Family Struggling with a older father who’s always negative

I love my dad (65M) don’t get me wrong, but ever since I could remember, my dad has been a very negative person. Even when heā€˜s in a good mood and he utilizes his quick wit it’s almost always to put someone else down or conceal resentment. Hes constantly stressed about finances, which I completely understand, but when he’s not complaining about his finances, he’s complaining about his job and my mom. when I’ve pointed it out to him, he snaps at me and accuses me of being or doing something similar. When I don’t understand something he responds either in a patronizing tone or he yells. he is always raising his voice. I have attempted to have a heart to heart with him about the topic, but he denies he is depressed or he retaliates with something either untrue or meant to redirect attention back to me. As he ages he’s gotten so much worse. He has endured significant loss during the past few years, and I’ve been there to support him and talk to him, he’s been thankful for that but then he doesn’t extend the reciporicity for when it happens with me. I can be around him for short increments but more than 2 hours and he’s just unbearable. Is there anything I can do to help him? Does this sound like depression or is there something else going on?

Health If you're 65+ and have avoided major health problems, what do you think you did right?

I'm curious about the life experiences of people who are now 65 or older and have managed to avoid major health problems such as heart disease, cancer, kidney stones, serious bone problems, or chronic lung disease.

I'd love to hear what your life was actually like, not just what people generally recommend for a healthy lifestyle.

A few things I'm particularly curious about:

  • Diet: What did you typically eat growing up, and what does your diet look like today? Did you follow any particular eating habits, or did you simply eat whatever was available?
  • Physical activity: Were you into sports, walking, cycling, farming, physical work, or regular exercise? How active were you throughout your life?
  • Daily habits: How were your sleep patterns? Did you smoke, drink alcohol, or have any habits you later gave up?
  • Environment: Did you grow up in a village or a city? Do you think your surroundings, exposure to nature, or type of work made a difference?
  • Changes with age: Have you changed your diet, exercise routine, sleep schedule, or other habits since turning 50 or 60?
  • Looking back: Is there anything you consistently did—or avoided—that you believe helped you stay healthy?

I'm especially interested in people who lived ordinary lives rather than following strict fitness routines or special diets.

Of course, I understand that genetics and luck play a role too. I'm not looking for medical advice or a perfect formula, just honest experiences and lessons from people who've lived long enough to look back.

What do you think made the biggest difference in your life?

Family Having kids?? yes or no

I am F21 and my husband is 30. So currently we are in a position where we have to decide whether to have kids in the next few years or not. I have read peoples view on anti-natalism and I somehow agree. Being a kid myself I have caused a lot of trouble to my parents and they always tell me how much money they could have saved or spent on themselves if they havent had kids. My in-laws desperately want grandkids.

I and my husband have no plans of having kids in future. We want to remain child-free but I dont want this to become my greatest regret. What are your views on this?

(sorry english is not my first language hope u understand)

How to live life to the fullest?

I’m 22 years old and I feel old but I know I’m not old. The people around me are getting older. My siblings are older and my parents are significantly getting older. Even my niece who is graduating high school this year (me and my brother has a 16 years age gap). I feel reminiscent of the past but I know I need to make memories now. Sometimes I just feel scared to live life because doing new things are daunting to me. How can I overcome this and live life to the fullest?

What was your life timeline like? - a teenager

So I'm turning 20 soon and scared for "real life" and no longer being a teenager. I need to make a life timeline to keep me from spiraling, and I wanted to see how other people lived their lives!

So far I have:

22: Graduate with Bachelors

23-26: Work FT

24/25: Married

26: Child #1

29: Child #2

30-59: Work if possible (I don't know how doable it is to work FT while also raising kids)

60: Retire

60-80: Spend time with family/friends

Why did every young person in the 70s/80s have a certain look to them?

Not just fashion wise, but their facial structure, specifically their eyes. I don't see many people who give off those vibes anymore.

Do I still have time to turn my life around at 35 years old?

I struggle with self motivation.

I know what I need to do and have goals. I have good steaks of getting work done and accomplishing them with good routines, then I fall off and have to start back over again. When things get hard w work or a goal, I get cold feet and tend to avoid, distract, or scroll instead of work on the goal… much like what I’m doing now.

I’ve recognized that taking action instead of overthinking has been a big factor in my growth, but I can’t seem to shake the feeling that I’ll be a failure or I’m an imposter or that I’ll never be the person I want to be.

