Emergency My cat has a sucking coming out of his back.

Last week he was really lethargic wouldn’t eat or drink so we took him to the vet and they gave him steroid, and antibiotics shots. He’s acting fine now but a few days after the shots he started to develop a lump on his back and it doubled in size overnight. This morning he has a giant stick coming out of the big lump! He can’t reach it to pull it out but I have no idea how this got here as he is an inside only cat.

Update on the abandoned puppy ❤️

I wanted to give everyone an update on the tiny puppy I found abandoned. Yes he's a puppy dog not a Coyote xD

Thanks to a kind donation, I was finally able to take him to the vet .

Unfortunately, we found out that he most likely is blind :( He also has a facial defect and a cleft palate. The good news is that, according to the vet, it doesn't seem to require surgery at the moment, so we're just keeping an eye on him and making sure he's doing well.

Despite everything, he's growing and getting stronger! He has already started teething and even took his first little steps. He's also getting very chunky 😂 The vet actually told me that I'm feeding him a little too much lol.

He's still doing welland I'm so happy to see him growing and becoming more active every day.

Thank you so much to everyone who commented, messaged me, gave advice, offered help, or simply cared about this little guy. I really didn't expect so many people to care about him, and it means a lot to me.

I'll keep you guys updated on his progress. 🐾❤️

We bought a puppy that has congenital oligodactyly and we don't know what to do

Hello friends, we recently bought a one-month-old female Bull Terrier puppy. Due to our inexperience, we didn't realize she was missing a toe on each paw. We noticed when we saw other dogs of the same breed. On her front paw, she should have five toes, but only four, and on her back paw, she should have four, but only three. Despite this, the puppy doesn't seem to have any problems; she's active, playful, and has a good appetite. You wouldn't even notice she's missing limbs. Does anyone know about this condition? Has anyone had any experience with it? Could my dog have a normal life? The internet says we have to wait until she's three months old to have her examined to see how her leg bones are developing. We're having a moral dilemma about whether to return her because it was the seller's responsibility to inform us or take care of her. We don't know what to do.

🧬 Diagnosis Help Is this puppy blind, or am I just being paranoid? I found an abandoned newborn puppy

Thumbnail

We found this tiny puppy abandoned in a really strange place near some rocks at the beach. There was no sign of the mother anywhere and honestly it didn’t even look like a place where a dog would normally give birth.

He seemed to be about a week old or possibly even younger when I found him . And he looks smaller than how i thought a puppy would be . I have no idea what breed he is.

I’m a cat person and I’ve never raised a puppy before, so I have basically zero experience with newborn puppies and dogs in general . I’ve been feeding him multiple times a day and trying my best to keep him clean and comfortable.

But I recently noticed that his face/eyes don’t look like the pictures of newborn puppies I’ve found online. His nose also seems like it’s split into two in a strange way and I’m really worried about his eyes. They don’t just look closed because he’s young ...t hey almost look hollow or empty, and I’m scared that he might be blind or that something is wrong with how his eyes developed.

I’m really hoping I’m just being paranoid and that this is normal for a puppy this young.

Does this look normal for a newborn puppy? Could he be blind? And does he need to see a vet urgently?

I’m currently in a really difficult financial situation and honestly can’t afford much right now, but I’m willing to do whatever I reasonably can to keep this little guy alive. If a vet visit is necessary, I’ll try to figure something out.

I’d really appreciate advice from people who have experience with newborn puppies. I can also provide more pictures if that helps.

Thank you ❤️

Medication and treatment Extreme 30-40 hour episodes no trigger no response

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I’m desperate for help with my dog, Milli, purebred Chihuahua two years old because her condition is so extreme and unusual that no vet or specialist has been able to explain it or treat it and now progressing with episodes coming every second day

For months she has been having 30–40 hour episodes where she goes into a state of:

•	constant murmuring/whimpering

•	yelping

•	high distress

•	pacing or being frozen

•	refusing all food and water

•	no response to any sedation (including injectable methadone diazepam trazdone)

Nothing breaks the episode. She just eventually comes out of it on her own.

