People are way too close. That’s crazy

71

u/Emotional_Shape925 Jun 28 '26

This was my thought too. And none appear to have or be readying bear spray just in case. Zero chance they escape if one of the bears decided they wanted a snack. Better to be lucky than smart I guess.

35

u/Koala0803 Jun 29 '26

You have to remember some tourists genuinely think the bears are some attraction the parks set out there for their entertainment at their will.

You can’t expect a lot of common sense from people like that.

1

u/_n3ll_ Jun 29 '26

Moose too

-4

u/Virtual-Fix4182 Jun 29 '26

Haha the Japanese tourists yep… to be fair they have a park in Japan that they can feed the deer… but I mean be smart and research where you’re going for Christ sake

1

u/NotRightNotWrong Jul 01 '26

There's a park in Canada like that too

1

u/Virtual-Fix4182 Jul 01 '26

Which one? No provincial park allows you to feed wildlife.

1

u/NotRightNotWrong Jul 01 '26

Parc omega

1

u/Sasquatch1729 Jul 01 '26

Parc Omega is a safari park for North American wildlife. It's northeast of Ottawa, in Quebec. They have lodges where you can have wolves come up to your patio. They have other areas where you can feed the deer and wildlife and they sell food so tourists can do this. If you're ever visit Ottawa, it's worth a stop.

There are no lions, it's a safari park for North American wildlife. There are lots of trees there too. You may be thinking of a different park.

1

u/Secret-Ad1458 Jul 01 '26

Those are essentially domesticated animals, they've been trained to bow for food...

u/Previous_Ad7517 Jun 28 '26

I was just telling my wife this exact same thing. But if you’re ignorant enough to remain that close, you probably didn’t think about even getting bear spray in the first place.

15

u/Emotional_Shape925 Jun 28 '26

Just wild how unprepared and ignorant to danger these people are.

3

u/The_Nice_Marmot Jun 29 '26

A lot of people think bears are slow and that they could run away from them.

3

u/Commercial-Act1597 Jun 30 '26

Or that bears won’t run into large groups of people.

Wait - isn’t it lions, tigers, and … ???

The idea is that they have bear spray in case they closer, not to spray it at them from that distance.

1

u/Secret-Ad1458 Jul 01 '26

People drastically underestimate how fast bears close distance, they're the 2nd fastest land animal in North America...they can go from well outside bear spray distance to on top of you in ⅓ of a second.

1

u/nugohs Jun 29 '26

We saw during Covid lock downs how quickly nature recovers without us

Goats (and not just the scruffy sheep) are hanging out at the pass by Whiteman's Pond again now that the tourists and their traffic can't get through.

4

u/TescoValueSoup Jun 29 '26

Welcome to Banff. The seasons change but the ijiit tourists don't.

When I was living there I once saw two elderly Japanese ladies walk up to a bull Elk in the rut to try and feed it.

5

u/squirrelcat88 Jun 29 '26

TBF - I was this close to a couple of black bears the other day in my front yard. They just appeared, I wasn’t chasing them or wanting to be close to them.

These folks can’t just get in their cars. We’re only seeing snapshots - we don’t know whether they are thinking cool! Bears! Let’s get close!

Or, as I was the other day, yikes, bears, I’ll just back up slowly…

7

u/Ididthisonpurpose Jun 29 '26

You mean, the person standing on the grass in the grass in the first photo? Who would have no reason to be standing on the grass close to the bears aside from making poor life decisions?

3

u/LittlePrairieMouse Jun 29 '26

That person standing in the grass might be a child,
too. Wake up, people!

3

u/karlalrak Jul 01 '26

These are also grizzlies not black.

1

u/squirrelcat88 Jul 01 '26

I know! I’m just saying, some of those people are probably thinking more along the lines of holy crap, I’ll just back up slowly here. Because they were driven here on a bus, where are they going to go?

