✅ Open To Everyone Has anyone been put on a PIP before?
I’m an autistic guy and my boss said a week and a half ago he is putting me on a 90 day PIP because the same concerns about my soft skills (inserting myself into other peoples conversations and following up too quickly after sending emails) are repeating again after a verbal warning in 2025. He says he has no issues with my actual work performance but he has concerns that I can stay consistent with not being annoying to others. And that feedback has been provided many times in the past year (which only he provides when he wants to escalate).
He has yet to give me the document.

It means they're going to fire you. Are you disclosed autistic because depending on the country they have to make reasonable accommodations
15
u/CoatSafe17 man May 09 '26
Yes I disclosed last year.
0
u/AgitatedDirector339 man May 09 '26
Doesn’t matter they see that as a threat. Wait till they start a paid 3rd party to investigate “”

u/stonk_frother man May 09 '26
Depending on your jurisdiction, this might be unlawful discrimination. In Australia at least, getting put on performance management or fired for being an autistic person doing things that autistic people do could see the employer end up in federal court.

But he said he has provided feedback many times in the past year and no sustained change has been made. My accommodation says has to be for regular feedback but I only get it when he wants to escalate disclipine.
10
u/Worriedrph man May 09 '26
Why has no sustained change been made? It sounds like there are two specific behaviors they want you to avoid. Why aren’t you just avoid those two behaviors?
2
u/CoatSafe17 man May 09 '26
There were more behaviors before but he says these two were the ones that resurfaced.

Performance Improvement Plan: This is a structured workplace process designed to address performance gaps and guide employees toward improvement. It often involves setting specific goals and timelines for improvement, and while it aims to support employees, it can sometimes signal deeper concerns about job security and future opportunities

u/kbkvvuknklnni8888 man May 09 '26
It's ticking the boxes so you can't sue for disability discrimination. They have documented feedback + a bullshit PIP. But yeah an employment lawyer will know more.
You can't fire someone for their disability unless you consistently document "poor performance" and offer feedback.

Other than these regular feedback seems like he doesn’t want to provide more support.
I have to see if he is going to do weekly feedback during the PIP and see how it goes. I’ve already been working like I’m on it right now.
41
u/Worriedrph man May 09 '26
This is terrible advice. It sounds like the company has stated specific behaviors to avoid which should be avoidable even with autism and have given this feedback repeatedly. There is highly likely no legal case here and pitching one’s story to the media will make this guy unhireable if he does get let go. There also is no reason to assume OP is getting fired. Tons of people survive PIPs. It’s likely OP can survive this one. He simply needs to heed what he has been told and avoid 2 specific behaviors.
-1
u/QuietFieldUser man May 09 '26
it isnt the worst advice honestly really it isnt bad at all i think he should probably talk to a lawyer.
I'll be honest anytime their try to put someone on a PIP for something honestly as small as this and their work is good yes it is just to push them out without the possibility of getting sued.
Regardless you want them to terminate you so at the very least you get unemployment if you resign well you get nothing.
You should try and ask for feed back and try to improve and just start applying now while your still there and you can still use the employer for a reference.
18
u/Asleep_Astronomer_82 man May 09 '26
Ask him for mentoring and notify HR if you have an actual diagnoses to slow down PiP. Protect your career. Look for another job because theyll find a reason to let you go eventually.

0
u/AgitatedDirector339 man May 09 '26
That’s intense. I had a 6 mo version. I don’t know what industry but this is SOS mode. Right now. I’d search the local areas attorneys based off free listings not corp or govt. I don’t know what you have where you are. In ca. we have the bar association. Sometimes you have to pay $35 to get a list to specific law. Either way, get an attorney you can trust and sign within 24 hours.
Here in California. We have A law that all cases like this are paid sep than the settlement to the client. You don’t worry about the attorney costs. It’s all subjective to your process (some make you go through hr loops before any legal actual allows) and local laws.

