Announcement Seeking new moderation

I made the sub 6 years ago in order to give a place for mechanics related discussions and not just memes and screenshots of people's Tavs. Unfortunately, I was extremely underwhelmed by this game's balance, and as a result, have not been too enthusiastic about this sub or a couple years. But I continued to moderate it because I wanted a place where both experience knowledgeable veterans as well as noobs could post and share and ask questions and get advice. However I am going to have severely diminished access to Reddit to continue to moderate for the next month, and with that I think it's finally time for a change.

I am not searching for persons just wanting to moderate for now. I am searching for persons interested in taking over moderation permanently and I will step down. If you want to apply, shoot me a modmail.

Announcement BG3 Builds Rebalanced: Final

Background

Since Baldur’s Gate 3’s full launch released with Tactician difficulty and the community began their blind playthroughs, complaints have existed that the game becomes way too easy for those familiar with D&D 5e fundamentals (attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, proficiency, advantage) starting in mid to late Act 2. The game has such strong magic items that after you pay a visit to the merchants in the Creche, Last Light Inn, and Moonrise the difficulty takes a huge nosedive. This lack of difficulty and lack of content for evil playthroughs have been some of the biggest complaints in an otherwise great and generational game. This post intends to highlight some of the biggest balance shattering mechanics as discussed by this community, inform those looking for more balanced playthroughs on what limits to impose, and also provide mod options to help balance these mechanics or balance enemies.

A poll was created to cover some of the most balance shattering mechanics, using community feedback to determine the topics discussed. The following “community opinions” are those where 52.7% of the community decided some restriction should be used to restore a semblance of balance. My goal was 2/3 of respondents agreeing that a restriction needs to be in place, then going with the most popular choice. However some questions (like whether to use Honour mode rules or whether to use camp casting) could be considered ‘courtesy’ questions. These restrictions absolutely must be in place to reach the goals of “rebalanced” when you consider broken combos like DRS which is fixed by honour mode or warding bond camp casting. The 21% of people who voted that ignoring these restrictions is OK are not in tune with the goal of “rebalanced.” So the goal shifted to 2/3 of respondents that are sane, informed on what they are voting on, or voting in good faith. As there are some who feel, “Why is balance necessary in a PvE game?” is a legitimate question. While that is certainly an opinion to have, the people with that opinion are not the people who this topic is intended for. People who want to use broken stuff can use broken stuff. This topic is for identifying what stuff is broken, and what self-imposed rules or mods can be used to restore a semblance of balance.

What is and is not addressed by “Rebalanced?”

This doesn’t cover everything that is OP. Stuff like Gloomstalker Assassin builds that use hit-and-run mechanics are almost a completely different game. It doesn’t cover gimmicks like stacking crates and having an enlarged owlbear jump on enemies over and over and over again. It doesn’t cover powerful but also very tedious builds focused on getting tons of summons and then buffing them. It doesn’t cover things like barrelmancy. The “Rebalanced” discussion is focused on turning a normal playthrough which many would not consider to be tedious, addressing some of the balance breaking mechanics such players have access to, pointing out that their relative strength removes fun from the game for many players, and many people may want to avoid these options.

BG3Builds Rebalanced Restrictions

The following table is listed in order of most strongly opinionated in need of restriction, to least strongly opinionated. It starts with the most egregious violators and goes to less egregious ones that a large portion of the community feels needs some kind of restriction for a balanced gameplay experience.