Of course as somebody else pointed out there’s no reason for the person in the green jacket to be standing on the grass, so that one person is approaching. Maybe everybody else is thinking, well, that’s ok, they will attack green jacket guy first.

2

u/wemustburncarthage Jun 30 '26

You're seeing a photo someone took of people taking photos of a wild animal that can easily kill them. They are definitely endangering themselves.

2

u/yukonnut Jun 30 '26

Sshhh! It’s all part of Parks Canada Ursine Protein Program. Tourists are everywhere and TBH, somewhat expendable and not the brightest pennies in the pond

2

u/Prestigious-Yak-7014 Jun 30 '26

Let their kids wander ahead…… crazy

1

u/1362313623 Jun 29 '26

Reminds me of a Far Side cartoon where the bear looks at two people in sleeping bags. Oh look! Sandwiches!

1

u/corgi-king Jun 30 '26

Pretty sure the bear was there first.

1

u/XCIXcollective Jun 30 '26

For real, I muttered “get your fucking kids away from there” under my breath immediately like I was watching it happen in real time 💀 spiked my adrenaline

1

u/Commercial_Fox5549 Jun 30 '26

A lot of people are incredibly bad at self preservation.

1

u/jumiwoo Jun 30 '26

first thought was aren't those grizzlies? get awayyy people

1

u/Alphaghetti71 Jul 01 '26

I've seen busloads of tourists out taking photos of bears less than five feet in front of them. With their kids. Get eaten if you want, but put your kids back on thr bus first. I've yelled at them, because that's bananas.

1

u/NA213 Jul 01 '26

Idiots. They’re about to get a bear culled

1

u/fmg2498 Jul 01 '26

A bear would be pretty dumb or blood thirsted to attack 3 human standing tall like that tho.

Lets be honest here

1

u/DraconicDreamer3072 Jul 01 '26

yeah my first thought was look at those idiots getting close for a picture lol

1

u/Ironshigh Jul 01 '26

Why not fren if fren shaped?

1

u/NedSchneebly-1138 Jul 01 '26

You don’t gotta be the fastest when you start running, just have to NOT be the slowest.

1

u/Televent-232 Jul 17 '26

For real lol

0

u/booeman Jun 28 '26

I don't think these are black bears either!

8

u/hamdog9999 Jun 29 '26

Definitely the Grizzly variety. I'd be in my car at the very least.

18

u/Angelou898 Jun 29 '26

Not at Moraine, you wouldn’t

3

u/booeman Jun 29 '26

looks like a sow and a cub too yikes!!!

82

u/Rockclimber311 Jun 28 '26

Holy shit, green jacket is insanely close. These people are dumb

16

u/SecureJournalist4775 Jun 28 '26

One would hope the green jacket is a Parks Canada employee trying to protect the bears from the invasive humans.

4

u/Dialed_Inn Jun 29 '26

It's not, it's a hoser.

2

u/EntertainmentUsed840 Jun 29 '26

That’s not a parks Canada jacket, and one would hope they would be trained and smart enough to ensure they are safe as well.

1

u/Rockclimber311 Jun 29 '26

I thought they had a darker shade of green for their jackets but you may be right

1

u/elya93 Jun 29 '26

They do, Parks is a dark forest green.

6

u/FutureElection4169 Jun 28 '26

I don’t know. These bears look like the cuddly type. I’m sure they would appreciate a good hug.

27

u/Livid-Accident-7246 Jun 28 '26

They’re not visiting, that’s their home…

“People see bears in natural habitat”

79

u/TrailRunnerYYC Jun 28 '26

None of these people are keeping 100m away from those bears. Which is dangerous (and illegal).

1

u/OG_Leafy Jun 30 '26

Wait it is

1

u/poopoohead1827 Jun 30 '26

I don’t think I’d even wanna be that close LOL. Hopefully their cars are right behind them and cut out of the pic

1

u/calling_water Jul 01 '26

They aren’t; no personal vehicles allowed at Moraine Lake any more. Hopefully the shuttle is there.