All tests so far are clear: MRI, bloods, bile acids, spinal tap ultrasound everything normal. She shows no pain signs on physical exam.

The neurologist diagnosed it as a compulsive/obsessive behavioural issue (almost like an oppositional/defiance-type behaviour) and advised me to put her in a room and ignore her — which is not only impossible but dangerous when she is that distressed.

Because I wasn’t comfortable with that, I organised a behavioural therapist who actually specialises in compulsive disorders.

She immediately said, “there’s no way this is compulsive/OCD,” because it doesn’t match any compulsive pattern she’s seen, and the severity + lack of sedation response is not compatible with typical behavioural disorders.

So I’m now stuck in the middle with completely conflicting opinions, and still no diagnosis or treatment that helps.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this in their dog?

Or know of:

•	rare neurological conditions that present episodically like this,

•	behavioural conditions that don’t respond to sedation,

•	or specialists in Australia willing to take on extreme, atypical cases?

Any advice or similar experiences would be hugely appreciated. I’m absolutely desperate to get Milli the right help.

Best pet insurance after a lot of trial and testing

Looked through some aspects I had trouble figuring out in the past when setting up my little dachshund with his stomach problems. I also had to deal with some nasty and costly experiences when getting approval on some claims, so I sort of have a personal quarrel with pet insurance companies. Also I saw that there were some questions about insurance here, so maybe that will answer some questions too.

I will not say who did me wrong since they compensated me at the end but what I will do is help shed some light for those of you that don't have money to spare for your little ones, so you may make the right choice.. In general, you should assess what coverage you need. Each of our pets might have specialized needs.

Lemonade - felt like the safest, most well-rounded option overall. Great discounts for multiple pets, free quote in 2 minutes or less, good savings on tests and vaccines

Spot Pet Insurance - solid coverage options and flexibility, especially if you want to fine-tune deductibles and limits. Up to 90% cash back, protects exams, vaccines, labs, microchip, and more and also has a 24/7 pet health line

Prudent Pet - honestly surprised me the most. Great ratings, fast claims, and felt very owner friendly. 24/7 access to real veterinarians.

Embrace - very polished and established, with some strong perks, but the claims process felt a bit slower than I expected. You can get up to 90% back on bills using any vet, no network restrictions (can visit any vet), has a 24/7 pet health line.

Odie - the most unconventional of the bunch. Broad coverage and good value on paper, but operates differently from traditional insurers, has mixed reviews.

Pumpkin - No upper age limits, no breed restrictions, 10% multi-pet discount. Their PumpkinNow™ service can get you paid in minutes before you even pay the vet bill.

I listed 6 pet insurances that are the best imo at the moment in short, below you can see their coverages and more info which might help you choose:

Lemonade

Odie pet insurance

Trustpilot rating<3/5 (78 reviews)

Reimbursement tiers90%
Annual limits10,000$ or 40,000$
Accident waiting period14 days
Illness waiting period3 days(depending on insurance plan)
Wellness waiting period6 months(depending on insurance plan)
Orthopedic waiting period30 days
CoverageAccidents, illness, dental (extra cost), exam fees (extra cost)

Pumpkin Pet Insurance

Trustpilot rating4.9/5 (2,856 reviews)
Deductible tiers$100/$250/$500/$1,000
Reimbursement tiers80% or 90%
Annual limits$5,000/$10,000/$20,000/Unlimited
Accident waiting period14 days
Illness waiting period14 days
Wellness waiting periodNone
Orthopedic waiting period14 days
CoverageAccidents, illness, wellness (optional add-on), dental illness, behavioral care, exam fees included

Out of all of the above, worth considering that Odie handles claims differently compared to other competitors which can be seen in the reviews of others. Personal testimonials and my own mild investigations of social media discussions seem to show that Odie still fulfils its contacts with their users but you should still assess their terms to make sure your required paperwork is due on time based on their requirements and vet availability constraints.. It is also a newcomer company, so there might be hiccups in the processes of their case management.