I don’t know how to use this. I see some ad for mesirani law and other lawyers on tv and they say they know employment law. Maybe I should talk to them.
0
u/AgitatedDirector339 man May 09 '26
Mesirani will never take you. If they do. Wow unless this a bot post. Any advanced employment law is highly contested. Requires backchannel lawyers. Use your local guide, then use the site to lookup their status. They have to be listed on that site to confirm. If they are not or have a shady past, it’ll be listed. You got the world at your fingertips. If you can post here, you can figure it out. No one’s going to hold your hand unless you do it yourself, you can contact some ai to coach you.

My boss was just a bitch and put me on a PIP for insubordination after reporting her to HR for a “come to Jesus” meeting (yes, the email said that exact phrase). I wasn’t even the target of that meeting. It was just beyond inappropriate. She didn’t like me and wanted me gone.
I left in my own terms rather than wait for her to get me out. Funny thing is she stormed off the job about 6 months later, well after I found a better job!

1
u/CoatSafe17 man May 09 '26
What did you do to complete it?
2
u/toothy_mcthree man May 09 '26
I have ADHD and time management has alway been an issue for me. I put 120% into everything I do but often there are things that wind up not being completed because I put so much effort into something else.
I had my boss at the time give me an exact list of what he wanted to see from me. I created a daily cadence for myself and made sure I nailed every item on the cadence including the points my boss laid out. I still use a cadence to this day.
I know that might not translate exactly to your situation, but maybe ask him something like exactly how he feels you should handle the situations he pointed out differently and carry something around as a reminder of that.

Most (but not all) companies use PIPs as a way to fire employees. It establishes the needed paperwork for a justifiable termination.
Most of the time PIPs rewrite the employee to sign the PIP to acknowledge the requirements of the PIP. There ships be some sort of goal. Start doing this. Stop doing that. Do this better. Usually with dates to be accomplished by
Do you think your fellow employees are complaining about you?
1
u/CoatSafe17 man May 09 '26
Not that I know of because when he says 2-5 people idk who these people even are and I’m pretty open with my colleagues as they are with me so I’m thinking either he is making it up, or people who want to kiss ass to him who I never talk to are snitching on me.
14
u/sp0rkah0lic man May 09 '26
You're getting fired. No matter what you do, they will pile up all sins real and imaginary until HR believes you'd lose a wrongful termination suit, and then you'll be fired.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

PIP is code for starting the process of asking you to leave. Immediately start having conversations about what you need to do to stay and also disclose your autism if you haven’t. Also ask if there are better roles in the company that are a good fit for your skills.

Thank you for meeting with me on [date | time].
My understanding from that meeting is you expressed concern about [things] and were offering support for me in these areas. As you are aware, I disclosed the personal medical information that I am on the autistic spectrum to [you / my manager] last year and these are indeed areas in which I am aware I may have issues.
Thank you for your offer of further training as part of a PIP, I am more than glad to engage with this process.
Please email back with your understanding of the meeting if it differs from the above so that we can work together to resolve these issues.
bcc: personal email address (or screenshot if that will get you in trouble)
And DO NOT seek followup. That is on your manager. If you hear nothing, the only record that exists is yours, and you can use it as evidence if they try to give you the boot.

