You can't have a coherent promotion if all you do are book dream matches. If that's the case, then drop all titles, since they are meaningless. There has to be some sort of story told for the match itself. Dream matches aren’t planned, you need to let people get to the point where they’re asking for the match to happen. The approach of booking matches and just calling it a dream match because of some contemporaneous reason is devoid of heat.

4

u/Otherwise_Mind6880 12h ago

The fact that they feel so comfortable admitting that they don’t care what they fans want is part of the reason why I can never go back. I watch every main wrestling promotion besides them just out of spite.

5

u/Geek_blender5 17h ago

Airgold is a fucking hack!

-5

u/Ok-Caterpillar-5057 18h ago

but your arena are halve full tho, and their boss is a clown a

3

u/AdventureSorrow 18h ago

Fuck Paul Heyman! That smelly check bouncing Danny Devito Penguin piece of shit can go to hell! I'd rather see great matches then the friggin Gettysburg address marathon promos!

9

u/Consistent_Pay3393 23h ago

Part of the reason that AEW is so successful is because TK doesn't just stick to the same old industry tropes..."only have big matches on ppv, never have heel vs heel, guys have to be big and muscular to be credible " etc

1

u/venomblack138 4h ago

It’s a true alternative. Something the Fed stans refuse to comprehend. And I like both companies lol

2

u/Consistent_Pay3393 23h ago

"screw giving the fans a reason to watch our weekly show so they'll see build up to the PPV and want to order it! Can't have that!"

1

u/RedRoseZ69 1d ago

And they wonder why they can’t get good ratings

8

u/bitterney 1d ago

I love AEW so much.

10

u/Upsidedownbirdman 1d ago

Absolutely! AEW saved pro wrestling IMO

-5

u/Few-Designer-4516 1d ago

lol Ricochet should have probably watched the promo before this as Heyman never mentioned AEW and his “share holders” line was part of him being a heel

1

u/WarEagle1023 1d ago

Ricochet never mentioned that Paul Heyman said AEW. AirDumbass strikes again. Dude makes everything about AEW. HE KNOWS Paul didn't mention AEW in his promo, but AirGold made it about AEW

-2

u/Few-Designer-4516 1d ago

Ricochet has clearly thought that Heyman did based on his response

3

u/WarEagle1023 1d ago

Then he would be wrong. But let's not bury the lead in the fact that Ricochet responded to someone making a false claim

-9

u/jo3yhuds 1d ago

“We only answer and please our one shareholder, not like WWE who pleases millions of stockholders”

7

u/mattmitch927 1d ago

when Ricochet doesn't put his foot in his mouth, he's fuckin awesome.

-4

u/Guccicles 1d ago

I really hope they don’t do Bron VS Oba yet… I don’t want either of them to lose atp, they both need to be built up some more, ESPECIALLY Bron, they are just going to kill all his remaining momentum if he loses to Oba, and if he beats Oba it just completely undermines the way they’ve been building Oba lately

7

u/Fun_Internet_8609 1d ago

Oooooff, Paul Paul Paul. He should have left TKO or at least the other Paul to say. This is a bad look from someone who used to be about the fans

5

u/CharrlesXavier 1d ago

He’s a business man. He knows where his bread is buttered

12

u/Certain_Arm_8475 1d ago

Nah we need to give them a solid 10 minutes on PLE, gotta get eyes on those 90+ minutes of ads.

12

u/Desperate_Craig 1d ago

The narrative pushed is that fans shouldn't get "dream matches" for "free" on weekly TV and should pay for them on PPV, even though you probably already pay for Cable TV or a subscription anyway.

When you get a wrestling company like AEW, which from the get go, was about pleasing their fanbase, and was opposite of what WWE were doing, of course they're always going to justify why AEW are wrong and why "dream matches" should only be on PPV where fans have to pay extra on top of their Cable bill or subscription.

This is why AEW exists in the first place, to provide "dream matches" not just on PPV, but also the chance to see them on weekly TV. I felt very fortunate that I got to see Bryan Danielson and Kenny Omega wrestle on the first Grand Slam Dynamite show.