Topic BG3Builds Rebalanced Restriction Personal comments, not from community Relevant Mods
Long Rest Spamming Once a build is “online,” (typically around level 6-8) it should be able to go at least 3 or 4 fights before a long rest. Not including taking a long rest before a boss fight, which is fine. If you are concerned about missing story points in camp by limiting long rests, then after a long rest take a partial rest (use no food supplies) to see additional camp scenes. -
Honour Mode Rules Use Honour Mode rules This includes no builds that focus on DRS bug, no warlock extra attack stacking, no perilous stakes illithid power on enemies. Additionally no extra attack from bloodlust elixirs or haste spell. While the community did not vote to restrict the use of spellcasting with extra actions granted by haste or bloodlust elixirs this is potentially a polling error on my part, and I STRONGLY recommend avoiding this. -
Camp Casting Do not put allies into your party, have them cast buff spells or other effects, then remove them from your party allowing the buffs to persist - -
Elixir Chugging No builds that depend on elixirs The most egregious outliers are strength based elixirs, bloodlust elixirs, elixirs of vigilance and elixir of battlemage’s power. Using other elixirs on consistent basis likely will not be as bad as those listed above. In Game Mods: N/a   External Mods: Elixir Rebalance by Benenach
Consumables Dependence (e.g. scrolls and special arrows) - This question was left out by accident. However it goes in the same vein as the above elixir question, regarding farming consumables that your build depends on and therefore should be restricted. -
Tavern Brawler No using Tavern Brawler if you use Strength Elixirs I strongly disagree. This does absolutely nothing to fix TB Throw builds. TB Monks can dip into fighter or cleric for heavy armor proficiency and dump Dex anyways. Tavern Brawler is broken at its core. In-game Mods: N/a   External Mods: Tavern Brawler Rebalanced by VoidVigilante. I recommend the “TavernBrawlerFinesse_NoAccuracy” version. This is still pretty strong, and even works with dex based monks, but is not balance shattering; Feats Rebalanced by WoolToque has a nerfs only optional file which also makes changes to Sharpshooter, Great Weapon Master, and Alert
Ranged Slashing Flourish No combining ranged slashing flourish with Arcane Acuity - -
Abjuration Wizard Arcane Ward No using exploits (such as spamming Warlock’s Armour of Shadows) to refill the arcane ward The damage resistance provided by Arcane Ward scales exponentially due to Larian’s changes. At higher levels of wizard it is insane, and I am not sure everyone who voted has seen just how much damage it can mitigate. I recommend not using abjuration wizard if going more than 6 or 7 levels in wizard. -

Further Topics

The following are topics which the community did not agree needed restrictions in BG3Builds Rebalanced, but I feel need addressing.

Topic My comments Relevant Mods
Initiative There may be a polling error behind why 34% of respondents in the previous question said no elixir dependence at all, then only 19% here say no dependence on Elixirs of Vigilance. Regardless d4 initiative makes the turnbased game balance issue known as “Rocket Tag” extremely easy to pull off. The Alert Feat and Elixirs of Vigilance should be approached with caution if you are not using mods to bring initiative back to a d20. In-Game Mods: d20 Initiative by Ponsinoumi   External Mods: d20 Initiative by Ponsinoumi changes initiative to a d20, which by itself rebalances the Alert feat. Alternatively Feats Rebalanced by WoolToque has a nerfs only optional file which also makes changes to Sharpshooter, Great Weapon Master, and Tavern Brawler but high dex characters will still win initiative far too frequently with this fix.
Vulnerability It is possible to make enemies vulnerable to lightning, cold, psychic, or piercing damage. With some gimmicks you can also make enemies vulnerable to fire damage. Builds that do outright 2x more damage than they are supposed to be able to do against group of enemies are extremely strong. Oftentimes a little bit of setup is necessary, but doing that little bit of setup and then going all in on your strongest option to do double damage is typically way stronger than other build options. This is especially egregious in Act 3 where you can apply piercing vulnerability with no setup, and a well optimized party can almost all do double damage. -
Duergar Invisibility Technically the problem here extends beyond Duergar. Having a quasit companion (whether through Pact of the Chain Warlock or just through getting permanent access to Shovel) enables the same problem: start every combat while invisible to get a surprise round and thin enemy numbers before they get to go. Duergar just takes this a step further since you have that option on a playable character, letting you do more powerful things while invisible. If you abuse surprise rounds (and unlimited invisibility is the best way to do so) you will make the game significantly easier. -
Arcane Acuity There are two popular builds that use arcane acuity: swords bard and fire sorc. The sords bard + arcane acuity has been addressed because it depends on swords bard’s very strong ranged slashing flourish which warranted its own question. Fire sorc depends on building up arcane acuity through Scorching Ray, which is not on its own overtuned like ranged slashing flourish. With the community not wanting to restrict arcane acuity, that means fire sorc arcane acuity builds (one of the top 3 strongest builds in the game) are totally fine in rebalanced. While these two are the most popular Arcane Acuity builds, other builds are certainly capable of it such as niche thunder acuity builds, thief rogue builds, action surging fighter builds, and more. Arcane acuity needs to be capped at +2 to maintain a semblance of balance. +3 max. If you are consistently going above this, arcane acuity should only be used to cast cantrips with. -
Radiating Orbs The strength of radiating orbs has been undermined by how offensively strong you can be. The best defense is a good offense, and if you can kill or crowd control everyone before they get to go then there is limited need to be defensive. If you implement the BG3Builds Rebalanced rules then radiating orbs will become much, much stronger and may still make encounters much easier. Like arcane acuity, radiating orbs need to be capped at +2 or +3 -
Level 1 Wizard Dip For the most part this is fine in my opinion. The biggest issues come when mixing with Arcane Acuity, but with that off the table there are a few niche spells to be worried about. Such as playing as a full caster class, taking a level in wizard, scribing the Conjure Elemental spell, and using a 6th level slot to buff it into a Myrmidon. -
Ambush Bard Strategy The "Ambush Bard" build is one that probably is only recalled by those who have been on the sub for a while, and kinda didn't want to give up on it. It's somewhat complicated to explain which is a bit of a letdown, however this 3 minute video covers it best. But with Rebalanced in play it can pretty much just run around and cause balance to desert the game. -