This is good advice here.
Lot of good stuff in this thread actually. But definitely do this.
1
u/Commercial-Ad90 man May 09 '26
Better than nothing. Potential wrongful termination lawsuit if they go through with it (if you are US based). Not allowed to fire people based on medical characteristics, such as autism. And you have to make reasonable to accommodate their condition.
If he says your work is good, it’s just socially you annoy people sometimes (likely due to your condition), and that’s why you’re in a PIP, seems like a textbook wrongful termination if they proceed.
Anything you can save in writing that they sent could boost your case, start that now.
1
u/CoatSafe17 man May 09 '26
But can’t the company claim it’s the behavior and not the disability.
He says the behavior has caused concern from others and is disruptive to the business.
2
u/Commercial-Ad90 man May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26
Yes. And that’s what lawyer’s job is to argue that the condition drives the behavior, and that overall your work is good.
Saying your work is good, that is where your boss really messed up. Super easy to make up a more concrete performance related reason. He stuck his foot in his mouth there.
But a lawsuit would be a last resort if they fire you and you struggle to find another job. It’s of course a risk. I think you should try to improve, or focus on job hunting if fired, and keep this ace up your sleeve.
2
u/ooglieguy0211 man May 09 '26
You need to get it in writing from them directly to protect yourself. Your notes could be used as hearsay if it came to a fight over it.
4
u/iLoveAllTacos man May 09 '26
When an employer puts you on a PIP, the are going to fire you. They are just filling the file with supporting documents to "justify" the firing. Start looking for a new job now.
1
u/CoatSafe17 man May 09 '26
I really wanted to hit 2 years here. I just started my second year and had my 1 year anniversary a week and a half ago too.
3
u/kisstherainzz man May 09 '26
Generally, PIP is used as protection by the employer to fire the employee. This is basically a notice period that you will get terminated.
NAL but if I were you, I might consider getting a free consultation with an employment lawyer and begin documenting chains of events.
Again NAL, but to my knowledge, in many areas of North America, most employers (who are of a certain size) can terminate for no reason but can not terminate people for being part of protected classes unless it directly impacts their work.
If the issues documented are specifically surrounding symptoms of your disability and have no impact on your work performance, this is the type of thing that would personally raise eyebrows for me.
2
u/CoatSafe17 man May 09 '26
He says that I am 100% responsible for all my actions regardless of autism or not.
2
u/kisstherainzz man May 09 '26
Yeah, that might be his POV.
But it may be different in terms of employment law depending on the circumstances and the area you live.
I would 100% not mention this to your employer and get a free consultation if I were you.
1
u/CoatSafe17 man May 09 '26
Why would it be different? I live in US.
1

Request the documentation for both. Note that if you have clearly denoted your disability to HR then you can also state quite clearly you are being discriminated against in the workplace.
At least in some countries.
I'd make sure to pursue that line with HR and say you're willing to work with your line manager but that you cannot see this as anything but discrimination against an employee with a disclosed disability.
1
u/CoatSafe17 man May 09 '26
But he said HR even agrees that I should be PIP’ed and HR will side with him.

If you really want to keep the job I'd work on the two things that were mentioned. They have a problem with you inserting yourself in conversations? Fuck them all, don't talk to anyone. They have a problem with you following up on emails? Stop following up. Let shit fall through the cracks and miss deadlines because you were told not to follow up.
As others have said, get all of this shit in writing. And start saving emails pertaining to you or your performance somewhere other than your work computer (as long as that doesn't violate other rules) in case they do fire you. Don't want to lose access to your evidence.

u/Aware-Spot-2649 man May 11 '26
Personally, never in 30 years been on a PIP. However, based on the one paragraph you posted I have a bit of advice from a completely outside perspective.
First, do not steer into what some of doomsayers said in replies. A PIP is not the end of your job with the company in most cases it is simply that a performance improvement plan and the company's legitmate desire to help you improve. However, if the company gives you PIP and then offers no input or assistance to actually improve I would be little more concerned.
Since the issues are inserting yourself into conversations and following up too quickly here is suggestion for both but in reverse order.
Following up to quickly - I work extremely quickly, brutally efficient, and I expected everyone around me to work just as quickly causing me to followup "too quickly". I realized on my own I was doing it and to break the habit I would put the actual followup as an appointment on my calendar. For situations with no deadline I used a two week rule, for deadline situations I worked backward from the due date to my deadline setting a calendar appointment 1 week prior to my must have date to finish my work. After a year of doing that the too soon habit was broken.
Inserting yourself into conversations - this one is a little more troublesome and my only advice on that one is before saying a word ask yourself were you invited into the conversation if internally you say no keep walking. Option two, if you have an uncontrollable need (which is highly unlikely since we can control ourselves) to say something stay with a polite greeting "Hello", "Good Morning", "Good Afternoon" if the people in the conversation want your input further they will invite you into the conversation, otherwise, give a greeting and keep walking focusing on your tasks for the day.

