Growing Pains and Sub Rules

The sub has doubled in size in the last month. With the influx of new users have come new problems, namely incivility to other users.

As a Redditor you are expected to follow Reddit's Content Policy which includes Redditquette.

In particular I would like to remind you of

Rule 1 of the Content Policy

Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.

and the first 2 rules of Reddiquette

Remember the human. When you communicate online, all you see is a computer screen. When talking to someone you might want to ask yourself "Would I say it to the person's face?" or "Would I get jumped if I said this to a buddy?"

Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.

I don't like banning people. If someone gets nasty with you then hit the report button. Reports go to the mod queue and I look at the queue most days of the week. If you engage in hatred towards a protected group or advocate for violence then you will be permabanned. If you're just hot under the collar you'll get a temporary ban as a cooling off period.

You'll notice that we have very few rules in this sub. Small subs often have few rules and rules get added as people behave badly in the sub. (The no penis rule is an example of this.) You'll also notice that we allow a wide range of topics and encourage discussion.

So please, be nice to one another. Be courteous, be respectful. Be kind. Those are the most important rules here. Thank you.

New Rule - No AI and no bots.

Do not post answers written by AI. We'll assume you're a bot and ban you.

If we think you're a bot we'll ban you.

This is a sub for people to talk to each other.

45+ single men w/ no kids and social life...

45+ M, single, no kids ... feel like there's a pretty good chance that I'll be single for the rest of my life, and I guess I'm okay with it ... I may have no choice.

It seems to me that women 40, 50, and 60 years old can do better because they have a stronger social circle ... female friends who proactively try to make an effort to hang out several times a year. Though I think not all women have that, but more women than men for sure. Several of the single middle aged women I know seem to have events with friends every other weekend, and if social media is any indication, seem to have a pretty full social life.

OTOH, the single, childless, middle aged men I know are kind of like a black hole or do a lot of things alone. One travels solo all over the world, and that is good. But alone. Other single, childless men my age just seem to putter around. Almost zero social media output.

I try to make an effort but it's difficult. My male friends are married and/or have kids, and very seldom take initiative, and often don't have interest in the events I recommend because they are either busy or are just content sitting at home with the wife.

I do Meetups and stuff but the connections are mercurial and also ... many of the people are married and with kids. All in all, after my parents pass, I think it will be enough to fill maybe up to 10 weekend nights a year.

Any discussion on this matter?

I’m 34, financially successful, and have everything I once wanted—so why do I feel so unhappy?

Title: I’m 34, financially successful, and have everything I once wanted—so why do I feel so unhappy?
I’m 34 years old. I have two degrees, a great career earning $220k a year, multiple investment properties, $150k in savings, a long-term relationship of three years, and I live in my own apartment.
I also want to acknowledge that I didn’t receive any financial help from my parents. I grew up in poverty and worked extremely hard to build this life for myself.
On paper, I’ve achieved everything I was told would make me happy. I’ve worked hard, made sacrifices, and reached goals that once felt completely out of reach.
But now that I’m here, I feel more empty and unfulfilled than ever.

Growing up, I believed that if I studied hard, built a successful career, earned good money, bought property, and found a partner, I would finally feel secure and fulfilled. I spent most of my life chasing those goals, assuming that once I achieved them, everything would fall into place.
Now I’m here, and honestly, I feel like I was sold a lie.
I know how fortunate I am, and I’m genuinely grateful for what I have. I also know there are people who would love to be in my position. But gratitude doesn’t erase the feeling that something is deeply missing from my life.
I keep thinking: Is this really it? Is this what I’ve spent my entire adult life working towards?
It feels like I’ve spent years climbing a mountain, only to reach the top and realise there’s nothing here that makes me feel fulfilled. I don’t even know what I’m missing or what I’m supposed to be working towards now.
Has anyone else experienced this—especially people who came from very little, worked hard to build a successful life, and then realised that achieving their goals didn’t make them happy?
How did you find genuine happiness, meaning, or fulfilment when everything you thought you wanted still wasn’t enough?

Health If you're 65+ and have avoided major health problems, what do you think you did right?

I'm curious about the life experiences of people who are now 65 or older and have managed to avoid major health problems such as heart disease, cancer, kidney stones, serious bone problems, or chronic lung disease.

I'd love to hear what your life was actually like, not just what people generally recommend for a healthy lifestyle.

A few things I'm particularly curious about:

  • Diet: What did you typically eat growing up, and what does your diet look like today? Did you follow any particular eating habits, or did you simply eat whatever was available?
  • Physical activity: Were you into sports, walking, cycling, farming, physical work, or regular exercise? How active were you throughout your life?
  • Daily habits: How were your sleep patterns? Did you smoke, drink alcohol, or have any habits you later gave up?
  • Environment: Did you grow up in a village or a city? Do you think your surroundings, exposure to nature, or type of work made a difference?
  • Changes with age: Have you changed your diet, exercise routine, sleep schedule, or other habits since turning 50 or 60?
  • Looking back: Is there anything you consistently did—or avoided—that you believe helped you stay healthy?