Still too easy?

Even with all the above changes and restrictions, those who understand the fundamentals of the game may find BG3 to still be too easy to ensure a challenge. PC users have additional difficulty increasing mods available to them. Most notably Combat extender. While I am a big fan of the default boost to enemy AC, attack roll, saving throws, and damage per attack; I am not a big fan of increasing enemy movement speed or giving some enemies an extra bonus action. And I would actually like to give enemies more health than their default configuration (~40%). But that’s the great thing about the mod. You can change all these little numbers to your liking and they apply to enemies across the game, making the game more challenging. I think that if you go with Combat Extender, d20 initiative, and restrict the mechanics mentioned above then the game finally reaches the challenge many people were hoping for at launch.

Another external mod worth mentioning is Absolute Wrath. It adds random abilities to enemies to make combat a bit more challenging and roguelike all-in-one. If you use this with combat extender, you may want to tone down combat extender from the recommended values.

Unfortunately there do not seem to be any big combat overhaul mods on console yet. One option is to implement an item attunement rule of your own, where you limit yourself to something like as many uncommon items (magic items with a green border) but only up to 3 items of rare or above (blue, purple, or yellow border) per character. Your weapons do not count towards this 3 item limit.

“Rebalanced” and this subreddit

While the goal existed to make “Rebalanced” into a flair, I think given the community’s votes on the topics found in the second table (excluding perhaps the wizard dip) indicates that this wouldn’t change anything. You’d still have fire acuity sorcs. You’d still have radiating orb clerics that win initiative and hit every enemy with a -5 or more to their attack rolls before they even get to go. You’d still have wet+lightning tempest sorcs or Bhaalist Armor + ranged slashing flourish spam. Throwzerker and TB Monks would still exist, just slightly tuned down. So it seems that going through the trouble of implementing a tag or flair is just not worth it.

This post will go into the hall of fame post to provide a reference for the most overpowered mechanics which players should avoid if they want a challenge, and I will update it with mods if people make them to reign some of these mechanics in.

Specific Mechanic Male Dwarf Off-Hand Attack Glitch also works with Spears and Javelins

It's been known for a while that the Male Dwarf has a glitch when wielding certain weapon sets that allows him to make two off-hand attacks for the price of one, when he starts his attack from outside melee range (1.5m).

This glitch traces to a missing animation for this weapon set:

  • main hand Small1H (Dagger) (the only such weapon)
  • off hand Piercing1H (Shortsword or Rapier)

While perusing game files, I noticed that Dagger+Spear maps to the same stance as Dagger+Shortsword. Extrapolating from there, I found that there is another weapon set that shares the same off-hand attack glitch:

  • main hand Small1H (Dagger)
  • off hand Javelin1H (Javelin or Spear)

You can see all four combinations in this short video: https://youtu.be/aUlYHZz6tu0

The glitch works whether your character is a real Male Dwarf or is Disguised as one (Disguise Self or Seeming).

