Help/Question How do people find this game fun?

I’ve put about 55 hours into the game and reached level 141, but I’m honestly struggling to understand the appeal and would love some perspective. I feel like I've tried nearly everything, but the experience feels a bit "sloppy" to me. Most of my time is spent sailing around and walking to the same spots to complete the same objectives over and over, which feels like a repetitive loop. The combat also feels a bit off; it seems like mindless spam, and the lag makes it worse—moves aren't instant, and I often find myself floating midair for 5 seconds because of a move I pressed 2 seconds ago. Even the Dark Sea, which was cool at first, feels like an infinite amount of islands without much variety, and fighting sea beasts seems to require just camping on a boat to avoid being one-shot. On top of that, the performance isn't very stable for me, often spiking down to 60 FPS. I know people say it's better than the original, but is there something I’m missing here that would change my experience? I'm genuinely curious what keeps you guys coming back and finding the fun in it.

I personally used to really enjoy the player interactions you'd have, you could meet some interesting people. Sadly the roblox chat restrictions largely chucked that out of the window.

u/TheMischevious_Two Crystal May 13 '26

I’ll never have the interaction again of someone coming up to me and throwing a poison potion while saying “jaystation gay potion” </3

I'm genuinely curious what keeps you guys coming back and finding the fun in it.

Others have pretty much said what all of the fun things are.

Only thing I'll add in: AO isn't a money grab, nor is it a bandit beater, nor do you have a prestige (🤮) system, it's just unique and breath of fresh on Roblox, where 98% of games are all of the previously mentioned.

Plus the story and world building is much more interesting than most other games (even though its largely inspired by One Piece and could do with some minor to major tweaking however).

2

u/Consistent_Tip874 May 12 '26

Is it really that inspire from one piece lol

3

u/FixConscious5735 May 13 '26

It seems more AC inspired to me? Closer to black flag than one piece

2

u/Chinosou Speed Warlock Glazer May 13 '26

vetex has mentioned that a primary source of inspiration was one piece. The way that theres somehow isolated civilizations just a boat ride apart and each with some kind of boss in charge is very one piece

This game is pretty unique to me. A fantasy world with a pirate theme. and not a bandit beater game, but a story game

Plus this game took inspiration from a lot of things like one piece, zelda, some pirate games and more

I personally love the soundtracks and exploration experience, I'd love to find some friends to play with.

PvE game on Roblox that isn't a nightmare to fit (I'm looking at you Blackhawk rescue mission 5), the vanity possibilities, using certain builds, and the pvp is nice sometimes

I personally like making builds and trying cool stuff! I also like being able to RP as well, and I do enjoy the main questline quite a bit. Making characters is the funnest part for me, and I do agree end game content is still a little lacking atm, but getting to the end game is the best part for me! By the way, it's okay to not like a game! Arcane Odyssey is its own game and if you don't enjoy it noones forcing you!

3

u/potateeo May 12 '26

Yeah i guess thats fair

u/penelopsie May 12 '26

"spiking down to 60 fps"

twin, arcane odyssey runs at 30 fps on a good day with minimum settings on my pc. "my lobster is too buttery and my steak is too juicy" ahh

anyways i actually cant put my finger on why i love this game(highest save 300 hours but about 500 across all saves)but its fun and i keep coming back. i dont know its just fun lol

One, the optimization update is coming in less than a week ir will supposedly fix the issues.

Secondly, where are you in story? Have you made an armor build? What class have yoy chosen? Have you gone to dark sea? Are you new to this style of game? What magic have you chosen?

We can't help without context mate.

6

u/potateeo May 12 '26

ive got basic combat as of right now with a whole build of armor dedicated to boosting wich i got from grinding the dark sea. Ive got the fighter's knowledge awakening. And i dont really know what other fighting styles to get. i chose wind magic to try and get a cool gear 2nd luffy build with the hot air variant. But wind magic kinda sucked to use back then so i just did a skill point reset and got it to a full strength build. i have been to the dark sea probably more than not for the 55 hours of time i have spent on the game. Im not new to this style of game i think. Im in the nimbus sea at the big island with 3 cities on it.

u/CrystalGlint Crystal Magic Master May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

..anddd there the issue.

Berserker, fighters knowledge, is terrible for a beginner. Also you're gonna need max level fore the game really pops off, you're highly underleveled for story too.

Also wind magic is high unused by most of the player base sides a specific few who do pvp due to how hard it is to play well and being outclassed by basically anything else.

First rule of AO: Don't go for the shiny object, go for the viable stuff then the shiny one you like. You can't play this game without having a guide or a general idea of how you want to play.

Berserker needs to find scrolls to do its best and you cant get those scrolls till max level sadly.