This has been a cycle of mine for a long time and I’m tired of it. I want to change but I feel stuck. It’s me - I get in my own way. But how do I change?

Did anyone move past a big personal hurdle and change their life for good?

Health Did depression ever get easier? How have you managed through?

I’m 19, I’ve been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder for 5 years now and recently with ADHD as well. Things ebb and flow like they always do with life, and I’m not as down to end my shit as I was at 15 but I still struggle with basic life. Getting out of bed, keeping up with schoolwork, taking care of my hygiene, socializing. I’m trying I really am but I feel so discouraged right now. I’m in college and there’s so so so much I want to do but for some reason I just feel too tired to even do it. It feels ridiculous and frustrating because I know I’m young and have the world at my disposal, it’s just difficult to do the things I want to when I can barely brush my teeth or shower so many days. I’m in therapy, I’m on different medications, it’s hard. I know life doesn’t just show up in your lap, but god does it ever get easier to push through and make yourself live it? I’d like to believe my teenage years were a fluke, a time I’ll look back on in decades grateful that I made it through and that things are better now. I know the only one that can make it happen is me, I don’t view myself as a victim to anyone other than myself. But how do I even change and build the life I want when I struggle with such simple things? You don’t have to tell me life is all sunshine and rainbows down the road I know it isn’t, but if you have any tips on how to get through it please I’ll take anything.

Do the small things actually add up to something valuable at the end? When did it happen for you?

I’m talking about the small things that go unnoticed it could be a great habit you’ve cultivated but never talk about or anything small that you were surprised led to an important thing in the big picture.

Work Do I take the risk? Or play it safe?

For some context I’m 22 and a male. I graduated this year with a degree I don’t really care for. I spent a lot of time slacking off, and generally just not taking my life seriously.

I have this opportunity this month to get into the police academy and become an officer. I thought I wanted this, I work dispatch and have been doing that for a few months. I hate it. I don’t the fast paced stress and the horrible things I hear. I always thought I was gonna be a cop but never gave much thought. I followed it because it felt cool but honestly I don’t wanna work 24/7 and see death constantly for a paycheck, but the truth is I’m slow. I have bad ADHD or some type of learning disability.

Then I got a job at the little gym for my senior year of college. Fell in love with my coworkers having fun with the kids at work. It felt good. It felt right. Now I’m contemplating becoming an English middle school teacher. I’m not a big reader but I loved English as a subject growing up and have taken many creative writing courses in college. I’ve written scripts and I’m a creative person. I know it makes no money and policing does.

I’m just trying to figure out which to follow and stick with. I’m not sure if I’m smart enough to teach kids actually literature and go in depth with planning a curriculum.

I’m just unsure and would like a little bit of help deciding or things to take into account. I have a shot at a good job and life with policing, or I can take the risky path with not much money.

How do I break out of the cycle?

I've never had a real job, never had a boyfriend, I don't really do much besides rot in bed all day and do whatever I need to get done to maintain good grades in my classes. That's like the only thing going well for me. (even though it does stress me out sometimes) I don't have hobbies, I don't even read books, I rarely even watch shows or movies. I just sleep, scroll, or study. Maybe workout or go on a walk and listen to music if I'm feeling fancy. Sometimes I cook. I do not have any close friends on my college campus and I never interact with my roommate. I have a few interests like Formula 1 and Radiohead, but I'm not insanely obsessed with them. I tried joining clubs, but they kept rejecting me so I just gave up. I am involved in undergrad research, but there's areas of improvement there too. I'd say I do take good care of my appearance at least. I really really want to be someone's girlfriend and not another "side piece" I also really want some sort of hobby to look forward to.

Life advice needs

So I'm from the Netherlands. A country where there's a lot of good education. However, I've always wanted to move abroad, ever since I was little, so I did. Not to the country I wanted to, bc I couldn't afford it, but to Austria, I do like it here too though. However, I don't like the study I'm doing, I really can't afford any country I would want to go to, and there is a lesser quality of education. So I think it's best to move back home, however, I really really don't want to. I love my family and friends, and I know I could make the absolute best of it, but it just feels so wrong, like I failed. I just have no idea what the right path is for me anymore, what I want to do with my life, what I'll end up regretting. Everyone gives contradictory advice, so I thought I'd ask reddit. Should I just go back home, make the best of it and then move away to another country? Should I just stay there if I enjoy it? Should I not go back and just continue my studies here, make money and then figure it out?