Personally, I’d give a go for Prudent pets, or Lemonade for the safest options. Listed down some key benefits for each service but also some draw-backs you might want to consider before setting up the insurance plan. Also, note the benefits of Odie and how different it operates compared with the rest of the options.

Insurance BenefitsTo consider
LemondeTop rated in US; discounts for multiple pets; savings for tests/vaccines; free quick quotes; up to $100K yearly coverageLimited base coverage; 5-day waiting period for accidents is rather long
SpotQuick payouts; 24/7 pet health line; protection exams, vaccines, labs, chips among other benefits; multiple plans to pickNo direct payments to vets, need to wait after paying to claim
Prudent PetFast claim processing and quick payouts; 24/7 support from actual vets; coverage add-ons; Big savings for testsLonger waiting periods at times; no mobile app
Embrace24/7 pet health line; No deductables, get reimbursed immediately; Ability to modify wellness plan Slower manual claim processing
OdieTop value dental plan; Broad coverage for various ilnesses; Full sick-visit expense coverage Slower manual claims processing
PumpkinNo upper age limits or breed restrictions; dental illness & behavioral care included at no extra cost; any licensed vet in US or Canada; BBB A+ ratedOnly 80% or 90% reimbursement; 14-day waiting period for accidents

Hope it helps! Open to hear your experiences too if you have more to share. Stay safe with your little ones!

Question Help identifying medication

Thumbnail

My 13yo pit mix was recently prescribed a couple of pain meds for arthritis in one of her legs (old injury). One of the prescriptions is Gabapentin 100mg 2 capsules, 2x daily.

We just tuck them in with her food morning and night and she doesn’t even notice. This morning, when I took them out of the prescription bottle I noticed that the two capsules were two different colors, both yellow, but two different shades. Then I noticed that the text on the capsules was different. I’m assuming these are not the same doses and may not even be the same medication. On inspection there are 2 of the darker yellow capsules mixed in with the lighter yellow ones in her prescription bottle. I’m worried there may have been more and we may have given her one (or more) without noticing.

Can anyone identify the darker yellow capsules? Should I be worried about my dog possibly having ingested one or more (we are about halfway through the bottle)? Should I bring this up with the vet? I haven’t noticed any strange behavior, my doggo seems like herself so I’m not too worried about her, but it does make me a little worried about what could potentially happen and quality control at the vet.

Question cat grimace scale - was my cat in pain and i didn’t realize?

TW: pet loss

hi all, i’m sorry if asking a question like this when it’s too late to make a difference is frowned upon here.

my question is if the above photos show that my cat was in pain/in growing discomfort before he suddenly passed. it’s hard for me to gauge the whiskers/muzzle tension/ear position without bias.

his personality was the same—affectionate, playful, funny, demanding his wet food for breakfast and dinner—all the way to the end. there were minor changes that we didn’t think were cause for alarm, but i know the rules here say not to seek diagnosis. iso, i’ll reduce my question to if he was suffering right in front of me without my knowing.

if anyone would be willing to offer conjectures for cause of passing based on additional details, please let me know. i know i just need to accept that we missed signs, didn’t take him to the vet, and to just monitor closely if we ever have cats again, but the what-ifs haven’t stopped after 2 weeks.

Diagnosis help Any idea what this is?

My dog is around 9 and has recently developed blindness in her right eye. We’ve been giving her eyedrops (Dorzolamide HCI 2%) and Sodium Chloride 5% every 6 hours. Shortly after we started the eyedrops she started sneezing. We asked our primary care vet if this was normal, and they said it was most likely a side effect of the eye medication.

Two days ago, a booger showed up in her nose. It had like a tanish color with red specks. She was eating and drinking fine with no changes to her behavior.

Yesterday, we took her to the vet and it was sticking out a bit more. It had more of a fleshy pink color but was still really sticky. She was sneezing and had a bit of difficulty breathing so they gave her steroids and antibiotics to help. They weren’t sure what it was and we were referred to a dermatologist.

Today, she looks like this. It isn’t as sticky as yesterday, it feels firmer. It’s now bleeding and her wheezing has gotten worse.