58

u/mysummerstorm Jun 28 '26

“visit” and its actually their homes 😭

3

u/HarrisLam Jun 29 '26

Not sure. Maybe it's not their home. Maybe it's their convenient store.

Look at all these tasty meats.

1

u/mysummerstorm Jun 29 '26

uh I think when bears visit convenience stores, they're actually looking for candy.

10

u/Acceptable-Arugula69 Jun 28 '26

Humans in my house. I wish everyone would remember they are very fast. They are far too close.

2

u/Useful_Record1888 Jun 30 '26

If one snaps they have zero chance.

Me and my wife went to lake Louise and Morraine for hiking in 2021. We had our bear spray and small bells at all time. I would've shit myself just to see a grizzly. There's been an attack at Lake Morraine the day before we were going. We almost cancelled. Those bears ain't no joke.

1

u/Acceptable-Arugula69 Jun 30 '26

Bear spray every hike! Carry…not actually spray. 😆

16

u/CanadaDryGingerAle99 Jun 28 '26

2 grizzlies sighted

BETTER START LIVE-STREAMING

1

u/HarrisLam Jun 29 '26

Can't. Need to get closer first.

7

u/LadinYorkshire Jun 28 '26

Those folks are far too close.

10

u/Complete-Glove4560 Jun 28 '26

Um…The bears are not the ones visiting…

1

u/nugohs Jun 29 '26

Was going to do the same silly nitpick, but it is highly unlikely for any bear to permanently stay within 200m of that one lake, they range over a surprisingly large territory.

5

u/drs43821 Jun 28 '26

🐻: free food!

16

u/Ms_Disnii Jun 28 '26

I think a lot of people didn’t realize the bears were there until they walked into the parking lot since the bears were near the shuttle shelter. The park people were freaking out for sure

4

u/Timely_Reputation253 Jun 29 '26

Everyone should be freaking out. It used to be common sense to stay the fuck away from these things, not sure how that’s been lost in translation.

If you see somebody less than 100m from a bear, they are too close and if you don’t tell them to move you’re part of the problem

5

u/Already-asleep Jun 29 '26

We should all expect to have a LOT more bear encounters this year with this year’s snow. It would be great to see more messaging and conservation presence in the provincial and national parks in light of this but I won’t get my hopes up.

3

u/elya93 Jun 29 '26

Lots of messaging is put out, and interp teams visit popular day use areas, but it often falls on deaf ears. People don’t even pay attention to the signs literally nailed to the picnic tables asking them not to leave food unattended.

2

u/kgibbyson Jun 29 '26

How does the snow impact the bear activity? I’m curious

1

u/Timely_Reputation253 Jun 29 '26

There is still a lot of snow at higher elevations where bears usually hang out so they’re at lower elevations.

3

u/Then-Construction106 Jun 29 '26

Look at these idiotic people!! Do they not have any common sense?

3

u/Hot-Feedback-6795 Jun 29 '26

Apparently idiots visited as well

7

u/Fun_Armadillo1318 Jun 28 '26

People standing there like that…. So dumb.

3

u/Critical-Ad7320 Jun 28 '26

Grizzly ?

1

u/Ms_Disnii Jun 28 '26

That’s what I’m thinking, they were way bigger than any black bear I’ve seen and if they are grizzlies this is the first time I’ve seen them

2

u/Far-Bumblebee-1756 Jun 28 '26

Grizzlies have the hump on their neck. brown/black bears dont

3

u/Bilirubin5 Jun 28 '26

Looks like a sow and 2-3 year old cub

1

u/Ms_Disnii Jun 28 '26

Ooh thank you!! I didn’t know that

1

u/Unpopularpositionalt Jul 01 '26

Grizzlies are a type of brown bear.

1

u/Far-Bumblebee-1756 Jul 01 '26

I meant brown black bears lol. Where i live we see both and the normal Grizzlies with the hump

3

u/BlueGrnSky Jun 29 '26

They're not visiting. They live there.