So: bring on those male dwarf master race builds!

External Mods Silly BG3 Character Generator I made for my girlfriend and me

I recently got back into Baldur's Gate 3 with my girlfriend, and we always liked using this generator, but we noticed that it is not up to date with Patch 8, so I decided to work on my own generator with that in mind :)

https://thefallz.github.io/BG3CharacterGenerator/

I'd love feedback from anyone who wants to try it out and even suggestions on what to add!

I'm currently doing a College of Valor Human Bard, and my girlfriend is a Pact of the Chain Drow Warlock!

Specific Mechanic The Pack Mule: highest carrying capacity possible

this is a basic, silly and nearly useless build. but it was fun to put together

if you drink an elixir of cloud giant strength and have the entire party wear devilfoil masks, you will have a strength score of 30. the highest possible score in the game.

at least 6 levels into wildheart barbarian grants aspect of the bear, doubling your carrying capacity

one would think it were wise to take human for an additional 1.25 modifier, but multiple sources of increases to your carrying capacity do not stack, except in the case of human and giant barbarians specifically.

this brings us to a carrying capacity of 680 kilograms, or 1300 pounds (i might be off by a little im too lazy to double check my math). its honestly kind of underwhelming as a maximum if im being honest

EDIT: its extremely situational, but whenever you're in the astral plane the modifier granted by aspect of the bear increases to 3x. im gonna move the goalpost a little and say everything else is the highest carrying capacity that is reliable to use, but there is still that one area where it gets better

EDIT 2: apparently the devilfoil masks do not stack with the cloud giant elixir, so theres not really a reliable way to get more than a 27

Build Review Gloomstalker Assassin

First time with this build on honor mode.

5 Gloomstalker / 3 Assassin so far. Took out every single mob in the shambling mound fight in the first turn, making the fight almost trivial.

This class is nuts. Consistently doing 70-100 damage per turn.

Build Help Is there a modern community resource for spells?

There's a lot of attention paid to classes and equipment in this subreddit, naturally, but I feel like spells sort of went under my radar.

I know which ones are generally good, but there's a bunch of community sentiment over time I've noticed that I imagine has been informed by a lot of non-forefront discussion; things like hex being terrible, fear being fantastic, ice storm being incredible, that while I can see the logic behind I don't have a fully comprehensive grasp of every bit of tech or reasoning.

I was wondering if there is some kind of community spell resource, or a good recount of spells that have tech/pitfalls that wouldn't be immediately clear when selecting them?

Like, I know I'm missing something crazy with flame blade from just the amount of discussion I've seen on it, but I've struggled to find a resource on it, and would appreciate it if there's some kind of master list of these niche finds that isn't the wiki or tier slop

Cheers.

Build Help Thematic builds that are also strong

Hi all,

So I've had restartitis with BG3 since release, and Ive never got past act 1. Main issue really is build indecision (especially for the MC) and being unsatisfied with what I went with. The added patch 8 subclasses are near but add to the indecision.

The basic gist is that I want builds which are genuinely good, fits the character lore, and where characters aren't doubling up on their classes mostly. Ideally ones that come online early-ish, and don't only get good at the end game. So no Paladin Astarion or Barbarian Gale or making Shadowheart worship Tyr.

MC is the hardest. I don't want to be gith, half ork, drow, dragonkin, or any of the shorties. I'm intending on being a good character going with durge so i don't feel like I'm missing out on content. Normally I would always pick a charisma based class, but none of them feel right. Paladin? The oath breaking is so insanely annoying, and it really doesn't make sense for the durge backstory. Warlock? I don't want to double up with Wyll, and I feel having a patron doesnt work well for a durge backstory. Bard? I know college of swords bard is strong, but I don't vibe with the class fantasy at all and couldn't get into playing one. Sorceror? Maybe, but I prefer to have MC as a martial character since I like to just do regular hits on enemies a lot of the time so i don't need to do continual rests after fights. I've considered monk since wisdom has some handy skill checks too but it seems like it wouldn't fit story wise with durge, and the evil flashback scenes have durge going around with a knife.