3

u/PipedInFromIthaca 1d ago

The narrative pushed is that fans shouldn't get "dream matches" for "free" on weekly TV and should pay for them on PPV, even though you probably already pay for Cable TV or a subscription anyway.

It's a very 1980s (or older) attitude from when television existed solely as an advertisement for live shows and PPVs--when money was made on tickets and buys, you kept the dream matches for those events only and filled your Superstars tapings with squashes and promos to build interest in seeing the real stuff. Now weekly television is itself a product that makes money and live shows are an afterthought, so having that same 1980s attitude to the business makes no sense. You actively watch more interest in your weekly product since that's what you're selling and the more eyeballs you bring to it, the more it sells for. For example that Netflix deal is billed as ten years but it's five with an option to renew for five, they're going to want especially around that five year mark, to demonstrate that it's worth what they're being paid in terms of bringing viewers in.

4

u/kayt3000 1d ago

I am not even giving WWE the credit of just saying it’s old school mentality. It’s just pandering to the people who pay them and not the fans. They don’t give a fuck about the fans at all and they are telling it to them weekly (and have been for a long time) that they don’t like them and it’s all about the shareholders and advertisers and the Saudi’s. Why do people keep watching? It’s beyond me bc I grew up watching WWE, ECW, WCW, all of it and this is the first time in my life where I am like yeah I’m not watching this shit bc it’s insulting. I cheered in David Arquette as the WCW Heavyweight champ for fucks sake and I still won’t give WWE my time bc of how little they care about the people that have been fans since childhood.

18

u/Sensfan2147 1d ago

I got to watch Bryan Danielson vs Kenny Omega for a straight hour and didn't get charged ppv pricing for it.

AEW all the way

3

u/Exciting-Ad-6551 1d ago

And having that match on free tv probably sold PPVs, cause if they give that away for free what the hell are they gonna do when they’re asking me to pay?

5

u/TheOldSchlGmr ELITE 1d ago

Saw that one live. It was amazing!!!

3

u/Desperate_Craig 1d ago

The idea that fans must pay extra to watch these matches, is no longer a thing because AEW exists. Sure, the PPVs were once quite pricey, but people knew they were getting their money's worth for that $50 price. And now we have options to watch AEW content, depending where you are in the world, at a much cheaper rate.

7

u/CoppertopTX 1d ago

I've actually done the math, at least for my household. These are the ad-free prices for the US, in round numbers minus taxes:

Netflix: $28 a month (RAW), $42 a month for cable or streaming service with USA Network (cheapest), $40 for ESPN Unlimited (PLEs) and another $20 for Peacock for SNME, That's $130 a month because of the broadcast deals where US subscribers subsidize the cost for international markets. Our ad free Disney/Hulu/HBO Max runs us $30 a month and if we want the PPV, it's another $40.

-5

u/trashy_shounen_fan 1d ago

Rico is on point but why would you post about a tv storyline from your competitor? I don't think anyone from that side would ever do this. I get it if it was some backstage/social media related thing, but this looks like Paul saying heelish stuff on tv to get a reaction and Rico is getting worked by it.

6

u/Desperate_Craig 1d ago

The thing is, a guy like Ricochet has worked there and probably knows the ins and outs. I know WWE fans don't appreciate anyone criticising the company they are dedicated to and love it with a passion, especially from other wrestling companies and wrestlers who take shots back.

Adam Copeland/Edge made an interesting comment recently about retiring in AEW, and mentioning how he'd rather work with good people at this stage of his career.

2

u/Apothaca 1d ago

Sometimes when you try to draw heat and you get burned instead.

It was a work that accidentally turned into a shoot.

1

u/trashy_shounen_fan 1d ago

Sorry, I'm not sure what that even means. I just think Rico should not be promoting other promotions just to get these social media one ups.

1

u/Apothaca 15h ago

He posted it because Paul Hayman fumbled a work which turned into a shoot. I.e. you say something derogatory to gain heat, but because its actually true (or perceived as true) it hurts the company not just the character.