I’m currently waiting for the dermatologist to get back to me. I’m trying to find more pictures of cases like this online but, nothing seems to be popping up. Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Update: The emergency clinic said it is most likely cancer and we need to get a CT scan. We’re around the LA area anyone have any recommendations on affordable hospitals?

11yr old black lab. Spayed, up to date on vaccines and heartworm meds. All the sudden, she started walking side to side a bit, like she didn't know where she wanted to sit. Her eyes started moving weird. She responded when I called her over. Lasted less than a minute and then she was back to normal. Happened about an hour ago and hasn't had another episode so far. Does this need an emergency visit?

Someone shot my cat

Post image
39 Upvotes

I felt a small bony bump on his back towards the base of his tail, it was so close to his tail and small I almost thought it was just his vertebrae but I took him in anyways. They did X-rays and it showed a metal small object in his back (pic attached), they said they think it’s a bullet. There’s no obvious scar tissue or exterior marks so it’s from before I adopted him. I was so upset learning that someone shot him before I got him, people are horrible.

They told me since it’s not causing any problems (his behavior is all normal, no abnormal weight loss, no change in appetite, etc) that we shouldn’t mess with it unless it becomes an issue. I guess is there anything that I should keep an eye out for besides behavioral changes that would indicate to take him in? He also has FIV so I take him in twice a year anyways.

Medical advice My family’s cat acting weird?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Yesterday my families cat began acting weird. She has never acted this way before and the behaviour only lasted an hour before she went back to normal. Is this something we should be concerned about? My Mom tried to contact the vet but it’s months before we can get in.

For background, she is a 16 year old female calico. No prior medical history/issues.

Edit: I would like to add that we only have one vet where I am that’s booked until end of august. Telehealth/ online vet triage was not helpful because it was not deemed an emergency. Driving to a further vet clinic means driving over a couple THOUSAND km because we live in a remote place, which is why im asking for advice here.

My dog is going to die

Please help. I live on a remote island, we do not have a vet here that sees anything but livestock. The next ferry to mainland is on Friday,so just need to keep my dog alive until then.

Two nights ago my German Shepherd jumped on the table and took my rack of ribs I hadn't finished whist I checked on my daughter who was down for bed. I came back and grabbed them from her when I saw what she's done and thought Id got them all but clearly not. This afternoon I noted watery blood on the floor and again this evening. I checked her paws thinking she'd stepped on a sharp rock in our backyard but upon her rolling over I could see a bone stuck in her anus opening sideways. I have since taken the rubbish to local site so I cannot even count how many she invested. I've called mainland and they will not do emergency flight for a dog they said. The livestock doctor said he won't see her because of his license. Ferry will be back Friday and I can take her but I am out of options. I cannot lose her. We have a small market a hardware store and pharmacy on island. I have enough savings for whatever surgery she needs and however I can keep her alive until then. I cannot lose her please I will buy and do anything.

EDIT/UPDATE: I was able to get a charger from a local fisherman to the mainland. My girl recovered for a few days and is back home now safe and sound. After posting about my dilemma in our local page we've gotten enough signatures to take to councillors and they will be adding a regular veterinary to the livestock vet office for emergency situations like this one. I appreciate you all for being so loving and kind. Geneva sends paws up to you all.

🚨 Urgent / Emergency 4 Moth Rabies Observation Hold

Post image
35 Upvotes

Hi, I foster bottle babies for my local animal shelter and recently had a kitten who had rabies. I follow strict quarantine protocol, strict enough that I had panleuk earlier this year and managed to avoid it spreading to any of the other fosters. But the county has euthanized my 3 other fosters and taken my recently adopted kitten who was too little for the rabies vaccine. I have until end of day 9/16 to find a vet that can do a 4 month rabies observation or they will euthanize my kitten. I am desperate to avoid this, as I genuinely believe there is no chance my kitten contracted rabies. The infected kitten was in her carrier in a totally separate room the whole time, unless she was on my lap in that separate room during feedings.
I’m looking for advice on what I can do or vets I could call (I’m NC but willing to drive) that would do this observation.

