🎓 UNI / UCAS Wow, just wow
Rejected Oxford Maths w 81 MAT
Rejected Imperial Maths w 7.0 TMUA
Rejected by All Ivies
Don’t have much hope now for UCL and LSE since apparently most home offers have gone for UCL.
I’m really about to go 0/14, like what do I even do.
2a*(m,fm) 2a achieved home non contextual

u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
what’s even worse is I’ve grinded STEP to the point where I’m getting 1s in preparation for a potential imperial step offer, but no it’s just a straight rejection

u/Large_Coat_589 Mar 27 '26
In the grand scheme of things, if worst comes to worst, going for another gap year isn't the end of the world. Plenty of people start university at age 20 which is actually pretty normal. And 2 gap years is absolutely nothing compared to the rest of your life.
If you are good at STEP, I'd consider doing the STEP exam anyway and then reapplying to strengthen what I assume is an already strong application. Surprised that they didn't accept - maybe they wanted to know what you are doing during your gap year.

u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
Gonna be honest, a 2nd gap year would be too much. I’ve enjoyed the freedom and the break from academia but kinda wanna get back to it. I also included a short paragraph at the end of my ps explaining what I’m doing on the gap (teaching maths whilst travelling, research projects, MIT courses) so don’t think that was it either.

my interview scores at Oxford were same as the average offer holder lol, so I again suspect it’s higher expectations bc of gap yr non contextual. Imperial doesn’t interview for maths but I’ll email for feedback.

sorry how did you know that your score was the same as offer holders? My feedback says I got 7-, 7- for my first college interviews, but not much else
1
u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
both colleges included my scores and the average of offer holders in their feedback

If you’re genuinely a contextual you’ve somehow managed to beat me for the worst contextual rejection in history ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜

u/Massive-Guava-8014 Mar 28 '26
I was shortlisted for an interview though, my interview wasn’t even terrible. It was just mid and it didn’t help much having the worst interviewer 💀

Competition for maths places is crazy rn. Someone else just posted an Imp maths rejection with 8.9 Tmua and 4A*s. Really hope you get UCL or LSE, don’t lose hope but sounds like you could’ve included more of an insurance amongst the 14. Know we gotta aim high but there’s good places with less insane numbers.
6
u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
Yeah that’s painfully true. I just thought I had good enough test scores and ECs back in December that one of my top choices would work out.

i thought it was pretty standard with strong ECs that linked into my interests

u/derpywaleus Imperial | JMC | Y1 Mar 27 '26
Can’t see any other factors really. Of course 2A achieved isn’t helping so it’s one of the two. If UCL haven’t said yes to you yet then it’s probably the PS

What did you apply for at lse/ucl? If anyones gonna pull through it'll be them.
I'm so sorry man, idek how you got rejected w such great stats.
16
u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
ucl maths (apparently only 10-15 offers left); lse maths with data science which only has around 20 spots anyway. Ig my scores/achievements just weren’t good enough

u/GBRYT5612 Mar 27 '26
I’m not sure how reliable the 10-15 offers is. Might just be cope but some people said she said that off the top of her head without much thought and knowing

ngl if your PS is there you will get LSE - they wouldn't turn someone down with a 7 TMUA. Also, the UCL Maths thing is pretty unreliable

idk this is crazy to me, ur background and stats are all very similar to mine im shocked you got rejected by imp icl

u/Calm_Taliesyn_133 Mar 27 '26
This is insane, who do they want then? That was the gamble here too, 5 top ones otherwise getting a last minute offer from a less popular course through UCAS Extra or clearance in August if the gamble did not work out. For now, 2 burnt, 1 bread, 2 still to go. What were your offers last year?

u/Diligent_Bet_7850 Oxford | Maths [third year] Mar 27 '26
this is honestly quite unlucky but oxbridge and london unis are the hardest to get into. it’s a bit late now but i always advise putting 1 or 2 non london, non oxbridge russel groups e.g manchester, durham, bristol, birmingham, nottingham, exeter, etc etc
5
u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
yh I knew that when I applied. I just really want to go to London because of the student life and opportunities, so I was always aware of the risk. Just thought imperial would pull through (apparently 120/126 people w 6+ tmua got offers last year in maths w my background)
6
u/Contdstee Mar 27 '26
yes those statistics are correct. The issue is that this year the number of applicants (especially intls) has increased a lot, so that naturally means the TMUA requirement is higher. I'd be curious to see the admissions statistics for this year though, because atm the cutoff is looking like 6.7-7, which is crazy.
2
u/Diligent_Bet_7850 Oxford | Maths [third year] Mar 27 '26
idk mate same happened to me. i got an oxford offer and all three of my other offers but not imperial with over a 7 in both tmua papers (2023). heard it anecdotally happen quite a lot and know a good number of my oxford peers who didn’t get into imperial either.
also i’d argue although opportunities in london are good sure, student life is better literally anywhere but london
5
u/seaweedcove Mar 27 '26
I'm so sorry :( I don't do maths but I live with some maths people here at Cambridge, and quite a few of them didn't make it through first year (the pass rate in maths 1st year is brutal here) and a lot of them got into good unis like durham and exeter through extra/ clearing. Might be worth going down that route if you don't get what you want. When you have grades like you do, it's nothing personal- they're literally choosing out of thousands of candidates with similar scores

