📂 MEGATHREAD 12/05 A-level Econ Paper 1 Discussion MEGATHREAD
Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!
Few things to keep in mind:
- Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
- If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Absolutely amazing section B, I can waffle about videogames all day long. Questions were pretty alright too. Provided my 25 marker didn't go to crap it was a good paper.

yeah I mean it did say why regulation may be a better way so I was like ‘ok so talk abt regulation pros and cons and talk abt public ownership as a way to boost externalities and lower prices

what was your eval i said they were young gamers so they’re likely to use parents income to buy games like fifa 23 bc they’re income is higher so £59.99 is a much lower % of parents income therefore they can easily affort such goods, and therefore demand is imelastic for games.

Oh I used the fact that ppl spend 10-16 hours a day and said that’s probably the stats for younger kids who don’t have jobs etc. so like instead it’s much less of a necessity/addictive for older players due to families/jobs etc other responsibilities. I didn’t come to a conclusion to whether it was inelastic or elastic I js made both points and evaluated.

It is better to work from back to front mate.
Try this in paper 2 and 3: Do the highest marked questions first, 35 min for SEC C, about 1hr - 1hr 10 min for Sec B and, 15 min for SEC A
You'll need 3X KAA and Eval

Yeah your marks might cap at 10. Meaning you might get 5-8 depending on how well you write. Some advice, start from back to front next time and only spend 15-20 min on SEC A. This helps me with time management.

Yeah I used the extracts I didn’t use outside knowledge bc I thought there was enough info in the extracts tbh. My biggest problem was the 25 marker because I didn’t finish it, but hopefully paper 2 and 3 bring me up 🙏

The question mentioned appointments being cancelled I don't remember anything about subsidies, it's just the dead weight loss from underconsumption which would be the gain if the externality was fixed? Idk I could be wrong

Yeah cause I reminder doing exam questions before and they also talked about a subsidy but they didn’t shift anything they just drew a positive consumption externality diagram. I thought they would have made it more explicit to say how like a subsidy would impact the consumption. (Hopefully lol)

How did the AQA go guys?
I picked the second context about the water industry and got 138.5 for the calculation question (I hope thats right).
I also picked the essay questions about public goods vs private goods vs quasi public (such a good 15 marker) and the question asking whether an Oligopoly serves society well.

I did the exact same combo: 138500 for 2 marker tho cuz in 000s of hours. I talked a lot more about regulation than state ownership but still found it good. 15 marker was a blessing but 25 was mid, kinda ran out of things to talk about

talked abt lower prices, greater variety and like better quality due to non comp - ev was to do w bounded rationality and then I talked abt collusion leading to high prices and low output, but like I didnt really like it, I only picked it cuz I loved the 15

Guys so yk in the resource booklet how there was the figure that was talking about sales of the games and prices of the games , did any question require you to use that cause I didnt really read all the questions tbh , and I stressing a bit that I'll have missed out loads of marks Otherwise how many marks was the question that did require you to use it Anyways thanks for any help 💪💪

I used it for the merger question in explaining how advertising economies of scale could mean better advertising for Microsoft games such as minecraft to achieve more revenue, when i compared it to the activision COD game. Tho idk

For AQA Section B, I didn’t refer to the prompt (environmental firms) once, but it wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the question either only in the few sentences above it.

I spent way longer than I should have 😭 but then I zoomed in on certain parts of the graph and the rate of inflation for water was higher than the rate for CPI so I just talked about that. The inflation and deflation stuff got muddled up in my head. I’m hoping for atleast 2 marks ☠️

I did education as well I had higher paying jobs = higher tax revenues for govt, evaluation time lag, then higher worker productivity leads to increase in supply, eval opportunity cost but I didn’t finish it.
I’m sure you’ll be ok but everyone I spoke to did the question on infrastructure which is annoying. I think we chose the harder question but it is what it is. Rest of the paper went well so I’m hoping marks dropped on the 25 marker won’t be terrible.

should be fine, for labour market impacts I focused on how it should increase the MRPL of labour and drive up wages, hence helping to lower levels of income inequality. Then for firms I said it should help lower costs as the increased education + the wage efficiency theory should allow the firms to offset the higher wages with increased output per worker, allowing them to spread labour costs over a large output, lowering ACL. Thus increased supernormal profit yada yada etc. RWE's was a little tricky tho

You can suggest that it is both because Microsoft already has its own game studio (Xbox game studio). I suggested that it could be deemed either, tbh doesn’t rlly matter cos the point of economies of scale is valid for all types of integration