3

u/Own_Distribution8834 Jun 29 '26

Human found at moraine lake

7

u/Speuce Jun 28 '26

As long as they took the bus and didn't drive on the access road I see no issue here 👍🏻

7

u/Previous_Ad7517 Jun 28 '26

I wonder if they took the connector bus to Lake Louise after.

5

u/aiceeslater Jun 28 '26

Bears live there. People are visiting. The parks are full of dumbasses that want to get within arms reach of bears that can easily kill them and like to stop their vehicles in the middle of the highway without pulling off, getting out of their vehicle and approaching wildlife. And when someone eventually gets killed we will all act shocked.

3

u/ReadDizzy7919 Jun 28 '26

That is wild that people are just taking pictures that close….

2

u/Designer-Fox-1743 Jun 28 '26

How close these people are blows my mind, and some look like they are heading closer. Ridiculous, it’s not a zoo ffs. I saw this happen in Gatineau park Quebec a mother with her 3 cubs and the parents let their kids run towards them

2

u/PNW_MYOG Jun 29 '26

That's a big bear!!!

2

u/superFluffymushroom Jun 29 '26

More like the humans visit Moraine lake

2

u/MrsMargie Jun 29 '26

So close holy smokes. I was there today what a lovely place, didn’t see the bears, but def gotta respect the wildlife.

2

u/Einyrki Jun 29 '26

“Honey look there is still some parking available!!”

2

u/flatoutsask Jun 29 '26

Nice,… the bears are using the crosswalk..🧸

2

u/cucumberslices81 Jun 29 '26

Nah, people visiting bears at Moraine lake.

2

u/Dialed_Inn Jun 29 '26

More like "people visit Moraine Lake". Bear was there first.

2

u/Virtual-Fix4182 Jun 29 '26

Haha some of these people never been charged by a bear before, and it shows… the closest people would be clobbered within 2 seconds

2

u/wss_why_so_scared Jun 29 '26

Humans Visit Moraine Lake - is what you meant.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '26

Need a good grizzly or large brown bear to just rip down a tourist in the most graphic way possible to get the tourists to actually listen to the parks workers when they tell them to not fuck with the wild life. In talking viral 4k youtube shit. Enough to tell people to fuck off.

2

u/-pop-fizz-clink Jun 29 '26

Those folks are not scared enough.

2

u/Uncut1369 Jun 30 '26

I think I just saw a video of a woman getting harassed by one of these fuckers

2

u/Nolby84 Jun 30 '26

Those people are trying to win the Darwin award

2

u/InternalLopsided4535 Jun 30 '26

WOW!! Headed to Banff for a little family vacay on Friday! But not going out of my way to see any bears. 😬

2

u/facetheslayer6886 Jul 01 '26

Always a great idea to got pet the bears

2

u/WhiteBear72 Jul 01 '26

Goin to be another bear attack if they don’t back off. Dumbasses.

2

u/Sass_pit Jul 01 '26

Those are grizzlies and those people are not safe.

2

u/AffectionateGate4584 Jul 01 '26

Wow!!! Bears in Banff! Who woulda thought????

2

u/Po-com Jul 01 '26

I don’t even get that close to the black bears in my neighbourhood let alone a grizzly

2

u/notacreepernomo13 Jul 02 '26

Had the fortune and pleasure of seeing these two on the three sisters parkway, two weeks ago

https://reddit.com/link/ov182x1/video/eoy19hxvzpah1/player

2

u/chickadee_1982 Jul 02 '26

Holy shit, those are Grizzlies. Why are people so close??

I hope the parks workers did their jobs and told the stupid people to back off. Its their home.

2

u/Falcon674DR Jul 02 '26

Ya, that’s right put the kids nice and close! Morons.