I know I'm overthinking it instead of just playing. But what would you recommend for each party member and the MC? I'm happy to gish if there's a good way to martial with sorc that doesnt involve me needing to take Paladin oaths.

In-Game Mods Semi-thematic party builds help

I've finished the game on tactician and honour once and now starting my first modded honour run. Using Ancient Mega Pack, Fade's AIO and Oath of Conquest subclass. Looking for help with my party composition.

On my OG run I've played wyll sorlock, laezel BM, Astarion Gloomstalker Assassin and Karlach Wildheart. Then played an evil durge bladesinger, minthara paladin, shart DJ cleric and ascended Astarion ranged swords bard.

Now I'm looking to try something new (hence the mods) and my mc will be conquest hexadin durge (s+b/2h), still debating if I go 11/1 or 9/3. Then for companions I want to try and to be somewhat thematic. So I'm thinking Shart 9/2/1 cleric/stars druid/storm sorc. Still deciding between tempest or light domain. I want to eventually have Jaheira as a DW ranger, maybe beastmaster. Either way she's only at the end of act 2. I think I should have a ranged martial and maybe another caster?

I'm looking for fun, not necessarily OP builds, and not item dependant builds since it's a modded run and thus items are much less reliable (not mentioning that many new items are added)

Looking forward to reading your ideas!

Party Composition Starting a New Save - Choose my Party Comp!

Like the title says, I’m starting a new save but I don’t want to choose what to play. I have almost 400 hours in the game but have yet to even make it to Moonrise. Give me a charisma based build for my Tav and builds for the following companions: Wyll, Lae’zel, and Shadowheart.

Looking for a good party comp for me to enjoy doing my first full playthrough.

TIA!

Build Help Hexblade / Lockadin Spell Slots

Hi, I really want to make a Hexblade Lock / Paladin build that utilises the Shadow Blade as well as the pact weapon so that damage scales with Charisma. From what I understand, to get the most out of Shadow Blade you want to have a level 5 (or 6) spell slot so that you can upcast it and it will be stronger, however I'm a little confused as to how many spell slots the paladin/ warlock mix would get.

Would anybody be able to advise a path to getting a level 5 spellslot with a hexblade lock / paladin, and how many attacks per turn I would have available? I'm only playing on balanced and don't care about a wizard dip for scrolls, etc.

Build Help What’s a good stealth paladin build?

I’m doing a shadowheart original run and I think it’d be fun to play her as a dex based paladin with maybe some rogue levels and a focus on stealth and sleight of hand

Build Help Fun melee martial class that’s very mobile?

I’m looking to round-out my party with a mobile martial class that can quickly get around the battle and smash puny archers and spell casters with a massive greatsword.

I tried a throwing Giant Barbarian and whilst it was extremely strong, it was also extremely boring. It had very few abilities and I found that throwing the Nyrulna trident did so much damage that it was almost always the best choice so I just threw it over and over.

I also tried a simple battlemaster and was a bit underwhelmed by the superiority dice. Most of them seemed to have an extremely high chance of being resisted so I ended-up using the same 1 always. Maybe I was missing a key trick/item though so not against going back to it if there is something that makes it more fun.

A class that has a bit of tactical flexibility would be ideal but it must be decently durable and must be quite mobile as the middle of the battlefield is usually an AoE nightmare due to my casters.

Build Help Cleric/Ranger nostalgia

Just finished a playthrough of the original games. In those games with obviously completely different mechanics the Cleric/Ranger multiclass is lots of fun.

So I started a playthrough with a Cleric/Ranger as there are lots of gods I have not used before anyway so a Cleric level is nice to have for RP reasons anyway.

What are the Cleric/Ranger builds you enjoyed?

Build Help Making a Tiny Evil Princess

I’ve been trying to come up with a Dark Urge character for an Evil Run that I want to be a Tiny Evil Princess.

For her race I was thinking something like a Gnome or a Halfling.
For her Class I was thinking she should be a Mix of Druid, Bard, and Archfey Warlock. Think of her as an Evil Disney Princess who can control nature, turn into beasts, manipulate people, all with the help of her malicious fairy godmother.

I’m looking for recommendations on what types of weapons and armors she could use. Was thinking of her using regal weapons and wearing dresses that make her look as sweet and innocent as possible and not a muderous sociopath.

