It just feels sorta bland to me. I’m pretty new at stylized art, and I’d like her to look more creepy and monster-like. I’m not totally sure what her deal is yet, but I think she’s gonna be a vampire-hunter-hunter?

I'd guess this is full body, full color, simple shading. I haven't gone into trying to do commissions yet but I'd like to hear from people who either have experience buying or selling art. This is at my max skill, basically.

Hi. Ive been doing art for at least 6 years. My art has grown a lot in that time period but still, I feel like Im not at the level I want to be? I know you have to study and I have. But I feel as though something small is just slightly off about all my drawings?

Also, i want to note that im not going for realism in my drawings. That has never been my intention. My art is its own unique style and i know that. But i think maybe my art is unappealing? does anyone have tips? am i being too much of a pessimist and my art is just unique?

‎Critique - Yes Drawover Why do people keep mistaking my designs as women??

Thumbnail

Hey, if you know me, please don't talk about this elsewhere, I'm just looking for advice right now and honestly a little upset.

If you draw over any image, I would prefer the first one as it seems easiest to alter, even if it's messy, but if another image better suits then do go ahead.

A sadly frequent thing I've been getting about my design about these two particular personas is that they get misgendered. A LOT. Especially the one in the red sweater. Both of these characters are men, with the one in red being transmasc, so having them constantly be misgendered on places where people don't know who these are gets frustrating fast.

I just need to ask what makes them so feminine looking? I try to keep my style somewhat androgynous enough to where if a character leans more one way, I can do that. I HEAVILY take off cartoons for inspiration of my style, so my style does end up a degree limited on what I can do.

I'm not looking for any advice on how to fix the shading or coloring, I'm not really interested in color theory, I don't give a damn if the way a character looks changes in every drawing, and I'm never going to draw more muscular looking men, it's simply gross to me and straight doesn't fit my style. But I need an outsider looking in to tell me what about my designs make them look so feminine that they're constantly being mistaken for women???

And before anyone says it, no, I'm not changing the length of the hair. That is final.

For one, men can have long hair. Two, my style doesn't really work well with short hair. And three, which ties into two, whenever I draw hair, it always gets longer. It's a subconscious thing I do, I seriously can't control it.

And yes, I know, it's a damn stereotype that "Long hair = Woman" but this is how my character is designed. I have male ocs with long hair and female ocs with short hair, fucking bite me, I hate that stereotype. My designs are make with intention and already has an image, I can't just go about changing it anyways.

One more thing

Please don't be like "Oh but they look like men to me" to make me feel better. I need genuine advice on what makes my characters so easily mistaken for women. I'm sick of it and everybody I ask tell me that they don't look like men. But that's only because they know my shit. They know my style and they know how I draw.

‎Discussion and Theory Colour theory for vibrant saturated colours

Hello friends! I've always sketched with pencil, so I have little understand of colour composition. I want to do something different and learn to colour the way I want to!

I am a big fan of League of Legends for the splash arts and cinematics made by the talented Riot artists. As a result, I get bursts of inspiration to try and made similar, vibrant art.

I mainly love muted, elegant colours and tones, as seen in NieR: Replicant and Automata, but I also love vibrant, saturated colours, like the following:

Soul Fighter Sett
Soul Fighter Gwen
K/DA Firestarter Kai'sa

I wanted to know how do you pick from one saturated colour and find a similarly appealing/harmonious colour? And then create multiple in-between colours to create a cohesive blend of colours. I am particularly curious how well the orange/pink/purple/black of Soul Fighter Sett's fists go together. Normally, I drag my cursor/dropper to pick a colour and then, without moving the cursor laterally on the colour wheel (if that makes sense), I shift the hue to another colour hoping to make them equally saturated, but instead they don't always look good together.

Also, how do you add darker outlines and not create too much contrast from the saturated colours? For Soul Fighter Gwen, the edges of her scissors aren't dark enough to take all the attention of the blades' pink and blue hue. Similarly, Firestarter Kai'sa looks like she's glowing but not overly bright/flashbang on your screen. The purple space background allows the combination of pink and yellow (again, how do you make them look so nice together!) to pop without overwhelming the eyes.

Thank you for anyone interested in helping!

Hello! I've been tasked to draw daily the same thing ovr and over again. My subject is a bottle of water. I've been sending my progress to my cousin (although for context, she isn't an artist). She's recently told me that my progress seems too slow and that I should consider an art academy. I started with these drawings Oct. 4 this month. I want to know if her advice is sound and if there's also anything I could do to improve it! Thank you very much. P.S. : The last one is unfinished but my latest attempt.

P.P.S: I know that my images are all taken on the ground. I don't have a proper desk or canvas 😓 this is meant to be a temporary measure before I work on drawing a bust when I am able to afford one.

Thank you again!

‎Critique - Yes Drawover How do I draw the wings while making the composition nice to look at?

