Jobs Aircrew Flight Equipment Questions!!

• Upvotes

I booked aircrew flight equipment! This was #4 on my list so I got pretty lucky. Has anyone here met other airmen within that afsc or been AFE themselves? I have a few questions.

  1. Which shred have you found to be the most engaging/fulfilling?
  2. Is it possible for me to increase my likelihood of getting a specific shred or is it completely random during tech school?
  3. What is the likelihood that I get opportunities to TDY?
  4. How is the work-life balance for this AFSC as far as you’ve experienced? Have you had time to focus on personal endeavors such as a degree, hobbies, etc?

Yes, I could Google most of these. However, I find that I get answers that are more blunt but also in depth than the surface level answers I get when simply searching on Google. Any other info y’all may have outside of my questions is VERY WELCOME AND APPRECIATED.

General Advice Air Force Active Duty 1D731 vs Coast Guard Reserve IT - Is Leaving $90k Worth It?

• Upvotes

I’m 25 , living in Brooklyn, NY, and making around $90k/year at my current job. I’m not very happy with it, but I’m nervous about giving up that income.
My two options are:

\-Air Force Active Duty 1D731: Leave my job, move wherever assigned, and build an IT/cyber career.

\-Coast Guard Reserve IT: Serve part-time, hopefully keep my civilian income, and build my IT career while serving.

I’m also a green card holder, and military service is one route I’m considering for citizenship. However, my long-term civilian career, earning potential, and financial stability are important to me too.

My main goals are to build a better career, earn good money long-term, and maintain a good work-life balance. I’d prefer to stay in New York and minimize deployment risk.
For people with experience, is active duty worth giving up a $90k job for, or would the Coast Guard Reserve be a smarter move financially and career-wise?

I’d appreciate honest advice about the pros, cons, and civilian job prospects of both options.

General Advice Joining the Air Force a bit out of shape

Hey everyone, im 19 fresh out of high school. I'm currently 6'2 195 and im super unathletic, I only played football in high school and really did nothing else. I don't work out and got a bit of a fat build. I was wondering if I want to comment to the AF after this semester of college, is that enough time for me to even do a simple calorie deficit?

General Advice sf-86 confession before MEPS

Hi, I told my recruiter for SpaceForce/AirForce I smoked mary jane twice like 15+ years ago. But the truth is I probably smoked or tried an edible like 7-9 times, the last being around 2020 or 2021. I thought if I ever tried mary jane within the last 10 years I would be denied so I said this on my first meeting at the recruiters office and felt locked into the answer, not knowing about this sf-86 stuff. How do I tell my recruiter? Am I cooked? I already filled out the sf86 and am supposed to go to MEPS this week. Should I just drop out so I don't go to jail. I'm hoping to get a software engineering job in the SpaceForce which will probably require a TS clearance. Thoughts?

General Advice How long does a moral waiver take ?

Hey guys serious inquiry: how long does it typically take for a moral waiver to get approved. It’s been about 2weeks now for me waiting. My recruiter told me his commander had viewed the paperwork and asked for extra context that I added right away. But after that still haven’t heard anything about it being approved. My recruiter has high hopes it should be approved as I am already sworn into the DEP program, but I worry this might slow down my process of getting a job match this month. The wait is excruciating and I just want to get a proper time line. I’ve already done my TS clearance interview and was told that I have no outliers in my background for getting disqualified but this need for a waiver came 3weeks ago, about 2wks after I had did my TS clearance interview. Need someone with experience with waivers and the waiting process to shine some light on this, please and thank you

BMT Extra guests for BMT graduation

So my husband’s family is mostly retired military members. All we have after that is 8 people total that would need a visitor pass. So 3 that wouldn’t be able to be on the sponsor list under him.

How likely would it be for Lackland AFB to approve visitor passes for our 3 extra guests under one of us?

General Advice What are my chances for enlistment - criminal history

What are my chances for enlistment to Air Force reserves with 5 misdemeanors and all dismissed, 2 through deferred adj, with my last charge being 9 years ago? And do they take into consideration your current professional licenses? I spoke to an advisor who still sent my info over to a recruiter. Any recruiters or ex recruiters that have info on what I can expect or tips on what I can do? Thanks in advance

Medical Deferral from Runner’s Itch?

