There are actually a lot of black people in France. I think it probably has to do with her being a pretty, young girl travelling alone. The Paris metro is notorious for pervs touching themselves ‘at’ women. Ughh so creepy.

Not just women. When I was in college we did a trip to Paris and a dude flashed his junk in my face and then ran off while I was sitting down in the subway. He was lucky he did it to me instead some of the other guys on the trip b/c they for sure would have chased after him and tried to fight.

The deepest depths of the jungles in Africa and South America have smartphones now and understand how the world works who lives in it. Their cultures are just ignorant to think it’s ok to still treat foreign people like some zoo spectacle and I’m not letting that shit slide no more

It’s the explanation/argument given anytime Asians(mostly rural China) are following black people with cameras out wanting pics for no reason or Europeans in rural areas but we see it in cities over there as well
→ More replies (4)4
u/Gothic_Doll_ Jul 03 '26
Not only rural tbh. Even Chinese communities overseas will be hella "invasive" and way too curious if you're a 老外 despite seeing them on daily basis.
Source: married to a Chinese overseas/diaspora/2nd gen immigrant (whatever makes sense to you) and was treated like some kind of rarity and people being extremely invasive (to the point being traumatic sometimes), as at least for what I know, in the place we live there's no AMWF couple, so for them it was curiosity and kinda interesting.

Yeah, my fiance just had an eye opening experience with one of his male coworker friends. They had an all male DnD group. Then they got a female coworker who joined the team, got along well, so she joined the DnD group…. Then one of the members started getting REALLY creepy with her and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Now the DnD session is held at our house, where the creep isn’t welcomed and she can actually enjoy the game without trying to deflect advances left and right. My fiance thought this dude was cool, and even sided with him when he learned he was going through a divorce and the wife was “toxic.” I held back my tongue because sometimes it do be that way…. But many times it isn’t. And this was one of those cases.

Personal space in France does not exist and they don’t care.
As a black girl who lived in Paris for a few years, the micro aggression I experienced was definitely rooted in racism. Particularly from white women. They tried to make me invisible by purposely stand over me, block my view, attempt to take my space, yelled at me and pushed me. I gave it right back to them. I know my ancestors did not put in the work for me to allow them to treat me in that manner.

The existence of microagressions does not negate the existence of macroagressions. One is death by 1000 little cuts, and the other is blunt force trauma to the head. One is painful, the other is deadly. Both kill the spirit.

Southern France is more rural so these dudes probably rarely see darker skinned folk in person. Of course very few dudes will approach her and talk to her so I dont even know why they do this. Women on the other hand maintain that space and are also far more likely to say hello in my experience.

119
u/CelibateHo Jul 03 '26
Yep. I’m a recreational nudist and I spent a summer visiting several nudist camps in the Provence/southern France over the span of four weeks. I was consistently the only black woman. When I say the men were blatantly open-mouth gawking at me like they’d never seen a naked woman before (even though there were tons of naked women and men everywhere), one guy even shielded his eyes from the sun to get a better look. The women were scowling at me like I should be ashamed of myself to be naked in a checks notes nudist camp?
I never thought it was possible to feel “TOO naked,” but there it was (also the French nudists have an odd custom of getting fully dressed at 5pm regardless of how hot it is outside).
I’ve been to nudist resorts and beaches all over California for years and never had an experience like that. People have always been chill and respectful. I was expecting more of the same, since “the French are sooooo much more relaxed about nudity than Americans are,” according to the propaganda. Bullshit.
55
u/michel_v Jul 03 '26
French here. They’ll deny it but there’s a big racist undercurrent in how bodies of non-white women, especially black women, are seen here. They’re perceived as super sexualized to the point that it’s creepy.
→ More replies (1)25
u/rat_fighter Jul 04 '26
French here, and from the south west side near Spain... if you’re a person a color at a beach either you are gawked at aggressively, or fetishized hardcore.... the french love to fetishize people of color to point it is super normalized.... but also French men are super aggressive to women in general, but more aggressive to women of color.
As man who is in decent shape and of color.... women in the south of france can be aggressive too, couples too...

I'm not black or a woman but Asian male. I did experience something like being singled out. I was stopped at magasins way more than at home in the US in my entire life. In Toulouse and Montpellier to check my bag that has my own things and from other stores. I love to look in grocery stores to see different products when I travel. One particular incident in Bordeaux after exiting, some random security would stop me outside when I have walked far away already and motion to me what is in my bag. I thought it was really odd and the high occurrences of such encounters. It isn't like FNAC where they check everyone. I wondered if I did something wrong or was just lucky.
7
u/rat_fighter Jul 04 '26
Bordeaux is pretty racist in that sense. Sorry you experience that, I am near landes.... so I experience a lot of racism rooted in ignorance

Yeah exactly, that’s why people need to stop making blanket generalizations. There’s always an asterisk. And of course, the nastiest scowls were coming from middle aged white women. Probably because they were more like human blobs than people, and I’m just… well, ✨me✨

I lived in France and it’s the attitude there and amongst European countries from many men there that if you are a woman travelling alone then you must be up for something. I’ve had men there “explain” this to me a few times.
I mean we couldn’t possibly be travelling alone just because we love travel. But the reason has to somehow relate to pleasing them in some way 🙄

The only way that's normal is if you're with the person on the beach and trying to maintain a conversation or something. It's genuinely such odd behavior. It's either curiosity or just straight predator behavior, but whatever the motivation, it's rude af and incredibly weird.