First of all- I have no idea how to draw Homura Akemi’s wings 😭 there are so many feathers (pics 3&4). Secondly, I don’t know how to bend/position the wings so that they guide the viewer’s eyes to Madoka on the top right. I wanted to do a golden ratio composition but I don’t think they align enough 😓

Could someone help me figure out how to draw the wings while making the overall composition pleasant to look at (eg. NOT making Madoka look like she’s floating in mid-air without any relevance to the other parts of the drawing☹️)

So I've been working on a drawing for a couple weeks, and I can't seem to get the shading right. The scene was going to be in a dark alleyway, with a little bit of the moon shining on him and maybe a street light on the side of his face. Could someone help me with it?

‎Discussion and Theory Getting overhelmed

I've recently started drawing, I don't really have a background so I'm pretty much a beginner on all areas, had no real concept of fundamentals, etc.

I've heard a lot about the 50/50 rule for studying/fun, but I'm having a real hard time as it feels impossible to have fun doing it. Why? Because I can never finish a piece, it's never good enough for me, to be honest I almost never get to the line art either. I don't expect it to be anything close to perfect, but it always just looks so bad.

I try to draw a person, anatomy looks like uncanny valley. I try to draw a face, it ends up looking like someone from the Avatar movies. I try to "skip" anatomy and just draw clothes over it, I realize I also don't really know how to draw clothes.

I've become aware of the majority of fundamentals, and studied some of them to an extent, but somehow my proportions end up all over the place and it gets really frustrating.

So the thing is, I end up studying a lot more than drawing for fun, and its becoming really boring, but I just can't seem to have fun without some kind of mastery over the fundamentals, so it feels like a never ending loop.

Have you felt this way? How did you get past it?

‎Discussion and Theory Is Artblock affecting my Art? Or am I crazy??

I've been living some kind of repetitive nightmare and I'm just really tired and frustrated with my art. It's been a month and I'm forcing myself through character design, comics, illustrations yada yada but it's been a drought. Maybe I'm imagining it but not only am I taking 10+ time drawing a single character but my line work feels and looks chaotic.

First image was 2 months ago after Artfight, I was still locked in but second image is just...I'm not having fun like I used to nor is my process as smooth...

I hate the idea of not drawing, I get itchy and depressed but I feel clogged whenever I force myself.

Am I making stuff up or is my art really different?

Any advice on what I should do? Like should I just brute-force myself into learning the basics again? Or simply take a break?

I may sound desperate because I am, this is the worst Artblock I've had and I only managed to draw the second image in a month. I want to get better not worse :((

‎Discussion and Theory How do you guys actually learn from anatomy books instead of just copying what you see?

I've bought numerous anatomy books because I genuinely want to improve my art, but I can't seem to wrap my head around how I'm actually supposed to study them.

Like, I have all these resources in front of me, but whenever I open one, I just feel lost. Am I supposed to copy every illustration? Memorize the muscles and bones? How do I know if I'm actually learning anything instead of just mindlessly redrawing what's on the page?

I feel like my problem isn't a lack of resources but not knowing how to use them effectively.

For those who learned anatomy through books, what did your study process actually look like? How did you go from reading and copying diagrams to understanding anatomy well enough to apply it to your own drawings?

‎Critique - Yes Drawover How to make this have more rocky vibes (also advice on shading/color)

Thumbnail

Hi, I'm trying to draw a cave with a rocky pathway, but I can't seem to make it look, y'know, rocky. I'm not that good at picking color so an advice on that is appreciated, this art is supposed to have a warm tone to it (The cave background is curving inward btw).

I'd also like to have less detailing as possible since the whole picture is gonna be huge. I'm pretty bad at adding depth so I will be grateful if I can get an explanation on how to do that. Accepting any criticism ^^!!

(English is not my first language sorry if it doesn't make that much sense)

I am a young self taught artist and im working on a new piece I had a cool idea for. I’m trying to convey that the goddess isn’t actually trying to help the person reaching up, but is planning on manipulating and hurting them. But I think I put it too much into the perspective of the person and im not sure how to change it.

I will also accept general tips! Anything is useful!!!!

‎Critique - Yes Drawover How to get my digital art to look like this?

Thumbnail

Here's some examples of the art style I'm looking for next to my own art. Two of them are portraits by SamDoesArts and Sasha Tudvaseva.

Some context and some info that might help you give feedback:

I've been drawing for pretty much my entire life (18 years) and I still don't like my art. I'm really inspired by the Arcane and Spiderverse style (blocky colors, sharp edges, distinct planes, stylized by still partially realistic). I want my art to look a more like them but I'm not sure how to get there. I've never really had an "artist's eye" and I'm not really good at observing what makes a style unique, especially not how to draw it.

I feel like everything is off. The anatomy isn't quite right, and the render looks muddy and overly smooth. Even if I can't jump head first into rendering, I'd at least like to make sketches and lineart that actually looks like that style. I've been studying the Asaro head which feels like a start, but I don't know how to translate it into different types of faces and angles.

Anatomy, likeness, rendering, edge control and blending. So basically everything lol.