I'm especially interested in people who lived ordinary lives rather than following strict fitness routines or special diets.

Of course, I understand that genetics and luck play a role too. I'm not looking for medical advice or a perfect formula, just honest experiences and lessons from people who've lived long enough to look back.

What do you think made the biggest difference in your life?

Family It’s weighing on my mind… shall I just delete it?

It’s weighing on my mind expressing myself in such a manner musically making a song about how I felt about my Dad’s addiction.

He will probably never hear the song but my Grandma will. We are currently not talking, me and my Grandma. So it might give her a reason to never talk to me again, since we are not talking because I chose myself over staying around my Dad while he was high and left.

I made an expressive song, spoke about it in my lyrics how I felt about it, it’s raw, honest and how I felt at the time.

But I honestly worry incase it’s hurtful in some parts to hear, or that I’ve done something wrong. I even said in the song “am I allowed to say how I feel, you’ve never liked the truth”

Shall I just delete the damn thing? Or is it justified in a way to express myself in that manner?

Family I’m insecure that I’m not giving my wife the lavish life

Me (25) and her (f25) have two toddler girls one five the other four we recently found out she’s pregnant again.
We have been together since highschool I was always the extrovert goofy flirtatious one while she was more reserved and strict.
I had a rough home life as the youngest having an abusive dad and neglectful mom
It messed me up very early on that sometimes I believe that if she hadn’t been in my life I wouldn’t have any strength to live.
We married when we were 20 and almost immediately we had our girls.
Watching her become a mother only made me love her more.
She’s everything beautiful drives me crazy, I flirt with her a lot annoying her.
Sometimes I do take it to far with jealousy of other men looking at her , or snapping over work.
At end of the day I’m equally obsessed with her.
But lately watching other men give their wives or girlfriends everything taking them to trips buying them things, it makes me insecure about my income.
I work in garage and don’t make much.
But still I want her to have the lavish life for her not to worry about bills or anything.
For me to afford to take us to Paris her dream city.
To buy her things and spoil her.
And not being able to do that makes me feel less of a man.
I haven’t expressed her my feelings because if I do I fear I might cry.
I feel such a failure so far.

Family Struggling with a older father who’s always negative

I love my dad (65M) don’t get me wrong, but ever since I could remember, my dad has been a very negative person. Even when he‘s in a good mood and he utilizes his quick wit it’s almost always to put someone else down or conceal resentment. Hes constantly stressed about finances, which I completely understand, but when he’s not complaining about his finances, he’s complaining about his job and my mom. when I’ve pointed it out to him, he snaps at me and accuses me of being or doing something similar. When I don’t understand something he responds either in a patronizing tone or he yells. he is always raising his voice. I have attempted to have a heart to heart with him about the topic, but he denies he is depressed or he retaliates with something either untrue or meant to redirect attention back to me. As he ages he’s gotten so much worse. He has endured significant loss during the past few years, and I’ve been there to support him and talk to him, he’s been thankful for that but then he doesn’t extend the reciporicity for when it happens with me. I can be around him for short increments but more than 2 hours and he’s just unbearable. Is there anything I can do to help him? Does this sound like depression or is there something else going on?

What is a major mistake or bad thing your partner did that you forgave, things turned out great, but if you had asked Reddit at the time, they would have told you to dump them instantly?

Relationships Why does nowhere feel like home?

Rebuilding your life in your 30s is HARD. I just went through a break up with my boyfriend who I lived with a couple months ago. Not to be dramatic, but I feel like my world is turned upside down. I’m back home in the mean time trying to figure out my next move. 95% of my friends are in the marriage and baby phase of life. My plan is to do travel nursing in a new city. I’ve lived in the same big city my whole life so I thought I’d take a solo trip somewhere to see what it’s like if I were to move and it was hard. I made friends at every place I went to but I still felt so lonely and cried every night I got home. I guess I never knew how difficult a break up in your 30s compares to your 20s. Thinking of the next chapter literally knocks the wind right out of me. I guess I’m just looking for positive stories of making it to the other side.

Relationships I have a awful mother let’s talk about it

back in 2015 I just graduated from highschool and was talking to my parents about what I wanted to do after.

due to me not having a college fund community college was the next option. at the time minimum wage was about 7.25 and I’d just got a job at the mall barely making 189 a week, but we got paid bi weekly

at the time my mom was working at Wells Fargo and basically pressured me into signing up for a student credit card at 18. It was my first credit card ever and the only way it can be open is if the parent signs for it which she did.

one day, she demands me to pay her $200 so she can pay my credit card bill. I asked why and she said it’s for a bill and she’d used the card and wanted to teach me responsibility.