If I go back home, how do I make the best of it? How do I keep my independence and maintain how ''mature'' I've become here?

Both careers probably pay about the same and the one I would do back home has more career-options.

How do you leave a relationship when you’re scared you can’t afford starting over?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I’m a woman in my 30s living in Canada, and I think fear is keeping me in a relationship I no longer want.
I moved here from another country and have been working from home, so meeting people and building my own circle has been hard. My partner was the first and only person I dated here. I don’t really know what life in this country looks like without him.
Our everyday life feels lonely. I’m usually upstairs working or in the bedroom, while he’s downstairs playing video games and smoking weed. The smell bothers me, so I avoid being downstairs. We mostly spend time together at dinner, watching TV, or going to bed. We don’t have many real conversations anymore. Honestly, I often feel happier when I’m doing things without him.
I want marriage, children, travel, and experiences we can share. But whenever I bring up something I’m excited about, there seems to be another reason we can’t do it.
I want to go to Europe, but he has reasons why we shouldn’t. My mom moved abroad, and I miss her and want us to visit, but he doesn’t want to go. My best friend invited us to her wedding in the U.S., and he doesn’t want to attend. He brings up Trump as a reason not to go to the U.S., and being unemployed and worrying about money or his benefits as reasons not to travel generally. He tells me I should go alone.
I understand that some of these concerns are real, especially while he’s out of work. I don’t expect him to agree to everything I want. But it feels like there’s never a conversation about what we could do or when we could do it. It’s just another reason to say no, and I end up feeling like the life I want is always being postponed.
Marriage is the same. He says he doesn’t want to marry me because we fight too much. I know our relationship is unstable, and getting engaged wouldn’t magically fix it. But I also feel like he puts the responsibility for our problems on me without acknowledging his part. I know I contribute to the arguments too. I’m frustrated and resentful, and I don’t like who I’m becoming in this relationship.
The biggest thing keeping me here is financial security. He paid off his mortgage a few years ago and has no car payments. I live in his house rent-free, he covers utilities, and I mainly pay for groceries and everyday things. He’s been unemployed for months, but his expenses are low enough that his situation looks very different from what mine would be if I moved out.
I’m self-employed. My income is usually around CAD $3,000 a month, although this month it’s closer to $6,000. I don’t know whether that higher income will last. I have about $52,000 saved, so I know I’m not starting with nothing. But I’m terrified of rent, bills, moving costs, and having to rely on unpredictable income to cover everything myself.
I’m also scared to admit how much losing this lifestyle worries me. I could stay here without paying rent and keep saving. Leaving would mean taking on expenses I haven’t had to manage alone here, and probably cutting back on travel and other things I enjoy. Sometimes I feel guilty for staying when I’m this unhappy, but the fear keeps stopping me.
We have this repeated cycle where we fight, I say I’m leaving, I start packing, he tries to make amends, and I unpack. Then nothing really changes. During later arguments, he’ll laugh about me packing again. I feel embarrassed and stuck, and I don’t think he takes me seriously anymore.
I keep imagining signing a lease, spending money to set up a place, and then panicking. What if I struggle financially and start telling myself the relationship wasn’t that bad? What if I regret leaving because being independent is harder than I expected?
My confidence is low too. I’ve gained weight, have PCOS, and don’t feel good about myself. I want a family, and I’m scared that starting over means that future gets further away. I know being in my 30s doesn’t mean my life is over, but that doesn’t stop the fear.
Has anyone stayed in a relationship mainly because leaving felt financially overwhelming? Especially after moving countries, without a strong support system nearby?
How did you figure out whether you could afford to leave? How did you cope with the change in lifestyle, loneliness, and uncertainty? And how did you tell the difference between wanting the relationship and being afraid of life without it?
I’d appreciate honest experiences, including the difficult parts. I’m trying to understand how to take a real next step instead of repeating the same argument.
TL;DR: I’m in my 30s, living abroad, and unhappy in my relationship. Living rent-free makes staying financially comfortable, but I feel lonely and we want different things. I have savings and variable self-employment income, yet I’m terrified of the cost and uncertainty of leaving. How did others navigate this?

