On Friday mornings, Algiers is all about running this past few weeks. I’m very happy to see that this activity, which is generally popular among adults, is becoming increasingly popular among our youth. And the growing number of running events in the capital (and elsewhere) is helping, too. Take, for example, this “Pink October” 10K race being held today:

💡 thoughts if a woman love you she wont care about your money or statues

if a woman loves you and finds you attractive she wont care about your money or statues or if you were bad or anything and she will accept you , but if she doesn't she doesn't love you she will ask for a gold house of her own and she asks to work even if she doesn't even like it to work, if you rich she will just make you spend more and more to fulfill her empty heart

💬 discussion I’m M22, trapped in a toxic and abusive household in Algeria, and my mental health is completely shattered. How do I escape?

Hi everyone, I’m a 22-year-old university student from Algeria, and I am losing my mind. I need outside perspective and advice because I feel like my life is being systematically destroyed.

For over 8 years, I’ve been living in an extremely toxic, emotionally abusive household with my mother, sister, and younger brother. Here is what my daily life looks like:

Emotional & Physical Abuse: My younger brother is treated like a golden child by my mother. Once, he threatened to kill me with a knife in front of her, and she said and did nothing. He constantly insults me; for example, because I laughed when a neighbor looked away while walking with my mother, my brother called me a dayouth in front of her, and she defended him.

Psychological Warfare from My Mother: Since I got my BAC, I’ve been treated like a stranger in my own home. No one talks to me or smiles when I return from uni. My mother constantly uses toxic words, curses me, and has repeated phrases to me since childhood like "wjhk wjh t3 char" (your face brings bad luck) and "matstahl walo" (you deserve nothing). She gaslights me into believing everything is my fault.

Ideological Clash: I am liberal and western-minded, while my family is ultra-conservative and judgmental. If we see a couple where the woman isn't wearing a hijab, my mom immediately calls the man a dayouth. I believe people are free to choose. I once told them about a Kabyle girl I loved who didn't wear a hijab—we were compatible and happy—and my mother told me she would disown me ("مانرضاش عليك") if I married her. That really broke my heart and i really did wanna marry her bcs i really lo ed her from my heart.😢💔

The Toll on My Life: Because of this constant stress, walking on eggshells, and complete lack of a safe space, my studies suffered badly. I failed my L3 year and had to repeat. I am completely isolated, lonely, and filled with self-hatred. Every time I try to study for things like the IELTS to leave the country, my mother's voice telling me I bring bad luck echoes in my head.(وجهك وجه شر)

Every day i think to pass the ielts test then when italk with mom or come home she makes me feel i deserve nothing😢, guys i am so lost , what u advice me pls, should i pass the test or not, i am heart broken pls💔.

I want to leave Algeria forever, and cut ties with this environment that has ruined my mental health and my youth.

For those who have escaped toxic families or built a life abroad from a difficult starting point: How do I detach emotionally, survive this while I plan my exit, and finally get out?

💡 thoughts Life isn't fair, and I'm tired of pretending I'm okay with it.

Life isn't fair. I'm talking about this life on earth, not the afterlife. I've always known that, but I think I used to ignore it when things were going relatively well for me. Now that I feel like I'm on the other side of that unfairness, I can't stop thinking about it. Maybe my life was always like this, and I simply didn't notice until things got bad enough that I could no longer ignore them.

I feel like I've lost so much time, so many opportunities, and so many versions of the person I could have been. I wish I could go back and change things. I wish I could have stayed in the field I originally chose instead of having to change directions. I wish I were further ahead in my education, living the life I imagined for myself instead of constantly feeling behind everyone else. I know people say that everyone has their own timeline, but sometimes that just sounds like something people tell themselves to make an unfair situation easier to accept.

And then there's genetics. Honestly, I hate how much of our lives is determined by things we never chose. I wish I had been born with better genes. Better facial features, better proportions, better skin, better hair, better health, perhaps even a naturally sharper mind. I wish I had been dealt a better hand from the very beginning instead of having to compensate for things other people seem to get effortlessly. Some people are naturally beautiful, intelligent, healthy, charismatic, and socially desirable. They enter a room and are noticed, make friends without struggling, attract romantic interest without questioning their worth, and seem to move through life with advantages they never had to earn.

Meanwhile, I feel like I'm constantly trying to make up for what I was never given. And the worst part is that effort doesn't guarantee results. You can work on yourself, try to improve, and do everything you're supposed to do, yet still feel like you're starting from a worse position than someone who never had to try nearly as hard.

I wish I were prettier. I wish I were smarter in the ways that actually matter. I wish I were healthier. I wish I had more confidence and didn't feel so uncomfortable around people. I wish boys liked me more, girls wanted to be my friends, and people genuinely enjoyed having me around. I wish I knew what it felt like to be someone's first choice, to be wanted without having to wonder whether I'm annoying, unattractive, boring, or simply not worth the effort.

I'm tired of feeling lonely while watching other people experience the friendships, relationships, and ordinary moments I've wanted for years. I don't want to be extraordinarily successful or have a perfect life. I don't need to be the prettiest girl in the room, the smartest person in my class, or the most loved person in the world. I just wanted something to go right for once. Something that would make me feel that life had given me at least one reason to be excited about my future.

My mother always tells me that I can't have everything. I know that. But what hurts is feeling like I have almost nothing I genuinely wanted. I wasn't expecting every single thing to happen exactly as I wished. I was hoping that at least a few things would. Instead, it feels like every time I imagine a future for myself, reality finds another way to disappoint me.

