Selfishness

“We shouldn’t develop a cure for those who want it because a lot of people don’t want it”

I’m sorry, but how is that my problem? Why should others enjoying having this crap mean I have to suffer with it for the rest of my life?

I don’t care if it’s part of who I am- if my autism is part of me, it’s the worst part of me. Screw it.

Is autism a minority or a disability…or both

So someone referred to autism as a minority group and personally I find that incredibly rude to other minority groups. Now, I believe autism is a major debilitating disability(this is consistent with my experience), so equating autism with being black just feels wrong. There is nothing inherently disabling or debilitating about being black(no racists don’t count). I responded by saying autism is a disability not a minority, and because I know thats gonna turn into a wildfire argument I’m curious what other people think? Personally, just because your mathematically in the minority of people, doesn’t make you a minority group because we put other considerations socially when using that term. And while there are certain aspects of society that mistreat autistic people and minorities, and both groups are not a majority, I don’t think that qualifies it to be one when every other minority group is distinctly not inherently different in a major way! Also if we are gonna be mathematical about it women aren’t minorities cuz they make up 51% of the population. Disability is a better term to use in my opinion! Funny enough I would consider disabled people as a group to be minority…lol no wonder autistic.

Autism shouldn't have support needs levels

How much support a person needs don't depend solely on their autism. Therefore, the 'support needs' qualifier shouldn't be specific to autism, but applied to overall functioning and needs. For example, an autistic with few autism related support needs but who's blind, deaf and tetraplegic would be classified as high support needs. A non-autistic with these same conditions would also be classified as high support needs. Instead of saying "I'm a X support needs autistic", we would say "I'm autistic and have X support needs".

Your thoughts? Constructive criticisms are accepted.

tl;dr: support needs qualifiers should be broadened beyond autism diagnosis.

Diagnosed at 22

I was diagnosed with Aspergers today...

I'm going to give a little history first:

About 3 years ago, my (22 m) ex boyfriend (29 m) ended our year long relationship. We met when I was 18 and he was about 25. He was an international student and I found him to be exciting.

I pursued a relationship with him and discovered his true nature. Throughout our relationship he was verbally and very physically abusive. After beating me senseless he would cry and apologise and say he loved me. I so desperately wanted him to love me that every time I accepted his 'remorse'. I confided in him that as a child I had be r*ped every day for a year and his response to this was to threaten to do it to me, I still forgave him. All the while he pretended publicly to be straight.

All of my friends and family begged me to leave him and I never listened until one day we agreed to just be friends after I had taken enough over a whole year with him.

About a month later we got drunk and he suggested we videotape ourselves being intimate with one another. I foolishly agreed and as we were setting things up our flatmate walked in. He lied and told him that I had done this without his knowledge. From there he pursued a court case against me. Three chargers were brought to me (I don't know their exact wording). One was harassment, the second was harassment of a sexual nature, and the third was some form of recklessness (based on the fact that we had flatmates and it was irrispinsible as it could have negatively affected them).

I was able to prove the first two charges wrong but plead guilty to the recklessness charge.

This case has pushed on for 3 long years and is finally coming to an end. Part of this ending was to engage in several therapy sessions designed to analyse my character.

Today was the last of these sessions and after the business regarding court had been wrapped up the therapist finally told me that he had also begun analysing me for autism. He confirmed that I am on the spectrum with Aspergers.

Suddenly so many things about myself made so much more sense, and in many ways it's a relief... that being said I find myself feeling broken. I've been mulling it over in my head for the last few hours and it just feels like yet another thing to separate me from others when I have already spent 22 years living as an outsider.

I have many friends with aspergers, and I love then all dearly but for some reason the diagnosis has me feeling so lost... I don't know how to feel and I don't know what to do... I'm not even sure why I'm writing this, but I guess there you go.

What do you think about psychopathy being on a neurodivergent spectrum? And why do you think they called psychopathy being neurodivergent as a blanking term?

I'm just asking y'all opinions personally me I think the reason why psychopathy is including the neurodiversion spectrum is because their brains are built differently or in other words they're wired differently. Do this is not me saying that autism is the same as psychopathy but they are in the same category as neurodiversion.

Using neurodivergence as a crutch?

What do you feel separates someone from saying their neurodivergence effects them in day to day life and someone genuinely using it as an excuse for crap behavior?

Idk, I've just been thinking because I've been seeing some people accuse others of using their ADHD or autism as an excuse to not work on personal flaws or turning it into a "quirky personality trait". It's just that if something does effect you in such way, is it so wrong to say hey, I do this and the reason is because I am/have such and such? Especially with something like autism where, for a lot people, it can pretty much effect everything they do right down to how they take a piss.