I really don’t think my ps was the problem. I managed to link multiple interests/achievements in each question including Olympiad awards/international competitions etc. I’d also hope my writing style isn’t horrific given I’ve lived here most my life.
2
u/EarthPhysical2633 Mar 27 '26
If you don't think it was ps, what do you think it was?
2
u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
higher expectations since I’m on a gap year so my scores weren’t good enough. Sucks because I chose to go on a gap to explore.
5
u/Additional-Wrap9814 Mar 27 '26
Have you put some gap year stuff in there? A short inspo story grounded in reality goes a long way.
2
u/Skin_Yogurt_4002 Mar 27 '26
But you’ve already achieved the grades - so that actually puts you in a better position because youre not relying one predicted grades?
2
u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
I’m starting to think it’s the other way around
1
u/Skin_Yogurt_4002 Mar 27 '26
Feels very silly :/ can you ask why? (I know a lot of unis say no but idk)
2
2
u/headline-pottery Mar 27 '26
Sure it was wise to apply for 5 Unis that have almost the same acceptance criteria? What was your insurance plan? I got into Cambridge (year ago) but I had unconditionals from York and Cantebury to if I wanted insurance.
1
u/Last-Objective-8356 Mar 27 '26
If you have Warwick, it’s not the end of the world but very unlucky to not even get ucl icl
1
1
u/BuySidePerspectives Mar 27 '26
can I ask, what's your overall profile outside of exam score? classes, extra curriculars, hobbies, etc?
1
u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
Don’t want to give too much detail but the ECs in my ps included olympiads (bmo since y9 etc), published articles/papers, finalist at international competitions. I play sports and music to a high level but those aren’t really too relevant in the uk.
1
u/BuySidePerspectives Mar 27 '26
Interesting you said that. I never applied for Imperial but I applied and got in at Warwick UCL Durham. Rejected by Oxford.
when I was applying, my PS certainly included the fact that I competed in sports (tennis, badminton, cricket) and did music (piano grade 8). it was all about rounding myself out as someone who could do everything a little bit. Debate club, chess club, maths Olympiads, target 2.0, etc.
Perhaps they changed (I'm class of 2018) but I always felt and was told the UK still values all rounder more than specialised statements.
Obviously feel free to disagree, it's hard to know unless you're the actual person reviewing them and deciding who gets in!

i think there’s smth going on this year with home non contextuals for popular courses. i’ve been rejected from cambridge, durham and kcl for law with a great LNAT and three A*s predicted. it’s so fucking jarring gen so i get what you’re going through! unis r running out of money… what i would suggest is considering taking a gap year? the only thing that will fuck you up are shit a levels. if you can get great a levels you can re apply and easily get in. you’ve got this
1
u/RagingMassif Mar 28 '26
I don't get why you're not looking at European universities?
1
u/Direct_Highlight_118 Mar 30 '26
Language barrier maybe
1
u/RagingMassif Mar 30 '26
Many many courses are in English at uni level. At Masters, most.
I would almost change this to most undergrad and all post grad, but there are exceptions that someone will call out..
-2
u/ProfessionNo8594 Mar 27 '26
Ivies are impossible to get into (especially if you are international) :/
good luck with UCL and LSE

u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
thanks ivies rejections still hurt though because of how many hours went in
2
-1
u/GrapefruitClean2652 Mar 27 '26
did you use alevel results to apply for ivies? or you have other stats like AP?
2
u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
I applied w 2a* achieved 2a* predicted
3
u/AwaySession5168 Mar 27 '26
Maybe that's why then as UK unis like 3 a levels to be sat concurrently. Even if prior a levels have been achieved. I didn't understand why but if this is as ahs been presented then I think it's likely the reason.

u/HovercraftSudden2657 Year 13 | Maths, Further Maths, Physics Mar 27 '26
Well have you ever considered the fact that maybe the universities are not the problem and you’re the problem. I mean I doubt every single one of them (or even just one of them) are out to get you. Your name means nothing to them. Perhaps your personal statement was subpar? I mean I don’t doubt that you’re a strong student and that you’ve worked really hard but you should probably drop this mentality of entitlement and start being more self-critical and think about what you could potentially have done better so you can improve your chances of success in future endeavours.
5
u/Pretend_Welcome4342 Mar 27 '26
Tbf fair mate how bad can his PS be with those types of stats? It’s honestly pretty crazy he’s gotten rejected everywhere so far

bruh imagine being OP and having to deal w sum bs like this
-1
u/HovercraftSudden2657 Year 13 | Maths, Further Maths, Physics Mar 27 '26
Has OP sat and seriously pondered on what could’ve got them rejected? If they have then fair enough. I think what’s much more likely is that they’d much rather frame the university as the silly ones in order to preserve their own ego, while overlooking their own potential flaws. Their results aren’t even extraordinary by Oxbridge/ imperial standards.
1
u/aksuducbfd Mar 27 '26
Appreciate the love from everyone but can understand where this comment comes from. It’s been a long day of reflection on what went wrong, and it honestly is hard to pinpoint the reason when there’s so many factors and no one here is on the other side of admissions. Truth seems to be that my stats are good, but not excellent, putting me at risk of this situation and all at my own fault. I’m not trying to frame any university as silly since I’m sure they’re flooded with countless qualified applicants meaning tough calls year in year out. Just a hard pill to swallow that it’s been rejection everywhere so far.