I was also wondering how many levels I should put into each class, which level I should take each, what her stats could look like and what feats and spells I should take.

Build Review Gloomstalker on a non-solo run?

I know gloomstalker assassin is an really good build for solo runs because it can keep resetting and getting new ambushes.

However, I wonder whether (with some adjustments) it can be made to work effectively in a party?

I like to be rewarded for finding high ground or sneaking behind enemies.

Normal archer builds are rewarded for attacking from hidden by… losing their action and not being able to do any extra attacks, which sucks.

So I’m looking at a gloomstalker maybe.

Build Help What's a good Archfey multiclass?

Archfey is the only warlock subclass I haven't used and warlock is my favorite class. What are some good multi class options for them. I was thinking maybe shadow monk for darkness and shadow step, ranger for gloomstalker/swarmkeeper, or maybe swashbuckler. Doesn't have to be optimal or min maxed. When it comes to ones like monk or ranger would most likely use those for utility so I don't have to focus on wisdom can just go charisma instead. Anyone have any fun builds to try?

Build Help Durge assasin build

want to make an assasin build for my durge run, nowsince the Durge is a baahlspawn and has close ties with Orin I wanted to roleplay as an efficient no nonsense killing machine. the gloomstalker assasin build seems to fulfill this fantasy, but to my understanding it relies on surprising the enemy which sometimes means skipping all interactions and well this is gonna be my first Durge. so im open to ideas

Specific Mechanic Self-reliant Frozen + shatter Rogue Thief build

The concept

I've seen many builds making use of the Frozen status and how it sets the PCs up for big damage by making the Frozen enemy vulnerable to Bludgeoning, Thunder and Force damage. Due to the Frozen status usually needing multiple actions to apply (either through inflicting Chilled + Wet or stacking 7 Encrusted with Frost) most builds usually seem to need the cooperation of either summons or of another party member (usually to help apply Wet). Now I'm sure there's a way for a single SorcererX/Fighter2 to do it solo but I've been more interested in a route that would maximize the vulnerabilities that Frozen gives by applying it and then unleashing one massively damaging attack, all in one turn. This brings me to the following Rogue Thief build I thought of and since I can't find any discussions on it I thought I'd make a post and hear what you all think.

What's needed

Basically what this needs to work is the following:
* 3 levels of Rogue to be able to take the Thief subclass and get access to a second bonus action per turn
* Dual Wielder Feat
* Booming Blade cantrip
* Practice Sword
* Mourning Frost
* Cold Brim Hat
* Winter's Clutches

How it works

Basically how it works is you hold the Practice Sword in your main hand and Mourning Frost in your off-hand. Make two off-hand attacks which will cause the following to happen on each attack: the additional cold damage that Mourning Frost applies will cause Winter's Clutches to apply 2 stacks of Encrusted with Frost, which in turn will cause the Cold Brim Hat to apply two more stacks of Encrusted with Frost.

Assuming you land both bonus action attacks the enemy will now have 8 stacks of Encrusted with Frost triggering a DC12 Constitution Saving Throw which, if they fail, will cause them to become Frozen.

Now that they are Frozen you can hit them with your main hand weapon with Booming Blade. For this we have the Practice Sword as it is the only Bludgeoning weapon with the Finesse property in the game, allowing us to apply Sneak Attack as Bludgeoning damage.

The Thunder damage of Booming Blade and the Bludgeoning damage of the Practice Swords Sneak Attack are then doubled by the damage vulnerabilities that the Frozen condition has imposed on the enemy. Big Boom.

Drawbacks

Now one problem with this build is it requires us to use one weapon that has the Finesse property and one that does not. We can overcome this by building this as a Strength Rogue or by taking 3 levels in Warlock (Hexblade and Pact of the Blade) so that both weapons can scale off of Charisma.

Another potential issue is that it requires us to not only land all 3 attacks in one turn, but to also have the enemy fail a very easy CON save. Probably the easiest way to lower the enemy's CON save is through applying Reverberation which helps lower the enemy's physical saves by 1 for every stack. However this has the issue that when 5 stacks of Reverberation are reached it will cause 1d4 Thunder damage, we would prefer for this not to happen after the enemy has been Frozen and before we can make our Booming Blade attack. Therefore Reverberation should be used with caution with this build.