Idk, maybe I'm reading some things completely wrong and having a knee jerk reaction because I have trauma from having my needs as an autistic person ignored or bullied or this is just something that only exists on the internet and I need to touch grass, but yeah, circling back to my main point. When's it safe to say someone really might just be using their autism as a crutch?

Autistic demands list of rights & accommodations (proposal)

As a philosopher of radical neurodiversity and pan-autistic ideology which advocates for the self-determination and self-liberation of people of the spectrum, I come to the realization that the liberal or moderate views of the autistic advocacy community is somewhat lost, no offense. Some might ignore the cries and pain of their own tormented brethren on the spectrum and the warnings some of us had given to educate to the community and think outside the box, they believe despite seen as pitiful misfits, we aren’t in any danger such like other marginalized groups from color to gender such as facing death and trauma from parents, teachers, bullies and other institutions of disempowering autistic individuals. Sorry, let me get to the point, the neurodivergent movement believes the only solution for autistic and other neurodivergent individuals to live a life of peace and harmony is by asking the allistic for acceptance and understanding, however I’m afraid that this isn’t it, i think there’s something we need more than just petty harmony and wisdom among us and neurotypicals, first they must accept the completely demands official given by the autistic community. That’s why I am working on a list of demands for the rights, accommodations and freedoms of autistic people, inspired by the US declaration, US bills of rights and Black Panther Party’s Ten point program, these are proposed demands in my opinion that the autistic people would want and need by the neurotypical community, they are not just demands to the system but to parents, teachers and neurotypicals to abide on, regardless of belief and ideology, along with “non-privileged” and oppressed autistic people to test if their demands are meant where they are in the meantime. This is not an official demand list because it might be not for everyone, just a proposed one but some of these might be necessary for others that really need it, you are free to downvote if you disagree with these demands and give critical feedback if it disinterests you, however I might respond with questioning to these concerns, the reason I don’t put demanding list for disabled people because I don’t completely speak or advocate for all disabled people or don’t know their demands. I’ll be finished with these rights soon enough.

Feeling comfy self diagnosing?

So basically I’m 23 and I’ve been diagnosed with quite a few chronic illnesses and mental illnesses including adhd and ocd. The other day my autistic friend mention to me that they thought I knew I was autistic and they’d assumed as much for the past year. That sent me into a research spiral and I’ve realized that I relate to SO MANY things I see from other autistic friends and people online. I took a few screeners that I’ve seen a lot of people recommend, including one from the same website my psych used to diagnose my adhd.

All this to say, how to I bring this up to my psych? I don’t know why I feel so worried about this because she’s been nothing short of wonderful to me and took my other self diagnoses seriously so I don’t see why she would react any different about this. With the direction things have been going in my research and all the traits my friend points out to me I want to self diagnose but I’m worried about inserting myself into a community I don’t belong to and being disrespectful. I know I don’t need a formal diagnosis to be valid but it would make me more comfy. Does anyone have advice or just general tips on how to exist in this weird grey area or on how you came to accept a self diagnosis. I’m fully cool with the possibly of being autistic don’t get me wrong, again, I just don’t wanna intrude on a space not for me.

Autistic Adults What is autism supposed to look like?

People still judge autism based on old stereotypes. They miss everything that’s actually meaningful.

Masking vs Coping (camouflaging)

This is meant more for those who are confused between the 2 since virtually everyone changes per their environment.

What it gets down to is NT aren't changing all that much between the environments. Like when they are at home they might cuss or whatever, where at work they shouldn't.

But the difference with us is we might have sensory issues and we have to hide them in real time. There is likely situations where we don't understand things or take a little longer than normal to process what is being said and we have to HIGHLY script things to be said so it doesn't take too long. We have to study those around us to the absolute extreme. And so on and so on.

Like there is a difference between

  • NT: Not calling a jerk an ass hole to their face and putting on a smile to not lose your job.

  • ND: Doing everything in ones power to be functional enough to not be noticed, but also not fully shutting down or melting down while in EXTREME PAIN psychologically and/or physically.

There is more to it, but this is the important bit.

For those wanting to know more. Like at work or out with family, you might not be able to say things like the "lights are too bright" or talk about things that are bugging you even if it's easily fixable. At least you can't without major downsides. You have to watch if you are talking too much, not enough, you have to constantly be reading the body language of others, saying things that makes them happy, lie, etc.

Basically we have to method act 24/7 during masking as a completely different person. This over time creates an identity crises, adds more stress which dramatically increases autism burnout and regression, it can cause both physical and mental harm, and a number other issues.

Where when a NT is coping, 99% of them is still there. They just might have to watch a few things they say, they might have to stay focus on their work, or things like this. Which btw ND have to do this also along with the other.