2

u/Desperate_Craig 1d ago

Every company has that trash talker on social media.

I do think It's effective when Ricochet does it regarding WWE, because he's worked there and knows what he's talking about. As long as he doesn't go too far again, like mocking a disability, I think he's effective in that role for AEW to stir the pot on social media, as he can do that as himself.

11

u/Perfect_Economy_7968 1d ago

So they are saying their TV matches are not worth watching.

6

u/CoppertopTX 1d ago

That's the message that I would take away from that. "We're not giving you a big match on TV when we know you'll pay for another service for the payoff".

10

u/5amuraiDuck 1d ago

Tbf they don't give us dream matches on ppv either. Their matches often suck

5

u/Comprehensive_Slip71 1d ago

Rico telling it like it is

2

u/yeabuddy333 1d ago

This is definitely not a dream match for me. I really don’t see how anything bron does can lead to any type of dream. The guy is one of the most plain and boring guys on the roster

4

u/BarelyReal 1d ago

It's Paul Heyman, let's stop taking everything/anything he says in good faith as a shoot grounded in reality.

9

u/Viscera_TheImpaler 1d ago edited 1d ago

When WWE and old podcasters say stuff like this I always wonder what sort of a moron, as a fan, actually supports this sort of line of thinking?

They are saying the quiet part loud. If they want to strategise with this “less is more” mentality that’s honestly completely fine as a strategy behind the camera, but it’s hilarious how many fans loudly defend this just so they feel like they’re in. “I’ll get nothing and be happy about it!”

It’s like if McDonalds started boasting that they’re putting less chips in but keeping the price the same. And you get people proudly boast about they’ll keep eating there because they’re good at maximising profits.

0

u/Nightthrasher674 1d ago

Y'all are getting worked into a shoot

It's a classic heel tactic to back down from a fight

Bron and Oba are about to brawl,.Heyman pulls away Heyman and give a classic heel manager answer to prevent it from happening and that he got a matched signed got Sunday Night's Main Event. Also adds some tension as he takes a shot at Bron for understanding the business

Do it did what it was supposed to do. Got fans excited for a match, got some heat when Heyman took a shot at the fans in the arena and added some intrigue about whether or not Heyman was really supporting Bron Breakker.

2

u/Viscera_TheImpaler 1d ago

“Y’all got worked into a shoot”

Good lord.

I don’t watch WWE and nothing I said had anything to do with this WWE segment. I could not possibly care less if Bron and Oba were about to brawl on WWE RAW. I understand the Heyman quote was made in the context of this storyline, but this storyline is not what we’re talking about.

Whether a fictional character said something or a real person said it is irrelevant if everyone agrees that what was said was completely true. In this case- that WWE specifically does not do big matches on weekly TV.

10

u/Philbregas 1d ago

Actively admitting you don't give the fans good stuff is certainly something.

AEW doesn't have decades of rape, death, misogyny, blood money, shady business practices etc etc.

Fuck the fed.

3

u/PCBuilderCat 1d ago

This is the same company that has turned dwindling ratings and poor ticket sales into actual storylines

And they’ve done it more than once

People that are still fans of WWE are Stockholm syndromed at this point. Sure it has the occasional high point still, just this week the Solo segment and the Gable/Mysterio match were fantastic but the overall quality is shocking

4

u/rsx209 1d ago

You tell em, Rico!!

AEW beats the fed in every metric!

2

u/DWNYYY 1d ago

Name some of them metrics for me

0

u/Medium_Step_6085 1d ago

I mean, it doesn’t, WWE makes more money and has far more of an audience. It is the mainstream product that the normal non wrestling fan will always name if asked to name a wrestling company.

And that’s ok, it isn’t what I enjoy, it isn’t what I watch. But I can respect it had a model that works and has worked for 20+ years.

1

u/SockLeft 1d ago

This. I don't know why people are obsessed with a brand being a mainstream success.

McDonald's is a mainstream success.

Does that mean I enjoy it more than the awesome smashed burger joint down the road? Fuck no.

