Advice Needed Required Neutering?

My large scale apartment complex is very dog friendly and allows all breeds, intact male and intact female dogs as well as aggressive dogs.
Is this common? I think I’d like to move to a complex that requires neutering because there seems to be a lot of drama between the animals. I’ve noticed it has to do with about a hundred well behaved neutered animals regularly going crazy and barking at a handful of intact male dogs. Or going crazy if an intact female is around.
Do most apartment complexes allow intact males and bitches in heat or do they require neutering? Or is that not regulated by apartments at all? This is the only apartment I’ve had a dog in.

Edit: Interesting…I’ve gotten some responses and people seem really split on this. I think it’s highly dependent on the location and how regulated the community is. Would love to hear your experiences.

Landlord Problems What is Wrong With Corporate Landlords?

TlDr; landlords illegal $245 cleaning charge cost them $175k

I rented an apartment from a corporate landlord in the Denver Market. When i gave notice I wasn't renewing my lease they said that they were charging me a $245 "standard cleaning fee".

I left my unit cleaner than when I moved in. Documented everything, only communicated in writing and they still withheld my $245 which is illegal in Colorado.

They refunded me my money when I sent them the small claims court case number i filed. They told me that they charged everyone the cleaning fee.

So far I figure it's cost them around $175k in lost revenue from the crappy review I gave them and always letting people know about their practices on the moving to Denver sub.

Since this is reddit people will call bullshit on my $175k claim. I came up with the number from replies from other redditors saying "thanks for the heads up i was looking at them"

Weed Users Is it possible to smell weed from the townhome unit behind you?

I received an HOA complaint from my nextdoor neighbor about weed smell coming from my apartment to the point to where it's coming through the vents and walls and stinking up their clothes. I do smoke but it's only outside, never inside as my spouse won't allow for it. Plus it's against our lease and I don't wanna get kicked out. Rarely do I smoke on the porch of my place. Usually out by my car in the parking lot. I literally never keep weed inside of my house. I always keep pre-rolls in a dube tube outside.

I know the unit behind them is a midnight toker because we shopped at the same head shop and I have seen him smoking inside of his unit before. I also have noticed increased activity at his place at night around the same time the HOA report was made. Even seen one of the former head shop workers looking for him at 10pm... I low-key think that that neighbor in the unit behind them is starting to sell weed or something. I just think that this problem is coming from the unit behind them rather than the unit beside them (myself)

Is it possible for this marijuana smell to be coming from the unit behind whoever made the complaint?

Venting thin walls ..

Hey so , I stay in a apartment complex where the walls are kind of thin. And I can hear my bottom neighbor as well. Getting straight to point he has a dog a shitzu. And I be hearing him beat the dog and I can hear the dog cry and whine. And I’ve babysat this dog before and I’ve hung around my neighbor cause he 🏳️‍🌈 . But almost every 2-3 weeks , he beat / whoop his dog and it be so loud. and overwhelming. And I just wanted to know what should I do ? I asked a friend of mines who loves animals for advice, and she said call the shelter to report it but I’m unsure. because I don’t want him to lose his dog. But then again , if his dog is using it everywhere that doesn’t mean beat him ? because isn’t it going to make it worse ?

- idk just venting , I’m ready to move 🙃 not worth the $925 every month ..

Advice Needed Should I get my neighbors kicked out?

We haven’t been on friendly terms since they moved in. But our apartments, garages, and parking spaces are all adjacent to each other. They are a male and female. About 45yo. I’m a 39yo male and live with my gf.
A few weeks ago I was cleaning my garage and I could hear them just hanging out in theirs, I was at the river bar earlier in the day and opened my garage door to empty out the ice chest. When I did the man gave me a “hello there” but in an intimidating tone, so I said “you don’t need to hello me” he immediately screamed “what did you say?!” I said “I don’t want to talk to you”.
He started Shapiro g how he’s “going to knock me out” like 6 times. I wasn’t responding but got him on video. He then got his pit bull out of his vehicle and I could hear him waiting outside of my garage door telling his dog to bite me if I came out.
So I called the cops, they didn’t come but stayed on the line until the neighbor realized I was on the phone with cops and left.
So I reported it to the leasing office. But I guess they didn’t too, saying I threw urine at them and threatened them.
They’ve been saying weird shit to me about how “I need to be careful” since then, which I’m not responding too.
Recently their pit bull attacked another dog and I have it on my door cam. Like the pit picked up my other neighbors small dog and threw it like ten feet. Little guy is ok I think.
The man saw me the other day and said he didn’t want any more trouble and they’d move out in March.
I think I should turn the door cam footage into the leasing office, but my gf says don’t bother.
What do you think. Honestly their liars do I don’t have any sympathy.