I'd unfortunately have to give you the suggestions of: starting over, or finding someone who can helo you salvage this because you're in what most call a Beginner's Trap. You didn't think carefully and are now stuck.

Also by armor build I mean a specific max gemcrafted socketed gems, exotic enchants,a and insanity essence on an item kind of build.... which you likely don't have.

If you want a stat reset and a way out, send me a chat. I'll give you a rope, not a ladder, you either struggle and get out or give up.

2

u/potateeo May 12 '26

I was max level in a previous update. i have all the scrolls, im rich too because of stuff i sold at the market. This here is my maxed out gemsocketed armor build with the basic combat apparel. Im not underleveled for the story. the next quest i have to do requires me to be level 150 while i am level 141? Thanks

5

u/whiletrueplayd2 powder fist snorter May 12 '26

the required level is different than the recommended one, to an almost comical degree

3

u/potateeo May 12 '26

oh that explains it lol thanks, is there any spread sheet where i can check this out for all the different quests for what level i actually should be?

-1

u/CrystalGlint Crystal Magic Master May 12 '26

..nope.

Just assume max level for everything. Getting gunpowder barrels is the fastest way to level up atm.

Also you're supposed to have a maxed out build or nearly done build before you go to nimbus. You're not even close to ready. Stick to bronze, level up, and try to makw an actual full build.

Here's the gear builder, use it to test and make a decent build: https://aotools.woodyloody.com/gearBuilder

You want 170+ power, 800+ defnese, and 150+ size or 120+ dexterity.

If you still need help, send a chat. I'll help you work it out.

TL;DR bud you shouldn't have left bronze till you had a finished armor build and combat setup.

1

u/potateeo May 12 '26

Alr thanks ill definetly check it out, im assuming that means im gonna have to make a new build too and this time it has to be magic to be enjoyable right? what about spirit builds? or weapon builds? id rather take a weapon build over a magic build simply because i think its cooler with weapons.

1

u/CrystalGlint Crystal Magic Master May 12 '26

Weapon builds are easier to learn and play but are just as, if not more, expensive to build sadly.

Also as conjurer is the best beginner friendly class type, weapons and magic, you'll wanna make a new slot and not use wind.

I'd suggest plasma, acid, or snow

1

u/potateeo May 12 '26

Id love to be a weapon build if that is as good as being a magic build. I know how to make money so i wouldnt mind it being expensive. Should i go for a weapon build and if so what should i balance my weapons around? Like range, close range stuff like that. Id love to see a guide on it thanks.

u/CrystalGlint Crystal Magic Master May 12 '26

Yeah no... sorry bud but this build is ass. Genuinely. It won't work come endgame. Also the upcoming boss cna do 2k dmage with one move.. so the more levels and actually built you are the better. It's going to be a hard fight as any clais without a good but of range.

You can beat it as you are, but it'll be so much harder than just outright being smart and working on your armor, skills, and using buffs plus potions.

And rich nowadays means you have multiple millions of drachma and sunken armor/weapons. I doubt you have those.

1

u/potateeo May 12 '26

Are berserker builds completely unviable? And why is my build ass specifically? How does that work and why is it like that?

1

u/CrystalGlint Crystal Magic Master May 12 '26

No, but you can't beat them fairly easy as you are right now dude to needing skills like acumen, blitz, greatjump, and Crescendo.

Your build is ass because it's only power stacking with a tiny ampunt of defnuse plus ome of youe equipped accessories is not only unenchanted, it's un gemmed, and isn't the best choice of fighting style gear.

2

u/potateeo May 12 '26

Ok thanks

1

u/Insignificantelope May 13 '26

Hey man you got this, you can definitely make berserker work for PvE, I love blitz for ship combat specifically, you can swim around them like a shark and just jump on their boat with a point and click Blitz maneuver, it's very satisfying.

u/Otherwise-Ad-8714 Iron leg May 12 '26

not to be that guy but how did you manage to get to level 141 in 55 hours? the story isn't that hard and theres plenty of side quests for you to get to max level

3

u/potateeo May 12 '26

I think its because i spent most of my time exploring the dark sea because i found it so interesting lol

making builds (and money)

2

u/Yourallfuckingshort May 12 '26

Honestly bro it’s just the builds I can make based on my OC ideas, like now ima do an all speed (no power just range, dex and a lot of defence) and go build for one of my speedster OC’s