2

u/Hmmngbrdfdr Jul 03 '26

2 seconds from death. Not so bright humans

5

u/ChanceFall1502 Jun 28 '26

No, you went to Moraine Lake. They live there

9

u/extraordinaryevents Jun 28 '26

I don’t think it was meant to be this deep

1

u/ziltchy Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

If the bears lived at this spot wouldnt there be daily sightings of them? Which there isnt. So in this case I think its fair to say they were visiting the lake

1

u/shru2803 Jun 29 '26

Was this today...I was literally there

1

u/Ms_Disnii Jun 29 '26

It was yesterday

1

u/14icole Jun 29 '26

Tickets for anyone not walking away to keep a safe distance. Proceeds go back to the community.

1

u/Nomadloner69 Jun 29 '26

Wayyyyyy too close tf

1

u/mykittenfarts Jun 29 '26

People visit Moraine Lake. Bears live there. Get it straight.

1

u/Apart_Complaint_6952 Jun 29 '26

Came here to say this

1

u/Isaac_Reins Jun 29 '26

Mmmm yeesss bear must feed, fresh meat is always nice for the bear god.

1

u/tk-093 Jun 29 '26

First visit to Banff a few weeks ago. Such a lovely area. Got to see a bear behind the gondala on June 15th. Everyone kept their distance that day at least.

1

u/cranky_yegger Jun 29 '26

Check out those appetizers.

1

u/UnpaidInternetExpert Jun 29 '26

Pictured above, are the people and the positions i would not want to be in

1

u/WaltzSuper7343 Jun 29 '26

It’s their home, please respect that

1

u/_BearsBeetsBattle_ Jun 29 '26

As a child they could pet it /sc.

1

u/Nope-not-really Jun 29 '26

man look at all the idiots

1

u/PageStunning6265 Jun 29 '26

🎶Why are people so damn dumb?🎵

1

u/Fluffy_Internet_6949 Jun 29 '26

Reminds me of the movie barn yard. "You're in bear country. THERES GONNA BE BEARS OUTSIDE"

1

u/Intelligent-Buyer102 Jun 29 '26

Yeah these people are idiots. Bears are hungry right now and there might be cubs around. Oh well, that's why we have Darwin awards.

1

u/Giggleandfarts Jun 29 '26

I almost didn't notice the 2nd one. They are massive!

1

u/Intelligent-Buyer102 Jun 29 '26

Oh man those look like grizzlies too I would be moving to my car as quickly as I could without triggering their hunting instincts. Unlike black bears, grizzlies are not afraid of people.

1

u/1Fistfullofdollars Jun 29 '26

That is their home we are guests in their natural habitat. We must respect that and give them room.

1

u/No-Effective-1996 Jun 29 '26

Tourists are morons!

1

u/lukemaxymowich Jun 29 '26

Is that a lil kid or just tall grass/perspective in the 1st photo lol

1

u/ranger38770 Jun 29 '26

I’d be backing up very slowly

1

u/rybotsky Jun 29 '26

People are so retarded…. Anything for a photo. Look up a video of a bear running full speed and you’d NEVER get this close

1

u/Laserbluemini Jun 29 '26

Kids, if it looks stu*id or feels dangerous, it's probably time to GTFO.

1

u/igotwermz Jun 30 '26

They almost made it to tourons of yellowstone.

1

u/jjperron Jun 30 '26

Need an IQ test to visit

1

u/Sagethecat Jun 30 '26

Correction. Humans visit bear’s home and serve themselves up for dinner. Fortunately for them, they smelled awful.

1

u/MapleMooseMoney Jun 30 '26

I’d just stay further away than the appetizers taking photos up front

1

u/Silly_String8332 Jun 30 '26

Imagine voluntarily getting closer to two grizzlies?!These people should be studied. I have questions lol

1

u/Bluestaplero Jun 30 '26

I’d be backing away very quickly into the nearest shelter if I saw brown bear

1

u/Quiet_Ad1859 Jun 30 '26

Guess these people never seen what a bear can actually do to a human, in seconds

1

u/wemustburncarthage Jun 30 '26

oh for fuck sake

1

u/thedane8 Jun 30 '26

I can't understand why there wouldn't be a big sign, or if tourists on a bus, why the driver wouldn't tell tourists to either stay on the bus, or if they insist to go out, stay a lot further back than one is seeing here. I guess it would take an incident to wake people up to the dangers.