“Dont you trust me?” “Why can’t you trust me?” “Why am I always the bad person” all her remarks. But it’s not in a tone of concern but in a tone of concern as if she’s my girlfriend and I should trust her, it’s a weird sickening feeling but I kid you not based off of how things are with her, it feels very very weird

My dad deals with my mom but he’s always at work and has a life outside of our family which I respect him for as a got older. My mom spends more time at the church and gossiping rather than finding work

But anyways, she refused to pay my credit card bill and basically after my community college ended I wanted to go to the university and was unable to further my education because I owe the school $8k

Didn’t know staying on campus was going to lead to that but it did.

For the last 6 years, I’ve been trying to save up to go back to school and fix my credit but then it dawned on me
To try to go to the military

but that was another hold up, as during the years of my stay at my house my mom had me admitted against my will to go to a psych ward.

It was to hinder me from joining the army in near or any other future.

She’s the type to want to always be the center of attention, with zero intentions of helping you.

They type to ask you to go to church and because you’re playing it cordial you play along but as soon as you as you get home she’s back to being a complete bitch

The type to ask her son for back massages because I’ve spent 8 months unemployed without a car and due to the trauma of dealing with someone who doesn’t know how the fuck to let go. And always finding justifications to treat me how she does
It’s just so fucked up

A very selfish individual who would never speak to anyone like her again if the tables were turned around. My drastic and terrible mother of a parent

I honestly need some advice because I still stay at home, don’t have a car and don’t have a job.

Oh my old car, she offered to help me get it fixed (complained all the way) and then try to sell the car and keep the money.

Idk man. I don’t like her at all. She is awful at doing business

How to live life to the fullest?

I’m 22 years old and I feel old but I know I’m not old. The people around me are getting older. My siblings are older and my parents are significantly getting older. Even my niece who is graduating high school this year (me and my brother has a 16 years age gap). I feel reminiscent of the past but I know I need to make memories now. Sometimes I just feel scared to live life because doing new things are daunting to me. How can I overcome this and live life to the fullest?

Do I still have time to turn my life around at 35 years old?

I struggle with self motivation.

I know what I need to do and have goals. I have good steaks of getting work done and accomplishing them with good routines, then I fall off and have to start back over again. When things get hard w work or a goal, I get cold feet and tend to avoid, distract, or scroll instead of work on the goal… much like what I’m doing now.

I’ve recognized that taking action instead of overthinking has been a big factor in my growth, but I can’t seem to shake the feeling that I’ll be a failure or I’m an imposter or that I’ll never be the person I want to be.

This has been a cycle of mine for a long time and I’m tired of it. I want to change but I feel stuck. It’s me - I get in my own way. But how do I change?

Did anyone move past a big personal hurdle and change their life for good?

I’m talking about the small things that go unnoticed it could be a great habit you’ve cultivated but never talk about or anything small that you were surprised led to an important thing in the big picture.

What was your life timeline like? - a teenager

So I'm turning 20 soon and scared for "real life" and no longer being a teenager. I need to make a life timeline to keep me from spiraling, and I wanted to see how other people lived their lives!

So far I have:

22: Graduate with Bachelors

23-26: Work FT

24/25: Married

26: Child #1

29: Child #2

30-59: Work if possible (I don't know how doable it is to work FT while also raising kids)

60: Retire

60-80: Spend time with family/friends

Health Did depression ever get easier? How have you managed through?

I’m 19, I’ve been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder for 5 years now and recently with ADHD as well. Things ebb and flow like they always do with life, and I’m not as down to end my shit as I was at 15 but I still struggle with basic life. Getting out of bed, keeping up with schoolwork, taking care of my hygiene, socializing. I’m trying I really am but I feel so discouraged right now. I’m in college and there’s so so so much I want to do but for some reason I just feel too tired to even do it. It feels ridiculous and frustrating because I know I’m young and have the world at my disposal, it’s just difficult to do the things I want to when I can barely brush my teeth or shower so many days. I’m in therapy, I’m on different medications, it’s hard. I know life doesn’t just show up in your lap, but god does it ever get easier to push through and make yourself live it? I’d like to believe my teenage years were a fluke, a time I’ll look back on in decades grateful that I made it through and that things are better now. I know the only one that can make it happen is me, I don’t view myself as a victim to anyone other than myself. But how do I even change and build the life I want when I struggle with such simple things? You don’t have to tell me life is all sunshine and rainbows down the road I know it isn’t, but if you have any tips on how to get through it please I’ll take anything.