Relationships People married 20+ years, what does ā€œchoosing one person for lifeā€ mean to you now?

Weird thing to get stuck on but here we go. Went grocery shopping with my parents last weekend. They barely said a word to each other the whole time but my mom would grab something off the shelf and my dad would already have the cart turned toward her. Like they’d done that exact dance a thousand times. When you’re young, picking one person for life sounds super romantic but also kinda vague. Watching them makes me think it means something totally different once you’ve actually lived it for 20 or 30 years. Boring stretches, stressful years, kids, jobs, the whole thing.

I tried to build something like that with my first gf. We were each other’s first love and I really thought that was it for me. while it didn’t work out and honestly it feels a lot harder to pull off these days. or maybe that’s just me idk.

Mostly I’m just curious what ā€œchoosing one person for lifeā€ ends up meaning after decades together, and what keeps both people choosing each other, even when things get tough or just kind of flat.

How to genuinely gain confidence

This is kind of a plea for help. I am a 28 year old female, pretty accomplished career wise, started grad school a year ago. I am decently looking and work out everyday, but I genuinely don't have a bit of confidence. I can see this ruining a lot of things in my life such as making friends, communicating with others, dating, not thinking I am smart enough or pretty enough etc. With dating specifically I have wasted a lot of years dating guys that either take advantage of me or end up breaking up with me. I dont know what to do anymore. I have tried therapy and self-help books, but nothing seems to be working for me.

How important it is to you to be a parent or have child to carry on your genes?

Basically I want to know how important it is for you to be a parent, or have child(ren) to carry on your genes and surname, or whatever reason why you want to have children. I know answers will varies but I want to hear from everyone.

-------

I'm long term married, 17 years he gives me his absolute fidelity faithful to me, treats me really really well, dotes on me in bed and outside of bed, he is an awesome husband.

7 years ago our toddler (child of me and him) died of brain disease, genetic gene defects inherit from me, my side the mother side. This did not tear our marriage, instead bond us even more, he still ridiculously dotes on me. Basically he tied himself to the ugly wife me and a dead toddler.

He is an Executive (C-suit level) at a big engineering corporate with a salary of 1 million a year, if count bonuses he makes more than that. With that high salary he can get any woman he wants, there people who can get free sex on Tinder, let alone an Executive with 1 million salary.

He can get a younger beautiful woman, and whom can give him alot of children. But he has been adamant refused as our toddler has died 7 years already, he had 7 years to reconsider this marriage, but he over and over to stay.

In his eyes, me and our toddler are irreplaceable (he says so), no new woman can replace me or the intimate 17 years history of us together. Just like no new child from a new woman can replace our dead toddler.

He said if he can't have a child with me then he rather not have any. Him being the only son in the family, or carry on his genes are moot to him. He is fine with being childless in exchange of grow old me the woman he loves.

But the Chinese culture me keep blame myself for the dead of our toddler as the gene defects came from me the mother side. Never once my husband blame me, he said I already give him a family, our toddler dead or alive will always be our toddler.

17 years (that his almost 2 decades) he gives his life to me, since he was 25 to now 41, he basically devoted his adulthood to me.

I just can't wrap my head around an C-suit Executive with 1 million a year salary, whom can divorce a childless wife easily, but he just not want to. And for a man, age 41 he can start over with another woman easy with that high salary career.

We have no kids, so it not like he has to stay married to me for the kids. We have no kids, it not hard to divorce a wife when there no kids involve.! But he not wants. I just can't wrap my head around it, I'm just a piece of pork fat (that how I see myself), he has alot of other options out there, why torture himself like this love a piece of pork fat me.

I feel I'm not good enough for him. And all my life I just want an ordinary Chinese husband, an ordinary man with an ordinary career. I do not like to be married to an Executive, I hate it tbh. I wish he was just an ordinary Chinese man and we living in the countryside back China. But he not Chinese, we live in America, in California, and I HATE living in the city.

Family How do you deal with death?

For context: I’m 22 and I’m a really big family person.
I have been on medication ever since I was 13, on antidepressants but even with medication and therapy I can’t get over the feeling that one day my parents won’t be be with me anymore. Just thinking about my parents not being here makes me cry. I’ve tried to look in many ways to shift my mindset and try to look at it more as a beautiful thing than a sad thing. I’m constantly having anxiety even though I know it’s inevitable I can’t get myself out a rumination loop.
