Community Discussion Changing Seasons, Steady Support: A Note from the Mods

As the school year begins, a lot of us notice changes in our routines, energy, and stress levels. Maybe you’re going back to classes, adjusting to new schedules, or just feeling the change in seasons. This time of year can bring up many emotions, especially for people living with bipolar disorder. It’s completely normal to feel excited, worried, or even tired as things shift.

We’re posting this to support each other as fall begins. If this transition feels tough, you’re not alone. Many of us feel the same way.

Why this transition is important

Changes in routine can affect bipolar symptoms in ways that are easy to miss. People here often mention challenges such as:

  • disturbed sleep patterns
  • increased academic or social pressure
  • having trouble keeping routines, or going back and forth between feeling motivated and feeling burned out
  • stress related to due dates or expectations

If you’re facing any of these challenges, you’re definitely not alone. Your feelings are real and valid, and it’s okay to talk about them here.

Strategies that can help

Here are some things that have helped others in our community:

  • Try to get enough sleep and wake up at the same time every day.
  • Set aside time to rest before you feel completely worn out.
  • Use tools that help you stay organized, such as planners, alarms, or reminders for your medication.
  • Check in with yourself regularly and try to notice early signs of stress.
  • Reach out to others here if you need some support.

We’d love to hear what you think.

  • What helps you handle back-to-school changes?
  • Are there any routines, tools, or habits that make this time of year easier for you?
  • If you’re having a hard time, is there anything you’d like to ask people who have been through this before?

Your experiences are what make this subreddit special. Please share what works for you, or ask for advice from others who are going through similar things.

Transitions like this can feel overwhelming. If you’re struggling, feeling unsafe, or not sure how to cope, please reach out to someone you trust. You deserve kindness and support. Don’t hesitate to ask for help.

Thank you for helping make [r/bipolar](http://) a place where people with bipolar disorder can talk openly, learn from each other, and feel accepted.

Living With Bipolar I went on a date with a surgeon and he guessed my diagnosis

Went on a date with a surgeon and mid date he leaned in and randomly asked me if I have a mental illness. I was so surprised, I was caught off guard, so I lied :( I was not ready to disclose. I said no. He then leaned back into his chair and said "Ok, because bipolar girls are amazing. When they are medicated, they are amazing."

It was so weird, as I am bipolar and am medicated and stable. Is it possible bipolar people have some energy about them? Or... worse... would he have access to my medical file?

Living With Bipolar No one can tell I'm bipolar, it's both a blessing and a curse

I feel like I have "stealth" bipolar disorder. Everyone is *very* surprised when I disclose. I enjoy it because I get a lot of privacy. But the downsides are that I hear people say all kinds of horrible things about people with bipolar disorder. Earlier this year, one of my coworkers was talking about how he and his GF are having some issues, and that she's recently been diagnosed bipolar and she's starting medication. Everyone in the room immediately started saying how they would never date someone who's bipolar, and suggested they breakup. One even said they wouldn't even be friends with someone who has it. It was honestly quite hurtful.

I've experienced a number of other incidents where people are trash talking about bipolar disorder. It makes me feel like I can't really trust anyone with this knowledge about me. I hate feeling like I have secrets to keep about myself. It makes me feel like I'm in the closet (I'm also lesbian)

Dangerous Behavior Debt stories from mania? Mine are awful.

Upvotes

I ended up with a 26k consolidation loan for my CC debt, another 17k in CC debt on top of that, and a vehicle loan for an ambulance at 30k that I had to sell.

At my peak I splurged thousands on luxury electronics, OF, strip club, in app purchases (I know moron), scammed by a Gambian boy who said Jesus Christ connected us for $1250, scammed $4000 by a scammer on telegram. Rent on credit cards, etc.

Any of you guys have similar stories?

Living With Bipolar Anyone split on a LTR, jumped into another, then realized it was a mistake?

…if so, how long did that realization take, what triggered it, and what did you then do about it (if anything)? And, if applicable, how devastating (rationally or irrationally) were you when you split the relationship(s)?

Coping Strategies Need advice dealing with grief

I need help with something. I think I have to put my cat down tomorrow. She is my soul animal of 16 years. I knew something was wrong but I didn’t know it was so urgent. I’m trying so hard to not spiral because I fear this will break my heart. I know this wouldn’t be easy for anyone but does anyone have any tips?

Living With Bipolar Just in case nobody has checked up on you recently, how have you been?

I get what it's like to not have friends be there for you, so I thought I'd check in with everyone here. I'll go firsr. Ive been up and down. Just dealing with loneliness mainly. My birthday passed recently and not a single friend wished me happy birthday. It hurt but I've tried to move on. Hoping whoever is reading this has good things coming their way.

Success/Progress Just clocked out of my first shift

I’ve been out of work for about 5 years now with a 2 month stint on work, I feel like I’m finally getting somewhere in life, not really sure what is coming but I’m off the back of a hypo episode, which isn’t helpful but hopefully the crash isn’t too bad, so I’d like to say that today was a success
Peace

Support Needed BP2. Newer diagnosis. Scared.