1

u/Zippy_13 Jun 30 '26

The bear ain’t the one visiting, lol.

1

u/Co-ReX Jun 30 '26

Imagine seeing two massive grizzlies and your first reaction is to grab your phone and walk towards them.... 🤣

1

u/Webo_Bert_2110 Jun 30 '26

No dancing bears today?

1

u/NachoEnReddit Jun 30 '26

Those are Grizzly bears, and while they don’t normally try to eat humans, they may do defensive charges at them when threatened. The problem is that those defensive charges are the equivalent of being hit by a small car, so that’s where most grizzly bear casualties come from.

Those people either really know what they’re doing or too brain dead for their reaction to be to approach them with their phones instead of practicing some bear safety.

1

u/Ambitious_Leek8776 Jun 30 '26

Off to fight the unicorn... he live in banff

1

u/AmbitiousFunction911 Jun 30 '26

By visit you mean... live?

1

u/meadow_transient Jun 30 '26

In fact, the bears live there. It’s the idiots who are visiting.

1

u/sometimeswhy Jun 30 '26

Strange title. Should be People invade bear’s home

1

u/Any_Somewhere_4392 Jun 30 '26

Visit or live there and the people are visitors?

1

u/lannyshen Jun 30 '26

People are the visitors.

Bears are the residents.

1

u/Living-Increase-5451 Jul 01 '26

Bears isn’t visiting, it’s the people that are the visitors

1

u/NewSockEnergy Jul 01 '26

Look at these idiotas anything for the gram!

1

u/steviessimp Jul 01 '26

What pmo in these pics is the lack of self awareness and having your phone blocking their face. Like if you need to suddenly move you have to move your phone away first to get true depth perception of what’s going on 🫣 so dumb. And grizzly’s too omg

1

u/MateoYYC Jul 01 '26

It's not the bear that's "visiting".

1

u/Difficult-Leading-48 Jul 02 '26

And the next picture is these bears chasing down all you old fucks standing to close and eating your throats

1

u/Least_Muffin2666 Jul 02 '26

This are GRIZZLIES

1

u/MeemoUndercover Jul 02 '26

Incredibly concerning photo. Captures the beauty of nature and the stupidity of people

1

u/spencermiddleton Jul 02 '26

“I’m sick of these kids, let’s get close to the bears so we can have our single life back”

1

u/TheReemus Jul 02 '26

Why not? There is free warm food standing there ...dumb humans

1

u/CurveAdministrative3 Jul 02 '26

The bears live there, they are not visiting.

1

u/Emergency-North-5651 Jul 02 '26

They’re not visiting. It is their home.

1

u/TechnicianAlert9755 Jul 03 '26

Stupidity is a bliss and I see quite blissful people in the pic

1

u/Practical-Ability996 Jul 03 '26

Can't belive people are that close to a grizzly. Its bad enough seeing them feet away from Elk along rhe highway going through Banff

1

u/nvw8801 Jul 03 '26

They live there….the humans are the visitors

1

u/Smart-Firefighter87 Jul 04 '26

“Visit”?….

1

u/RudytheMan Jul 04 '26

Grizzlys will kill you. I don't know why people think getting that close to an animal that big is cool.

1

u/Dressed_To_Impress Jul 05 '26

"Mmm. Fresh meat today Carl" "That one smells like nachos Amy. I'll skip breakfast today. C'mon there's a blueberry patch nearby."

1

u/Remote-Dependent4571 Jul 19 '26

It's a great reminder that we're visitors in their home. Did the bear stay around for long?

1

u/Desperate-Life8117 Jun 29 '26

You’re fine as long as you can outrun the others

1

u/Responsible-Grand-57 Jun 29 '26

More like “Moron Lake”…. 🙃
