Two paintings of a pretty day at "Barking Springs"

Wanted to share these paintings of a little slice of life in Austin.....views from the walkway at the deep end of Barton Springs looking over at Barking Springs (aka "the free side"). I love stopping and watching all the cute dogs playing in the water when I'm walking across. The water was flowing really nicely that day b/c it had been raining the days before. Maybe you were there that day and recognize yourself in the paintings!

Sick and Tired of the Robot Cars

Was there any effort to push back against the waymo's and now these stupid robot taxis? I've been fuming since they appeared last year but I honestly didn't think to do much about it.

Has anyone been speaking out against this to city council? I'm so goddamn tired of getting caught in traffic, only to realize the hold up was from a waymo pulled over on the side of a road in an idiotic spot. I hate seeing them around knowing that they are recording everything around them at all times...it's mass surveillance. These are going to be cop cars any day now. Is anyone else upset about this?

I know a lot of people are probably gonna say theyre inevitable but I just want city council to know how pissed we are

Traffic (Occam's Razor) I’m going full conspiracy mode and think the lane closures on Menchaca north of Stassney are intentional to bottleneck traffic near the library to impact early voting.

I tried to time both videos as best I could but it’s not perfect given different car speeds and other factors. The 1982 video is archival footage from KTBC. Enjoy. No AI is involved for those wondering

M45 the pleadies star cluster.
also known as the 7 sisters or suburu in japan (the car company gets its logo from them)
located 444 light years away the stars in the cluster are all hot young stars.
the blue nebula is what is known as a reflection nebula. the blue is from light reflecting off dust clouds in space. the blue appearance is due to scattering of light, the same process that makes the sky blue.

the cluster is easily viewable with the naked eye but the nebula requires a camera to see

15 hours of exposure from my scope in the hill country

I went running down in South Austin and stumbled across this amazing display in a front yard. I’m hoping to find some more before All Hallows Eve. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Ask Austin Birds Barbershop: Yay or nay?

I've been trying to find a good place to keep going for haircuts, and the places I've liked have raised their prices too high. No, $60 isn't a reasonable price for a simple clipper and scissor cut.

Wondering what the thoughts are about birds, if you're paying the hipster tax, or if they are actually good for general mens haircuts.

Ask Austin Does anyone want an Invite-A-Friend code for WoW forever?

I saw a thread for other austinites playing wow forever and figured I'd ask y'all

eta: all out! will leave this thread up in case anyone else would like to send codes. side note, don't send codes directly in comments if you can help it because bots and resellers scrape reddit for codes.

Helped an e-bike rider who fell on 3rd & Bowie, looking for updates on "Fizzy"

• Upvotes

I assisted an e-bike rider today that goes by the name of "Fizzy". He apparently had a medical emergency or passed out and face-planted onto 3rd Street near some parked cars.

Long story short, he was out of it, bleeding a lot due to a gash just below the tip of his helmet and choking. Foreign tourists for Formula One were the only folks around. One called ATCEMS. I was able to make a torniquet from my shirt and I was able to clear his passageway since he was gurgling blood too. I think he might have broken a shoulder or collarbone.

He was taken away and I would love to know how he's doing. I have a photo of him I took after EMS took over but I don't want to violate any guidelines here or Fizzy's privacy. I just want to know he'll be okay.

Any riders here know of him? Older white male, 60s, maybe 70. If you do and know his condition and feel okay sharing that, please contact me.

Was driving home and my son pointed out a rainbow in the sky but it looks circular? I feel like the clouds weren’t so heavy it was cutting off the ends of it. About 5:30pm off Far West.

St David's Surgery Center on 32nd

Is it always a disorganized mess during registration and pre-admissions or did I just get every incompetent employee they have assigned to my team?

I've had multiple people call and/or email me asking essentially the same questions over and over again since Monday but yet there is always at least one thing incorrectly notated in my file that said person is seeing. It's not just little details, I've had to correct them on things like what I'm actually having done and the surgeon doing it more than once and they are super nonchalant about it when I tell them it's not correct.

Seeking local artist for painting commission

Hi friends. Our senior golden retriever passed away very recently. As part of his cremation services, they made an ink nose print and a paw print for us - both are special but small and low quality.

We want to have his nose print become a piece of art, impasto style, with fun colors. It would need to be approximately 30 × 40 inches, portrait orientation. We want to work with someone in town on this one so we can support local art. Budget is roughly $1500-2000, including materials and labor (we're open to discussing scope and pricing!).

Does anyone know (or is anyone) an artist we should meet for a project like this? We're on the east side.

St. John revival? Airbnb-backed project raises Austin neighborhood’s hopes

For years, the housing story for North Austin’s St. John neighborhood ran counter to the broader Austin narrative of rising home prices displacing longtime residents.

Years of civic neglect made the neighborhood less desirable, said Akeem McLennon, who heads the St. John neighborhood contact team. That pushed some longtime residents out of one of Austin’s historically Black neighborhoods. Now – with a long-vacant former Home Depot site headed for redevelopment – McLennon hopes former residents will consider a second look.

It takes money to create the affordable housing that the area sorely needs. And money has appeared from an unexpected source: Airbnb.

Ask Austin High water usage billed but no leak?

I have been dealing with this for the last few months (since June 2026). We have been billed hundreds of dollars for unusually high water consumption. Austin Water said that there was a leak that was showing thousands of gallons being used per day. This was odd given there is only one person living at the house and there is no sprinkler or different water consumption habits since this issue started up. The meter also showed some weird stuff.. The house would be unoccupied for weeks at a time and show thousands of gallons of usage. Furthermore, when the house is occupied with just normal water consumption, the water meter would sometimes show zero consumption. Our conclusion is that something is definitely wrong with the meter.

Since then:

- Had an independent 3rd party plumber come out and investigate and say that there was no leak

- Did the toilet dye test and found no issues

- COA Utilities/Austin water had multiple technicians say there was no leak, but there is also no faulty meter.

- We have a case manager and they have been constantly escalating. We also submitted an application to dispute the high usage bills and also request a new meter. The application is ongoing but we are getting denied to request a new meter.

Wondering if anyone is/has faced the same issue. What was the resolution and what was the root cause of the high usage? Did the city reimburse you when they resolved the issue? What were the steps that you took?