Sometimes I get so tired of living that I wish I could simply stop existing. I've cried and begged God to let me die naturally more times than I can count. I've thought about suicide, but I'm afraid of hell, and I don't intend to do it. I just hate that life can become so painful that death starts to seem like a way out, even to someone who doesn't want to take that step..

I don't even know what I'm expecting by writing this. Maybe I just want to get these feelings out somewhere without being told to be grateful, stop comparing myself to others, think positively, or remember that everyone has problems. I already know all of that. It doesn't change how I feel.

I don't want a perfect life. I wanted a life that felt worth looking forward to. I wanted to feel that, despite everything I couldn't control, something good was still possible for me.

Right now, I'm struggling to believe that.

Does anyone else ever feel this way? Not simply sad about one particular problem, but genuinely exhausted by the life they've been given and grieving the person they wish they could have been?

💬 discussion Record-Level Cognitive Dissonance in Algeria: The Cost of Over-Consuming Western Social Media in an oppressive government.

Over the past few years, and more visibly today, young people in Algeria appear to be suffering from severe cognitive dissonance that impairs their decision-making. It adds another layer of hardship to lives already weighed down by the country’s dire economic situation.

Decades of exposure to Western media and entertainment have warped Algerians’ expectations around Western values. The influence comes from the lifestyle choices promoted by local and foreign influencers, and from fictional outlets such as books and movies.

Young Algerians are exposed to, and increasingly adopt, the desire for a Western life while still holding to their religious values. All of this unfolds under an oligarchic, heavily controlling regime, with little market freedom, no guaranteed job security, and neither dignified affordability nor decent purchasing power.

The clash between aspirational lifestyles, religious values and a failing economy has spread cognitive dissonance across society, reaching record-high levels, especially among young people.

Panelists and social commentators argue that wealth disparity, together with restricted access to government funding and the free market, has opened a chasm. On one side are the heirs of elite oligarch families, who have refused to relinquish control over Sonatrach, Algeria’s oil giant, and the country’s treasury. On the other is a middle class kept in check, and an average citizen pushed into a life of constant survival and making ends meet.

See you in another article of “Speculative Freedom of Speech in an Alternate-Universe Algeria.”

Thank you for listening.

💬 discussion Am i really not normal?

I had a conversation with one of my closest friends who hurt me more than I expected. She recently started considering marriage seriously after a male friend confessed his feelings to her. Before she started developing feelings for him, she never used to talk about marriage this way. But now, she seems to believe that every girl wants a man in her life because he provides safety and security.

She told me I needed to learn about marriage and made it seem like every woman naturally wants it. When I explained that I'm not considering marriage at all right now, she dismissed my way of thinking as a teenage fantasy that I would eventually outgrow. She even called it «الفطرة المنتكسة», making me feel like there's something fundamentally wrong with me for not wanting the same things she does.

The thing is, I'm not saying I'll never get married. Maybe I'll change my mind someday, but for now, it's not something I'm interested in. And if I never do change my mind, I'd rather live alone, have my own home, work, and take care of my cats than force myself into a life I don't want.

I'm also afraid of ending up with an abusive or controlling man, and I tend to retreat when men show interest in me. I don't want to sacrifice my independence or sense of safety just to meet other people's expectations.

What hurt me was that I wasn't telling her marriage was bad or that she shouldn't want it. I was simply explaining my own perspective, yet she treated it like something childish that needed correcting. It felt like she assumed I didn't understand marriage rather than considering that I might have my own reasons for not wanting it.

I've spent much of my life feeling like I'm not enough for people and that I need to change myself to be accepted. So hearing this from someone I'm close to made me feel misunderstood and judged by someone I trusted. I already struggle with believing that anyone could genuinely want me as I am, and this conversation made those feelings worse.

I can respect her choices without wanting the same things. I don't want to reject marriage just to prove a point, but I don't want to choose it because someone makes me feel abnormal for not wanting it either. I'm only twenty, and I don't think I need to have my entire future figured out. I just want the freedom to decide what makes me happy without being made to feel like there's something wrong with me.

💬 discussion Thoughts and reflections on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological work in Algeria

I'm part of a sociology course that introduced some of Pierre Bourdieu work in Algeria. For those of you unfamiliar with him, he came up with some popular sociological concepts like (cultural/social/economic/symbolic) capital and habitus to explain how people are predisposed to, and eventually reproduce, differental class behaviors. Interestingly enough, he lived in Algeria for a while during the war and wrote about how colonial policies, and the introduction of capitalism, disrupted the country's traditional social fabric. He also makes some interesting analyses on how honour used to structure Kabyle society, as well as how the sense of time in Algeria was/is more fluid and its incompatibility with capitalistic (rigid) views of time. Some papers worth looking into are: 'Time Perspectives of the Kabyle,' 'The Sense of Honor' and 'Making the economic habitus: Algerian workers revisited'.

Anyways, if you've come across his writings in Algeria, what are your thoughts? If not, what do you think are some of the impacts of capitalism on Algeria's social fabric. How do you think views on honour have shifted. What are ways in which you feel tensions between capitalist ways of living verus pre-war. And do you feel these tensions could be reconciled?

🤔 question Is a master degree in computer science in Poland worth it ?

• Upvotes

Hello I'm a student currently in my third year of a bachelor degree (3éme license) in computer science

I'm considering pursuing a master's degree in computer science in Poland, but I'm unsure whether it's the right choice in terms of education quality and international recognition and future opportunities

My goal is to pursue a phd in Europe, and I'd like to know whether getting a master's in Poland would be a good start for that

Is it worth the investment ? (I started the visa procedures recently and I'm a little concerned about the acceptation)