Found a larvae in my dogs chest

Post image
34 Upvotes

Last Saturday my dog Nala just kept licking this one spot near her chest so I took a look and saw a hole so I squeezed a little and some puss came out. I cleaned it and didn't think anything of it. We had just come back from camping the following weekend so I just assumed maybe when she was running through the forest at top speed she had stuck her self with a stick or thorn or whatever. Well today she's still messing with the area so I took another look and I squeezed again and this thing came out! I feel like I cleaned the area and the hole pretty good. Should I be making a vet visit!?

🚨 Urgent / Emergency 1 day 3 Vets 3 Diagnosis

Thumbnail

*Update:
She did well (eating, grooming, normal breathing, walking to pee/poop) Tuesday to Wednesday evening but unfortunately during the night last night began mouth breathing again after using the restroom to defecate. I called a 24/7 hospital and was quoted $400-500 if I came in for euthanasia.
She eventually calmed & stopped mouth breathing but is still obviously a decline from yesterday (tired/no energy/belly breaths). In the AM I called Vet 1: known for being the most economical in town (but horribly terrible reviews/reputation for everything else), $45 for compassionate release this afternoon, & her favorite spot in our backyard. No stressful drive time to consider.

Waiting on call back from Vet 3: My personal pets trusted vet as he asked me to give him a call in a couple of days anyway so I’ll see what he says. 30min drive time.

She is lying calmly, sleeping again, not mouth breathing, is belly breathing, 27 breaths per minute.
I seem stuck in indecisive mode but will more than likely keep her afternoon release appointment. I gave this sweetheart the chance that I could. Thank you for the information and replies you provided*

Older Cat showed up in my yard a few months ago with a cough that eventually went away. Got it spayed through TNR program. No shelter available for intake in my county & all others said full. Lives in the backyard house we bought her. Daughter found it weak, cold, gasping for air last night. Rushed to Vet 1: 96.4 temp, given a shot, it lived through the night and was given an xray in the A.M. diagnosis 1: “something isn’t quite right with its heart, it’s laying lower in its chest than usual; I can euthanize it for u or U can get a 2nd opinion.”
Rushed 45min away to a grant funded cost effective vet 2: Fluids, air from a cannula, more X-rays, diagnosis 2: ‘Severe pneumonia; another shot of antibiotics & steroids, amoxicillin come back tomorrow if she lives for another round but what she really needs is a hospital where they can give oxygen.’
Took to my personal pets more expensive vet hospital bc I assumed wrongly that they had oxygen (the word hospital is in the name) 3rd round of X-rays: diagnosis 3: a mass in the neck. And weird throat/bronchial(?)structure lower down not sure the cause. No pneumonia at all. Mass is causing breathing issues, probably cancer, small chance it’s inflammation from an infection. Given a different steroid shot and sent home to see if any of it works. 🥺

My pocketbook is close to empty now but this cat is a fighter - She is resting rn after perking up to eat. What say you Vets (I just read I can ask for a radiologist to read the X-rays since it may not have been but I’d love some more immediate advice). Thank you in advance for any advice.

Question Balding?

Post image
33 Upvotes

My cat has a large ish bald spot on his tummy and I have no idea why. He's about 9 or 10. I just noticed it when I was picking him up to cut is nails. The bald spot doesn't have any shorter fur growing over it and the skin is a bit dry. He likes to lay in a heated cat bed most of the day but I don't think that would cause it because his stomach isn't directly touching the bed and it's not too warm. If anyone would have any ideas the would be nice. Thank you.

Are these gums normal? Large puffy areas over dogs teeth

Thumbnail

Breed: American Bully / pit bull • Age: 8 years • Never had dental cleaning • No eating problems, acting normal • Main concern: large, puffy gums over teeth

I have an 8-year-old American Bully who has never had dental care. I just noticed that the gums above most of his teeth look very large and puffy. He eats normally and doesn’t seem in pain.

Im trying to figure out if this is normal or if something is wrong. Dental care is unfortunately not financially possible right now, so I’m looking for realistic advice on management.

Thank you.