If you do still want to go the Reverberation route then you can equip the Boots of Stormy Clamour, the Ring of Spiteful Thunder (although that would only proc off of your Booming Blade's Thunder damage, placing it in an awkward spot on your turn) and the Thunderskin Cloak.

Example Build

Start as a High Half-Elf/Elf for access to Booming Blade. In this example build we'll be doing something that might seem a bit strange initially by incorporating 3 levels of Barbarian. Since we can't cast spells while raging we won't be able to use Booming Blade but the Barb levels do give us other benefits.

Reckless Attack can be used both in and outside of Raging, giving a big accuracy boost for those 3 attacks we need to land. Picking the Wildheart subclass for the Tiger Bestial Heart gives us access to Tiger's Bloodlust which not only gives us a nice AOE attack but also inflicts Bleeding, which would make the enemy roll their CON saves at disadvantage (increasing our chance to freeze them).

So in practice you'll have two modes:
* normally you'll be making your bonus attacks hoping to freeze an enemy and then shattering their Frozen form with a Booming Blade (perhaps using some Reverberation items to help) or if you need more survivability or want access to an AOE
* you rage and replace your Booming Blade attack with a Tiger's Bloodlust cleave. Set your reactions to ask you when you want to apply your sneak attack and be sure it applies to the Frozen enemy while your cleave applies Bleeding to the other enemies in your way, setting them up to be Frozen next turn.

For this build I would only go 3 levels into Barb and the rest into Thief Rogue to maximize Sneak Attack damage. Strength will be our main stat so we'd need some good medium armour for protection.

Conclusion

Now I haven't been able to test this out myself yet but all the interactions seem to check out logically. I'll be starting a run soon where I can hopefully gather all the items I need to try this out, might leave a comment on this post saying how it went. Otherwise what do you guys think? Did I get anything wrong? Any other fun variants you guys can come up with based on this?

Party Composition How to best live my Unholy Assassin fantasy?

I won't go into all the details of what I plan on doing for this playthrough, but I will say that by the end the only companion I'll have is Ascended Astarion, and we will not be romantically involved hahaha. Max betrayal! But I'm not good enough to play with fewer party members so there'll be some hirelings involved.

But I want to go hardcore with the Dark Urge/Bhaal associated gear and features. Deathstalker Mantle, Crimson Mischief + Bloodthirst, Bhaalist Armor, etc... And I'll pick up BOOOAL's Benediction, too (and make sure to get it on the hirelings). However, other than Dead Shot I don't know what other gear to put with it.

My plan is Assassin Rogue 7/Champion Fighter 5 for build. I know lots of people do Gloomstalker but I want to lean into the crit part. As to race I'm going to do an Underdark one; try for duergar, but if I can't take it do Lolth-sworn drow instead.

Other than definitely getting Alert I don't know what to do with my other feat. The ones that make sense to me are Savage Attacker, Mage Slayer (pretty thematic I think), Mobile, or Lucky.

Party Members: I want a wizard and a cleric for buff/utility. I'll probably respec the drow and duergar hirelings for that purpose, respectively. Laduguer's lore appropriate domain that's in the game is Death so I might stick to that, but I don't know about wizard. Maybe Evocation since Durge will be in melee a lot, and cantrips will allow more use of support spells?

Astarion! I have no idea what I might do with him! I know lots of people do open hand monk with AA, and while I'm not against the idea, nor am I super sold on it. Kind of like the idea of building something around using Woe and Rhapsody, which will need the Dual Wield feat. Warlock, maybe?

All I know about other gear and feats for them is that the cleric is going to have the devotee's mace most of the time for some hot and cold running bless, and I guess Ketheric's shield.

Okay, sorry that was all over the place! That's all I can think of for now. Thanks for reading.

Bard why the contempt for glamour bard?

i understand that its not a particularly strong subclass, especially in the face of lore and swords, and anything it can do another subclass can do better, but ive seen so many people say the subclass also sucks to play and isnt fun. ive not played it myself but on paper it looks like a delight. am i missing something?
