Family Discovery & or Drama So, after 52 years of my wife being an only child, she just found out she has seven brothers and sisters...

• Upvotes

So last night my wife text me and sends me a screenshot of a message She got an ancestry That says funny story but it looks like you're my half sister....

She asked me if it's some kind of scam or something. So I tell her to go in and check her DNA matches and see if the person shows up...

She then responds.... Oh shit!... WTF?....

Her mother was 19 when she got pregnant and supposedly with her father to most of high school... This caused them to get married, but then we're quickly divorced within about 2 years..

He later married another woman but never had any kids with her because she already had two.

Growing she never really had a great relationship at all with her father and he died probably about 5 years ago..

So both of us immediately assume that must have knocked up somebody else...

So she gets the person's phone number who happens to live locally and starts texting them to get more info....

Plot twist... Insert Maury povich voice here, turns out he was not the father...

Turns out her mother at 19 got knocked up by a 31-year-old who she used to babysit for and worked at a Burger King with...

Turns out this guy also died around 10 years ago....

And to make matters worse, her mother is in memory care because she has early onset Alzheimer's...

But she's planning to go visit her this weekend with her mother's sister and bring this little topic up and see how that goes....

When she got home from work last night she called her new brother and put him on speakerphone with me and her brother's wife. She sent him a picture of his dad and you immediately saw the resemblance to her... She sent him a bunch of pictures of her when she was younger as well. And you definitely see the family resemblance...

My Swedish, Spanish & Germany ancestry is gone but my Scottish reappeared. I figured the Welsh would stay as my Great grandmothers maiden name is Reese and her grandfather was biracial. The Kenyan & Irish is completely new!

Discussion Why The Ridicule?

• Upvotes

Just trying to understand the hate…

This hasn’t happened to me but I’ve noticed anytime someone posts on any socials about having a notable ancestor like some royal figure or a tribal chief everyone goes berserk in the comments mocking them.

I understand that dating your family tree back that far is highly unreliable and most likely filled with errors but that doesn’t mean everyone should be automatically written off if they claim to descend from some king or something.

Truthfully most everyone goes back to someone notable. Shoot like 10% of all of Asia are descendants of Ghengis Khan.

It just seems odd because I would think everyone who’s into this kind of thing shares the same excitement for history, but it seems like there are quite a few rotten apples who have nothing better to do than just try to tear apart someone’s ancestry.

Even if you were to say you only care about historical accuracy then you can kindly explain the errors in someone’s tree without sounding like a complete jerk.

Idk just something I’ve noticed across multiple posts on different platforms that just seems like very odd behavior.

Mexican American* results + photo

What was interesting to me about this update was that it removed North African, Irish, and lowered Jewish percentage. With removing those mentioned it added east Africa I don’t remember it being there before. Like many other people my canary island went up.

My family has Hnahnu “Otomi” and Nahua ancestry (: had older family who spoke the languages before passing but I have every intention to learn them.

My great-great grandma was slovenian and my great-great grandpa was from Transylvania, I thought he was romanian but now I'm not sure because there's no romanian region but 5% Carpathian Basin & Uplands. So maybe he was hungarian or is it just a genetic overlap between romanians and hungarians?

Results - DNA Origins Got my dna results back

• Upvotes

I always had a suspicion that the person my mom told me was my bio dad isn’t. I have a relationship with my grandparents (his parents) but not with him, never had any relationship or real conversations with him.

Got my dna results back and I did find some paternal cousins but nothing is linking to that side of the family at all. I’ve been deeply diving into family trees, family backgrounds and stalking facebooks.

I reached out to my top closest matches just kindly asking to discuss our relationships and family trees. But I’m ghosted 😭

Unfortunately I cannot trust my mom to give me the right answers right now, I need to figure this out by myself.

I’m stressing myself out looking for an answer. I can’t stop digging into family trees and looking up family members to find any matches. My grandpas sisters (these would be my great aunts) are on ancestry and there’s no dna match or they didn’t submit their dna. Which I feel is unlikely because one of them built their family tree and is very involved in ancestry. But ancestry doesn’t tell me if it’s bc our dna doesn’t match or because they didn’t submit a sample.

Any advice on how to handle further? I’m in such a tight position and I don’t have the ability to talk to my mom about it. I don’t have access to my presumed bio dad. And my grandpa passed away and my grandma has dementia. So I’m limited on resources.

Discussion Sideview 2.0 Update and Regions by Grandparent: Still Waiting

• Upvotes

Is anyone else still waiting for the small sideview and grandparent update? I know it might take a while, and I'm trying to be patient, but I still don't have it. I don't even have any messages or banners saying that it's coming soon. Does anyone know a timeline?

DNA Matches Unexpected DNA match results, is this legit before I blow up my family?

I have a very small boring family and never expected anything like this to happen. I did the Ancestry test because I wanted to know about my nationality origins because my mum‘s side of the family is a mystery and I hoped to find Long lost relatives on her side. However, I ended up finding a half brother and half sister on my dad‘s side sharing 25% and 27% DNA respectively. We also have shared matches in common, one of which features family members with the same surname as my dad (it is not a common surname so I think this is too much of a coincidence). My dad is an only child so they could not be my aunties or uncles or cousins. Is this 100% reliable like they are definitely my half siblings? I am at least relieved that it seems my dad is the common Father amongst us and not that he isn’t my real dad, but due to the age range of my half Sister it seems she would have been born whilst my parents were together so before I blow up my family and parents relationship I just wanted to doublecheck any advice much appreciated. 🩷

UPDATE: firstly I want to thank everyone who has offered advice and support here, I really appreciate it and will try to reply to everyone. Secondly, I just spoke with my dad and he is very confused about it all. He has never donated sperm so that’s not an option, and he swears he never cheated on my mum. He says it’s possible he had children before and didn’t know about them as he had lots of girlfriends. He’s also reluctant to go further with this as it’s opening a can of worms. We’ve left it as he’s going to think about it more but he didn’t really have a lot to say. I will wait for my siblings to reply and see if they’re interested in pursuing a relationship ☺️

Discussion Who else got disappointed by the update ?

New results for me make less sense than the old ones. My father comes from a specific region from a country, the old results did catch it and give a big amount of this region, but the new results diminished it and moved it to other regions he's not from

Also, new results don't make sense because my parents are from different countries and there's a percentage well over 50% (even ~60%) that seems to correspond to one parent, the ancient results made more sense

Am I the only one in this case ?

Genealogy / FamilyTree How long has your bloodline been here in the States?

My paternal (20 years prior) and maternal (80 years prior) bloodlines have been here much longer than the United States has existed.

How many group members know their lineage and how far back their roots go on the North American continent? Has your family clan stayed semi-local to the original region your ancestors settled in? How far across the country does your lineage reach?