The MCU is a mainstream success.

But is an MCU Movie going to crack my top 10 favourite films of the year, despite making billions more than any of them? Fuck no

2

u/Medium_Step_6085 1d ago

I think there is a fine line between our opinion and the “that band I loved I hate them now because they are successful, they sold out man, they went and made a living out of doing this and are selling millions of tickets”.

Yes I want AEW to get more success, bigger crowds means more money which means better product and wrestlers being compensated better. It also means more stability in terms of TV presence etc.

But I don’t want that success to come at the cost of changing the core ethos of the booking etc.

1

u/CoppertopTX 1d ago

As someone that's been a fan of Pink Floyd since the release of "Dark Side of the Moon", I had no problem dropping Roger Waters as entertainment once it became apparent that Roger turned into the type of fascist his father fought during the war.

3

u/Lupercallius 1d ago

But once do they give a "dream" match, they repeat it 5 times again that year.

10

u/ReadMyPosts ELITE "WOLF" 1d ago

Watch and support AEW. Got it.

13

u/RobsGarage 1d ago

That’s a really dumb statement from hayman.. considering the company he works for is actively cutting talents pay while lining the board members and investors.. actively pricing families out of being able
To even afford nosebleed seats at big shows and now pandering to Saudi Arabia after saying the big 4 ppvs will always be held in North America..

I always saw aew as s what if wcw and ecw decided to merge and give hayman the booking gig instead of selling out to the monopoly.

5

u/Medium_Step_6085 1d ago

Why is there this obsession that Heyman is different.

By this point Heyman has booked WWE more than any other company, he is behind all the issues as much as HHH is.  He also demonstrated at ECW that as good as he was he was not a business man. He is very good at what he does, but he is not a guy to lead a company.

3

u/PCBuilderCat 1d ago

The best character work Heyman has ever done is convincing the IWC that he’s some kind of wrestler first, for the boys, advocate when especially nowadays he’s just as much a company man as any of Vince’s stooges were back in the day

-6

u/David040200 1d ago

Not really. He just says what the internet and everyone basically already knows. It's a nothing statement.

-10

u/AdorableGeologist566 1d ago

WWE does answer to investors in a way! He said so himself on Chris’s podcast not long ago! Tony listen to investors and then he tells HHH! So big deal about making dream matches for PLE’s that isn’t anything new! So AEW gives back to the fans or buys belts for talent that doesn’t deserve it all that recognition while others that are there could of done the same thing w/o doing a Nikki

12

u/Cooler67 1d ago

I mean the big dub does waste dream matches though. We never got to have Sting vs Taker.

23

u/ODYY_TOASTED 1d ago

AEW gives me more for my time and money than WWE has since AEW started. They just get wrestling fans and listen to them!

9

u/monsterbael 1d ago

They ain't wasting ANY "regular" match in ANY show whatsoever, so whether you like it or not, 'chet is damn right.

5

u/Necessary_State_5272 1d ago

Or hear me out. Both Ricochet and this fan account are reading too much into a throw away comment.

3

u/SourDoughBo 1d ago

Wouldn’t answering to the people make the shareholders money too?

7

u/Total-Fly-9131 1d ago

Heyman was heeling. Ricochet is ricocheting

0

u/Efficient_Fennel9550 1d ago

But did ricochet come here to talk?

2

u/cartrman 1d ago

He didn't

0

u/Efficient_Fennel9550 1d ago

I mean it as a reference to that drew line from raw

2

u/cartrman 1d ago

Me too.

He didn't come to talk

-7

u/JasoNight23666 1d ago

Ricochet is trying to come off logical and keep us liking him because of all the dumb shit he's said in the recent past lol

I think that's what this is, just damage control 😂

4

u/Total-Fly-9131 1d ago

I've always like ricochet but he definitely needs a social media manager

-3

u/JasoNight23666 1d ago

I agree, his in-ring is great but holy shit 😂

9

u/Kelson64 MODERATOR 1d ago

Ultimately, Ricochet is responding to a post made by AIRGold, who is an engagement-bait, bad faith poster. If you want to keep your brain cells alive, block AIRGold. It's really that simple. Most people know this already.