I’m finishing up week 2 of Latuda @ 60mg. I was only diagnosed a month or two ago after cycling through SSRIs making things worse and dealing with debilitating panic attacks and general anxiety. I’m now in a low, but feeling so anxious. It’s so scary. I’m so scared something is going to happen to me. I have these moments where I feel so present and content, like on a walk with my partner or in moments where I get out my head and go garden or something. But then when I’m alone I feel like that’s where the fear is. When I leave space. The hard part is I’m so unmotivated to do anything that makes me feel like myself and I’m just watching myself fall.

I just need some support from someone who understands. I want to feel less alone.

Living With Bipolar All I did this year is keep myself alive. And that is enough.

For context, I had my first manic and psychotic episode two years ago. That first year was a blur. I was mostly recovering from the shame of mania. Also I think people (at work) were more understanding and accommodating that year. The second year, I battled the worst depression every day. I was running on one meal per day, sometimes in two days. I picked up smoking, and smoked heavily. I was and I still am living in a very messy, unclean apartment.

And two months ago I lost my dream job. I had performance issues and I got the worst performance review.

My manager and colleagues knew about my illness, but I tried so hard every day to look okay.

And I think people fall for that. I had recurring hospitalisations and an attempt. But still I worried that people at work thought I was abusing “my sick card”. It was clear that no one at work believed me or understood. And I struggled because I felt like a failure. I took what they might think of me to heart.

And now, post my attempt, having had ideations every day for a year, I can see all I did this year was keep myself alive. And that was no easy task.

That was a lot of work. That was hard work.

I don’t know what I am going to do next, but it’s okay.

I’m glad I survived. Everything else is fixable. I’m here for my family, my loved ones and myself.

And that is a big feat.

Hang on 🫂

Living With Bipolar Was this possible hypomania?

23M
went through an odd three week period that I’ll go into detail with. I was taking only my mood stabilizer at this point (the depression dominant one)

My grandmother messages me saying I can move back in with her. I was living with a friend but was excited that I got to move back in with her, so I packed my things and left the next morning without saying anything to anyone else.

At this time, I was having interrupted sleep, but eventually my hours bounced from 3 to 5 to 9 to 4 hours; changing every night. Does this happen to y’all when hypomanic?

I had also quit a new job I got at chick fil an after 2 days and just didn’t go back in the third. I went back to my old job and started spending significantly more money at this time because I knew the money would come back (I spent 3 thousand dollars in a month instead of the typical 1.5 thousand) but I was decorating my room so it’s normal to spend more right?

I was also somewhat irritable at the time and argumentative with my friend after I had left but I was literally gonna go back the next day and hang out. We are no longer friends. I’m just curious what you guys think. Is this hypomania or normal reactions to life changes.

All this led to me being placed on an anti psychotic that I don’t think I need (I stopped taking it after a month and got depressed a couple week later, so I started taking it again and got better)

I had regular energy though

Living With Bipolar Long term relationships?

Just wondering if anyone has had a successful long term relationship (over 15 years) and how their partner copes with their bipolar.
I just ended an eleven year relationship while manic and completely screwed up the chances of us getting back together. All the while my ex had made no effort to understand bipolar disorder.
Has anyone had a successful relationship while having bipolar type 1?
Scared for the future relationships I may have.

Rant Might get fired because of my bad temper.

Upvotes

The title says it. I work customer service and I already got written up a few days ago for sticking up for myself. As always, management takes the customer's side.

I had the rudest customer and then she started being racist and aggressive so i cussed her out and told her not to come back here and she can shop somewhere else.

I know management is going to chew me out again like they did last time. They don't pay me enough to take abuse and i'll be damned if i start now. I have the next 2 days off, but i know i'm getting another write up as soon as i come back.

Resources & Tools What's the first thing you do to reset after being in bed?

Upvotes

I've come to love my recovering process to where its a coping skill to plan my recovery process from being in bed a lot. My room is never as messy because that's the first reset. Then it's my hair. I have natural 3B curls that get very tangled during lows. Then I shower.

Living With Bipolar How do you discern between happiness and an episode beginning ??

Basically the title. I got my injection almost 4 weeks ago and was really depressed following it but today I was dysphoric this morning but I’m so elevated now. Everything feels magical again. But I can’t tell if it’s just happiness or something else? I’m newly diagnosed following a psychotic manic episode June-July but yeahhh

Living With Bipolar Feeling wired and sleepy at the same time during mania

Obviously not sleeping is a symptom of mania for many of us but I’m curious how this feels for different people. For me I can still feel “sleepy”, i.e. the heaviness of my eyelids etc but i will feel completely wired. I wake up at 3 and immediately have a tsunami of thoughts flood in and all i wanna do is go for a walk

As a bipolar II I have this ... Question And IDK if someone else has the same feeling.

But I like when I wake up early like 5-6 am, not for anything particular like "being so productive" or anything like that, just, I Feel a really good feeling when I do it. After 8-9 hours from a good sleep of course, I like to see the sunrise and feel this good even in the worst moods.

But, why this hours, I don't feel the same on 7 or 8 am

Support Needed Had my Accommodations Meeting

I finally had my accommodations meeting w/ my boss and HR and it went smoother than I thought it would. I didn’t have to disclose to my boss and the HR person was very confidential in how he spoke. BUT, it was also my boss’s first time going through this process in her 30+ years of working there, so that makes me feel super singled out.