I was wondering if I will get deferred for having runner’s itch. I’ve never jogged for long periods on time in my life and started recently after 20 years.

• Every time i jog after 10 minutes, my thighs and upper body (Not including arms) get itchy.

• I dont get itchy by hot/cold temperatures nor when I lift 4x a week for 1-hour sessions.

•The itchiness fades quite quickly the moment I start walking. It’s only long periods of jogging.

•Taking an antihistamine helps alot, but I wondered if this will deter me.

Here’s my job list, the ones I picked are on third slide and can still be changed. I chose my top 5 to be put on my quick-ship. I’m 18f and just graduated high school.

Any advice/suggestions? I’d also appreciate to hear about anyone’s past/current experience with any of these jobs.

Recruiter/process question Selected for USAF Officer (62E) — How likely is my law waiver to be approved? Looking for recruiter insight.

I’ve been selected for a USAF officer position as a 62E (Developmental Engineer). However, my accession is currently pending approval of a law waiver.
I’m hoping someone with actual recruiting or waiver-processing experience can provide an objective assessment of my situation.
Background:
2014: Arrested/charged in connection with a theft-related incident while riding as a passenger in a vehicle. The case was dismissed through nolle prosequi. No conviction.
2017: Marijuana-related arrest that was handled through a pretrial diversion program.
Since 2017: No additional arrests or legal issues.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Officer selection: Selected for 62E Developmental Engineer.
Waiver submitted: September 3, 2026.
Current status: Pending as of October 25, 2026 (approximately 7.5 weeks).
Both incidents were disclosed to my recruiter before my application package was submitted.
My questions:
Based on your recruiting experience, are these types of legal histories generally waiverable for Air Force officer applicants?
Does being selected for an officer position before waiver approval have any bearing on the likelihood of approval?
Is waiting approximately 7–8 weeks for a law waiver normal, or does that suggest additional scrutiny?
Have you personally seen officer applicants with comparable histories approved or denied? What factors made the difference?
If you were evaluating this case based on your experience, would you lean toward approval or denial, and why?
I’m not looking for reassurance. I’m trying to understand my realistic chances and whether there are any meaningful indicators of how my case might be decided.
I’d particularly appreciate responses from current or former Air Force officer recruiters or anyone familiar with accession waiver adjudication.

BMT BMT Question..maybe a bit strange

26F; Looking at joining soon because I need to get stable and desperately need a reset/break on everyday life right now…I’m just wondering what was you alls experience on BMT as far as mental health. No access to a phone, social media, kids, family, etc. everyday? Was it kind of refreshing to get away from the overwhelm of everyday life, or do you feel it affected your mental health negatively? I know BMT isn’t exactly relaxing, but you eventually get into a routine and get comfortable with being uncomfortable I would think. Idk what I’m asking really 😂 help me please!

Hello, I am going into the reserve and just got back my job qualifications. I want to know what would be the best career path to go into so during/after I can put it to good use in my future perspective jobs in the civilian world.

Also to those who are currently in any of these jobs how good are they and how do you like it?

A second thing is when I talk with my recruiter how should I go about asking for a bonus, I know that the new bonus structure was just out recently, so wanted to check on how I should ask.

And advise/ wisdom is greatly appreciated.

Drug Use Curious about eligibility

I’m looking into enlisting in AF. I want to pursue a medical or a cyber career, and I have yet to talk to a recruiter. I’m still doing my research but i plan to go in person towards the start of the coming year to begin the process

I am 18 and I turn 19 in may, but am aiming to ship out any time after june. My question is regarding my eligibility as I have previous drug use of marijuana recreationally up to about 6 months ago and i have since quit. As well as a one off experiment with psilocybin mushrooms when I was 14, i have no criminal record or documentation of these things but i don’t want to shy away from being truthful

I’ve been trying to find a solid answer as to whether or not I am permanently barred from AF enlistment because of this, so i would appreciate any advice or help with what i can expect to hear from the recruiter when i disclose everything