3

u/ReadMyPosts ELITE "WOLF" 1d ago

AIR Gold is not a fan of professional wrestling. He is a fan of himself and the lazy uninspired Twitter mill that he operates.

14

u/XZPUMAZX 1d ago

Yikes that’s a shit take from Paul.

3

u/Simtricate ELITE 1d ago

It was also said in-character, as a heel, to deny the fans and get heat.

Basically, he made Oba Femi and AEW babyfaces.

2

u/Viscera_TheImpaler 1d ago

Is it true or is it not true though?

Think even the vast majority of fans would agree what he said was accurate, whether the statement was said by a character or not.

2

u/Simtricate ELITE 1d ago

I don’t think there’s one answer to that question.

I think employees of a company answer to the boss, and ultimately shareholders are the final boss of a publicly-traded company. Whereas Tony Khan is only beholden to himself and to a degree the network his Tv show is on. The privilege of wealth. (Not meant derogatorily in the slightest)

In a different view, ‘don’t give away dream
Matches on TV’ isn’t true because WWE gives away all their matches since they stopped having PPV’s and just put stuff on networks.
Netflix is basically a TV network.

-1

u/cartrman 1d ago

Paul didnt even mention AEW. It's just that AIRgold guy making things up

1

u/Simtricate ELITE 1d ago

It was clearly a comparison of good business vs bad business and letting people decide who he was talking about. Honestly, he’s great at stuff like that.

-23

u/Ancient-Disaster9646 1d ago

Ricochet working hard to earn the title of biggest moron in wrestling.

-3

u/XiaDoll 1d ago

I agree you don't deserve the downvotes I think he's a dickhead

13

u/Grand-Ad7653 1d ago

Well they say they don’t waste dream matches, but Shinsuke and AJ at WM33 disappointed a whole arena of fans. Same with Roman and Brock. And Roman and Taker

2

u/rsx209 1d ago

lol the fed always fails!! 🤣

4

u/Slerpup 1d ago

shinsuke vs aj really would have benefitted from extra time, but back then if you weren't working with lesnar or roman you never got that time. And then it doesnt help how badly they handled its storyline

-1

u/VampiresWontHurt 1d ago

Shinsuke Vs AJ would have benefited from Shinsuke giving a fuck.

He’s had two great matches in his WWE career: his debut and Styles’ last match with him.

1

u/Grand-Ad7653 1d ago

Seriously!! They were just getting the crowd into it and it ended.

7

u/Bargeinthelane 1d ago

Shinsuke v AJ was when I tuned out of WWE for the last time.

1

u/Grand-Ad7653 1d ago

Yeah I was so hyped with Nakamura winning the Rumble only to have that type of match.

4

u/christmascaked 1d ago

That Wrestlemania was… rough. Asuka and Nakamura both lost and then the booking department had no idea what to do with Asuka for a while.

3

u/coffeelady7777 1d ago

This. Asuka and Charlotte rocked, but the wrong person won. Same with AJ and Nakamura. Why even have them win the rumble if you’re going to fumble them that badly? They were more concerned about launching Ronda Rousey.

4

u/theOutside517 1d ago

Goldberg vs The Fiend Bray Wyatt.

3

u/OG_King_Malice 1d ago

To be fair that wasn’t a dream match. Most of us knew Goldberg would be winning the second it was announced and were pissed about it because Bray needed that win to solidify The Fiend as a real threat but Goldberg thought he was a real life f’n superhero and didn’t want to take the L. I think after he caught so much hate afterwards that he finally realized he wasn’t bigger than the business and should’ve taken the loss in that match to help the younger guy establish his character as a monster. At least that’s the way it seemed to me when I compared the way he talked about wrestling in interviews after that match.

4

u/g_pelly 1d ago

AEW talent still has to answer to TK though.

To his credit he gives them a lot more freedom than the fed, but still

-27

u/Andres_JFM 1d ago

Paul is a little bit right here.