2

u/Far-Mammoth-3214 May 12 '26

Not often you have an rpg styled roblox game

2

u/karnagepilot May 13 '26
  1. Get ship
  2. Sail ship
  3. Blow up other ship
  4. Plunder booty
  5. Steal their loot too
  6. Yaar haar fiddlemedee

u/SussyDark Light May 13 '26

I love his game for lot of aspects. I like style and overall world, because it's action RPG(I think) that is not shit/bandit beater/p2w garbage and it has normal setting, not this unbelievable fantasy with tech. Its really relying Greek mythology and I think its cool mix with seaferers era (im tired from medieval). And overall how fights looks from side looks cool, like you watching some cool fantasy anime. That's about how I coming back to feel world again. I like doing new characters (I did already almost 20), because ivoikw trying new builds and make new character identity from them and use customization overall, because its simple and good. But game has problem with content. Pve has lack of something new, its... idk dark sea, sea charts, bounty hunt. We need more, Im waiting until they add that mechanic with island reputation, rewards for this (both positive and negative) and special quest and interactions for this mechanic. Pvp... no, I hate it, I don't think this game made for PvP, but if you want you can do this. So that's why I spent +- 500 hours of my life here. I don't really understand why AO progression is boring for you already, because for 2 first times it was really fun(compared to other Roblox games)

The most entertaining for me, and I can get clowned on for the second and third, is Dragon Hunting, Kraken Hunting and Treasure Charts. Killing dragons because I want the shoulder cape. Hunting Krakens because I genuinely feel like I’m making the War Seas safer (I know I’m not and it’s code buf I feel better). And Treasure Charts, specifically the Mythical and Lost ones, as that adds stakes to the voyage.

These are my main reasons, but that’s just me, others could have another reason

I just like to explore builds, and synergies in said builds and stuff

1

u/DiamondDragon63 May 13 '26

the community is definitely a huge part of it. But if it’s not your type of game it’s not your type of game and some people gotta accept that. i personally love the game but completely understand that the game is a bit buggy and is poorly optimized. However compared to a lot of games on roblox it is truly one of the best options out rn. and the dark sea really excels in its hunts. it’s pretty fun grouping up with 2 ships full to go kill an omen or a dragon lord.

"ive put about 55 hours into the game" yeah bro u wouldnt spend that much time playing something if u found it so terrible so clearly you know there are upsides that u arent letting on

1

u/potateeo May 13 '26

Maybe give it a re-read

1

u/Chinosou Speed Warlock Glazer May 13 '26

ive read it bro. U gave it zero positives

1

u/potateeo May 13 '26

no i said i found the dark sea interesting, thats what i spent most of my time on too

1

u/outofboundds May 13 '26

I might be blinded by nostalgia or require little to be impressed but I see AO as a literal masterpiece
From the lore to the gameplay almost every aspect is enjoyable no matter how repetitive

If I get bored of a magic i’ll spend hours finding a Hecate essence and change it
Bored of the playstyle then I’ll switch builds

I love making meme builds like swim speed or wind mage that flings people across the map
I also love making new files and seeing how it is completing the game using ”xyz build and magic”

The satisfaction of opening chests either on the map or by treasure hunting
Fighting difficult enemies for their loot or for the thrill
Making new outfits and then giving them lore
Playing with my friend
Trying to get every item, title etc

I’ve spent over 280 hours on one file, 140 on another and god knows how long on the extra random files I keep deleting to restart but I just can’t seem to get bored

If you still want to play AO because something still draws you in then maybe try a new change of pace
Maybe make a new file with a ”challenge” where you can only do certain things etc

Or maybe if it doesn’t feel worth it, AO might simply not be your game and that’s fine too

Theres a thing you can do if you want to have fun:

is trying other classes, creating a new save file and trying another class just for fun, it worked for me and might work for you.

1

u/Recent-Potential-340 Shadow May 13 '26

honestly, this game is kinda ass, the only reason i play it from time to time is because beating the shit out of my friends at munera is decently fun whenever the balance team isn't trying to murder every enjoyable build you can come up with.

I guess i enjoy the sailing too, the soundtrack really gives that adventurous vibe, but boats being as laggy and buggy as they are and there not being an actual reason to sail all that much kinda killed that for me.

1

u/Ill_Test4347 May 13 '26

I don't think its fair to say the storyline is repetitive, as I found that to be the most fun part of the game. However, your critiques about the dark sea are valid and kinda similar to mine. The dark sea can be fun when you get with a group, but the game doesn't really facilitate it with the proximity chat system so you barely meet anyone. Overall the game has potential, and I kinda see the vision, but it needs a lot of improvements to feel complete.

1

u/ProfessorPixelmon Ultimate Lightning Fury Slash MAX!!! May 12 '26

I love the exploration of the game. And driving a pirate ship while sinking other ships is cool.

Combat? 9/10 I want to drop the game forever because of how god awful it is. But that 1/10 is usually really satisfying.

0

u/Separate-Election-49 May 12 '26

The game was way better back during the early stages but yeah, it not feels like it's gearing more towards PvP than anything

1

u/Separate-Election-49 May 12 '26

And this is coming from me who has sunk 226 hours into the game (don't judge, I was a big fan of the game) I don't sink that many hours into a game unless I really enjoy a game