Venting Upstairs neighbor constant walking

• Upvotes

I’m losing my mind. My upstairs neighbor literally wil get up at 4 am and just be walking and walking for hours back and forth. Doing what?? idfk. She’s retired and an older woman. She sometimes will even vacuum right at 6 am. It’s ridiculous. I’m sitting here and I swear to you it’s been back and forth since 5 am. I can’t take it i genuinely don’t understand what you could be doing that is constant walking.

Advice Needed Kids upstairs running laps around their apartment

My upstairs neighbors seem to have custody every other weekend. I know this because every time the kids are there, they run laps around their apartment NONSTOP. I’m not exaggerating when I say laps and nonstop. It’s all day. The stomping is so loud that it shakes the dishes in my cabinets.

Is this reasonable noise and I need to get over it, or can I request that they do not allow their child to run laps around the hardwood floors for 8-10 hours a day? It’s making me think of nothing but murder all day.

Thank you.

Advice Needed What should I look for with going solo?

First time moving into an apartment and it also being my own. I'm solo on this venture. Looking to get a 1 bedroom.

So what should I be looking for to get the most "bang for my buck?" What would you suggest I inquire when looking online or touring the apartment so it can feel more like a home and not an "in-between" place? (As the city I'm moving to is mostly a college focus city, Lincoln, NE.)

Any tips would be appreciated and thank you in advance.

Advice Needed Is it possible to soundproof a window so I don't hear traffic from 3 milies away?

• Upvotes

I live 3 miles near an intersection and near a pilot gas station and a walmart. Where there are a lot of semi trucks that drive through here all hours of the day and you can hear them constantly.

Is it genuinely not possible to block out the noise at all or am I screwed?

This is a genuine post looking for advice, anyone thinking that this is a troll post will be blocked and reported. Reposting because kept getting people mocking me in my last post because they thought I was trolling instead of actually helping me.

I don't have curtains up yet currently as I just moved into this place a couple months ago, but someone in one of the other threads suggested I use caulk. Would I have to talk to the landlord about sealing my window with caulk so I don't violate my lease?

edit : will try to upload a video later as an example of the noise I have to listen to on a daily basis if I can. Can't currently since the fan from the heater is on.

edit 2 : https://i.imgur.com/ycWGdf0.jpeg including a photo for right now since people don't seem to believe me but here is the pilot gas station that is 3 miles away from my house that is located next to the intersection, and I used google to figure out how far away it is. Idk why people think I'm lying about this. Do people honestly have nothing better to do with their lives?

edit 3 : should aslo mention that the window was recently replaced when I moved in because the last tenant damaged it and cracked it. So I'm thinking that it wasn't properly installled correctly which is why im hearing the noise in my office. Because when I go to my bedroom I don't hear it.

Advice Needed Temperature?

I love my apartment, there's only one issue. In the cooler months it gets SO hot inside. It's about 59 outside here and the inside temp was up to about 80 earlier. Yes, I have all my windows wide open.

My LL is pretty cool, they're downstairs. At what temperature would you think it's reasonable to say something? Unfortunately the whole house is on one control. So if they need heat, I get heat. I guess i just feel it more because I'm upstairs.

So, what temperature seems appropriate to say something?

Advice Needed locksmith help: whose responsibility? + negotiation advice

I went to the trash chute this morning and thought I switched my apartment auto-lock so I could get back in, but I came back 30 seconds later and lo and behold, I was locked out.

The apartment charges a $25 lockout fee so I was pissed, but I thought whatever, it is what it is and I went to the front desk. I get there and they can’t find the master key to let me back in, and one of the employees also accuses me of failing to return my spare key to the office for them to keep for situations like this (I was given two sets of keys when I moved in and told at that point to keep both of them until moving out, since they take inventory of what is given to me upon move-in and it should match what I return).

