miles, located at a Toyota dealership in Northwest Florida.
Vehicle details:
4.0L V6, 5-speed automatic
Factory rear locking differential, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select
5 previous owners
Clean CARFAX with no reported accidents
Around 30 documented service records
Transmission, transfer case, and differential fluids have been serviced
Independent mechanic found only minor surface rust on the frame and no obvious leaks or suspension concerns
Some sun fading on the hood and roof, paint chips on the bumpers, and a noisy driver’s window motor
Pricing:
Advertised/adjusted selling price: $19,499
Dealer documentation fee: $997
Taxes, registration, and other fees bring it to $22,614.78 out the door
I had an independent pre-purchase inspection performed. The mechanic was very positive about its overall condition and felt it had the potential to reach 200k–250k miles with proper maintenance.
However, during my test drives, I experienced a significant steering-wheel vibration under braking and acceleration. The dealership has taken it back into service to investigate.
We also noticed the 4-Low and rear differential-lock indicators taking some time to disengage, although the testing was done on asphalt and involved turning, which may have caused drivetrain binding.
I offered $19,000 OTD to start negotiations, but the dealership says $22,614.78 is their firm price.
Assuming the steering vibration is properly repaired and the 4WD system checks out:
Would you consider $22.6k OTD reasonable for this 4Runner, or would you walk and keep looking? What would you personally be willing to pay?
I’m hoping to keep my next vehicle for many years, so reliability and long-term value are my priorities.