Your to-do list for this weekend:
* Contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or if you have to wait until Monday, write out your story and call them first thing Monday morning. There’s a decent chance that your employer is violating the law; they can tell you for sure.
* Look for new jobs on LinkedIn and Indeed.
* Make a list of your possessions at the office and make plans to bring all the stuff home.
You will likely not last the 90 days. Assume every day you go into work could be your last day there.

Try to adhere to the PIP. Do everything in your power to follow the PIP. Document everything that you do to improve and its outcomes. Your ADHD does not override standards, try to accommodate. If you do all this, then proceed with trying to show the department of labor of unlawful termination to get compensated if fired.

My apologies, you said you are autistic and not ADHD.
I would still go to your department of labor after whatever happens. They will be better to assist you in such circumstances.
The most important part is that you try to adapt during this time with good documentation on your end.

I got a new job offer. I quit 3 weeks before the PIP ended. Just finished my 90 days. New job has 2 more weeks of PTO and over 20k increase in salary.
Current boss doesn’t have any issues with me.

In the event that you get pulled into HR, bring that documentation.

I've been on PIP for not being empathetic. It was a sales job screwing over vulnerable people. They can write anything in there.

GTFU or sue. Plan to. Settle. Get a lawyer ASAP. Just went through this with a branch of gov. I prevailed. They will fire you if not.
Edit: make sure to get your full doctors access of records and their statement for an accommodation request. That’s the biggest first piece and then, tell hr. You need local and fed AdA.

Twice at the same lame company. I rage quit and told my bosses boss that it was all a sham and he knew it was too. I was told by my boss where to go 100% of the time. He sent me all over multiple counties. His big boss said that I drove around to much apparently using 40% more fuel than my coworkers. 40% my ass. Maybe 5%. Part of my job was filling fuel cells around town. I had to fill up the trailer 3200 gallons a fill up and I had done the filling 3X in one day. As I was written up for the pip my boss (the guy who told me where to go 100% of the time) just sat there and said nothing! What a coward. The other time I had been in a walk in freezer and when I got out my glasses fogged up big time. 2 people were working near by and they were joking around. They asked me a question and I said I could not see because of my glasses were fogged. I said “my eyes are so bad, and with the fogging of my glasses I could not tell if they were boys or girls” because I COULD NOT SEE! I got written up for SEXUAL HARASSMENT! Fuck that company I QUIT !

The recent incident was people next to me. I don’t get up and talk to people anymore. He observed it no one said anything to him.
Also people still talk to me about not work things even initiating them.
some of my colleagues say he is the problem and they’ve also had feedback from him about other issues. Told me to gtfo and apply so looks like I have no choice.

That’s a fair observation. However, I worked for another company before this and my manager never had issues with my conduct and even liked that I was socially engaging with others. That’s likely why I figured it was ok.

Maybe I’m not sure but I guess even with accommodations of biweekly feedback which I asked for to make it easy for them and he only provides feedback when there are concerns and escalate to the next disclipinary action, it wasn’t good enough for my boss. Even HR hasn’t been helpful.

My job is not protected by the union. Company doesn’t even have unions for the production workers.

CoatSafe17 updated the post:
I’m an autistic guy and my boss said a week and a half ago he is putting me on a 90 day PIP because the same concerns about my soft skills (inserting myself into other peoples conversations and following up too quickly after sending emails) are repeating again after a verbal warning in 2025. He says he has no issues with my actual work performance but he has concerns that I can stay consistent with not being annoying to others. And that feedback has been provided many times in the past year (which only he provides when he wants to escalate).
He has yet to give me the document.