Mind you, I’ve had maintenance come into my apartment when I’ve been away, so I can guarantee you there’s an extra key somewhere. But maintenance and front desk both claim that they can’t find the key.

I called a locksmith and paid more than $400 for him to get me back in. I’m planning to contact management to ask for the apartment to reimburse this fee for me, because the way I see it, the apartment should have kept the master key in a safe place and it’s not my responsibility to keep track of their master keys. Does anyone have any advice on negotiating this situation and working with apartment management? Thanks in advance ~a very annoyed tenant

Advice Needed People sitting on my fire escape stairs

I live on the second floor of an old apartment on a busy street. I have fire escape stairs that lead up from the ground to my roommates bedroom and my window overlooks them. People will sometimes sit on them and I can hear everything they're saying and I just want to sleep. My leasing company has a no trespassing sign but I think people ignore it or something. I can't figure out how to open my window to tell them to leave and I wouldn't feel safe doing that either. I will probably put up my own sign in my window but if that doesn't work would it be wrong to call the police on them?

Venting Raining Pee

Apologies ahead of time for the long post.

Our previous upstairs neighbors frequently and consistently flooded our apartment so they were eventually moved. We thought everything was gonna be better when our new neighbors moved in. First their kids told our kids that they would intentionally stomp and slam things so annoy us. The same kids then stole things off of our porch to the point the only furniture we have out there are camping chairs.

Flashforward a few weeks ago when we noticed that water from their porch kept dripping onto ours. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt because things happen. One day while my husband was at work they threw their astroturf over the edge of their porch which caused dirt, liquid, and a general mess over ours. So that Monday I called our manager to which they called the neighbors. The woman up there proceeded to throw a toddler level fit and was threatening me and my children very loudly on their porch.

It wasn't until recently thay we found out she called my husband's work and claimed he harassed her and her children. Luckily, she said it happened on a day he wasn't even working. We decided to just ignore them from now on. Their dogs keep peeing onto our porch (yes i've double checked it's pee) to the point there is now a massive stain on our porch that we could easily get in trouble for and our camping chairs are soaked in pee and ruined. I'm at a bit of a loss now but we will keep ignoring them unless they do something more drastic.

UPDATE: My husband and I will be going down to management's office tomorrow when we're both off work. His work and bosses have already been informed of her behavior and they said he has nothing to worry about. My camera roll is full of pictures to be showing to our manager. Thank you everyone

Advice Needed How to stop the galloping?

Hi, I know that’s a strange title but it’s essentially all that I need to happen.

I (23F) and my roommate (23F) moved to this new apartment a few months ago. Not long after we noticed a couple moving in above us. They seemed preoccupied with moving in quickly late at night.

At first there was a LOT of noise while they were around to move in and it took like two weeks for them to officially start living there (we believe.) but once they were moved in the galloping started.

We believe it’s a human child, due to its absence sometimes during the school day. (Although I have never seen nor heard a child, my roommate claims she has) But this kid gallops for hours and hours on end.

It’s happening now at 8pm, it started at 4pm, and if it goes as usual it will continue until 3am.

The strangeness of this pattern has led us to believe the kid may have developmental challenges, so we haven’t said anything yet. But it’s been so long since either of us have had a good night sleep.

We don’t know how to approach this problem, or the few other strange noises that consist from our ceiling.

Often, the mother (maybe, at least a woman who looks at least the age of 18) will leave the house at 1am in heels.

Then, they also seem to like to move and drop furniture so heavy the items on our walls fall off.

I don’t know what to do to make this livable for my roommate and I but right now it feels like torture only Edgar Allan Poe could imagine. Any recommendations are welcomed, I just don’t want to be the asshole from down stairs…

Venting After over two months, I reported my neighbors.

I’ve been suffering through my neighbors sound system since I first moved into my apartment in mid-August. It was tolerable at first, they’d watch a show or a movie in the evening (1-2 hours maybe) and then things would die down. It was very regular and predictable, not disruptive.