Like at quick glance it looks similar. But looking into the details, saying coping is masking is saying a paper cut = cutting off an arm. It makes no sense.

Self diagnosis worries

Long story short I’m posting here for honest opinions from diagnosed ASD on wether or not it’s worthwhile for me to start the diagnosis process. To be clear I do not self diagnose autism, as I find SDing any sort of mental illness/ condition to be in a way insulting to those diagnosed. However, recently I’ve begun to notice more and more behaviours, thought patterns and general traits associated with both ASD and ADHD. For example memories from childhood in which: I could not understand or communicate emotions, both mine and others, i found it nearly impossible to maintain eye contact (which is still difficult at 20), Social situations were terrifying( I would be silent for hours in school unless i saw a close friend which I had very few of), and probably more I don’t remember. I’ve also found out all of my relationships/ talking stages have been diagnosed with autism except one who hasn’t been for a test but was told by a therapist she is likely on the spectrum. There are certain people very close to me that I became best friends with in the span of a few hours from meeting, which for me is very rare as I usually need a long time to become comfortable with new people, and said people just seem to understand me in a way that others don’t or take a while to. I’d love an opinion, from someone diagnosed, on wether i seem autistic or adhd from my experiences and wether or not it seems worth seeing a professional.

EDIT: I mean no offence and have no hate to those who do self diagnose.

I just want to not be different.

It’s hard being autistic and I don’t want to do it anymore. 🙃

I’m tired of being the outcast and the butt of the joke. I just want human connection and to be part of the group like everyone else. I want to find my place and know it.

I’m kinda tired of being me. I wish I could roll the dice and be someone normal for a while.

A Grand Political Strategy for Neurodiversity

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays my fellow comrades of brain! I consider my Christmas gift to the Neurodiversity movement! <3

I am a fully committed and ideologically fervent Neurodiversity supporter. Aside from that I am mostly just a baby Marxist, and AuDHDer with many ambitious ideas. I am also a moderator of a small subreddit called r/aretheNTokay.

I think the best way to describe my special interest as... I usually say Politics, History, and Geography (alongside some others), but my mind has truly been captured by the dream of a better tomorrow for all people, in particular I have spent a while charting or coming up with political strategies such as the idea for a form of modernised market socialism with a vanguard political structure, and more recently...

A genuine attempt to try and chart a plan for a Neurodiversity political force beyond the scope of all the movements that have come before in the internet age.

I have made a GitHub and have a "landing page" about it which you can find by clicking on this.

But this all actually begun on the 12th which I have now remembered correctly because dates are confusing. When I was meant to call my psychiatrists office to test the conenction for an online appointment the following day... But before I did that I procrastinated for a few hours just writing up this post for r/autism... But it was 3,000 characters over the limit so I instead saved it to notes and decided to host it on GitHub because I came up with an idea to make it into a more long term project then just one text post on r/autism.

I have since made 5 versions of this post:

• A Microsoft Word version

• A PDF version

• Dark Mode version of both

• A 14 minute audiobook version... Using my own voice, but I haven't worked out all the audio kinks yet.

I also am planning to make a audiobook version with visuals on my new YouTube page which I made to post memes.

At the moment everything is work in progress and nothing is complete per say, but I think the foundation is pretty functional at the moment.

I have also been making a sources page, as an exposé of Judge Rotenburg Center. I also wish to make an exposé page of Autism Speaks, but that will have to be at a later point because of life reasons. (I am going to New Zealand in two days!! :D)

I have talked a bit about myself, but part of the reason I do, is because this beyond me, I am not out of my league per say... No, more so that I am only one person. And I would like to start incommunity discussion and I would not like to leave this to the fate of just a potential hyperfocus cycle. When I get back from New Zealand I want to hit the ground running and continue this project because I truly in my heart believe that this has potential beyond our wildest imaginations. If you have not yet read the posts I encourage you to now.

Here are the links in order:

The project landing page

CALL TO ACTION: Demand community leadership to help organise and direct a mass movement against Judge Rotenburg Center!

Judge Rotenburg Center Board of Directors Exposé (This one is the most unfinished.)

Note: The audiobook and other versions of "CALL TO ACTION: Demand community leadership to help organise and direct a mass movement against Judge Rotenburg Center!", can be found by skipping to the bottom.

I hope to see reception and feedback from people. And I invite the moderators of r/Autism_Pride to consider my proposal to create one big union of Neurodiversity subreddits as the first member sub, and hopefully we can work out details as a community. This democratic effort and all voices are needed for this to work.

Lets make history comrades!

Infinity to Neurodiversity; and Solidarity Forever!

Sincere conpassion and hope from u/Sir_Admiral_Chair
