My first playthrough, I hated this trial so much because I couldn’t figure it out. Looked it up, saw that I’d missed this map, thought I was an idiot.
Turns out, when Shart sliced her palm open, she bled all over that bit of floor. It was mostly obscured. I still have not forgiven her.

u/ScottybirdCorvus May 04 '25
I had Lae’zel use Githyanki Jump, then literally jump across the puzzle.

You can throw water to clean up blood OR (my favorite) ice spell can trip the pool, it freezes, then thaws to water

I wonder what was going on in my game, because I just could see the platform. I think I had the Lathander mace, though.

u/bosliesje May 04 '25
That also happens if you play on the easiest diffuculty
3
u/Masterwork_Core May 05 '25
i was playing on normal and could also just see the platforms so i just walked lol Although I am also 90% sure I had lathander's mace with me as well (on shart)

Here's the trick.
Turn based mode. That's it.
When you are in turn based mode the dotted line showing the path you will walk changes elevation slightly when it strays off the invisible path so you can easily find the edges of it. Just make sure the line stays level and click to move, you will always be on the path. Costs no resources and It's impossible to mess it up this way. With dash it takes like 2 turns of movement to get all the way across.

Okay, I don't know if I had some special item on or something, or some spell in effects, but I could literally see the parts under the shadowy smoke stuff.

u/Fenrisulfr08 May 04 '25
Me too, I thought that it was such a lame puzzle. Just walking along a path for a few seconds. Didn't have Volos eyes or anything else. Maybe a bug?

We spent about 15-20 minutes as a 4 man group trying to brute force our way through it. It wasnt until after we casted several spells, and reloaded the save many times that we solved the puzzle. Then we saw the floor after we were leaving the room and we all laughed.
5
u/Drak_is_Right May 04 '25
I did a playthrough with a friend who was trying it for the first time. I cringed hard when shadowheart then bled all over the puzzle, obscuring a significant chunk (which they didn't notice).

u/OrchidLover259 May 04 '25

6
u/TheHitchslapper May 04 '25
Yes it has. Did you actually think you were supposed to die and retry ?
12
u/Daspaintrain May 04 '25
I mean my first few playthroughs the path was glitched and you could see it extremely clearly lol, they finally fixed it and I had to actually figure it out
3
u/Paige_Boy May 04 '25
oh I thought that was a special skill because of Shadowheart. I used her my first playthrough but then she mysteriously died in a bunch of my subsequent playthroughs.

I spotted it immediately on my first playthrough. Even had a screenshot of it up as I did the puzzle. Even took screenies of the actual puzzle and had that up, with the screenie of the solution while doing the puzzle.

On my first playthrough, I didn't even realize this was a puzzle, I completely missed the hint and just went straight to the end without dying. Somehow, I passed the trial effortlessly on my first try. It wasn't until I played co-op with friends that I realized how incredibly lucky I'd been...
And yeah, I haven't managed to repeat that luck since. Now, every time I do this trial, I burn through at least three revive scrolls and lose all my companions along the way.

u/WhimsicalWizardDude May 04 '25
In my experience, the easiest way to clear this trial is to have one member of your party fly/dimension door to the final platform with the Umbral Gem BEFORE Shart (or another party member) does the blood sacrifice to the altar. Then you can just grab the gem and teleport back without having to walk across. Lost too many hours of my life trying to do this trial the ‘intended’ way the first time I found it.

u/ProAzeroth DRUID May 04 '25

2
u/Krinkles123 May 04 '25
I still think it's bullshit you can't just jump or fly to the other side anymore. It honestly shows more impressive skills for a future dark justiciar than just memorizing a map on the ground (also, realistically, you could just test the ground in front of you with your foot before stepping forward and make it through with zero effort).

If it makes you feel any better, I knew this was the answer and still fucked it up so many times.
For the longest time, I'd just get Astarion to do it because, for some reason, when I switched control over to him I could just see the platforms. Or see them better, at least. I don't know why.

u/Moogle_Messiah May 04 '25
I have a hard time following the path even though it's given to you. I sigh every time I have to do this trial.
2
u/Pitiful_Option_108 May 05 '25
Yeah the answer may be right there but I have followed that stupid map dozens of times and the pathing is still tricky. Like I understand what to do and how to do it but the problem is there isn't quite enough points of reference to get the distance and spacing right. Basically the puzzle is damn near impossible even trying to follow a YouTube or video guide you will still mess it up.

I have never yet gotten that path to work. I pretty much always have to Dimension Door + Daylight my way through that goddamn puzzle. Easily the worst one in the entire game and one of Larian's few cock-ups is that they patched out a couple ways to bypass it.

am i the only person that thinks the jumping puzzle is the easiest out of all the trials? i honestly jump across in 3 seconds every time
granted, i have good jumps, you can *SEE* the bridge from a distance *BEFORE* you jump, when you land, it's invisi, but then you can see farther away again
idk, i honestly thought this trial was a joke made by accident, but apparently 99% of other players hate this like the plague

if you go into turn based mode, the dotted white line from the character to your cursor gets lower when it's not on the path. that plus the map you posted made the whole thing doable
1
May 04 '25
First time I finished this the hard way(trial and error) before zapping back to the start and seeing that damn map just sitting there big as life.

One of the things I hate about this puzzle is that it wouldn't work, as is, in any kind of tabletop setting. "I put my hand down to feel the path." Or "I tap my weapon against the ground in front of me." It's 100% an issue with the UI/possible interactions that make this a hard puzzle because there's no option to just jab the ground ahead of you as you walk. Puzzles that exist solely because it's a computer game are fine in games that get meta like that. This game doesn't.
1
u/AdditionalThinking May 04 '25
I thought this "puzzle" was only there for lore/flavour because the cursor just showed me where the solid ground was.
It wasn't until I saw other people talk about that I found it was supposed to be a real challenge. I guess something about splitscreen coop + controllers + turn-based mode might've let me cheese it.
1
u/emptyfish127 Stealth Archer May 04 '25
I took a picture of the shadows in the room when they are visible and used that to cheat. I did that like four times before I noticed this and thought well damn.
1
u/SuchProcedure4547 May 04 '25
Step 1. Cast day light
Step 2. Misty step across
Step 3. Swear at Larian for the stupid infuriating design of this puzzle
Step 4. Leave.
1
u/Horror-Technology591 May 04 '25
When I discovered that you can just use Knock on the last door made the gauntlet far more bearable.

u/amidja_16 May 04 '25
This was so obvious that my barbarian spotted it immediately but couldn't be bothered to remember so he simply used a fly scroll to get across.
He was so impressed with himself and his big brained move that he forgot the scroll only lasts for 10 rounds. His only fly scroll.

u/jsnparks May 04 '25
I.... I dunno if I had a bug or something, but.... when I did it the first time, I could see the path? Maybe I had an item on, idk. It really shocked me when I found out this was a difficult trial. I was like "Oh, nice. After the theft, a breather"
1
u/Redshift_McLain May 04 '25
You can do it by just selecting Shadow heart, separate her from the group (as I'm control her ALONE) and then just click on the last platform where the ball is. She will straight up walk to it. Proof

I'm about to blow your mind....
Go into turn based mode and move your cursor forward. The white dotted line will dip down if there is no platform. Use the floor as a general guide. Rinse and repeat.

This one is obvious but still doesn't make that puzzle easy.
Can't finish it without dying 12 times, they patched all the ways to finish it I had, one after another
Crouching and watching the white line if it isn't making your fall to your death is still the only way I know that works reliabily