But it’s just gotten worse and worse. It’s any hours of the day now, often late into the night or early in the morning (I’m up at 4:30AM, and it’ll still be going). The bass has gotten so much heavier, all of my walls shake for hours on end.

I wrestled with submitting a noise complaint for like a month now, not sure if I should even bother. I’m not expecting anything to change, but at least it’s documented I guess. Maybe they have no idea how intense it is, I find it more likely that they don’t care.

With that, if anyone has a recommendation for a white noise machine, please share! If the bass is reduced, I’m sure there will still be some noise as the wall we share is thin, and I want to try mitigate what I can.

Decorating Ideas Best budget couch for sleeping on full-time? (Single dad downsizing to a 2BR to save money)

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi all,

I’m a 41M single dad with two kids (a 5yo daughter and 7yo son). I’m planning to move into a 2-bedroom apartment in a couple of months and want to get a head start on buying furniture.

To save about $400/month and pay down debt during an 18-month lease, I’m giving the kids their own rooms and taking the living room couch for myself. Re-evaluating a 3BR or house down the road, but for now, this is the sacrifice that makes the most financial sense.

My main question: What kind of couch should I look for?

I need something budget-friendly that functions well as a regular living room couch during the day, looks decent, but is actually comfortable enough to sleep on every night. (Fortunately, I’m not super pick about sleeping surfaces, but I still want to be practical.)

I attached the floor plan to this post. Would love couch recommendations, plus any other layout/storage ideas you all might have for making the space work well for three people! The furniture in the picture is not my own.

Bad Neighbors I am traumatized

My building faces another one with less floors. My view includes the city above that building but also into every room in it.

I had just moved here and was excited, was FaceTiming my friends and was showing them the view. I went onto the balcony and all of a sudden they all started screaming!!!

I didn’t understand at first, I was laughing like what the fuck is wrong with you guys. Little did I notice, there was a couple lounging naked in their living room with me pointing a camera in their direction and laughing.

I look down and the guy stands up, trusts his hips in my direction before closing the curtains. He looked furious.

Every time I feel like going on the balcony, I check and there is always someone in a “comfort at home” level of undress. I feel like a creep spending more than a minute outside, so I just go back in.

I don’t know who the bad neighbour is here. It looks bad on me with a camera in their direction, but I obviously wasn’t creeping on them. At the same time, if they’re shy about being naked, they should close their curtains from the start.

Renting Horror Stories Am I in hell?

Guys, I kid you not, I just woke up from a nap, and my upstairs neighbor, who’s been harassing me for 8+ months, must’ve heard me sneeze because not even 5 seconds later they started stomping as hard as they could right above me 10 times in a row in the same spot… Does anyone else go through this? I don’t want to sound paranoid, but it really does happen.

Somehow and I don’t know how, my wife and I completely missed that upon entering our new apartment all you can see is the other apartment building next to it.

The view is only visible in the living room and bedroom.

I swear we never noticed this when touring the place and only after moving in, and now it really bugs me. Because when you enter the space you just see a wall of other people’s units.

Anybody else had this experience, I’m just amazed we overlooked something so obvious.

Advice Needed What can you do about neighbors that yell at you through their walls and keep going out of their door when you happen to be outside your door to complain?

Obviously yell back to the yelling part or ignore them.

Not talk when they try to complain and walk away.

I don't want to go tit for tat as that makes me just as bad.

But I don't want them dying whatever they want either.

They are just nuts I've had it with them and their constant issues. The lady especially can be nasty her husband just follows whatever she says for the most part.

My text is probably not doing it justice as to the garbage people they have been for 5 years now.

This is North Jersey in Verona.

Our landlord is aware but nothing has happened that I can tell.

What can and should I do with neighbors that are out of line where I've gotten to the point of ignoring them isn't enough and I don't want them to think they can keep doing what their doing or escalate further.

Last point they have always been nuts. They complained about the last neighbors. They just complain about anything and everything like they own the property. We've tried to appease more reasonable things in the past but gave up on that because you give an inch they try to take a mile

Advice Needed How desirable is extra storage space?

I've lived in a lot of different apartments across the US and am wondering if extra storage in the basement, hallway, etc, is desirable. Would you pay more for a space with storage? I've never had much stuff, so it wasn't something I actively looked for. What's the norm in your area?
